Whenever we have featured founders who have scaled their businesses meaningfully, it is typically because they have been good at acquiring customers and increasing their lifetime value. But Mayur Abhaya, our guest in this episode, has scaled LifeCell to an annual revenue of about 800 crores on the back of its strong supply chain & delivery capabilities. Mayur's father was a serial entrepreneur in the pharma and healthcare space and built Shasun Pharma into a 500-million-dollar global pharma manufacturing player. He also set up Lifecell as he saw the gap in the market for stem cell banking. Mayur joined the business when the topline was just 20 crores and over the last 16 years has expanded the business both geographically and in terms of product lines. Today just one fourth of their turnover comes from the original business line of stem cell banking, and some of their business lines are around delivering cutting edge healthcare products to the Indian consumer at amazingly affordable prices. If you care about health-tech then there is no better episode than this for a deeper understanding of the space. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week, I wanted to bring back a conversation I shared a while back with the first What's Next guest to be quoted in my book, Growth IQ. Mayur Gupta is the Chief Marketing Officer at Freshly, leading a team of marketers to make Freshly an iconic brand and drive breakthrough growth. Before Freshly, Mayur was the Global VP for Growth & Marketing at Spotify, the Chief Marketing Officer at Healthgrades, and the first-ever Global Chief Marketing Technologist at Kimberly Clark, one of the largest global consumer packaged goods companies. In 2014, Mayur was recognized as one of the “40 under 40” leading marketers in the industry by Brand Innovators, was profiled by the Harvard Business Review and the Economist as the model Chief Marketing Technologist, and also received the CMO Programmatic Award by the CMO Club. He sits on the Board of Directors of Adtalem (NYSE:ATGE) and D'Addario (private), guiding the C-Suite in their digital transformation. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… marketers looking for a master class of modern marketing and how to create an experience that will influence, inspire, and change a human life from one of the quintessential marketers of our time. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Mayur brings his engineering mind to the world of marketing. His message? Your internal culture–your company culture–is key and central to the culture you are trying to build around your product. It's important and indispensable to use everything at your disposal: math, science, and research. But ultimately, it's all about being customer-focused, authentic, and transparent. At the core of any well-rounded, successful, and long-lasting organization is a human-centric strategy that is sincere and authentic. Your goals as an organization should always be customer-focused, and that starts within your organization with your very first customer, your employee. You cannot be customer-focused if you do not first care for and about the people you work with, because they are the brand. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Mayur's transparency on the fact that this is all a journey and things in our industry continue to change based on what the customer wants from us. Mayur Gupta grew up in India, got his degree in computer science, and started his career as an engineer in 2000 at HCL Technologies. Since then, Mayur has had quite a diverse and impressive career path. He has held key marketing leadership roles at SapientNitro, Kimberly Clark, Healthgrades, Spotify, Freshly, and most recently, Gannett, part of the USA Today Network. Throughout the years, Mayur has also developed a role as an investor and board director for various organizations. Today, his role as a marketer and his role as an investor play into each other and make him better at both. Mayur started getting into crypto in 2016, and in 2022, he was brought on as the Chief Marketing Officer at Kraken. In this episode, Alan and Mayur discuss his career path, his investor activity, his board directorship, and the throughlines he has seen having worked across different verticals and scales. They also talk about what marketing crypto looks like, what he is trying to achieve, and how he measures effectiveness. Alan asks how the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried and the downfall of FTX have impacted the crypto market and the role Mayur's marketing team plays in educating the next wave of adopters with a focus on substance and real-world use cases. Kraken is a crypto exchange that has been in business for over 12 years, making it one of the longest-standing and largest exchanges in the world. In the first few years, they focused on their first consumer segment, professional traders. About 4 years ago, they diversified into their second and third consumer segments: retail consumers and institutional clients. Recently, their focus has been on continually diversifying with new ventures like NFTs while staying focused on the broader mission: driving and accelerating the adoption of crypto to bring financial inclusion and freedom to the world. The first 10 years of Kraken's growth were based on word of mouth, signaling a great market fit. Mayur tells us Kraken's next phase is going to be driven by branding and performance, with 2024 being all about scale and getting on the Formula 1 race track. In this episode, you'll learn:Why and how is Kraken shifting its marketing strategy and segment focus? The role of marketing for crypto in the wake of FTX and SBFThe importance of increasing your velocity of decision-makingUnderstanding that brand is performance and performance is brand Key Highlights: [02:10] Marketing through the lens of an investor and board director[05:00] Mayur's path to Kraken[09:25] What is Kraken, and who do they serve?[11:25] Growth Marketing for Kraken[12:50] Marketing across different verticals and scales[15:35] Livestages and business models impacting marketing[19:25] Where is Kraken with their marketing strategy today?[21:45] Marketing to the entire world[23:55] Measurement, attributions, and making the case for marketing[28:15] Making decisions with 70% information and 30% belief[29:10] The FTX and SBF impact on the category[33:50] Buddhism is the backbone of Mayur's life.[36:40] Advice to his younger self[38:40] The need to prove marketing's relevance[40:10] AI, measurement, and the crossover between marketing and brand[41:55] The biggest challenges facing marketers today Looking for more?Visit our website for links to the resources mentioned in this episode and ways to connect with the guest! Today Fabio talks to Deepa Das Acevedo (Emory University Law School), Mohsin A. Bhat (Queen Mary University of London School of Law), and Mayur Suresh (SOAS School of Law). The conversation hinges mostly around the piece the guests wrote to the PAL project, titled “Authoritarianism in Indian State, Law, and Society" and published in 2022 in the World Comparative Law journal. In that piece, the guests argue that political change in India under Modi and the BJP does involve a degree of “autocratic legalism”, according to the conception that we began working with on this podcast and in the PAL project. To concentrate power and govern without constraints, Modi and the BJP do make use of incremental and malicious changes in constitutional and statutory law. But that alone is insufficient to fully characterize the Modi moment and its relationship with law. This moment, they argue, is further based on an ideology (Hindu nationalism) that combines ethnic and religious components and is backed up by mass mobilization. In the interview, the guests unpack this argument and debate how it adds to the framework of studies on autocratic legalism, which up to this point, both the host and the guests agree, had been too focused on the state and power concentration in the hands of a single individual (the autocrat), overlooking the connections between the state and society and the broader social or economic hierarchies that current authoritarian leaders have also helped entrench. Fabio and his guests also discuss the methodological premises of their work (the orientation they share toward “law as it is lived on the ground”), which has enabled them to spot these specific dimensions of the phenomenon we have been trying to better understand in our project. And they finish with discussions about the prospects for resistance to Modi and the BJP and attempted predictions about how the story of Indian democracy may unfold. In this episode, Bits and Pieces takes guard afresh after completing a fine 100. We ponder the metaphorical implications of Mushfiqur's soft-handling the ball, Buttler's disastrous run as ODI captain, and Pakistan's comical preparation for their next hammering in Australia. Also, lots of banter on the WPL Auction, and a cool rundown from Rachana Ramchand, and a review of the Englnd v India T20s. This episode also unveils the real reason why CSK doesn't pull off a Mumbai-Hardik and buy every single IPL superstar, and identifies the one remaining likeable person from India's 2011 World Cup squad. Mayur Vihar Delhi, September 28, 2023: Discourse by Satguru Mata Sudiksha Ji Maharaj
In Terror Trials: Life and Law in Delhi's Courts (Fordham UP, 2022), Mayur Suresh shows how legal procedures and technicalities become the modes through which courtrooms are made habitable. Where India's terror trials have come to be understood by way of the expansion of the security state and displays of Hindu nationalism, Suresh elaborates how they are experienced by defendants in a quite different way, through a minute engagement with legal technicalities. Amidst the grinding terror trials—which are replete with stories of torture, illegal detention and fabricated charges—defendants school themselves in legal procedures, became adept petition writers, build friendships with police officials, cultivate cautious faith in the courts and express a deep sense of betrayal when this trust is belied. Though seemingly mundane, legal technicalities are fraught and highly contested, and acquire urgent ethical qualities in the life of a trial: the file becomes a space in which the world can be made or unmade, the petition a way of imagining a future, and investigative and courtroom procedures enable the unexpected formation of close relationships between police and terror-accused. In attending to the ways in which legal technicalities are made to work in everyday interactions among lawyers, judges, accused terrorists, and police, Suresh shows how human expressiveness, creativity and vulnerability emerge through the law. Shatakshi Singh is a PhD student in Political Science at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on legal mobilization and claim-making within the context of dispossession and evictions of urban slums in India. Twitter. Email: ssing176@ucsc.edu. We Finance Progress... when you visit www.m-kopa.com you're met with this brief but powerful message that, I think, captures the dual business and social impacts of their connected financing platform. In today's episode, I speak to Mayur Patel, Chief Commercial Officer at M-KOPA, about financing life-changing assets collateralized by the service those assets provide. And we talk about a lot more. M-KOPA was founded in 2010 to combine the power of digital micropayments with GSM connectivity to make life-enhancing assets more accessible and has since deployed $1 billion in products and credit to the financially excluded."For the majority of our customers - over three-quarters of our customers today - this is the first time they are owning a 4G handset. Those individuals are living under 4G wireless spectrum that's above their heads, but it's really been the affordability of the handset, which is the gateway into that. We've been able to build a strong credit profile for them. That's unique. We're building a consumer FinTech business here, where the first step with our customers is to help them get access to a productive asset, and then use that as a way to bring them into a much broader financial relationship."M-Kopa is at https://m-kopa.com/ (and on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/m-kopa/)Mayur Patel is on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/mayur-h-patel/You can learn more about myself, Brendan le Grange, on my LinkedIn page (feel free to connect), my action-adventure novels are on Amazon, some versions even for free, and my work with ConfirmU and our gamified psychometric scores is at https://confirmu.com/ and on episode 24 of this very show https://www.howtolendmoneytostrangers.show/episodes/episode-24If you have any feedback, questions, or if you would like to participate in the show, please feel free to reach out to me via the contact page on this site.Regards, Brendan Hosted on Acast.
