In 2016, CarStories sat down with legendary American motorsports photographer Jesse Alexander. He went from shooting La Carrera Panamericana to Monaco's glamorous Formula One race. And in that time, his stature in the racing world grew immensely too. Jesse Alexander passed away at the age of 92 on December 14, 2021 at home in Santa Barbara with his beloved wife Nancy by his side.
In today's Slow Baja Podcast, we talk to Bruce Trenery about his experience racing the wild and wooly early days of the La Carrera Panamericana Classic. Bruce ran in the LCP Classics from 1987 to 1993. In its early “Baja” period, the race was a high-speed sprint from Ensenada to San Felipe. A few years later, the La Carrera moved to mainland Mexico and, at 2000 miles, officially became the world's fastest, longest, (and most dangerous) vintage car race. Bruce raced it for three more years before moving on to less perilous racing pursuits. In 1987, I was a college kid on Spring Break in San Felipe and heard the snarl of a Ferrari V-12. I followed my ears to the finish line and marveled at the assembled cars. Rumors of mayhem and death swirled around the event. For decades I've wanted to talk to somebody who ran that crazy race and hear their account of it. Bruce Trenery owns Fantasy Junction, a classic car dealership in Emeryville, California. Over the last 30 years, he has built a reputation for quality and integrity worldwide. With his son Spencer, he has raced the NORRA Mexican 1000, among many other events. Spencer, a highly accomplished racer in his own right, now runs the day-to-day operations of Fantasy Junction, allowing his dad the occasional afternoon off to record a Slow Baja Podcast. Chris Mason is the Co-Founder, along with his brother Jeffrey of Driving La Carrera, a motorsports media production company and vintage rally racing team. These two American brothers go racing in and documenting the world's last great road race, Mexico's La Carrera Panamericana.
In the episode we talk to the Driving La Carrera rally team which is made up of two American brothers, Chris and Jeff Mason (The Rally Brothers). The Mason brothers grew up in Morristown, New Jersey, a quiet, leafy suburb 30 miles west of New York City but they both had a love of adventure, a competitive spirit, and a passion for life that in later years has taken them around the globe together. In this incarnation a passing mention of a rally in Mexico has led the brothers to delve down a rabbit hole of vintage racing in which they now race a 1965 Volvo Amazon 122S (Vintage Racing Services) called The Mzcalero in the La Carrera Panamericana. The original La Carrera Panamericana, now remembered as one of the most memorable motorsport events of the time ran from 1950–54 and promoted Mexico's newly completed Panamerican highway. Over five races, 27 people lost their lives, including racers, officials, and fans. After the tragic crash that killed 80 spectators at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 1955, La Carrera Panamericana was canceled, seemingly for good until a new version of La Carrera returned in 1988.After one year of competition the brothers thought it would be great to capture the event, and in partnering with locals the documentary Rally Brothers was completed and then became the foundation for a business to chronicle the stories of other La Carrera race teams. The following year in 2020 the crew followed two teams, including that of Karlo Flores in his GT40 (GT40 Panamericano) and navigator Fuentes and driver Gabriel Pérez Torres in their Studebaker (Carrera Passion).

Karlo Flores and his navigator Juan Carlos Salgado won the 2020 Sport Mayor class of La Carrera Panamericana. Long celebrated as one of the most intense, grueling challenges in motorsports, La Carrera is an epic undertaking for teams given the seven days and 2,000 mile endurance run through the winding tight roads of Southern Mexico.

Hey amigos, it's hard to believe that is's been a year since Slow Baja got picked up on Apple iTunes, Spotify, and Google Podcast. I wanted to take a moment to say a hearty THANKS for listening. Since I launched the show, many have asked me about my Baja journey and what Slow Baja is all about. So since you asked, here it is, one year in, I swap seats with my intrepid editor, Christopher Keiser, and tell you all about me. My first Baja trip came in 1984, just before my Freshman year at San Diego State University. An older cousin who attended SDSU invited me to have lobster down in Puerto Nuevo. On the drive home, we got pulled over, he bribed the cop, and we continued on our way home. -Welcome to Mexico! Regular Tijuana and Rosarito Beach (drinking) excursions followed, and camping on the beach in San Felipe was our Spring Break destination for years. At the end of one of those Spring Break trips, Ted Donovan, my roommate, and I decided to continue South. We piled into my old Toyota Corona and headed out -destination unknown. We slept under the stars, ate on the cheap, and had to scrounge beer bottles for the deposit money to buy gas for our return. It was quite an adventure and I couldn't wait to have another. Fast forward to 2001, I'm married and have two-year-old twins and a four-year-old. My wife and I are exhausted and needed a break. We quit our jobs, rented out our apartment, and took the family down to La Paz for an extended vacation. La Paz was way too hot for us, so we moved over to Todos Santos. We had a bliss-filled month puttering around Todos Santos before putting our minivan on the ferry to the mainland. We drove the Devil's Backbone to Durango and onto Zacatecas. The Colonial city of Zacatecas is an UNESCO World-Heritage site and is well worth a visit. As the only gringos in town, we were warmly welcomed, and our light-haired children were known to all. We spent seven months there before reluctantly returning home. Mexico and the slow life bit me. I immediately began scheming about how to get back. My Mexico adventuring started in earnest in 2006 when Ted and I took on the grueling La Carrera Panamericana. The 2000-mile La Carrera, also known as the Mexican Road Race, is widely considered the fastest, most dangerous vintage race in the world. We had the least amount of experience, the least amount of horsepower, and we finished dead last. On one challenging day, I said to Ted -if we ever figure out the La Carrera, we will take on the Baja 1000 in a Class 11 VW Beetle. We haven't acquired a Beetle yet, but in 2012 I found Slow Baja, my 1971 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. Later that year, for Ted's 50th birthday, we drove Slow Baja down for a three-week adventure. We traversed the entire peninsula on dirt. It was my first off-roading experience, the FJ40 performed flawlessly, and I was smitten. After driving the 3000-mile BajaXL Rally in 2019, I started thinking about starting a Baja-centered podcast. After guest-hosting Jim Reilly's show, I launched Slow Baja. Covid made my goal of recording every interview in person a little more complicated, but I am deeply thankful for all of my guests who opened their homes and their hearts for me. Here's to another year of sharing conversations and exploring Baja together! Please follow Slow Baja on Twitter Please follow Slow Baja on Instagram Please join the Slow Baja Community on Facebook

This episode features one of the most dynamic women in motorsport, Mexico’s own Angelica Fuentes. We step into the way back machine and talk about Angelica’s wins at the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb and La Carrera Panamericana in 2008 and 2006. She gives a give us the low down on racing Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique and vintage sports car driving tests at Brooklands Museum. Our first repeat guest, Angelica is a great sports person and a true racer.
Chris and Jeff share the adventures of the 2019 La Carrera Panamericana road rally where they placed third, despite a serious crash in qualifying that almost ended their race.
Christina Brinkerhoff is producing a documentary about her mother, past Cars Yeah guest Renee Brinkerhoff – as she conquers 7 continents driving in a 1956 Porsche 356. They are fresh off the 36-day Peking to Paris endurance rally that took place this past summer. The next challenge will be in Kenya in the East African Safari Classic Rally, a 9-day, 5,000 km run through Kenya and Tanzania. Prior to Africa Renee ran the La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, The Targa Tasmania in Australia, and The Caminos del Inca in South America. They will challenge the Antarctica Ice Challenge in 2121. Christina is a graduate of the USC Film School and a former talent agent. Through their Valkyrie Gives Foundation, she and her mom raise awareness of and funding for efforts against the global problem of child trafficking.
We did it. My brother Chris and I successfully raced La Carrera Panamericana. We finished 5th in the Historic A+ class and 49th overall. Not a bad result for our first time out. It was an incredible two-week adventure in Mexico. After I’d been home a couple days I had a chance to call Chris and talk about the race, our experiences, and of course ask the big question, “are we going to race it again?”
The latest RCR Stories is our longest yet: an in-depth look at the glorious life and tragic death of racing legend Mickey Thompson, from his efforts to break the world landspeed record, to horrific occurrences at La Carrera Panamericana and the Indy 500. And, naturally, we'll go into his murder alongside his wife, Trudy Thompson, and some of the events that may have led up to the crime that rocked the automotive world. Is the case closed? Or has there been a grievious miscarriage of justice? Join us for RCR Stories: Mickey Thompson.
Our guest on this episode of the podcast is rally racer extraordinaire Angelica Fuentes Garcia. Now a professional co-driver and navigator, Angelica has competed in La Carrera Panamericana 22 times. She took the overall win in 2006 with her teammate Gabriel Perez and has scored numerous stage wins and podiums along the way. People talk about the spirit of La Carrera—its passion, its community, its pride— and I can’t think of anyone who embodies that better than Angelica. At the same time she is a fierce competitor who is meticulous with her preparation and confident in her skills.
Our guest on this episode of the podcast is the famed Scottish racer Murray Smith, who’s career in auto sports spans 50 years. As a driver Murray has raced and rallied in both modern and historic cars all around the world. Including 10 runs in La Carrera Panamericana. Murray’s practical and no nonsense advice on what it takes to be a successful rally team is a reminder to me that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Like all great racing drivers, Murray pulls no punches and tells it like it is.
This month’s guest is auto technician extraordinaire Tim Ritchie. Tim heads up Vintage Racing Services in Stratford, CT. VRS is the racing side of Automotive Restorations Inc., one of America’s premier restorers of vintage and historic cars. Tim has been building and preparing race and rally cars for nearly 30 years. He’s been involved with La Carrera Panamericana since VRS sent its first car to Mexico in 1992. To say Tim’s knowledge of the Carrera runs deep is as great an understatement as saying an F1 car is merely quick. His knowledge of the rally, how to prepare the car, how to preserve the car over 7 days of racing, and what it takes to win it goes deeper than deep. What driver wouldn’t want such a mench on his Carrera crew? I know I do.
In vintage racing you’ll find many unique characters, people with a passion for vintage cars and for the joys and challenges of racing. This episode’s guest Kent Bain is one of those people. In 1978 Kent started Automotive Restorations in Stamford, Connecticut, one of America’s premier restoration shops for vintage cars. Born from that was Vintage Racing Services which prepares and supports all types of vintage car racing, including rallies such as La Carrera Panamericana. I sat down with Kent, who’s been both a La Carrera driver and mechanic, to talk about the spirit and history of the race, Carrera cars, and what makes good rally driver. I hope you enjoy.
Welcome to Driving La Carrera. I’m Jeff Mason. Along with my brother Chris and our 1965 Volvo Amazon, this show catalogs our journey to race the great Mexican road rally, La Carrera Panamericana. Each month we interview experts about different aspects of the race and the unique experience that is La Carrera. We talk about cars, drivers, racing, and our preparations for a run in 2018. Part personal journal and part how-to guide, we’ve made this show for everyone who dreams of racing. This month I thought we’d go back and talk about the very beginning of this project with my brother Chris. Chris and I sat down and talked about how we got started, how we’ve been preparing for the Carrera and our hopes for the race. I hope you enjoy.
John Benton is the owner of Benton Performance in Anaheim, California. He is a famed Porsche 911, 912 and 356 builder and restorer who prepares these iconic old Porsches for the road, the concours lawn, and for racing. His builds compete in events including historic racing and the immensely difficult La Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico, and the Peking to Paris event in Europe. John’s been wrenching on Porsche for over 33 years with the goal to create original stock cars to modified and racing applications unlocking the Porsche’s true potential. What’s John’s mantra? Saving The World One Porsche At A Time.
Renee Brinkerhoff is the Founder and Driver of Valkyrie Racing where she currently races a 1956 Porsche 356 A coupe in road and rally racing events. In 2013, at the age of 57, in her first race car of any kind, Renee became the first woman in the 30-year history to win her class in the La Carrera Panamericana, an event known as the world’s most dangerous road race. Raised in the U.S. and Southeast Asia her enthusiasm for life was no doubt shaped by her surroundings. For 30 years a voice in her head told her she would some day race a car. In her three years of running the La Carrera Panamericana, Renee continues to be the only woman driver amidst 80 plus men.
In two brief years, automotive photographer Jesse Alexander went from shooting La Carrera Panamericana to Monaco’s glamorous Formula One race. And in that time, his stature in the racing world grew immensely too.
