American actor, playwright, director, and film and television producer
POPULARITY
TVC 678.3: Actor and author Laurence Luckinbill talks to Ed about working with William Shatner, both as an actor and as a director, in Star Trek V, as well as the approach he took toward playing Sybok, Spock's half-brother, in that film. Larry's autobiography, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life, is available wherever books are sold through Sunbury Press.
TVC 678.2: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with Laurence Luckinbill (The Boys in the Band, The Delphi Bureau, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Lyndon, Hemingway, Teddy Tonight!, Clarence Darrow Tonight!). Topics this segment include how Larry's guest appearance on Harry O in the summer of 1974 resulted in Larry adopting an Alaskan Malumute, whom Larry named Mush (and who remained a beloved part of the Luckinbill family for the next thirteen years), and how William Shatner cast Larry as Sybok in Star Trek V after seeing his one-man show Lyndon on PBS. Larry's autobiography, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life, is available wherever books are sold through Sunbury Press.
TVC 677.5: Ed welcomes actor, author, playwright, and Emmy Award-winning producer Laurence Luckinbill (The Boys in the Band, The Delphi Bureau, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Lyndon, Hemingway, Teddy Tonight!, Clarence Darrow Tonight!). Larry's autobiography, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life, is a page-turning, brutally honest story of how Larry overcame a meager upbringing up in the Ozark Mountains to forge his way into a successful career as a working actor and playwright. While it includes a lot of great showbiz stories from Larry's career on stage, film, and television, Affective Memories is really a book that transcends genres, evoking many classic American themes (one of which is finding redemption and a second lease on life through the love of a good woman), while also providing insight into what it means to be an actor, the healing power of the performing arts, and the lifetime discovery of what it means to be human. Among other topics this segment, Larry shares the story of how he came to write Teddy Tonight, his one-man show about the life of President Theodore Roosevelt, to illustrate how to find the “motor” that drives the particular story one wants to tell, be that as a play, a memoir, or a long-form work of fiction.
TVC 677.6: Actor and author Laurence Luckinbill (The Boys in the Band, The Delphi Bureau, Star Trek V, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life) shares a few memories of his years in Oakland, California, where he moved to be with his family in the 1950s; the many mentors in his life, including the Catholic nun who taught him to appreciate the power of words; and how he first came to learn the difference between a “movie horse” and a “horse” horse while filming an episode of Bonanza. Affective Memories is available wherever books are sold through Sunbury Press.

Wiz DOES NOT RECOMMEND Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Before I get to the review, I just want to say that it's interesting how Star Trek ping-pongs between different styles of stories and it still somehow feels right with the series itself. In the past four, we've had artsy and contemplative (The Motion Picture), tense revenge film (Wrath of Khan), a more standard action drama (Search For Spock) and a parody of sorts (The Voyage Home) and somehow they seem to fit well with the overall feel of the series. With The Final Frontier, Shatner's crack at directing, it's more of a cheesy 80s action comedy. There seems to be more banter and quips between all of the Enterprise crew which in turn leads to some fun character moments. But this comes at a cost: special effects are, yet again, worse then they were in previous films. Whether it's a sign of how the effects were back then or not, they lack an impact and visual fidelity that both the first and second have, but three and four sidestepped the issue by not having so much of those elements in their films. Not so with The Final Frontier: Stunts and special effects seem goofy and unnatural, especially when spliced with obvious green screen effects. The action, otherwise, is passable: there are some decent shootouts and some okay fight scenes that could have been better. But the film does an about-face when it comes to tone by the third act. This is due to the villain of the film Sybok, played by Laurence Luckinbill. Through most of the film, Sybok is portrayed as a cult leader of sorts that brainwashes people to joining his cause. But as the film moves forward, his "power" gets incredibly muddled in it's explanation. It's not clear whether it's a power he possesses or that he is just a good emotional manipulator, but somehow Bones, Kirk and Spock aren't affected because...reasons. And then there is the end of the film. Let's just say that when the main villain is "God" (or someone like him), the discovery and what happens next needs to work in a profound or interesting way...and it does neither. In honesty, The Final Frontier has a problem with both tone and consistency. This isn't something to fault William Shatner on in the director's chair. No, this started in the script phase and either they should have made it a more spiritually focused journey or Lethal Weapon in space. The half-and-half approach didn't work. Despite the film still being entertaining in spots, it's something I wouldn't recommend.
Laurence Luckinbill's career on stage and screen was filled with high-risk choices that often led to great reward. One of those decisions just happens to be Star Trek related.Trek fans know Mr. Luckinbill as Sybok from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," where he donned the pointy ears to play Spock's brother. We learn about how he got the role, his thoughts on who the character is and why he is a more complicated villain than you might believe, working with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, and why the much-maligned fifth movie is better than you remember. We also learn about growing up in Arkansas and how he found the theater, lessons from George Kernodle and Uta Hagen, insight into his "Great Americans" one-man play series, and a deep dive into his multi-year role in the milestone play and film, "The Boys in The Band," a breakout show for LGBTQ culture during a pivotal time in gay rights, of which he is the last surviving cast member. This might be one of the most in-depth interviews with this legendary performer on YouTube, so get ready for a deep dive into this actor who has long earned his time in the spotlight. Hi everyone! In celebration of our 100th regular episode, we have turned our random number generator to the pantheon of Star Trek movies to discuss William Shatner's infamous directorial opus. Will we have a The Motion Picture-style realization that this is good, actually, or is the movie as bad as we remember? One thing's for sure: We both have nothing but good things to say about Laurence Luckinbill.

“Jim, you don't ask the Almighty for his I.D.” It's something you didn't dream was possible, the unlikeliest scenario in all the universe: four people sitting down together in praise of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Hosts John Cribbs and Christopher Funderburg are joined by a pair of friends the show (perhaps the best friends of the show), John Arminio and Bill Teck, in defense of one of the least-defended films in all of le cinema. The group discusses the pros (and undeniable cons) of the film: from the brilliant casting of virtual unknown Laurence Luckinbill as the Vulcan prophet Sybok to what makes a Star Trek film Star Trek-y to how the success and genial humor of Star Trek IV got the series pointed in the wrong direction. Each of the group has a different perspective and relationship to the series, so the discussion approaches from a variety of directions the seemingly unapproachable task of recusing the film's reputation. This week It Was a Thing on TV presents what may be one of their best efforts yet as they look into the history of CBS' Bicentennial Minute segments produced between 1974-1976. In this episode Mark talks about the fifth installment in the "Star Trek" film series: "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" directed by William Shatner. The story of the film concerns the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A being drawn into a hostage crisis on the planet of Nimbus III engineered by a renegade Vulcan by the name of Sybok (played by Laurence Luckinbill) in order to take possession of a starship capable of penetrating "The Great Barrier" where it is expected the mysthical planet of "Sha Ka Ree" lies - the purported place of creation - and where they will find the God at the center of many of the religions of the galaxy who awaits them there. However, Sybok is revealed to be none other than Spock's half-brother - and it is Sybok's psychic manipulation of the crew of the Enterprise into doing his will, as well as his personal relationship with Spock, that tests the friendship of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) in ways they have never known before. The soundtrack of the film was composed by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
Laurence Luckinbill is an actor, playwright and director best know for his one-man plays in which he portrayed President Theodore Roosevelt, Clarence Darrow, Ernest Hemingway and President Lyndon Johnson. Laurence is best known by science fiction fans as Spock's half-brother Sybok in the motion picture Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Laurence's first graphic novel Teddy is based on his one-man play Teddy Tonight! The graphic novel adaptation was illustrated by artist Eryck Tait and published by Dead Reckoning. We learn the story of Theodore Roosevelt's life and why Laurence decided to set his play Teddy Tonight! during a speech T.R. had to deliver in July 1918. What event did he just learn about the changed the course of his speech? I ask Laurence how he kept his live performances night after night fresh and if he ever needed to adjust a portrayal based on audience feedback. Of course we talk about Star Trek V, why Laurence was offered the part, and what he told the director William Shatner about how he wanted to play the part of Sybok. When I Kick Back With The Creator, we discuss how Laurence keeps fit and healthy at 86 years of age and how to have a happy marriage!
