In March 2000, 23-year-old Leah Roberts packed her white Jeep Cherokee, withdrew thousands of dollars, and left North Carolina on a cross-country road trip inspired by Jack Kerouac. Five days after she was last seen in Bellingham, Washington, a couple jogging along a remote logging road near Mount Baker found her Jeep wrecked at the bottom of an embankment. Leah wasn't inside. There was no blood and no sign of injury. Her belongings were still in the car, including $2,500 in cash and a family heirloom. Blankets had been stuffed into the broken windows, as if someone had used the Jeep for shelter after the crash. Years later, a forensic examination revealed the starter motor had been tampered with, raising the possibility the crash was staged. Witnesses recalled seeing Leah at a Bellingham restaurant shortly before she vanished, possibly speaking with a man whose identity has never been confirmed. More than two decades later, no arrests have been made and Leah has never been found. Was it foul play in the Washington wilderness, or did Leah walk away from her old life? Leah Roberts seemingly took off on a spontaneous cross-country trip to see the beautiful mountains in Washington that her favorite author, Jack Kerouac, had once described. She had been through several tragedies and was living her “second chance” at life, but 9 days after she left her home in North Carolina, her car was found crashed and abandoned. And Leah has never been seen since.  Leah Roberts is currently classified as endangered missing. At the time of her disappearance, she had blonde hair and blue eyes and was about 5'6” and 130lbs. She has a surgical scar on her right hip and a metal rod in her leg. She has pierced ears and dimples. She would be 47 years old today. Hot, and we mean, HOT off the race course in Kona, we have a recap of the women's race from two amazing athletes, Veronique Granger, a Zoot athlete and Leah Roberts, a teammate on IRLAG with us, and also a good friend.  We recorded this the day after their race and the day before the men's race, while sitting overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  This year was the first year that Kona was two days: the women and a few groups of men on Thursday and the pro men and the rest of the men on Saturday. For Leah, this was her fourth Kona and for Veronique, this was her first, so it was interesting to see the similarities and differences in their experiences leading up to this race and at the race.  Racing in Kona truly is like nothing else- from the challenging conditions to the crowds to the unbelievable talent on the race course. Andrew Lumbuye of Uganda, discusses his Lenten perspective and how it provides him a context for selecting songs for Lent, “Lent is a period of soul searching, reconnecting of getting back to the Lord . . . the songs that I have chosen are those that help us to empty ourselves; that help us cry out ourselves to the Lord . . .”   Archbishop Miguel Uchoa of Brazil discusses the Church's mission for lent within the Gospel of John, “Lent is the time of reflection and nothing better to reflect on than the mission of the Church . . . when they {the Apostles Andrew, John, and Peter} learn about Jesus and who Jesus was, they want to spend time with Him – learn from Him. On March 9, 2000, Leah decided to leave her home in Raleigh, North Carolina, and head to the Pacific Northwest where she could focus on self-discovery-- only for her car to be found abandoned a few days later. March 18, 2000. Whatcom County, Washington. A damaged Jeep belonging to 23-year old Leah Roberts is found at the bottom of an embankment next to a remote highway. Nine days earlier, Leah had left her home in North Carolina to take a cross-country road trip, but even though all of her personal possessions are left behind at the accident scene, Leah herself is missing. The investigation eventually uncovers evidence to suggest that the accident might have been staged and the Jeep was unoccupied when it went down the embankment. Further complications are also caused by strange anonymous phone call, as well as a reported eyewitness sighting of Leah with an unidentified man at a shopping mall restaurant. Was Leah Roberts actually inside her vehicle when it crashed or did she fall victim to an unknown third party? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” explores an unsolved missing persons case involving a road trip which turned into a baffling mystery.
