Send us a Text Message.Ever find yourself stuck in a cinematic time warp? That's where Addy and I landed when "Sexy Beast" leaped out from our movie vault. We kick things off with a bewildering opening straight out of a Looney Tunes sketch, before diving into the meat of this unconventional heist film where the loot is less glittering jewels and more the intense, heart-thumping interactions between characters. Listen as we unravel the threads of a narrative spun with the central theme of escaping one's past, and how the formidable Don, played by Ben Kingsley, casts a shadow long enough to chill your spine. What happens when a self-proclaimed 'sexy beast' is stripped of his bravado by a ghost from his old life? We dissect the transformation of our protagonist, whose veil of arrogance is torn away by Don's relentless pursuit, leading to a captivating exploration of power dynamics and masculinity. The film's dream sequences and the significant influence of the protagonist's wife drive our conversation further into the depths of the story's complex psychological landscape. You won't want to miss how we unfold the narrative's symbolism and dissect character arcs that mirror the struggle to sever ties with a life of crime.Wrapping up, we shine a spotlight on Ben Kingsley's tour-de-force performance, which set expectations sky-high for his later roles, like the Mandarin in "Iron Man 3." Plus, we give a nod to the stellar contributions from Ian McShane and Ray Winstone. As we break down the film's artistry, from impactful scene transitions to the authentically flavored British dialogue, our final verdict lands at a generous three and a half stars. This episode peels back the layers of an oddball movie that dares to twist heist film conventions, all woven with humor and everyday banter that breathes life into the script. Support the Show.

Joined by the incisive Adi Aisha, we dissect this raw and unflinching narrative that refuses to choose sides, forcing you, our listeners, to confront the uncomfortable reality of war's true victims. Our spirited discussion scrutinizes the filmmakers' decision to leave the war's origins obscured, raising questions about the impact such omissions have on our understanding of the story and how it reflects the complexities of real-world warfare.Witness the transformation of war journalists from idealistic truth-seekers to desensitized observers in a world that feeds on the chaos of conflict. Adi Aisha and I delve into the role of media in war, using Kaylee Spaney's character as a vessel to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by those who report from the frontlines. The film's controversial ending serves as a crux for our debate, as we navigate the moral quandaries and the consequences of actions taken in the pursuit of the perfect story. We reflect on how the film's portrayal of these character arcs mirrors a broader societal desensitization, especially in the age of social media.Concluding with a critique that balances appreciation of the film's artistic merits against the frustrations of missed narrative potential, our dialogue is an invite to listeners to consider their own stance. The episode is not just a review; it's a contemplation of what "Civil War" achieves in its depiction of the human condition amidst the backdrop of an unending civil strife. Send us a Text Message.Ever wonder how a modern remake stands up to a cult classic? Strap in as Addy Asher and I break down the latest "Roadhouse" remake—where the promise of high-octane thrills meets the harsh reality of missed potential. Without the nostalgia goggles (I'm yet to watch the original), I expected a wild ride but found myself grappling with the film's attempt at humor and a less-than-stellar debut by Conor McGregor. We'll dissect the marketing missteps that might have buried this film's chances at success and debate whether the streaming giant Prime could've given it a better shot at the spotlight. This episode takes the pulse of both versions of "Roadhouse," zeroing in on the heart of the film—the protagonist, Dalton. The original Dalton was a man with depth, his past trauma and strategic thinking adding layers to his tough exterior. Contrast that with the remake's Dalton, who seems to have traded vulnerability for invincibility, and you've got us questioning the impact on our connection to the story. Addy and I tackle the character evolution head-on, musing over the lost anticipation and engagement—a casualty of the remake's action-heavy approach. As the curtains close, we don't hold back on our candid critique of the film's direction and missed opportunities to spotlight Jake Gyllenhaal's prowess. The action scenes, fight choreography, and the rest of the cast under our microscope reveal a film that could have soared but instead plummeted in our esteem. We even revisit those expectations—like the Family Guy-famous roundhouse kick—you won't find in this remake, laying bare how such omissions can leave fans feeling shortchanged. Join us for an unflinching look at a remake that could've been a contender but ended up down for the count. Support the Show.

Imagine, if you can, a world where the pursuit of fame could cost you everything, even your soul. We dive headfirst into the heart of Jack Delroy's character, a late-night host caught in the tangled web of his own ambitions. His moral compass spins wildly as he vies to eclipse none other than Johnny Carson. Through the film's single-location setting, we peel back the layers of a mysterious elite club, hinting at the sinister and secretive, much like the cryptic corridors of "Eyes Wide Shut." Adi and I then shift gears to the darker side of fame. We discuss the shocking extremes some go to for notoriety, contrasting a teenager's assault for TikTok fame with the film's narrative of a Faustian deal that's as costly as life itself. We ponder the eerie similarities between this and the plot of "The Devil's Advocate," where success's shadow looms long and heavy over one's moral fiber. The film's chilling subtext prompts us to question the moral dilemmas we face in our own quests for recognition and the haunting possibility of losing ourselves along the way.But it's not all doom and gloom; we also share a laugh about our own late-night hosting dreams, tossing around the notion of an OnlyFans account as a quirky stepping stone to stardom. We even dare to dream big, issuing a playful challenge for none other than Quentin Tarantino to grace our podcast with his presence. Whether it's through laughter or critical analysis, Adi and I bring our unique perspectives to the fore, critiquing the film's impact and its reflection of our societal obsessions with the limelight.      Today we are joined by Anthony and Denise to discuss the latest horror sensation, Nope. Nope was directed by Jordan Peele, and follows two siblings who discover something wonderful, sinister, and otherworldly. Critics hail Nope as an undeniable success, but the story is riddled with holes and pitfalls, and the unsatisfying ending summates the general feel of the film. It makes one wonder whether critics would think differently if it was directed by someone other than Jordan Peele; it seems he can do no wrong. We talk about the characters and their confusing intentions throughout the movie, how many concepts are great but not fully developed, how the subplot is disconnected from the main plot, and some ideas on how the movie could've been improved. You'll then get a list of other movies of a similar nature that we think are much better than Nope. Ep 80: I WANT MY PIG BACK! - Pig Movie Review

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2022 24:12

Released in 2021, 'Pig' is an intriguing tale.  Pig is not an uplifting film. It's not an action film either. In fact, it's actually quite a depressing film, and certainly the most serious of Nicholas Cage's recent works. It's also a film that I highly recommend. There is so much subtlety and nuance in it, and it touches on some important issues. Nicholas Cage's character in the film was once a successful chef who has renounced his past life and chosen to live in the forest, shut off from the world, with only a pig for company. The storyline starts when the pig is kidnapped. Grief is a theme that runs strongly through Pig, as is the false sense of success that is overwhelmingly prevalent in our society. Be patient with this film, it's worth it.  First, it seems like yet another run of the mill revenge tale about a reclusive man who has his truffle pig kidnapped. Initially, it follows the same cliches as action hits like 'John Wick', but about 10 minutes into this film, you start to realize that this is going to be something so much more. This grim tale of grief and loss examines what it means to be successful, and it's one of the biggest sleeper hits I've seen. Support the show

Today on the show, Michael reviews Morbius, the latest movie to come out of Sony studios. If you were hoping that Morbius would be an improvement on Sony's Venom, prepare to be disappointed. Many of the movies that have come out of Sony studios have been baffling in how terrible their story-lines are. With their wealth of resources and talent, you'd hope that they'd dedicate some portion to creating an original and engaging story. Instead, it repeats the worst mistakes we've seen in superhero movies, from an overreliance on CGI for battle scenes to repeating old uninteresting tropes. The film's editing doesn't fare much better. It lacks cohesion, and with uncomfortable jump cuts, rushed action sequences, and overindulged exposition, the viewer can't help but feel that crucial scenes are missing from the final product. One bright spot in the film is Matt Smith's performance as Milo, who seems to be the only actor with a firm grasp of the type of film he's in. His campiness and enjoyment of his role, despite a disappointing script, bring much-needed levity to the film. Jared Leto, on the other hand, appears to have overcorrected, veering away from his over-the-top performance as the Joker, to a tonally bland performance as Dr. Michael Morbius. Ultimately, this film leaves much to be desired, but if you'd like a spoiler-free review on this disappointing superhero film, then why not tune in for an exasperated reflection on the topic!  Support the show (https://www.facebook.com/TheOzCulturePodcast/)
