We recorded this one a while back but figure what better time than now to check in on James' opinion on good ole' Jack Burton. Enjoy.

In 1982, John Carpenter released The Thing — a film about paranoia in isolation. But beneath the alien horror is a quieter question:Why does crisis always seem to produce the same kind of leader? From Snake Plissken to MacReady to Jack Burton, Carpenter's collaborations with Kurt Russell trace the erosion of the American hero myth. When the Berlin Wall fell, the external enemy collapsed. The crisis logic didn't.It moved inward. This episode explores suspicion, authority, neoliberal shock, and why marginalized spaces are often testing grounds for what eventually reaches the centre.Childs wasn't the threat. He was the warning.—Park Bench Ontology is a series examining culture, identity, and the systems that shape perception.
In this episode of The Broadband Bunch, host Pete Pizzutillo sits down with BSP co-founders David Strauss and Jack Burton to explain the role of technical due diligence in the broadband and digital infrastructure market. The BSP team shares how their firm helps investors, operators, and lenders cut through the noise to evaluate network assets, data centers, and M&A opportunities with confidence. Hear about the realities behind consolidation trends, open access networks, and the growing importance of infrastructure readiness—from wiring craftsmanship to software integration and future capacity planning. David and Jack also discuss what investors are really looking for, how operators can prepare for an eventual exit, and why sell-side diligence can accelerate deals while reducing risk.
Send a textA truck driver who can't stop asking questions, a friend who does the real fighting, and a sorcerer who waited 2,000 years for green eyes—there's a reason Big Trouble in Little China refuses to fade. We dive straight into why this cult classic still sparks debate: the self-aware camp, the electric synths, the rain-soaked neon, and the audacity of casting a swaggering, lovable bumbler as your poster hero.We break down Kurt Russell's Jack Burton as a brilliant misdirect—loud, lost, but weirdly brave—while Wang carries the narrative weight and the martial arts grace. That inversion lets John Carpenter poke holes in the American hero myth without losing the popcorn thrills. From practical monsters and the iconic knife throw to uneven but ambitious fight staging, we pull apart the craft that makes the movie sing. And yes, we talk about the moments that age poorly—forced flirtations, accented English used among Chinese characters—and how the satire lands alongside the stereotypes.Carpenter's fingerprints are everywhere: the synth-driven score that snaps scenes into focus, the pulpy color palette that turns Chinatown into a fever dream, and the long partnership with Russell that keeps risk-taking fun. We trace cultural ripples into 90s pop culture, Mortal Kombat parallels, and why this film bombed before becoming midnight-movie royalty. Two of us call it pure five-star joy; one of us gives it a thoughtful seven, intrigued enough to chase The Thing next. Whether you rewatch for the set design, the one-liners, or that thunder-lit ceiling shot, there's big charm in this little slice of cinematic chaos.Hit play, ride with the Pork Chop Express, and tell us: is Jack Burton a hero, a decoy, or the perfect mix of both? We're talking about a movie where the hero is arguably the sidekick, ancient Chinese magic involves lightning bolts and floating heads, and the true protagonist might just be Kurt Russell's unparalleled confidence in the face of utter bewilderment. Join us as we try to unpack how this glorious, nonsensical masterpiece manages to be simultaneously one of the greatest action-comedies ever made and a solid argument for why truck drivers should probably stick to driving trucks. James, Nick, Wang, and Egg Shen are here to actually do something about it. A fresh look, a deep dive, and a full review that's all in the reflexes is here! Thanks for tuning in. Time to have some laughs with Sensei Randy as we review (spoiler alert) a Great movie from the 1980s. We'll move to the 90s for the next review, but today we talk about a cult classic. And how it didn't make money at the theater, but did later on. Here's a weird factoid: when I was searching on line for a graphic, I came across action figures of Jack Burton and other characters. Also, Kim Cattrall is in this movie. Sorry Kim, that we didn't get to mentioning that in the episode. Too much talk about the fighting! We do, however, reference Conan the Barbarian. We talked about him in an earlier episode. Want to listen:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/16255373Thank you for tuning us in. Got a minute? Welcome to a new sub-series of the podcast devoted to screenplays for movies that never got made. There are tons of famous screenplays from Oliver Stone's first draft of Conan to Del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness. For each episode in this series, we will read and review a script that never got made. In this episode, I am joined by author Anthony Trevino and Musician/Filmmaker Issa Diao to discuss The unproduced TV movie sequel to Big Trouble in Little China written by Innerspace screenwriter Charles “Chip” Proser. What did a Jack Burton-less direct-to-TV sequel to the 80s classic look like. At least it was focused on Egg Shen. Note: This episode had tons of technical difficulties, starting with Issa's video, which is why there is no video, then my microphone came unplugged and I never noticed. So sorry for the quality.

A rollicking good time! John Carpenter delivers an absurd cult classic, with help from super trucker Jack Burton! Cory Kesselring joins Luke & Corrye to discuss the fight choreography, the location of Little China, and the downside of the often forgotten prelude. Among the other hot topics: the three Rayden villains and their comically-huge hats; the imitation Kurt Russell is doing throughout the entire film; the warm blanket that is Egg Shen (Victor Wong); and the consistenly punchable Lo Pan. PLUS: The Chumps bid farewell...sort of.

Greetings! In the season four finale of Stamper Cinema we return to the world of John Carpenter, with the 1986 cult-classic BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses: In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison. The Thing catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility. Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan needs Wang's green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

In a recent Ted Talk, actor Ethan Hawke said "Most of us really want to offer the world something of quality something that the world will consider good or important. And that's really the enemy because it's not up to us whether what we do is any good. And if history has taught us anything the world is an extremely unreliable critic. Right. So you have to ask yourself do you think human creativity matters? Well hmm most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about poetry right? They have a life to live and they're not really that concerned with Allen Ginsberg's poems or anybody's poems until their father dies. They go to a funeral you lose a child somebody breaks your heart. They don't love you anymore. And all of a sudden you're desperate for making sense out of this life. And has anybody ever felt this bad before? How did they come out of this cloud?Or the inverse something great. You meet somebody and your heart explodes. You love them so much you can't even see straight. You know you're dizzy. Did anybody feel like this? What is happening to me?HUMAN CREATIVITY IS NATURE MANIFEST IN US. And that's when art's not a luxury. It's actually sustenance. We need it.In this episode we explore this idea with interviews and performances by Chris Dye, Sonora Expolosiva Dinamita, Jack Burton and we learn the about the art of Jiu Jitsu. Plus all that is happen' in Lockhart through August 6th. Join us! Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/78644/exclusive-content
Big Trouble in Little China is 80's perfection!Like we always say, life is a highway and sometimes you gotta pull over and watch a movie from the 80's. That's right, and we'll tell ya to do what The Nomad's of Fantasy would do in a situation like this. They'd watch Big Trouble in Little China and then talk about with their buddy Mike from the Games My Mom Found podcast. And another thing, they'd probably do Jack Burton impressions because, hey, can you blame 'em?So hop in the truck, sit back, relax, and enjoy the conversation. And if you plan on sticking around until the end, maybe you'll enjoy a round of Movie 20 Questions.Safe travels, nomads.
The birthday of our all-time favorite, Mr. Kurt Russell, is right around the corner so the ReconCinemation team unites to look back at one of his and John Carpenter's best: BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA! Jon, David, Brent and special guest Joe Cetta (of the It Happened One Year podcast) take a deep-dive into the origins of the story, the early creative direction by Gary Goldman & David Weinstein, John Carpenter's entry into the project & where his standing was post-THE THING and, of course, Kurt Russell's magical career. They look at how BIG TROUBLE played an important role in Kurt's career, the character of Jack Burton and who the true "hero" of the movie is. Plus, early memories of the film, the incredible soundtrack, the excellent cast, the troubled release & fallout thereafter, where the films stand racially from today's perspective, the Drew Struzan poster and so much more!
