Pierre Poilievre has been sitting in a comfortable lead in the polls, until recently. The emergence of Mark Carney in the Liberal leadership race is putting pressure on the PM-hopeful. How can he strengthen his stance on Canadian culture and furthering his 'stop the crime' agenda? Lydia Perovic and Steven Penney share some ideas. Water sharing between Canada and the U.S. has long been a contentious issue. President Donald Trump is putting it in the headlines again. Tricia Stadnyk with the University of Calgary tells us what the President is after and if it could further strain Canada's relationship with its southern neighbour. We all remember the devastating Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. Logan Boulet was one of the players killed. His parents Toby and Bernadine have championed Green Shirt Day to honour their son. Green Shirt Day is in support of organ donor awareness and registration across Canada. It's Green Shirt Day! We are re-sharing last year's conversation with the Boulet family. New year and new episode art… same conversation, same beautiful family. Today—April 7th—is Green Shirt Day, and we had the pleasure of chatting with Logan Boulet's family. Logan is the inspiration behind Green Shirt Day and the Logan Boulet Effect. On April 6, 2018, the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus was involved in a crash that shattered the hearts of Canadians. 16 of the 29 passengers on the Humboldt team bus lost their lives in the crash, and Logan was one of them. He succumbed to his injuries on April 7th, 2018. Following his passing, his organs saved or enhanced the lives of six other Canadians. This sparked organ donation across Canada which became known as the Logan Boulet Effect. Now April 7th is known as Green Shirt Day—a day to bring awareness to organ donation, and the impact that Logan's decision to donate his organs had on a nation.  We get to know to Logan's parents, Toby & Bernie, and his sister, Mariko. They share their own athletic histories, their favourite memories of Logan, and Logan's unplanned legacy. The Boulets are the most beautiful and authentic family, and we hope you get as much out of our conversation as we did! Sandhill, Green Day, and grass on the other side - An OBVIOU5 Voice – Episode 32  Wet Your Whistle Wednesday  Sandhill Wines.  April is BC wine month. This is something that British Columbia is doing with all of its wineries.  This is how we're going to promote it and maybe we can find a way to bring more BC wines to Alberta because we deserve it. British Columbia has amazing vineyards.  Their location is just off of Clement, 1125 Richter Street.  The people that are giving you these taste testers are so knowledgeable and extremely smart, the atmosphere in Sandhill, in general, is amazing. The place that they have is not their actual vineyard.  Sandhill Wines actually has six vineyards in southern BC; Sand Hill Estates, Kings Family, Phantom Creek, Osprey Ridge, Hidden Terrace, and Vanessa Vineyards. So those six are completely different, and that way they can produce so many different wines, every grape needs different sunlight, different soil, and different love.  The addition of Gretzky Wines putting a bunch of money for an expansion in their Calona Vineyards,   Parenting  Positivity for our children, they are adaptable. They've been completely wonderful during this whole thing for over a year now. With closures of sports, swimming areas, seeing their friends, other than school. It's tough for them.  Mental Health  I made the mistake of stepping on a scale.  Four-part series.   Body, Mind, Soul, and Community.  This week we're going to focus on the body.  Yoga with Adriene. She is absolutely phenomenal and she was the first one I did my 30-Day Challenge with.  Walking, closing rings, set of pushups, squats, sit-ups, and jumping jacks, three times every day. That's the new plan for our in-house gym that we have set up here.  Dapper  We're going into fashion, thank you, Gen Zed, for getting rid of the skinny jeans, skinny jeans were never my bag I could never wear them it was never my thing. I still have my jeans from high school, and I love the baggy loose fit.   Green Shirt Day  This is the anniversary of the Humbolt Broncos crash that happened last year  Logan Boulet before that crash had actually registered as an organ donor. And that's what green shirt day is about. If you haven't, take your time to register as an organ donor. Because if something were to happen to you. The number of lives that you can save moving forward is amazing.   Dad Tip of the Day  “Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side... because it's fake.”    Sandhill Wines  Yoga with Adriene  Green Shirt Day  Humbolt Broncos  @CaptainOBVIOU5

In a tragedy that shook Canada and the rest of the hockey playing world, just before 5:00pm on April 6, 2018, the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey team smashed into a semi that had just blown through a stop at the intersection of Saskatchewan highways 35 and 335. Of the the 29 people on the bus that day, only 13 survived. The truck driver walked away unharmed, and was later charged with and convicted of 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 more counts of dangerous driving causing injury.  One player, 21-year-old defenseman Logan Boulet, had signed his donor card only 5 weeks before the crash and his death. His thoughtful gift saved the lives of six organ recipients. Logan’s selfless actions led droves of other Canadians to sign their donor cards, creating what has been called the #LoganBouletEffect. This remains the largest number of donors pledging their organs from a single event; 100,000 in the first three weeks. To keep the effect going his family helped to create Green Shirt Day in 2019, observed on April 7, the anniversary of Logan’s passing.  Sources and Further Reading: [Humboldt Broncos] [Humboldt Broncos bus crash - Wikipedia] [9 Apr 2018, NP1 - The National Post at Newspapers.com] [Home - Green Shirt Day] [Green Shirt Day - Home | Facebook] [Green Shirt Day (@GreenShirtDay) | Twitter] [Green Shirt Day (@greenshirtday) • Instagram photos and videos] [Report On Intersection Review | Government of Saskatchewan] [ER doctor recalls Humboldt Broncos crash response - YouTube] [Rod Stewart pays tribute to Humboldt Broncos | Globalnews.ca] [Logan Boulet taken off life support, organs donated  | Globalnews.ca] [COVID-19 forcing Green Shirt Day campaign changes | Global News] [Agreed statement of facts - Humboldt Broncos bus crash] [Guilty plea in Humboldt Broncos bus crash  | Globalnews.ca] [Driver in Humboldt crash wasn’t distracted | CBC News] [Adam Herold Legacy Foundation] [SEARCH: Global News Humboldt - YouTube] [Swift Current Broncos bus crash - Wikipedia] R v Sidhu, 2019 SKPC 19 (CanLII), < [http://canlii.ca/t/hzbj5] > Support the show.

We look at the motivation behind Green Shirt Day and how his parents are hoping to create a lasting legacy out of their son’s final act of giving. Dave is joined by Calgary Herald columnist Licia Corbella.

This Saturday marks one year since the crash that involved the Humboldt Broncos hockey team. Logan Boulet was one of the players who died in the crash. Before his death, the 21-year-old decided to become an organ donor.  Six organ recipients benefited from that decision. April 7th will mark the inaugural Green Shirt Day. It's a national movement that seeks to inspire Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors. It also intends to honour, remember and recognize all the victims and families of the tragic crash. We wanted to have that conversation on the air now - and we wanted to talk about what organ donation means for those who receive a transplant. Before we came on-air I spoke with Bet Tuason. He received a kidney transplant last year, and he told us what one person's decision to become an organ donor has changed his life. Guest: Bet Tuason Received a kidney transplant last year; advocate for better transport services for transplant patients

Your hosts this week are Lynn Desjardins, Levon Sevunts, Marie-Claude Simard and Carmel Kilkenny.  (Video of show at bottom of page) ListenEN_Interview_2-20180413-WIE20 Humboldt Broncos hockey player Logan Boulet had signed an organ donation card, inspiring other Canadians to do the same in the wake of his death. (Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League) Humboltd, Saskatchewan has been in the national spotlight for the last week, following the tragic accident there. A transport trailer collided with the bus carrying the town's young hockey players, leaving 16 people dead to date, and another 13 severely injured Just a few weeks ago, 21-year old Logan Boulet had signed an organ donation card and talked to his family about why. When it became clear he would not survive the accident, he was placed on life support and several of his organs were retrieved by surgeons. These will help six people who are waiting for transplants. News of this inspired many Canadians to sign up to donate their own organs in the event of death. Several provinces in Canada noted big increases in their registries. Lynn Desjardins spoke with Michael Terner, the program lead for the Canadian Organ Replacement Register at the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Monsanto’s Roundup Ready soybean seeds. (Dan Gill/AP) The US Dept of Justice gave provisional approval to the takeover of bio-tech giant Monsanto by German chemical giant Bayer, this week. Both organizations are already huge multinationals in the global agricultural market. The multi-billion dollar deal now greatly reduces the competition in agricultural chemicals and seeds. Meanwhile two giant fertilizer companies, Potash Corp and Agrium, have merged to form the company, Nutrien. ChinaChem and Syngenta combined in another chemical and bio tech mega merger worth billions of dollars. And Dow and Dupont did the same. Farmers world-wide fear the global agricultural market is now clearly dominated by just three or four huge corporations. This means likely increased costs for fertilzers and disease and pest control chemicals, more genetically modified crops and fewer varieties of crops, and increased costs for consumers. Marc Montgomery spoke to Jan Slomp, vice president of Canada's National Farmers Union, and asked him about their concerns over this latest mega merger. Rohingya refugee children fly improvised kites at the Kutupalong camp near Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, on December 10, 2017. (Damir Sagolj/Reuters) Dr. Megan Doherty is a pediatrician and palliative care specialist who works at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). She recently returned from a trip to Bangladesh where she and some colleagues visited the Rohingya refugee camps. She was struck by the lack of palliative care. A little 4-year-old girl who was suffering horrible headaches due to eye cancer was one case that really moved her. In an interview this week, Dr Doherty told Levon Sevunts, there was nothing she could do. The little girl died in terrible pain because the clinics in these camps do not have the medicine to treat and manage pain in chronically or terminally ill patients. Now she is trying to raise awareness about this hidden crisis in refugee camps. Dr. Doherty says with so many resources going to save lives, there is little left for those who are beyond saving.
