On this week's podcast, we check out Normal, which features Bob Odenkirk as a hangdog lawman who's been assigned as the temporary sheriff of a small town in Minnesota called Normal. But, you guessed it, it turns out this sleepy town and its quaint residents aren't that normal at all. Much punching, shooting and exploding ensues in this B-movie action flick from director Ben Wheatley and writer Derek Kolstad, who created the John Wick and Nobody franchises. Then we're off to Malaysia for Queer as Punk, a meditative documentary following the queer punk band Shh... Diam!, whose music and existence stand in protest against the rise of anti-LGBTQ sentiment from the Malaysian government. And finally, after much discussion and confusion on The CineSkinny WhatsApp group chat, we discuss the subtle art of cinematography and ask what draws people to certain cinematographic styles and aesthetics… or something. Warbird #0 from Bad Idea Comics introduces Cole Norton, a high-end repo man capable of stealing anything that rides, flies, or floats. Written by Robert Venditti and Derek Kolstad with art by Jesse Lonergan, the issue delivers high-octane action through "The Bike Job," where Cole infiltrates a luxury yacht to repossess an experimental motorcycle. While the premise leans heavily on spectacle, the issue also hints at deeper motivations driving Cole. His precision, control, and detachment suggest that the work itself may matter more than the payout, raising the question of whether each job is less about money and more about avoiding his past while taking something back from the powerful people he targets. The issue functions as both an action showcase and a character setup, laying the groundwork for the larger Warbird mission involving advanced fighter jets and escalating global stakes.
When you think of some small town in Minnesota, do you think of action, intrigue, explosive excitement? No? Me neither. I think of ice augers, hot dish and grumpy old men, not automatic weapons, rocket launchers and C4 explosives. This week's movie, “Normal”, might just blow your mind about small town Minnesota. Bob Odenkirk stars as Sheriff Ulysses Richardson who is serving as the temporary sheriff in the small town of Normal, Minnesota. At first it's what he expects. Overly friendly people, potlucks and snow. Along the way, he sees some suspicious things that make his curiosity alarm bells go off such as the police armory with a weapons stockpile you could invade a small country with. Then a bank robbery lights the fuse on the town having to reveal its dark secret to the new sheriff and soon it's adios Minnesota nice, hello Minnesota mayhem. Is it worth checking this out at the theater? Watch this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “Normal” also stars Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Lena Headey, Henry Winkler, Reena Jolly, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Shinkoda, Jess McLeod and David Lawrence Brown. I guess you think you're... you know, like an authority figure, with that stupid fuckin' uniform, huh buddy? Bob Odenkirk goes from Nobody to playing a “Normal” small-town interim sheriff. Teaming up again with Derek Kolstad, does he bring the same mix of dry humor and sudden violence that made their last series work? And with Henry Winkler in the wintery mix, are we getting something closer to the quirky crime chaos of Fargo, or just another round of bumbling crooks? Nearly nobody went to see this in theaters, but our hosts did, and you can join them now for this far-from-normal movie review!
Normal & The Mummy: A Double Feature Worth Your Time (Spoiler-Free) | WatchSkip+Cupcake and Mike are doing something a little different this week — a genuine double feature review, clocking in under 30 minutes. First, they dig into Normal (2025), the new Ben Wheatley action-comedy written by Derek Kolstad and Bob Odenkirk. Is it just Nobody again? Not even close — and the guys break down why this deeply weird, gory, surprisingly soulful film deserves your attention in theaters right now. Then they turn to Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2025), the Blumhouse/Atomic Monster horror that has the internet divided. Jack Reynor leads a cast through something that plays less like a classic mummy tale and more like a psychological body horror spiral in the vein of Evil Dead Rise and Pet Sematary. Mindframes Show Notes Normal (2026) Directed by: Ben Wheatley Written by: Derek Kolstad Starring: Bob Odenkirk, Lena Headey, Henry Winkler IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31195136/ Episode Summary In this episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave break down Normal (2026), a genre-blending action thriller from Ben Wheatley starring Bob Odenkirk as a temporary small-town sheriff uncovering a hidden criminal system beneath a seemingly quiet Minnesota town. The discussion explores the film's strengths—particularly its sharp, inventive action sequences—while wrestling with its weaker character development and underdeveloped thematic ambitions. Along the way, the hosts compare Normal to films like No Country for Old Men, Fargo, and Hot Fuzz, asking whether the film earns its ideas about morality, violence, and the illusion of "normality." Thematic Discussion Normal presents the idea that "normality" is not peace or order, but a fragile illusion maintained by hidden systems of violence and compromise. The film suggests that communities—and individuals—often accept morally compromised structures in exchange for stability, even when those systems are corrupt. However, while the idea is compelling, the film struggles to fully develop or emotionally ground this thesis, leaving it more implied than earned. ⏱️ Timestamps Time Segment 00:00 Intro & setup 00:25 Film overview + premise 02:14 Ben Wheatley career discussion 05:39 Derek Kolstad influence & action style 08:05 Cast discussion (Odenkirk, Headey, Winkler) 11:20 Odenkirk as "underestimated man" archetype 13:30 Character depth debate (Michael vs Dave) 16:30 "Should this have been a miniseries?" 18:45 Action vs drama effectiveness 20:00 Michael's review (★★★☆☆) 24:30 Dave's review (★★★☆☆) 29:30 Comparisons: No Country, Fargo, Hot Fuzz 36:30 ⚠️ Spoiler section begins 36:40 Reveal: the town's Yakuza deal 38:30 Debate: Is the central mystery… boring? 40:25 Moral ambiguity discussion 46:30 Thematic breakdown: what is "normal"? 50:45 Civil War comparison (hidden violence) 54:00 Final interpretation debate 58:00 Closing thoughts
Bob Odenkirk has pivoted from sketch comedy to dramatic acting and, most recently, to late-middle-aged action star. In the new film Normal, he plays a small-town sheriff who finds out his small town isn't so normal after all, which will of course require some sexagenarian butt-kicking. The cast includes Henry Winkler and Lena Headey, and was written by Derek Kolstad, the mind behind the John Wick franchise. Bob Odenkirk playing a small-town interim sheriff squaring off against the Yakuza is not a sentence that should make sense, let alone sell a movie. It sounds like a dare, or the kind of idea you giggle at before moving on. And yet, “Normal” takes that slightly absurd premise and treats it with just enough sincerity, grit, and tonal whiplash to make you lean in instead of check out (read our review). The film, starring Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul,” “Nobody”) and written by Derek Kolstad— the screenwriting architect behind all the “John Wick” films— follows a small-town sheriff named Ulysses who finds himself pulled into a spiraling situation involving organized crime, buried history, and a small, quiet town that's about to get a lot louder.READ MORE: ‘Balls Up': Mark Wahlberg, Paul Walter Hauser and Peter Farrelly Go All-In On R-Rated Chaos, ‘Transformers,' ‘Resident Evil', ‘I Play Rocky,' Marvel and More [The Discourse Podcast]It works because “Normal” doesn't behave like a single movie. It slyly shapeshifts. A dry, slightly offbeat character piece suddenly turns tense and violent, then veers into dark comedy, a thriller, and back again. The movie wants you to feel those shifts, to adjust in real time, preferably with a crowd that's hooting and hollering right alongside you.
"Normal" is a 2025 American action film directed by Ben Wheatley and written by Derek Kolstad, based on a story by Kolstad and Bob Odenkirk. Odenkirk also stars in the film alongside Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film premiered in the Midnight Madness program at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and received positive reviews for its practical action, small-town dark comedy, and Odenkirk's performance. This week on BEHIND THE LENS it's all about "To See or Not To See", and after hearing today's exclusive interviews with BEN WHEATLEY discussing NORMAL and ANEIL KARIA talking all things HAMLET, I think you'll agree that the answer will easily be – Must See. Both of these films are fresh and fantastic, from story to performances to production values. First up today is director ANEIL KARIA talking about HAMLET starring Riz Ahmed. It takes guts to handle Shakespeare and adapt and reimagine, but director Aneil Karia did an amazing job with HAMLET. One of the most interesting aspects of the film comes courtesy of Michael Lesslie's screenplay. Michael did a wonderful job adapting "Macbeth" for director Justin Kurzel, and once again delivers a Shakespearean adaptation that is relatable and attainable for today's audience with HAMLET. Switching gears and genres, we head to the small town of NORMAL with director BEN WHEATLEY. I love Ben Wheatley's work, be it High Rise, Free Fire, Rebecca, Meg 2, or now, NORMAL. Ben can tackle any genre and always delivers first-rate films with high production values, excellent performances, and, in many cases, go-for-broke action and intensity. I have to put NORMAL in the latter category. Directed by Ben Wheatley and written by the brilliant Derek Kolstad, and starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL is the latest collaboration from this powerhouse team. Described as a kinetic neo-Western action film with Odenkirk as an unassuming substitute sheriff with a troubled past who, after moving to a quaint Midwestern town, responds to a bank robbery and unknowingly uncovers something far more explosive. NORMAL is weird, wacky, and wonderful, brimming with originality, spurting blood, fantastic action, great deadpan humor, and first-rate performances. It is an absolute blast. When was the last time you watched folks covering up dead bodies and bright red blood with snow, and be thankful for having had a blizzard?? http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch might be the most unexpected comeback in gaming history: an animated Netflix series based on a franchise that's been dormant for a decade. MonteCristo and DoA dive deep into Ubisoft's strange revival of Sam Fisher, the stealth-action legend who's now older, grizzled, and apparently stuck in an anime-style John Wick universe created by Derek Kolstad. In this episode, the hosts debate whether Deathwatch is a solid espionage thriller or just a messy prelude to Ubisoft's upcoming Splinter Cell remake. They discuss the show's surprising violence, chaotic hacking scenes, and the questionable logic of “chaos algorithms,” plus the performances of Liev Schreiber as Sam Fisher and the legacy of Michael Ironside's voice. “As you do draft after draft, it becomes shorter and rendered down. And [Keanu Reeves and I] would go through scenes going, ‘Can people say less? Can the action be tighter? Can the action sequence be shorter?' The action is an extension of the hero's journey and if you don't give a sh*t about the character, it doesn't matter how great your action is,” says Derek Kolstad about his writing process with actor Keanu Reeves when they worked on the script that would become John Wick and spark an entire franchise. On today's episode, we speak with screenwriter Kolstad about his masterful John Wick action movies and his new animated TV show, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch based on the popular video game. Kolstad also shares his surprising advice for coming up with action scenes that feel fresh and inventive by going back to the silent era. “Look at Buster Keaton. Harold Lloyd, and Fatty Arbuckle, the Keystone Cops. Look at how those sequences were done, and then there's Asian cinema, you know? What I love about the things that I've been a part of is there's always this sense of humor at play. Nothing's so dark and so bleak that you're not enjoying it.” To hear more, listen to the podcast.
Key sequences include Hutch losing his pinky, the warehouse blaze, brutal lodge fight, and the explosive theme park showdown where Becca herself steps up to protect the family. Nobody 2 mixes intense fight choreography, pitch-black humor, and family drama in classic action style. We'll dive into how Hutch's story evolves, whether it tops the first film, and how the sequel expands the world of this surprise action franchise. Fresh off the surprise success of 2014's John Wick, Summit Entertainment knew they had a hit on their hands. Better yet, they knew they had the beginning of what looked like a fruitful franchise. So they tried gathering the band back together again in hopes of continued financial achievement. But while star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski, as well as writer Derek Kolstad were quickly onboard for the sequel, co-director David Leitch had other plans. More opportunities arose as the result of John Wick's success, and Leitch wanted to grab that iron while it was still hot. Movies like Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 were what he decided to move on to. But where does that leave John Wick Chapter 2, and would Leitch's absence be a bad omen for the future of the franchise? Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they answer those questions, as well as give an in depth (and some would say surprising) review of 2017's more successful John Wick sequel, John Wick Chapter 2. Next week, John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum.

With Indonesian action director Timo Tjahjanto stepping into the director's chair and returning screenwriter Derek Kolstad (along with Aaron Rabin) setting the story in the fictional vacation town of Plummerville, there are enough new elements to warrant a sequel, but how do they all mix together? fWotD Episode 2855: John Wick (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 27 February 2025 is John Wick (film).John Wick is a 2014 American action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad. Keanu Reeves stars as John Wick, a legendary hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe.Kolstad's script drew on his interest in action, revenge, and neo noir films. The producer Basil Iwanyk purchased the rights as his first independent film production. Reeves, whose career was declining, liked the script and recommended that the experienced stunt choreographers Stahelski and David Leitch direct the action scenes; Stahelski and Leitch successfully lobbied to co-direct the project. Principal photography began in October 2013, on a $20–$30 million budget, and concluded that December. Stahelski and Leitch focused on long, highly choreographed single takes to convey action, eschewing the rapid cuts and closeup shots of contemporary action films.Iwanyk struggled to secure theatrical distributors because industry executives were dismissive of an action film by first-time directors, and Reeves's recent films had financially underperformed. Lionsgate Films purchased the distribution rights to the film two months before its release date on October 24, 2014. Following a successful marketing campaign that changed its perception from disposable entertainment to a prestige event helmed by an affable leading actor, John Wick exceeded box-office projections and became a modest success, grossing $86 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews for its style and its action sequences. Critics hailed John Wick as a comeback for Reeves, in a role that played to his acting strengths. The film's mythology of a criminal underworld with rituals and rules was praised as its most distinctive and interesting feature.John Wick began a successful franchise which includes three sequels (John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)), the prequel television series The Continental (2023), and the spin-off film Ballerina (2025), as well as video games and comic books. It is seen as having revitalized the action genre and popularized long single takes with choreographed, detailed action. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:56 UTC on Thursday, 27 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see John Wick (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.
