Serial entrepreneur Kevin Garber discusses the challenges of finding the right idea and solving problems for startups. He emphasizes that overthinking ideas can hinder progress and suggests that building upon existing concepts can lead to success. He shares insights from his entrepreneurial journey, including his experiences with Managed Flitter, a social media app. Kevin highlights the importance of adapting to changes and finding ways to provide value in the startup world. The episode delves into his current venture, Zlinky, a mobile and web app focused on bookmark and image organization. The conversation touches on the thrill of entrepreneurship, learning from failures, and the rewarding feeling of making a positive impact. Problem: As huge content consumers, there was a lack of tooling around storing and organising these links. Solution: Zlinky helps to store and organise all your saved links including bookmarks, articles, videos, etc into one place. One big piece of advice: Keep learning and pulling all the different levers, and try not to compare yourself to others in the tech press. Sometimes it's very easy to think everyone is crushing it very easily, which is not the case. BIG CHANGES TO FACEBOOK AS RELEASED DURING THE FB SUMMIT BIG NEWS from the Facebook Communities Summit. Coming soon: formatted posts for group admins. YOU WILL KNOW WHICH FACEBOOK BUSINESSES ARE SHARING YOUR INFO! Facebook has taken some steps to prevent companies from recklessly using your data for targeted ads, but now it might put pressure on them to come clean. As of February 28th, Facebook's "why am I seeing this ad?" button will show who (if anyone) uploaded the contact info that led to a sales pitch. You'll know if it comes straight from the source, like a retailer, or if the company relied on an outside partner to gather the data. Read more here. IGTV IS COMING TO THE INSTAGRAM FEED IGTV is coming to IG Feed - Now it is possible to play IGTV videos longer than 1 minute via the Instagram feed and profile. When uploading a new IGTV video just select the appropriate option. I personally think that this may be due to the fact that no-one ever clicks on IGTV - so they are going to spread the word and put it into the regular feed. (I may be wrong!). Read the Mashable article here. SPOTIFY ACQUIRES GIMLET MEDIA AND ANCHOR This is Spotify's way of expanding their growth into the world of Podcasting. With these acquisitions, Spotify is positioned to become both the premier producer of podcasts and the leading platform for podcast creators. This development will certainly hurt iTunes and Sticher Radio! The Guardian article is here. DO YOU STILL HAVE A FLICKR ACCOUNT? Flickr announced plans to discontinue the free 1TB of storage space that was previously granted to users, restricting free users to only 1.000 photographs. Beginning Tuesday, February 5, Flickr will start deleting photos from accounts to bring them within 1,000 photos. Read the full details here. YOUTUBE EXPANDS IT'S EXPLORE FEATURES I am rather excited about this new development. As Google Plus comes to the end of its life we are starting to see more and more features appearing on other YouTube Channels, and YouTube is no exception. YouTube is finally giving the less popular creators a bit of a voice! Find out more here. GOODBYE MANAGEFLITTER! If you have been using ManageFlitter, Crowdfire or StatusBrew then your Twitter experience is about to change dramatically. Twitter has suspended these three prominent social media companies that enable clients to rapidly follow and unfollow accounts using the Twitter API. This is a popular strategy for increasing followers, but a practice that's largely seen as spammy. Read the announcement here. Tool of the week - Remove.bg This is wicked! A free tool that lets you remove the background of an image automatically! Upload a photo, press a button and then download your new image (background free!). It is just brilliant (and free!). Desktop tool - try it out here.
If you're like me and you use Twitter you probably haven't given much thought to your approach to the platform over the last few years. Plagued by controversy and with zero growth, the future of Twitter was considered treacherous, to say the least. While it has remained popular with politicians, journalists and other elites, there's a growing sense of renaissance to the Twitter platform. Recent changes to its algorithm, character limit and the removal of automated bots are signalling a more rosy period for the platform. Indeed Twitter is surpassing Facebook and Google as the dominant place for news. This, in turn, is causing people like me to reconsider how I use it. In short, I need to up my game. It's easy to get stuck in a rut with how you use certain tools and platforms like Twitter. But if you're doing social media the same as you were even just a year then you are probably doing it wrong. Or, rather, not doing everything right. Below is a list of tactics that I'm currently deploying to up my Twitter game. Consider this a phase I strategy with phase II focusing more on tweet formats and other users. Feel free to use them or add your own in the comments. Clean your 'following' list The value of Twitter is in the people you follow. The more your followers contribute to the platform the more value you will get from it. If you've been using Twitter for a while you will have likely accumulated people you follow but don't engage with. Maybe it's because your focus has changed, perhaps it's because they rarely tweet or they might just use Twitter purely as a distribution channel for their links. These are accounts that add no value to your Twitter experience and will likely be pulling down your score in the Twitter algorithm. Give your Twitter follower list a clean to discover: Irrelevant Twitter accounts (inc those that don't follow you)Who hasn't tweeted in a whileWho is just tweeting links to their own platforms To do 1 and 2 you can use a service like Manageflitter which will help you identify these accounts easily. #1 Unfollow irrelevant Twitter accounts If they are no longer relevant unfollow them. You may have followed some accounts when you were interested in a particular subject but are no more. Your Twitter follower list should evolve as you do and sometimes that means culling certain accounts you're no longer interested in. If this is the case, use one of the services mentioned above to identify and unfollow them. #2 Unfollow those who haven't tweeted recently Here you have to be a little ruthless. Accounts that rarely update or haven't been updated in a while are a lag on your algorithmic scoring. The less active your followers are the less average engagement you'll receive which impacts how the algorithm scores you. Even if they're family, friends or colleagues unfollow them which sounds pretty ruthless and cut-throat but the truth is if they rarely tweet then they probably don't care about Twitter anyway. How long does someone have to be inactive on Twitter before you unfollow them? I'm pretty harsh. If they haven't updated in two weeks they're gone. Twitter is real time so if you're not on there regularly then there's no value. #3 Unfollow those who use it just to tweet links to their own sites Unfollow any people that use their Twitter profile as a means to share links to their blog or company website. These are people who don't use Twitter as a platform to engage or to provide anything meaningful. Chances are if you tweeted to them they wouldn't see it as they don't check their replies. Block fake followers If your Twitter profile has a lot of fake accounts following you, it will drag your algorithm score down. Why? Because Twitter will assume you're trying to inflate your numbers to appear more influential than you are. Many people do this. Use a service like TwitterAudit to analyze how many of your followers it says are fak...

I'm really, really looking forward to today's show, because I love when we have a guest on, so as all the listeners know, we tend to try and find guests that are running large virtual teams so that we can actually get that sort of inside scoop from them on how we actually can get more success with this and what the benefits of it actually are. Today's guest, I'm really happy to welcome Kevin Garber, who is the CEO and co-founder of a fantastic tool called ManageFlitter, which I am currently trialling at the moment. We'll get into what that is in just a second, and he's also the host of the It's a Monkey Podcast, which talks all things tech, entrepreneurship, scalable business. Kevin, welcome to the show. Kevin: Thank you so much for inviting me on. I'm excited to be here. Barbara: Yeah, and I know, we've talked before you've got some great insights to share, I guess, around the journey with virtual teams and the benefits, I guess, of global talent pools versus more local talent pools and all that sort of thing. Before we kick off into that, give us the ManageFlitter story. What is ManageFlitter, and why should we care? What is ManageFlitter? Kevin: ManageFlitter is a set of search filtering and sort tools that sits on top of your Twitter account, helps you work smarter and faster with Twitter. We have paid customers from over 100 countries, although the bulk, at the moment, in the United States, and the bulk of our users are people that use social a lot. They use Twitter a lot. They use our product to clean up their account. They use our product to grow their account with the right followers, to search for people tweeting about certain topics and to easily follow them in a compliant way that keeps Twitter happy and keeps your account in good shape. It's a nice set of tools for people that use Twitter a lot. We've been around since 2010. The tool was actually built internally first for myself, so I discovered Twitter on a trip to San Francisco. I can't remember, it was 2008 or 2009 and I started using Twitter quite a lot,
In this episode, we focus on working with influencer communities to build your brand by using collaborations, workshops, Facebook Live and even your own platforms. Back in Episode 19, we went into depth about How to Build Your Community Using Joint Venture Partnerships. We recommend that you listen to that episode as a companion to this one Building Community Collaborations Lee Odden from TopRank Marketing often works with trade shows and associations to create ebooks for download before a conference. He collaborates with tradeshow attendees who download the ebooks and share it with their companies and friends. He also creates lists every year, starting with the list 25 Women That Rock Social Media. Every year, he asks those featured for their recommendations for the next list. He has done this very successfully for a number of years. The #SocialROI Chat Madalyn hosts each week is presented by ManageFlitter. They've created an ebook based on the Twitter Chat. They collaborated with 25 social media and digital marketing experts to cover 25 topics. Using Webinars to Activate an Influencer's Community Work with an influencer to create a content-rich webinar for a win-win. This works well for affiliate partnerships. For Madalyn's Video Like A Rockstar mastermind program she is doing webinars to promote it. A great way to do this is to connect with influencers and invite them to be a guest on your webinar. You can also have them as an affiliate too. Using Facebook Live to Build Community Kami uses this every month for Social Media Breakfast and it builds a community beyond the live event. Facebook Live allows more people to attend online than at the live event. Madalyn hosts Facebook Live sessions after her TwitterSmarter Chat and Social ROI every week. It's a great way of opening it up to a wider audience and bringing communities together. Social Media Examiner does a weekly talk show through lilive streamThrough the talk show and podcasts, they highlight thought leaders and guests who usually become speakers for their annual conference, SMMW. They provide speakers with a link for the conference to track who they bring along. Inviting Influencers to Appear On Your Platform Invite people that have communities that match your potential customers to appear on your podcast or YouTube channel and they might share it with their audience as well. Huffington Post has named Madalyn one of 50 Women Entrepreneurs to follow. Most passionate about I’ve been doing digital marketing for the last 22 years, and social media as a business for the last 13 years. I was named as the Number 1 social media marketer in Huston, which is where I live and the 4th largest city in the US. I have two podcasts and two Twitter Chats that I host. I’m doing a lot, but it’s all in the world of social media, especially Twitter; I love helping people understand how to best use Twitter. I enjoy podcasting so much, so I really would like that to be a bigger priority in my business world in the future. I also really love online teaching, so right now I’m creating a whole library of online courses. The last project I’m really passionate about today is a Master Mind group I create for female entrepreneurs that want to learn how to live stream. Madalyn’s customers These days my customers are typically social media marketers. Many of them are learning the business and look up to me as an online mentor, teaching them how to use social media and Twitter. I had been in the music business for close to 20 years. I loved that, but I wanted to do something different. I was watching the Mari Smiths and Kim Garsts for years, these successful ladies from the social media world. And I wanted to be known as someone who could help people with social media and especially with Twitter. And I decided to niche down on Twitter. We really need a niche, because when you try to serve everyone, you end up serving no one! Focusing on Twitter was the smartest decision I made. Madalyn’s best advice about approaching customers What’s really important is to listen. You got to listen to your customers and find out what they want. That’s what happened to me with the Women Master Mind group I’m creating these days, as a result women telling me over and over what they need and want. Biggest failure with a customer Very early on in my startup career. I’m an idea person. I come out with ideas all the time. Some work and some don’t. Back when my son was very young and I wanted the ability to be able to see how my son is doing through out the day using web cameras. I came out with a business plan, and got a loan and I did everything and it failed because I did not research enough. It came out that the ladies in the day care centers didn’t want it. I’ve got to admit that it was good that I failed in such an early stage of my business. Biggest success due to the right customer approach One of the things I’m most proud of is an online community I started in 1996! The Internet was just started and I started a female musician community with the vision to empower these women. It was a really cool thing. Everything I’ve done was born from an idea. This story is a reminder for me to follow your passions. When I started all this, I had no idea I will be an entrepreneur. Recommendation of a tool for customer focus, marketing, or sales? Evernote – For me, it’s like a file coming from my brain. I’m really big with post-it notes. They are all over. I must write every idea that comes to my mind A person who...

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Are you struggling with generating new business and grow your digital agency? In this episode of The Smart Agency Master Class, I talk with Michael Gass who is going to share with us his steps for driving new agency business. Positioning is the foundation of generating ad agency new business. Historically, agencies have problems when it comes to generating new business. There's little differentiation; every agency sounds just like the next. It's like you're forgetting your marketing minds when it comes to promoting your agency. Think having great creative makes you different from the next guy? Michael doesn't. “Great creative isn't a point of differentiation, it's an expectation.” If you really want to stand apart you need to narrow your focus - find that niche - and give the prospects a reason to want to work with you. Stop being your own worst client and making it harder than it should be! The paradigm shift. Let's face it - it just isn't how it used to be. Many agency founders, who were once great at working a room are finding themselves pretty inept nowadays. But Michael points out that we don't need to be mourning the days of chasing new business. He suggests using technology to entice new business to come to you. Don't worry if you have been slow to start using social media, you're not alone. Most agencies didn't start using it until 2010, and then they just did the same thing they were doing in the real world - talking about themselves. “Credentials, capabilities, and case studies - no one cares.” Prospects are looking for resources, not portfolios. 7 steps to differentiation and driving new business to your agency. #1 - Identify a target audience. Remember, you want to work with people who fit in that sweet spot. Once you find the target audience, set a clear objective. #2 - Find your purpose. Think about what your content driven blog is providing. Make sure that you're keeping your focus narrow. If you try to be everything to everybody, you won't appeal to anyone. #3 - Develop content! Michael gives his clients a 30 post in 30 days challenge. Do that and you'll have a lot of content and a routine for future production. Also, make sure you're leading with the benefit statement (i.e. put the most important information at the top to hook your readers). #4 - Include a clear call to action. Give your readers a prompt to keep the conversation going. #5 - Implement best practices. Keep what works and dump what doesn't. #6 - Make use of your analytics to refine and improve your content. You can learn a lot by just looking at the data, so if you're not currently checking your analytics, you're missing out. #7 - Manage the process. Use automation or hire someone to be responsible for making sure posts happen. Even if you're busy with pitches or away at a conference, someone should be in charge of putting out content. What you can do right now to start generating new business for your agency? Michael is a huge fan of social media and is adamant that we get comfortable using it. Tweet a lot, post on Google+, Facebook and LinkedIn. Write blog posts. Share, share, share. Start building a community. Use social media to promote your blog and share your posts. You can also share posts by others that you think are relevant and interesting. For help building that community, try ManageFlitter. Sound daunting? Michael suggests using Basecamp, a project management tool. Michael calls it “the ultimate cat herding program." Discover the best Digital Agency Strategies today. Covered in this episode: There’s no amount of sophisticated technology that will take the place of live in person connecting. - @MariSmithClick To Tweet “I think the part that becomes a detriment is when we use the technology for a replacement for connecting in person, as a replacement social life, as a fix, as pseudo connection. I struggle with this almost on a daily basis. I literally have to make myself get off the computer, off the phone. When I go out with friends or I’m in a social environment or in a business setting, I try to really just be mindful and not bury myself in my technology and put it away and connect with people in front of me.” -Mari Smith Simple Social Media Strategy: Content Creation, Engagement, Conversion Manageflitter.com Scoreboardsocial.com Tweet Mari Smith to let her know you appreciated her sharing on this episode!
