And I wanted to be known as someone who could help people with social media and especially with Twitter. And I decided to niche down on Twitter. We really need a niche, because when you try to serve everyone, you end up serving no one! Focusing on Twitter was the smartest decision I made. Madalyn’s best advice about approaching customers What’s really important is to listen. You got to listen to your customers and find out what they want. That’s what happened to me with the Women Master Mind group I’m creating these days, as a result women telling me over and over what they need and want. Biggest failure with a customer Very early on in my startup career. I’m an idea person. I come out with ideas all the time. Some work and some don’t. Back when my son was very young and I wanted the ability to be able to see how my son is doing through out the day using web cameras. I came out with a business plan, and got a loan and I did everything and it failed because I did not research enough. It came out that the ladies in the day care centers didn’t want it. I’ve got to admit that it was good that I failed in such an early stage of my business. Biggest success due to the right customer approach One of the things I’m most proud of is an online community I started in 1996! The Internet was just started and I started a female musician community with the vision to empower these women. It was a really cool thing. Everything I’ve done was born from an idea. Ask your community what they want before you create things. Work on the offer that’s attractive to your community, something they really need and want. Create a Challenge Contest You can get people to act in a short period of time and get results. Madalyn discusses her experience taking part in Facebook challenges where the leader brings everyone together in a live discussion on the Facebook page and how it’s beneficial in making her feel like a part of the community. Live Streaming Congregate your community in one place using Twitter, Facebook live streams or Periscope, to get your community talking to one another. Madalyn hosts live streams after her #SocialROI and #TwitterSmarter Twitter chats. After the chat is over, she discusses the topic in more detail with a guest over the livestream. Kami highlights that moving a community to a live stream brings people together in a more intimate setting where they can more closely connect.  Create a Leaderboard Kami discusses how she uses Grytics to create a group leaderboard and reward people for their participation. Leaderboards are a form of gamification, encouraging your community to connect. It also serves as a reward for the people that are active in the group. Social Media Marketing World conference uses a leaderboard based on the use of their official event hashtag. Madalyn talks about her experience at last year’s conference being in the top 10 of their leaderboard and how it gave her a sense of validation in her career.  Hot-seat coaching Feature someone in your community to the rest of the community and then outline how they also can be featured. Use live video so your community can interact and ask them questions. Others can learn a lot from the interaction between you and a hot-seat coaching participant. Mastermind groups have hot-seat sessions to present issues and problems and the community will help by presenting ideas and opinions. Pat Flynn has a podcast called Ask Pat, where he answers questions from the community. To celebrate hitting 1,000 podcast episodes, he plans to do impromptu Q&A sessions in live coaching sessions in his Facebook group. Kami discusses a class a class she’s taking called The Experience Product Mastermind. She discussed a hot seat session she witnessed, and how everyone listening worked together to help come up with a name for the company of the student. In this brief, solo episode (yeah, it’s just me) I share my thoughts on the new expanded tweets. It’s an excerpt from my recent post, What Will Happen To Twitter’s Brevity With Expanded Tweet Count? I’d love to know your thoughts about this big change to Twitter. Feel free to comment at the bottom of the page. It’s official. Twitter has expanded its character length from 140 to 280 characters. They did a test launch back in September that received a lot of criticism because let’s face it, 140 characters is what made Twitter, Twitter. Many users argued that increasing the tweet size would make Twitter less readable as longer tweets filled up the feeds. And as I mentioned in a previous blog post, Twitter does not need to become another Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram. Twitter Releases 280 Twitter decided to go ahead and roll out longer tweets on November 7. They did this everywhere except for those using Japanese, Korean and Chinese, because character length is not an issue for those languages. Twitter says it’s easier to tweet when given more space. And that with more room to tweet, there’s room for higher engagement, more followers and more time spent on the platform. That remains to be seen. My Take on the 280 I was granted access to Twitter’s new update right in the middle of the #SocialROI chat that I host every Tuesday at 5pm ET. I watched some participants post tweets that were definitely longer. I didn’t like it. It seems odd and out of place. Especially during a fast-paced chat. It’s hard enough to keep up, but now trying to wade through longer tweets would become nightmare. Luckily only a few people tried longer form tweets during that chat. Later that evening, I experimented. I tried a few longer tweets. At first it seemed weird. But what was even weirder is that Twitter does not give you the number of character spaces at the onset. As a matter of fact, you don’t know how many characters you’ve tweeted until you come upon the last 20 out of 280 characters. I found myself easily typing up longer tweets. Was this a ploy to get us to write out longer thoughts? Hmm, I wondered.  Accepting the 280 So it didn’t take long. A few nights ago I was busy prepping and promoting the #TwitterSmarter chat that I host every Thursday at 1pm ET. I came up with a really great tweet. I got creative with the space. It’s more compelling and attention grabbing.  What Will Happen To Brevity? Twitter’s best asset is its brevity. Sharing concise information is what drew me to Twitter, as I’m sure most of you. But I can also see beyond the 140 and that this change is not so bad after all. There will be times where we need that extra character space, or two or ten. But I am worried about spammers being more spammy. And Twitter chats being difficult to wade through. Twitter says that the excitement should wear off soon and people will go back to the concise. It will be interesting to see what happens. What Does This Mean For You? More space which gives you room to be creative. You can now share an expanded thought on Twitter and go far beyond what you were used to with just 140 characters. Many are on the fence about this new move, as I was. But as I spent more time experimenting, I realized there will be times where some extra space will come in handy. My Twitter Poll Says… I posted a Twitter poll to get an idea as to what people in my community thought about this major change. In just 24 hours, I received 566 votes! How to get started on Twitter “I think the biggest thing with Twitter is people get on there and think, ‘let me just post up and let me just push out and push out.’ But by doing that, you don’t get a whole lot in return. It’s about engaging, it’s about chatting with people, having a discussion and through that, then they’ll check out your Twitter profile, then they’ll look at your post, then they’ll start liking and commenting and having a conversation about it. Just posting purely as just the way you’re utilizing your Twitter is not really enough to make an impact.” #Listen: Create Twitter Lists There are two ways to go about it. Number one, you just want to go and listen. Go to Twitter profiles of people in your business, people in your industry that you like and follow them. I would recommend making a Twitter list of all the top industry people that you look up to. If you put them in a list, you can keep track of them. That means, if you go to your home stream you’ll see the posts of everyone you follow. I like to reciprocate and follow people. Not everybody, but I like to go look at their profile and if they’re somebody worthy of following, they’re active, they’re not spammers, I feel like this is a good connection then I will follow back. But then it becomes this dilemma like, okay, now my home screen is just going to be that much more full. So I create this Twitter list so that I can see all the top social media marketers and know what they’re tweeting. I just go to this one list and they’re all there. So the first thing is listening; listen to what people are talking about, organize with Twitter lists because they’ll make it so much easier. #TwitterChats I think Twitter chat is a great way to really get going with Twitter. We’ll use my #TwitterSmarter chat as an example. Just imagine for one hour, a whole bunch of like-minded people coming together on Twitter, they’re all at this hashtag and having great conversation, and you could be part of that. I run a chat called #TwitterSmarter, I’ve been running it for the last two years. Just like my podcast, it’s sharing Twitter tips. Every Thursday at one o’clock Eastern, you come on and you can just chat with other people about Twitter. I have a guest every week with a topic and we have a Q&A, but I invite the community that comes to the chat to come partake and be a part of the conversation. It’s not just for the experts, so if you feel like you have something to contribute, by all means, come and share your two cents with each question. What’s interesting for all the newbies out there is they feel like they’re gaining education. They come on and they watch and they tell me they take pages and pages of notes.
