Welcome to Episode 178 where we look at just how you can build or continue to work on gaining your INNER strength so you can have a confident, strong voice on the OUTSIDE. In this episode we discuss how in order to feel strong enough on the outside, we might first need to do some work on the inside to build our confidence around the things that are private and personal. We get into what it means to work on building a strong inner core of self-trust, healthy boundaries and standing in your truth with emotional honesty. Being assertive can be risky business, or at least feel that way at first, and ironically it requires a lot of courage to be this vulnerable. This inner muscle work will certainly pay off over time as our insides match our outsides more. Key Elements: Discuss healthy vs unhealthy ways to get needs met and deal with feelings. Look at how boundaries play a big part in self-confidence. Explore how allowing ourselves to do some healthy accepting of reality keeps us grounded and strong. “If you want to improve your self-worth, stop giving other people the calculator.” – Tim Fargo Resources: Make sure you sign up for the bonus downloads at www.ownitpowercast.com. Tim Fargo When we get feedback on something, we shouldn't dwell on it. The idea is that if you made a mistake in the past, you should learn from it and once you get the lesson down, discard it as fast possible so it doesn't weigh you down as a person. If we store and keep it as a part of ourselves, then that mistake is going to hold us back. If you had one bad mistake with one person, don't assume everyone is a bad person. If that happens, examine how things didn't work out and learn how to do better the next time around. Holding on to your mistakes will keep you from pursuing your goals because you will second guess yourself and not go forward with the plan. It wastes time and time is something we can never get back again. So if you want to take it to the next level with your life, just follow today's quote and you'll start moving the ball in the right direction and will start to see some great things in your life. Journal Prompts How will not storing your mistakes help you live a better life? How can you let go of your mistakes by examining them and learning from them?

This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Evan Ruggiero reminds us through his cancer batter that rising up even when half of your world vanishes is possible. Amy Schuber taught us that you are the inspiration you seek. Ryan Caligiuri shared his mantra that there are no set backs, only set ups for what's next. One of my favorite artists, MC YOGI, talked about how all things grow in darkness Anne Sugar shared her battle with cancer as a way to see how you can trust your body even when it betrays you. Chris Wirth hit on his message of never quitting on living the life you deserve. David Ralph reminded us about the power in our lives if we connect the dots. Claude Silver shared her story (for the first time) of why she is who she is today and how that's showed her the importance of Heart in leadership. Elizabeth McCourt talked about the empowerment we can take from building our own resilience. Josh LaJaunie shared his story of overcoming extreme obesity--not just for himself, but for the world around him. Michael Nulty talked about his multiple suicide attempts and how he found rebirth out of depression. Mark Metry shared the importance of taking responsibility for your life and what you can achieve as a new person. My good friend, Aaron Keith Hawkins, talked about how we need to have influence over ourselves if we want to influence anyone else. Kelsey Abbott helped us Find Our Awesome through self-confidence and curiosity. She also gave me a quote I've used almost daily, "What you I say is about me. What you hear is about you." Dorie Clark reminds us of the important of perseverance and consistency if we want to achieve our greatest goals. Sonya Looney, world female mountain bike endurance champion, was just awesome, but had a key message around vulnerability and honesty with ourselves. She also gave me another gem of an idea around being stuck. Rather than being negative about the feeling, she recognizes it's a sign of something big being about to happen. Tim Fargo talked about the humility and balance we can find in unexpected places like failure. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Jen Arnold shared her story around food and her weight and how that inspired her to change how we look at wellness and knowing ourselves. Lee Havern shared how he overcome depression and recognized the interconnectedness between mental and physical wellness. Emmitt Muckles left us charged up and recognizing that prosperity has nothing to do with money. Terri Levine, who lives in extreme, debilitating pain, showed how you can still find power and heart and use that to create something. Leigh Martinuzzi talked about finding his hidden Why and what that can unlock. The great Dick Vitale shared a power packed message of inspiration and making the choice to get up and move forward no matter what hits you, as he's done throughout his life. Season 2 Steve Gordon showed how falling down may be necessary to reach new heights Robb Holman talked about the power of letting go so we can find meaning and purpose Lindsey Heiserman inspired us to not let our past stories be part of our right now Charise Colbert shared her journey coming out of domestic abuse Sara Quiriconi talked to us about how to live free of all the cancers in our life Syd Finkelstein on how to be a Super Boss leader Ariana Robinson Danquah shared how to rise up when you're stuck in the middle Jon DeWaal gripped us with his story of falling off a roof and how that helped him see how to get through life's toughest transitions John Zeratsky talked about what he discovered to achieve the most, and it has nothing to do with productivity Josh Perry taught the power of gratitude even in the face of life's greatest challenges if you want to come through them thriving Mark Crandall shared his trauma story to help us see how facing our trauma's allows for growth Adam Schaeuble got us all fired up, and he also inspired with his approach to reimagining your life – and making it come true Sandy Vo talked about her journey to find clarity and peace despite a foundation of turmoil Cornell Thomas is the epitome of the "What's Next?" attitude winning over the "Why Me?" mentality Sandra Younger taught us her Come Back approach to be a victor, not a victim of tragedy Jenn Swanson talked about her journey off loss, gratitude and realization that you are your best investment Howard Jacobson shared how losing his father inspired his mission to fight diseases of ignorance with the wisdom of lifestyle Brooke Siem retold her amazing journey navigating her way out of a life of medication for mental illness into a life of discovery Tanur Badgley showed how to become a person of purpose through his journey starting with a fall off the side of a mountain Gary Bertwistle talked about the power of authenticity and discovering your mojo Frank King went into how thoughts of suicide taught him to go after what he really wanted, and why so many people need support as they face moments that lead them to these thoughts Mary Shores talked about the power of serving others as she went from dented to thriving Nick Elvery shared his journey from addiction to peak performance and what sparked the change Jaime Jay got vulnerable as he retold his story of multiple experiences with homelessness to being in a place of gratitude and contentment Dai Manuel talked about the importance of living as you need to, from your own perspective Blaire Palmer showed how the greatest thing we can bet on is ourselves Season 3 Dov Baron forced us to look at what's really going on, magnifying it, and then using that insight to truly grow Episode 056. This show is the last of season 2 and today I will encourage you yet again to take control of your life and work and dreams and ambitions by adopting the productivity techniques that I have talked about here on this podcast. Call it a motivational talk if you will, but by recapping on some of the key techniques I have introduced here, I will show you how you can gain back control of your life and take positive action to move forward. As usual, I will do a quick recap on last week’s episode before moving on to the main subject and that show simply recommended 5 more awesome and mostly free apps which are useful for improving your productivity. One thing I have discovered since releasing it is that Apple no longer has the Call Recorder app I recommended in their store, but I have linked in last week’s show notes to several similar apps in order to cover this. Sadly it does seem that Apple is charging for a number of apps that you get for free on Android but I guess that’s the way they roll. If you missed the episode then please go back and check it out as there are some awesome apps in there that will make your life a hell of a lot easier. I’ve wasted too much time on apps that are supposedly good for productivity but have turned out to be not much use in the long run. What I can guarantee is - if you adopt and utilise any of my suggestions, and it’s worth noting is that they are largely free to download and use, that you will thank me later. Can I just add that if you would like to recommend your own favourite apps for productivity for inclusion in a future episode then please get in touch as I’d really appreciate your input on this topic. THE LESSON Kenneth Branagh’s definition of success, he says, is CONTROL. This doesn’t mean that he’s a control freak - it just means that he wants to be driving the bus. In his career, in his personal life, in whatever he does. I believe that if you don’t actively take control by assuming a level of higher level thinking as I talked about in episode 1, then the chances of you getting where you want to go in your life, or in your career will be near zero. Getting yourself to a place where you are in CONTROL is the basis of this episode. It’s all too easy to get yourself into a state of mind where you feel trapped. Where you feel like you are missing out on your dreams or your goals and ultimately in your happiness because of a decision - or a series of decisions you had made along the way. Those decisions, oftentimes made out of necessity, which were the correct things to do at the time, might ultimately leave you with a feeling of dissatisfaction or indeed, downright unhappiness with where you are now in your life or your career. You may feel that although you are successful and happy in one area of your life and work that you have lost control or direction in another. I’ve called today’s show YOU HAVE THE POWER, but I was very close to calling it SAVE YOURSELF. You see buried under the weight of the day to day distractions, commitments, fears and anxieties that you find yourself sometimes lost or trapped within, it really is only you and ONLY YOU that has the power to get yourself out of trouble and back on track. My feeling is that unless you actively work to defeat these distractions and negative emotions that they will drag you down. They smother your hopes and dreams and cling to your time and your mental energy like barnacles – You have to take the hammer and chisel that the productivity techniques I talk about here offer you, and chip away these problems, one at a time. Once you start to do that you will soon get back control and create the ability to steer things in a direction of your choosing. Motivational writer and philosopher Steven Redhead says that you must “Start living by taking back the control of your life now! Create a life more in tune with your true desires.” There are a few parts to that statement I want to reiterate. The START LIVING part is essential – When you start to consider the larger picture, everything that follows will be driven by what you learn from it, and that can only happen if it goes hand in hand with the second essential part - CREATING A LIFE WHICH IS IN TUNE WITH YOUR DESIRES and I would add your VALUES. If you are unhappy, stressed, frustrated or simply lost, then you may feel that the life or career you’d hoped for is slipping away or is already so far out of reach that you have given up. You must remember though that stress and worry over your problems, depletes your energy reserves, solves nothing and actually blocks you from thinking about solutions. In the very first episode of the podcast I said that you should begin to work ON your life and career at the same time that you find yourself living and working IN it - and to do this you needed to develop that HIGHER LEVEL OF THINKING I mentioned a minute ago. I believe that we all have the power to take control, to a degree at least, over our lives but that it is only possible if we engage our minds in strategizing how to do it. Author of ALPHABET SUCCESS Tim Fargo said that “Who you are tomorrow begins with what you do today.” and that “If you want to get ahead you must slow down and focus”. Fargo’s advice to “slow down and focus” is the key to getting back control. Look back to my episode on KILLING THE MICROWAVE MINDSET for more advice on slowing down btw. With well thought out, focused strategies we can create long term plans to achieve what we seek in life. Author Steve Maraboli says “Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don't.” Now productivity encapsulates a large degree of positivity, but sometimes I have to offer advice that is more of a REALITY SLAP than a positive affirmation of what you would like to hear. After I made my feature film, which was distributed by Cineworld and had some success, I was told by the main Scottish film funding organisation, that they would not fund my project development because someone else already had their backing and as someone new to the game there was simply nothing for me. They actually told me that they would NEVER fund me which was quite aggravating, but it was a REALITY which at least they were honest about. The reality slap I ask you to accept is that there is such a thing as SUPPLY and DEMAND. Everyone, right off the bat - can’t be the Director, or the Cinematographer, or the Writer, Designer, Lead Actor or Actress as these are limited positions. Some roles have tons of demand, while others have very limited demand. I don’t mean don’t aspire to that role, just don’t be shocked if the job isn’t there for you when you go looking for it and don’t be shocked if you have to be a camera assistant for a few years before the first opportunity comes along for you to be the DP. Remember that nobody owes you anything. Just because you want a position doesn’t mean someone is required to give you a job. You must demonstrate you can create value for people, or else they’ll find another person to get things done. Creating value means learning things other people don’t know btw. It means doing things other people aren’t willing to do. It sometimes means working for free to demonstrate you’re capable of performing. It means taking on tasks no one else wants and turning them into something better. It means working harder than everyone else. It means demonstrating you’re worth keeping around and worth paying for. And I want to just hammer this one home a bit further with this quote from Gary Vaynerchuk - “A penguin cannot become a giraffe, so just be the best penguin that you can be.” And one more by Charles T. Munger – He said “To get what you want, you have to deserve what you want. The world is not yet a crazy enough place to reward a whole bunch of undeserving people.” I wanted to make that point as there’s a fine line between confidence and delusion – and it’s important you recognise this. If you are getting hot and bothered about getting nowhere fast in your life or career, then persistence and patience maybe useful allies on your journey. If you’ve listened to this podcast for a while you’ll already have the productivity techniques at hand to help you clear the space in your life, your work, your time and your energy to take a breather for a wee while, make a plan and get yourself moving again… this time - in a direction of your choosing. I’m referring to the earlier Tim Fargo quote of course - “If you want to get ahead you must slow down and focus”. I’ve just spent 6 weeks (amongst other things it’s fair to say) writing, producing and hosting this podcast for which I receive no payment whatsoever but I’ve CHOSEN to do this and with that choice comes satisfaction. By assuming a position of Higher Level Thinking I realised that I at certain points in the year I can now afford to work on my own creative projects, this being one of them. I accepted that I don’t have full control over my year. That I can work on other cool and interesting projects with cool and interesting creative people during the larger part of the year to earn money and pay bills, but in the quieter parts of the year I have a tremendous opportunity to advance my own creative endeavours when my work is quiet. I am not sitting on a pile of cash here, but to a large degree at least I am in control of my own life and work. I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer to this question but I’d like you to ask yourself - WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU? It’s something you simply must consider if you genuinely want to take control and move forward. WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE? I can’t help thinking of Simon Synek’s book FIND YOUR WHY when I talk about this SO perhaps you should also ask yourself WHY YOU WANT WHAT YOU WANT? If you know what you are trying to achieve, and why you want to achieve it, then you will be able to determine what success will mean to you. Making these decisions will mean that you can focus on what really matters. Peter Drucker says “Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient that which should not be done in the first place.”, and what we are getting down to here is what I talked about in episode 3. That to give yourself the best possible chance of success, you need to PRIORITIZE WHAT IS IMPORTANT OVER WHAT IS NOT. Considering, as I said before, WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL AND WHAT YOU CANNOT will also save you a lot of wasted time and effort. Do you understand? I could go into a number of other factors here, but that’s what the full podcast episodes are for. A contender for chief amongst the lessons here is that - you must look out for toxic people who will get their claws into your time and energy and ensure that your own dreams always come SECOND. Listen to Episode 24 for advice on that one, or Episode 18 for advice on protecting your mental energy as that’s way up there in importance too, but I’m going right back to episode 2 to give you the final piece of advice on gaining control… You have to - have to - HAVE TO – Learn to say NO. Zig Ziglar says “The first step to getting what you want is to have the courage to get rid of what you don’t.” I’ve written a note on my board for season 3 to do an episode on PEOPLE PLEASING which is a big problem for some of us, and it ’s likely a huge problem for you if you have trouble saying NO to people. Here’s the thing though. Unless you can find the strength within you to start saying NO to things that do not further your own dreams or goals in some way, then you will forever be putting your own dreams and goals second or third or tenth in line to someone else’s and you will NEVER gain control of your own life, or work or creative endeavours. Go right back to episode 2 and have a listen, it’s one of my earlier ones so forgive me if it’s less polished but check it out and take note as YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST LEARN TO SAY NO - you must get over this in built need to people please as the cost is too high. STOP WORRYING ABOUT UPSETTING PEOPLE – If they do get upset because you say NO is that someone you even want in your life anyway? Your life won’t fall apart because you’ve prioritised your own things over theirs. STOP FEELING GUILTY – Why is saying NO to someone causing you this guilt? Saying NO to someone isn’t a moral issue. Saying NO to someone isn’t doing anything wrong – so why feel guilty about it? The fact is that saying NO is doing something right for you, and in the long run saving you stress through overwhelm of over commitment. Stella Adler has a quote for actors which I think I can hijack for general use on this point. She said – “You need a kind of aggression, a kind of inner force. Don't be only one-sided, sweet, nice, good. Get rid of being average. Find the killer in you.” Maybe you need a bit of that killer instinct to get what you want too. James Doohan, who played Scotty in Star Trek served as a captain in the Canadian Forces and led men into battle on D-Day, said later in life that he didn’t want control, he just wanted to be told what to do. He said he’s spent his military years ordering people about and when that career ended he just wanted to be the best actor he could be. At a glance that may seem that he didn’t want control but he made his decisions along the way, became the best actor he could be and he was happy. Remember that to be in control you don’t have to be the boss. “You can influence, direct and control your own environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.” Napoleon Hill, unquote. CALL TO ACTION As this is the last episode of the series, their likely won’t be any more than the odd inbetweenisode for about 3 months, so I think that’s plenty of time for me to give you a major Call To Action. If you want to gain control over your life, or your career, or your training, or your creative projects, or free time, or whatever you set your mind to then take the steps I have discussed and that I list here now to do so. Remember too to write all it down as when you take that action it greatly increases the odds of your succeeding in your endeavour. DECIDE ON WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO YOU. Decide what you are trying to achieve. SAY NO TO ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T FURTHER YOUR DREAMS, GOALS AND AMBITIONS. This will find you time you thought you never had. PRIORITISE WHAT IS IMPORTANT OVER WHAT IS NOT. MAKE A PLAN. Write it down and stick to it. Slow down. PLAY THE LONG GAME. And 5 – BE CONFIDENT BUT NOT DELUSIONAL. If you follow these steps and you will gain control, slowly but surely over your life. Take control and make your life happy. ENDING Internationally renowned psychologist Irene Kassorla said, “The pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand.” So if you feel trapped, restricted or cornered in some way don’t worry. This too shall pass. Take the steps I suggest to gain back control. You’re going to be ok. Everything is going to be alright. Thanks once again for taking the time to join me on this season. I hope it’s been beneficial and enjoyable for you to do so. I’ll take this opportunity to recommend a few filmmaking podcasts which you may find of interest. Check out Alex Ferrari’s awesome, Indie Film Hustle, Ian O’Neill’s How They Did It Filmmaking podcast, The Filmmakers Podcast which has a number of presenters, but I’ll give a shout out to Giles Alderson as he’s a great supporter of this show, and finally the very first podcast I listened to, the brilliant, Dave Bullis Podcast as I’ve been looking for an opportunity to plug it all season and it’s a great show. Next season I’m considering splitting the show with a new format of 6 interviews with productivity authors and 6 solo shows, but you’ll just have to wait and see what happens. It will come around in approximately 3 months and if you’re very lucky you will get a bonus inbetweenisode or two in the break. Please follow the show on Facebook @filmproproductivity or on twitter @filmproprodpod if you’d like to stay up to date with what’s going on. I also have personal accounts on Instagram and twitter @fight_director Now, take control of your own destiny, keep on shootin’ and join me next season on Film Pro Productivity. This past month we have been exploring how to build a successful online community and scale it to grow and support your nonprofit cause or your online or offline business. This episode is a wrap up to these recent, can't miss, episodes: Episode 65: How to Promote Your Community Episode 66: Why Niche Communities Work Better Episode 67: Launching a Community When You are Brand New Episode 68: Strategies for Staying Connected Through Social Media with Tyler J McCall and this one, Episode 69: 5 Steps for Building a Successful Online Community Today, we are going to talk about the five steps you can take to build a successful online community, including how to define your ideal members, ask questions, create content they want, choose a platform and engage and grow your community. Step 1: Define your ideal online community member Use social listening to hear what your ideal community member or customer is saying about their problems. Even if you don’t have a community of your own yet, join similar communities who have your ideal customer in them and observe what people in that community are saying about their challenges and desires. Think of products that you can offer all along the growth path of your ideal customer by solving a current problem, then solve the next level problem, and so on. Create a ladder of products for your customers to climb to your higher level products. Ask yourself what your life’s purpose is and who it is you are here to serve. Don’t waste your time on things that fall outside of that purpose. Step 2: Ask your online community lots of questions Ask questions within a group. Go all-in to find out exactly what your audience is looking for and then test your solutions to that problem to gauge interest. Talk to people one on one. Reach out via DM, email or phone. Don’t sell them anything, just ask them questions to learn how they describe their challenges and concerns as it pertains to the topic of your expertise. Take note of the language they use. Utilize polls and surveys. Use Twitter and Facebook to ask the community questions that help you gain a better understanding of them and know their wants and needs. Step 3: Create content that answers your online community’s questions Create content that directly answers a single question. This is great for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and also lets you see which content strikes a note with your community before you build it out into something bigger. Create content that teaches instead of teases. Step 4: Choose a platform where you will engage your online community most often Find out where your ideal online audience is hanging out the most: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Snapchat or somewhere else? (You can get some demographic statistics on this chart from Spredfast) Focus on that platform and build out an online community around the topic of your business, organization or expertise. Step 5: Engage and grow your online community Create a plan for engagement. It doesn’t happen unless you plan for it. Have a private group or page to interact and engage with your community. Promote your group to grow your community. Here are some of the best ways to promote your online community. You have a lot to offer them, but you can’t make the impact you want to make unless you grow your community. In this episode, we shared the best ways we have found to grow your online community. 1. Smart sharing on your social media channels In Episode 46, we interviewed Tim Fargo from Social Jukebox and we talked about evergreen sharing. Having evergreen content on social media really works and Social Jukebox does an amazing job. Start using livestream on your social media platforms to deliver valuable content. It’s a great way to get your content in front of people. Change your profile link (especially in Instagram) for whatever you’re promoting or launching. 2. Create bonus content This gives people a taste of what you’re offering and also helps to grow your email list. Email and chatbots can be helpful in delivering content to people who are interested in it. We have an episode about how to use Chatbots effectively from the founder of ManyChat. 3. Nurture the people already on your email list Todd Giannattasio from The Growth Suite was on Episode 55 talking about building a funnel to grow your community. There’s a lot to learn from him in how grow and nurture your email list. Bundle your content thematically and share them in your drip email sequences to warm up your list and add value. 4. Use testimonials to show value Social proof is incredibly important because people want to see how you got results that they relate to. We talked about this in Episode 48. We went in depth about how to get and use testimonials. Create a Twitter Moment “buzz from others” when other people say something good about you. This is a great way to showcase testimonials and also let the other person know you find their feedback as valuable. There’s nothing better than people saying nice things about you or your services. Madalyn’s process is to ask to use someone’s comment as a testimonial. Screenshots are a smart way to establish social proof in your community. Just be sure to get permission from the testimonial author. In this episode, we focus on working with influencer communities to build your brand by using collaborations, workshops, Facebook Live and even your own platforms. Back in Episode 19, we went into depth about How to Build Your Community Using Joint Venture Partnerships. We recommend that you listen to that episode as a companion to this one Building Community Collaborations Lee Odden from TopRank Marketing often works with trade shows and associations to create ebooks for download before a conference. He collaborates with tradeshow attendees who download the ebooks and share it with their companies and friends. He also creates lists every year, starting with the list 25 Women That Rock Social Media. Every year, he asks those featured for their recommendations for the next list. He has done this very successfully for a number of years. The #SocialROI Chat Madalyn hosts each week is presented by ManageFlitter. They've created an ebook based on the Twitter Chat. They collaborated with 25 social media and digital marketing experts to cover 25 topics. Using Webinars to Activate an Influencer's Community Work with an influencer to create a content-rich webinar for a win-win. This works well for affiliate partnerships. For Madalyn's Video Like A Rockstar mastermind program she is doing webinars to promote it. A great way to do this is to connect with influencers and invite them to be a guest on your webinar. You can also have them as an affiliate too. Using Facebook Live to Build Community Kami uses this every month for Social Media Breakfast and it builds a community beyond the live event. Facebook Live allows more people to attend online than at the live event. Madalyn hosts Facebook Live sessions after her TwitterSmarter Chat and Social ROI every week. It's a great way of opening it up to a wider audience and bringing communities together. Social Media Examiner does a weekly talk show through lilive streamThrough the talk show and podcasts, they highlight thought leaders and guests who usually become speakers for their annual conference, SMMW. They provide speakers with a link for the conference to track who they bring along. Inviting Influencers to Appear On Your Platform Invite people that have communities that match your potential customers to appear on your podcast or YouTube channel and they might share it with their audience as well. Plus, you get some social proof from it as well. Business Owner's Freedom Formula | Actionable Advice for Small Business Owners
In 2013, Tim Fargo wanted to promote his new book, Alphabet Success. Using Twitter, he quickly realized his evergreen content scheduling was a time-suck. He thought there had to be a better way. Reaching out to a colleague to build what he needed, Tim quickly had a solution to his problem of automating posts in a deliberate manner. Now, Social Jukebox serves hundreds companies from micro businesses with no staff to personal brands to major companies. Tim understands what it takes to launch a business. His first major success with Omega, an investigation company, started in an extra bedroom. Tim led the company through growth to over 300 employees in just a few years, selling it off for $20 million. Now he’s helping others reach larger audiences through social media marketing automation with his company Social Jukebox. In my interview with Tim, he shares all sorts of valuable business tips based on his massive success, including, why most big ideas suck!
We tend to believe that leaders have all the answers. But the truth is, real leadership is about a willingness to reach out to people with a wide range of knowledge and expertise, solicit feedback, and take the responses to heart. Tim Fargo is an American entrepreneur, author and angel investor. He was the founder and CEO of Omega Insurance Services, a business he sold in 2003 for $20M. In 2013, Tim was using social media to market his book, Alphabet Success, and getting increasingly frustrated with the time it took to schedule evergreen posts. He asked friend and colleague Len Sixt to develop an app for his personal use, and that tool eventually became Tim’s current business, the popular automated social media posting system known as Social Jukebox. Tim sits down with Emerald to explain why you should avoid chasing an ideal and set goals that work for you. He speaks to his decision to walk away from a $20M business, discussing how the company’s growth and advice from peers informed his choices. Tim walks us through the inception of Social Jukebox, describing how his own frustration with posting consistently to promote his book led to the creation of the tool. Listen in for Tim’s insight on creating a support system of people who possess a wide range of knowledge and learn why true leaders seek out feedback—and really listen! If you wonder how to promote your evergreen content efficiently, you might want to check out Social Jukebox, a tool that allows you to share your content over and over again on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. In this episode, we talk with Tim Fargo from Social Jukebox. He is a two-time Inc. 500 winner, an entrepreneur, an international speaker and bestselling author and the creator of Social Jukebox. We are paid users of Social Jukebox and use it on a daily basis to promote the Communities That Convert podcast. It may even by why you are here. Tim shares with us some of his best tips and practices to get the most out of your evergreen content.Social Jukebox is an automated content delivery system. So it’s essentially Buffer that just keeps on going, When you get to the end of one of your content databases on Social Jukebox, the content will keep recycling over and over again like an hourglass that just keeps turning over. Question: What is Social Jukebox and why did you create it? Answer: In 2013, I published the book Alphabet Success. I was trying to build an audience to promote the book and found the process of scheduling posts to be mind-numbing things. You could carve your tweet on a granite tablet and send it on horseback to be delivered. The person receiving it on Twitter will have no idea that ever happened so they don’t care how it got there. As a result, I started looking around for a more efficient way to deliver the content. I ended up calling my former head of IT from Omega, that I sold in 2003, and asked him to build a tool to help me deliver my content to the social media sites. I didn’t intend to sell it, but I quickly found people were much more interested in why I was posting 24 hours a day then they were my book. I thought maybe it’s time to abandon the book and try the software business. So here we are. I just shared it with a few people in the beginning and it had a lot of utility. It just didn’t look very nice. So for people that are thinking about starting something, don’t get too hung up on getting it perfect. Just go for “good enough” when you’re getting started. Question: When you started, it only worked with Twitter, but now you have added a few more platforms, correct? Answer: We added the other two biggies in my mind, which are Facebook and LinkedIn, where most people have at least some presence. Almost everybody I think has a favorite go-to platform whether they’re doing a lot of Facebook marketing or whether they’re Twitter-centric. So we added those two platforms and, of course, we continue to look at other platforms to possibly add in the future. Question: What is evergreen content in your mind? Can you give us some examples? Answer: World Cup scores are great to share live or comment on. I have a connection with Sweden because my kids are half Swedish and Sweden’s actually South Korea right now as we are speaking. So that’s a great thing to live tweet because the game is happening now. It’s not a great thing to put in Social Jukebox because in a couple months it’ll be like, yeah we kind of know what happened with that event (Sweden won that match 1-0). Things that make great evergreen content include a social media tip, a great graphic, podcasts, blog posts are very often great, especially if they cover leadership or management. A good example is a plumber that creates videos about how homeowners can take care of jobs that are super easy, like how to tighten the washer onto someone’s sink can then be put in a Jukebox to be shared on Facebook and Twitter to develop a social community. It’s anything that would resonate with your audience on an ongoing basis. Today everyone’s their own media company. Media companies have editorial calendars and you can have an editorial calendar, too. You can create a Jukebox to share seasonal items only at a certain time of year. For instance, you could have content in a Jukebox for Black History Month, if that is something that would resonate with your audience. Question: For people that have not been on the tool yet, can you describe how it works? Answer: Jukeboxes are basically miniature databases of content that post over and over in a random pattern. When people quiz me as to why I chose to do it this way, I tell them that every time I tried to accurately predict the perfect time for the perfect content I was almost universally incorrect. If you have a particular kind of content that you want to share at a certain hour of the day, then that’s great, but don’t get too hung up on it being a specific post. In the Jukeboxes, the content is randomly going, and we also have a calendar for targeted posts where you’ve got a greater level of control. There are actually three different ways to schedule things: Auto-schedule allows you to decide how many times per day you want something to post from each Jukebox. It does it all for you and spaces out the posts. You can set a specific schedule for an entire Jukebox to be used over a specific period of time. You can also visual schedule, which looks like a giant excel spreadsheet. You can move posts around on that for people who want to tweak and get more specific with the time slots. What I recommend for those people is to use auto-schedule to create the massive schedule to start with and then go into the visual schedule and pinpoint different times. Question: What is the effectiveness of the system? Answer: The effectiveness and engagement will depend on the content. If you have a post that’s great, it’s going to get picked up and shared, but if you have a post that sucks, it’s not going to go anywhere. No amount of wizardry is going to make and uninteresting piece of content resonate with people. Think back to the TV shows Friends and Seinfeld. The whole idea was to get eyeballs and once you have those eyeballs, have enough trust generated that those eyeballs will stick around and watch the commercials. There’s lots of different ways to skin a cat and I think driving engagement comes from different ways, right? Some of the ways I have seen work include: Helpful content General interest content Things people find interesting or amusing. Interesting content could be just facts or something that you share that might be relevant to your audience and develop some pickup. Other things could just be pure entertainment. The key is going to be in what does your audience care about. Take the home shopping network, for instance. By my estimation, that whole channel is spam, right? But it’s a business. They don’t exist for no reason. There are people who sit at home and call the place up and order stuff. If they didn’t they go off the air. So it’s all about serving your audience and that’s the key. All that my tool can do is deliver that message to the audience you have. You can automatically add a hashtag to every post in a Jukebox by just adding it once in options instead of adding it to every post in the jukebox, which is much more efficient. But it does always go back to don’t try to put lipstick on a pig. If you don’t have good content you need to focus on fixing that because getting a new tool isn’t going to take you across the goal line. Question: Twitter has new policies in place when it comes to duplicating tweets. Does your tool violate any of these new rules? Can you talk a little bit about the new Twitter policy? Answer: Twitter has had a no duplicate policy since 2009. I don’t want to tempt fate, but the amount of resources that it would require for them to check every post that’s coming on against everything that’s been posted on your account before–you’re talking about a gargantuan amount of overhead. We run an algorithm now to make sure that people aren’t duplicating content too quickly as it goes out because we’re enforcing a 72 hour rule. I’m sure that if I contacted people at Twitter, they’d say it’s absolutely forbidden. But I haven’t heard from anybody that’s having a problem. My impression about these rules and what they were trying to combat is the rise of fake news. Particularly on Twitter where we’d see trends pop up and it was a six word phrase. How does the six word phrase trend? The only way a six word phrase trends is because a bunch of accounts are coordinating the posting. I could add a wrinkle to Social Jukebox where you could update a thousand accounts because you’d have a shared jukebox between all 1000 accounts or 10,000 accounts for 100,000 accounts. There really isn’t an upper limit as long as you have the server resources and you can automatically have that post go out to all those accounts more or less simultaneously. That is something Twitter specifically talked about when they were reaching out. And I’m sure it was the same for everybody that has a posting tool for Twitter. They were very keen to know how you could move content back and forth between accounts, how quickly it could be shared, things like that. So my impression, and I think it’s correct, was they really wanted to find a way to limit people who are trying to make something look as if it was news. And if and if you can have something trend and the articles look newsworthy, people only read the headline and don’t necessarily click on the link but that message becomes the takeaway. I think from Twitter’s perspective, you don’t want to be caught in the middle of this kind of chaos, with people putting out things that are just patently false on your platform.. I’m pretty sure what they were really after was to prevent that kind of thing. And by the way, they don’t like repetitive stuff, so I do think there’s going to be a higher level enforcement where you have to maybe wait, say six or seven hours before you can repeat a post and I’m sure the time table is going to continue to increase. But the idea that you could never share the same post again, I’m not saying never. I said I don’t want to tempt fate, but I don’t see that happening. Question: What makes Social Jukebox standout over similar services on the market? Answer: I like to keep the platform somewhat simple. I think there’s a tendency among almost all software tools to keep adding stuff until you have a product that is so complicated that you need a master’s degree to turn the thing on. It’s great to add features, but at the same time you add overhead to the process, you add complexity to the product, and as a result it very often it becomes intimidating to use it for the simple task that it was made for from the beginning. I’m much more interested in having it be really effective at the things that it’s really meant to do. I’d even include in that having a predictive tool about the best time to tweet is an idiot’s game. All you do is take everyone’s followers and tell them that at 8:00 AM in your area, most of your followers are online. Wow, that’s a real insight. And by the way, it’s not like you’re buying super bowl airtime. You’re adding posts, so why wouldn’t you post around the clock just with the idea that maybe you’ll get a great client from Malaysia? Maybe you’ll find somebody that’s really interested in what you do in New Zealand. Don’t be parochial and think that just because your existing audience is in a certain time zone that you should restrict yourself to that. In the ideal world, you’re not just serving who you’re talking to now. You’re expanding the number of people you’re talking to. At least that would be my key to marketing. I would say really our key is just keep simplifying the tool. I’m not saying take things away, but just try to make it easier and easier to use. If you ever have a support question for Social Jukebox, you get me, there is no support department. If you create a support department, they will do what you’ve mandated them to do. They will give great support on the product. Right? Very rarely are they going to try to figure out a way to eliminate their own job. And the reality is clients don’t want great support. They want a product they understand. And if you keep getting the same questions from customers, don’t figure out a great support answer, figure out a way to redesign the product so that the person doesn’t have a question anymore. That is my mindset. I’m incentivized as the entrepreneur because not only am I the one who’s going to have to ask the questions, but I’m also the person that can affect change. For me that’s a really important distinction, making sure that you’re constantly trying to eliminate the number of questions people might have about something rather than just try to find great ways to answer those questions. Our special encore guest today is Tim Fargo. He is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, and investor and founded investigative business firm Omega Insurance Services in 1996 with a credit card, grew it to over 300 employees, and sold it in 2003 for $20 million. He is now the President and CEO of socialjukebox.com — a social media content management system he developed and designed. Tim is also the author of Alphabet Success — Keeping it Simple. My Secrets to Success. Now...you may remember Tim and the wisdom he shared back in Episode 63 of Onward Nation. If you haven’t listened to, studied, and applied all he shared during our first interview...I highly encourage you to add Episode 63 to your list of vital priorities. What you'll learn about in this episode: How the freemium model works well for some business models and service offerings, but doesn't work as well for others How to determine whether the freemium model will work for your own business model How paying customers tend to be the easiest work with while "free" customers have a tendency to ask lazy questions Why many companies invest a lot of resources into creating a free product only to not receive much in terms of returns from the free product The differences between the freemium model and offering a free trial, and how to transition from the former to the latter How very few people tend to convert from the freemium model to the paid version of the product The importance of focusing on the needs of your business and not paying attention to what others believe you need to do or have to be successful How moving away from the freemium model can reduce operating costs without impacting the top line revenue of a business The importance of recognizing that it is largely a waste of time to try and please everyone, particularly individuals who cannot be pleased under any reasonable circumstances How not every customer or client is an individual that your company should have a relationship and that it is okay to let some customers or clients go The importance of choosing the freemium model for the right reasons and not because someone told you that you should Ways to contact Tim: Website: www.socialjukebox.com (Use code “Onward20” for a special Onward Nation listener discount) Email: tim@socialjukebox.com Book: "Alphabet Success: Keeping It Simple - My Secrets to Success" Twitter: @tim_fargo LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/timothyfargo
Back in July of 2013, I started using Twitter to try to help sell my book, Alphabet Success (a story about success built around my last business). In an effort to keep things interesting, I scheduled a fair number of tweets. One thing became clear very quickly: scheduling tweets took an incredible amount of time. Much of what I was tweeting was “evergreen” and wouldn't change much over time, so I ended up scheduling things repeatedly over the course of a month. However, it had to be done, and it was better than sitting in front of the computer doing it live. But the thought stuck in my mind: “There's got to be a better way.” Finally, on November 7, 2013, I asked my friend and long-time colleague Len Sixt, if he wanted to develop a Twitter™ app for me. At this point, there was no thought of marketing the tool as a product. I just wanted a tool to save me the time of scheduling tweets. Even though the app was pretty expensive as a private toy, I figured it saved me hiring someone to schedule things on my behalf. By January 2014, a “baby” Social Jukebox was born, I had some basic functions to use, and it automatically saved me a ton of time. So we just kept plowing away and improving the program. Over the next few months, I would occasionally mention it to people. They seemed intrigued. Then, at the end of January 2015, we finally said, why not? So we pushed the app out into the market. Quietly, but “out” nonetheless. The response was wonderful. People liked it. We've had some more work to do, as with most projects, but the overall consensus was quite positive. After a very successful free trial when over 30,000 users signed up, we decided to launch a paid version. Over 1,500 users took advantage of the new offering over the next few months. While we were delighted with the success of the product, nothing stands still. So in early 2016, plans began to launch Social Jukebox with posting to Facebook and LinkedIn, in addition to Twitter. As these plans progressed, Len made a decision to move forward with his retirement. He knew the product would only continue to grow and wanted to step to the side to allow a development team take over the coding for the product. In July of 2016, beta testing of Social Jukebox began. In spite of some inevitable glitches, the initial users were pleased with the product. The current product was rolled out to all users in August of 2016. Obviously, I think there's a little more to the man than that, and you'll hear about it on this interview. And it's a good one. Got kids who have ever failed? You ever failed? This is the episode for you. And of course, Tim is massively ADHD. We knew that from his bio, though. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 66 of the No Quit Living Podcast. NQL is a personal development podcast designed to help listeners achieve their goals and desires. Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated. Our 2nd ever, with many more to come, over seas interview was with Tim Fargo. The theme of today's show is "dreaming big," and Tim's story is sure to inspire you to do so. He's living proof that anybody is capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. His no quit story involves him getting served a lawsuit with his first business partner at a Christmas party that was filled with clients. That was terrible timing for Tim, but to make things worse, his partner had a background in law and the suit took years to complete. Though it was difficult, Tim let his lawyer do his job and focused his time and efforts into running his business. Tim talks about the importance of focus and how there are times where he puts unimportant tasks at the top of his priority list subconsciously to mask the important ones that are essential. When this happens, he checks himself and re-prioritizes. One of the most memorable parts of today's episode for us at NQL was Tim's quote - "If you want something different, do something different." Twitter Smarter Podcast with Madalyn Sklar - The Best Twitter Tips from the Pros
Tim Fargo is the CEO of Tweet Jukebox, an amazing and powerful Twitter tool. It’s a personal favorite of mine which I use every day for marketing my brand on Twitter. It’s a free scheduling tool that allows you to load a “jukebox” with content, schedule when you want tweets to go out and then sit back and let it do the job for you. Tim is a bestselling author, a keynote speaker, an angel investor, and an entrepreneur. Back in the 90’s, he co-founded an insurance fraud investigation company that became the second largest in the US and which he later sold for $20 million. Listen in as Tim shares with us how Tweet Jukebox actually came about and what makes it so popular among Twitter users. Episode Highlights: Tim didn’t start with the idea of making Tweet Jukebox a business. It was actually a by-product of traveling, initially intended for his own personal use. Tim mentions that when you’re designing something for yourself with the kind of care and attention you put to it, it ends up becoming the kind of product that a lot of people want. Tweet Jukebox is a powerful tool that frees you from constantly scheduling your tweets. Now you can spend more time engaging with your audience which Tim considers as the most powerful element of social media. Tim’s goal for Tweet Jukebox is to be a multi-platform social media content manager and to make it a little ecosystem of itself. Watch out for more cool features that they’re currently working on. Tweetables: “Tweet Jukebox was a bit of an accident. It just kind of happened.” tweet this “The best way to use it is take the time you save and use that to engage with your audience.” tweet this “Feedback is a form of currency.” tweet this Links to tools and resources mentioned in this episode: Tweet Jukebox Hootsuite – social media management tool SocialBro – Twitter analytics and management tool Crowdfire – social media engagement app Buffer – social media management tool Check out Britt Michaelian’s Mass Amplify Show featuring Tim Fargo Listen to the #TwitterSmarter Podcast episode 15 with Britt Michaelian Check out the recent article on my blog, Twitter Chats – The Place Where Everyone Knows Your Name Tweet Chats Mentioned: #MediaChat #SocialChat #InfluencerChat #ViralChat #BlogElevated #TwitterSmarter Visit www.madalynsklar.com/twitterchats for more information. Tim Fargo is an entrepreneur, speaker, author, and a two-time Inc. 500 Winner! He's the author of the Amazon best seller, Alphabet Success - Keeping it Simple. My Secrets to Success. He has three citizenships and has lived on four continents. Part of his lifestyle is borne from his going from bankruptcy in 1991, to selling his business in 2003 for $20M. He now runs a SaaS business (tweetjukebox.com) which allows him to stay in the game without staying in one place. Tim Fargo might know a little something about attracting, converting and retaining new customers. He grew Omega Insurance Services from a three person operation in an extra bedroom to over 300 employees and with revenues in excess of $20 million. After selling Omega, Tim tried his hand at several businesses, some of which were not successful. Tim is the author of the best seller, Alphabet Success, an investor in numerous businesses, and an active adviser to several start-up firms. Today he is the founder of Tweet Jukebox, a software as a service (SaaS) content management system for your Twitter account. Tim launched Tweet Jukebox with only a freemium model. He initially built a user base of around 24,000 people. When he launched the paid model, he converted around 3% of his freemium customers to paying customers, which is an amazing conversion rate. In this interview with Social Entrepreneur, Tim talks about the bad, the good and the great of starting up a business and attracting your first customers. Key quotes from the interview: “Being early isn’t always the advantage people think it is.” “Just because there are other competitors in a space, don’t shy away from it. That means that there are people who buy whatever that is.” “I encourage people to stay close to their work when they’re launching something and not to build a cast of thousands.” “The way you make the most awesome helpdesk is to keep changing your product so that you don’t need one.” “Having people watch a two-minute video does a much more robust job of explaining.” “When you’re getting started, the real mandate is: sell it, ship it and get paid. If you can do those three things, you’re in business.” “Success is like sausage. You’d be surprised what goes into it.” Resources: Book: Alphabet Success: Keeping it Simple - My Secrets to Success: http://amzn.to/1IJDaGM Tweet Jukebox: http://www.tweetjukebox.com Tim Fargo on Twitter: https://twitter.com/alphabetsuccess Also Mentioned in this Episode: eBook: Five Key Traits of Successful Social Entrepreneurs: http://tonyloyd.com/socent Try Audible and Receive Two Free Audiobooks: http://tonyloyd.com/books

Tim has over 190k Twitter followers, he built and sold a successful business for $20 million dollars Tim believes that the only way to be successful is to help others. On Twitter- Created or curated content is OK, just make sure your content is compelling. Stay consistent to your theme. Start off doing your own customer service. Many big companies feel they have a marketing problem, but really they have an execution problem. If they would treat their customers better, they wouldn't have to work so hard to get new ones. A customer who shows up for price, will also leave for price. If you want to start a business, get a job in the industry first. You will be more successful if you learn about a business from the inside before you try to do it yourself. Don't open a restaurant just because you like to eat food. Stephen is the CEO of Predictive ROI and host of the Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, speaker, trainer, and his digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and other media. Good Morning Onward Nation. This is Stephen Woessner. I am grateful you decided to be here this morning — to be here right now –– to share your most precious resource with me and Onward Nation –– your resource of time. We all have the same 86,400 seconds in a day and I consider it a sacred exchange of time and value — so I am delighted you and I can have this time together today. Let’s start off by considering some difficult questions — and then as I always try to do — I’ll leave you with some action steps that you can apply into your business to move onward to that next level. How do we become great? How do we achieve greatness in all we do? How do we realize our full potential — your dream for success? Les Brown said, “I don’t believe that any of us are giving dreams that we cannot accomplish. It is possible. You can have your dream as you run toward it.” So why can’t you be the best in your industry? Why? Why not you? You may have heard these words from Sylvester Stallone… “Let me tell you something you already know. The world is not all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place. And I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you’re worth — then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers and saying you ain’t where you want to be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that, and that ain’t you. You’re better than that.” Onward Nation…even some of the people who are closest to you — want you to fail. It isn’t because they are bad people. It’s because they love you and don’t want to lose you. But you can’t let their fears stop you. You have to decide that no matter what — no matter what you have to sacrifice in order to achieve greatness — you simply have to decide and finally agree with yourself that you are worthy to pursue your dream. That your dream — that deeply personal dream you are scared and afraid to be bold enough to chase with all of your gusto — that you are worthy to achieve that dream. That you will SHOW the world how great you are. Playing small does not serve your purpose — does not serve your WHY — and certainly does not serve God with all of the abundance of talents you were blessed with so you could build an extraordinary life for you, your family, and leave your impact on this world. If you are not making someone else’s life better — then you are wasting your time. Onward Nation…pain is temporary — it may last for a hour, day, a week, or even a year. But it will subside and be replaced by something else. But if you quit…your pain of regret will last forever. Instead, I encourage you to dig deep and pursue greatness like Bryan Arzani did. Bryan was my guest on episode 75 of Onward Nation. Bryan was broken…he was beat down by circumstances…by the fear of failure. He nearly went bankrupt twice. But he had the guts to keep moving forward. He said no to the fear and said “I WIN” and now he has. Because he decided greatness and success would be his fate. Or maybe you a listening to my voice right now and thinking to yourself…easy for you to say, Stephen…I just got served with this lawsuit from someone I trusted…a family member…or a business partner. How can I possibly go on? And if that is you…then do what Tim Fargo, my guest for episode 64, did. Tim shared the story of when he was at a Christmas party with friends and business associates and was served papers for a $10 million lawsuit — while he was at the party. Who was suing him? His former business partner — who also happened at the party! Did he quit? No. Why? Because Tim wanted to succeed as bad as he wanted to breathe. He dug deep — he fought — he won — and went on to great success when he sold his company. Oftentimes, one of the keys to success is being all-in on what you working so hard to accomplish. Eliminating any path of retreat. So Onward Nation, are you financially all-in with your business like Cody Foster? Cody was my guest during episode 80. Cody and his two co-founders at Advisors Excel invested everything they had 10 years ago to create the company. And it was not millions of dollars. It is was a modest amount while sitting at Cody’s kitchen table. Cody, Derrick, and David were all in ten years ago — and now they have built a company that will achieve over $5 billion this year. Or how about Carl Wright, my guest on episode 45 of Onward Nation. After the real estate market crashed…Carl was $14 million in debt. $14 million! He didn’t quit — instead — he took a few days to sit, think, and let the plan come to him. And then he decided he would make it happen. He would do it. And then he did it. He pursued it with all the energy he had — to make his vision a reality. You, Onward Nation, need to be the only person who you give permission to tell you what is so. And that is what Carl did, and now his company has built a real estate portfolio worth $100 million. All because Carl had the desire to be great and the will to win that pushed him forward. Carl was willing to pay the price and a little bit more. You have to do whatever it takes to get the job done. In the words of Art Williams… “Just do it, and do it, and do it, and do it, until the job gets done,” Onward Nation. The real challenge of greatness comes when you get knocked down and how you respond. Do you remember the story of Larry Winget, my guest in episode 98? He went to work, rich — and then by the time he left to go home that same day, he was poor and had lost everything. Not because of anything he did but because of circumstances outside his control in his industry. What did Larry do? Did he feel sorry for himself? Did he gather around a support group to listen to all of his misfortune and tell him it would be better someday? No. He developed a training program that contained four modules and then he started at the “A’s” in the phonebook selling the modules. Was it a glamorous way to make money? No. Was it effective? Yes. Why? Because no one else is willing to make that sacrifice — that same level of commitment. But that is what Larry did, and he won. Or how about David Mylrea, my guest on episode 35. At the beginning of his career, he was selling cars at a small town dealership in the heart of Wisconsin. When the gas crisis of the late 70s hit — and the country seemingly was no longer in the market for large gas guzzling cars, and the foot traffic at the dealership slowed –– did David quit? No. What did he do? He and his wife sat at their kitchen table…and typed letters to people right out of the phonebook…and mailed them. And what happened? People brought the letters into the dealership to see David and bought some cars. Why? Because no one had ever done that before. Onward Nation…it would have been easy for David, Larry, Carl, Bryan, and Tim to quit. But they didn’t. They allowed their pain to be part of their prize — to be part of their journey. They harnessed their will and challenged themselves to be successful. Just like Stacey Alcorn, my amazing guest for episode 3. When she had lost it all she could have given up and no one would have blamed her for quitting. But she didn’t. Instead she said yes to her dreams, she said yes to her unfolding future, instead of saying no. Now Stacey is a billionaire in the making and dominating the real estate industry in Massachusetts. Failure is the an ingredient to the recipe for success and greatness. Just listen to the stories of all the amazing and incredible business owners who have graced this show — the one thing the majority of them have in common is some sort of failure and sometimes a cataclysmic collapse — an epic failure of massive proportion. The loser is the one who fails and then quits. The loser and the winner have both failed. The difference is that the winner got back up again — got back into the ring — and pushed forward — learning from the past. While the loser sat there feeling sorry for himself or herself — making excuses why it didn’t work out, looking for a sympathetic ear, looking for a shoulder to cry on…anything to point to so that it didn’t have to be them who had failed. Fear kills dreams, Onward Nation. Fear kills hope. Fear puts people in the hospital. Fear can age you. Fear can hold you back from doing something that you know within yourself you are capable of doing but it will paralyze you. You are an incredible child of the most high God. You have every talent and skill already inside you that you need in order to be successful. It’s not easy. This road — this journey to success. But success leaves clues so let me share with you what I learned from Don Yaeger, one of my closest friends and most trusted mentors. Don created a list that he calls the 16 Characteristics of Greatness that he built after interview the most successful champions of our time. And then Don took the list deeper by creating the “Greatness Action List”. Step 1: I will not make excuses. Michael Jordan said, “A loss is not a failure until you make an excuse.” Step 2: I will constantly evaluate my inner circle, surrounding myself with those headed someplace special. Step 3: I will set aside time each day to re-center myself. Step 4: I will encourage at least one person each day. Step 5: I will do the necessary “homework” to make each day — each meeting — as productive as possible. Step 6: I will seek out a new opportunity for personal or professional growth every day. Step 7: I will envision success – actually see it in my mind — in all I do. Step 8: I will be better, not bitter, in moments of adversity. Step 9: I will not be intimidated by taking thoughtful risks. Step 10: I will stay open-minded, not allowing old patterns or habits to hold me back. Step 11: I will point out the contributions of others. Step 12: I will consider what I can do or sacrifice to help strengthen my team. Step 13: I will do something today for someone who cannot give me anything in return. Step 14: I will act all day as if my son or daughter (or my future child) were sitting by my side. Step 15: I will relish the chance to be a standard for others. Step 16: I will remember that my life requires balance. Put those characteristics to work in your business — in your life. And if you want a daily dose of greatness…go to DonYaeger.com and subscribe for his daily dose of greatness email — it is amazing. So, before I leave you today…there is one last point I want to make. Our time here on this Earth is limited — so please don’t waste it living someone else’s life. We all have the same 86,400 seconds in a day so make sure, Onward Nation, that you are living the life you want to live and building the business you want to build and pursuing the dreams you want to pursue. That your dreams are big enough, bold enough, courageous enough, so you can look back on your life with no regret. Please don’t settle. Have the courage to follow your heart. You are going to experience a lot of setbacks, a lot of pain…but you are more powerful than you could ever imagine. You are greater than your circumstances. You can look at that snooze button and go back to bed…or you can get up at 4:00 in the morning and get a 4-hour start on most of your competitors…get a half-day’s work in — 50% more strategy, 50% more content written, 50% more sales calls, 50% more emails to prospects…all of that — 50% more of your vital metrics by just getting up early. You can lay there in bed and dream about your dreams — fantasize about them — or — you can punch that clock, get up, and go pursue them. There’s a reason why we release all of our daily episodes at 4:00 in the morning, Onward Nation. One last quote…and I have this hanging on one of my office walls… “Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up and knows that it must run faster than the fastest Lion that day, or it will be killed and eaten. Every morning in Africa, a Lion wakes up and knows that it must run faster than the slowest Gazelle that day, or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter, Onward Nation, if you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” Decide to make a great day. And I look forward to being with you again tomorrow when we share my interview with Mitch Stephen. Until then…Onward with gusto! ------ OnwardNation.com ------
Tim Fargo, founder of Tweet Jukebox, talks with us about starting over in the SaaS space after a $20 million dollar exit in the service space. He's figuring it out as he goes, and jumping right in the deep end. He's build a large tribe of free users and i Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Tim Fargo's numbers speak for themselves. He launched his first serious venture in 1996 - an "offline" business built around investigating insurance fraud. Over 7 years he grew the company, Omega Insurance Services, from a 3 man team in his 2nd bedroom, to a $20million company with over 300 employees, culminating in a 1x sale. Today, he's back to software solutions, and has bootstrapped his newest SaaS side project, TweetJukebox, from 0-20k users in 7 months with minimal investment. Talking with Tim was refreshing. As it turns out, the fundamentals of good business are still the same as the were 20 years ago, and his experience as an entrepreneur who scaled and sold a Human Resource based business, but is also in the SaaS business, affords him a unique perspective.
Tim is a two-time Inc. 500 winner, the Founder of Tweet Jukebox, and the Author of Alphabet Success. He is a citizen of three countries and a resident of four continents.
Business doesn't have to be all that complicated. Sometimes a reminder to just keep it simple and get down to business is the best advice you can get. In other words, clarity and action will get you where you want to go! After numerous failed attempts to build a business, Tim Fargo went bankrupt in 1991. By 1996, he again started another business. He led that business to the Inc. 500 list twice, and ultimately sold in 2003 for $20M. Tim is the author of Alphabet Success: Keeping it Simple - My Secrets to Success. He is currently bootstrapping tweetjukebox.com, an automated content management system for Twitter that has grown to over 10,000 active users in less than five months.
Growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood, Tim sought out his fortune early, but it remained elusive. Even after bankruptcy in 1991, he persevered. In 1996, he started his umpteenth business, but this time he grew it to over 300 employees and sold it for $20 million in 2003. Now, he's bootstrapping again with his time-saving content manager, tweetjukebox.com. Having laid a tremendous groundwork through his two years on Twitter, the app is taking Twitter by storm. In 2016, the service will expand to other social media platforms as well. Secret -- time saving technique Making a list of two or three vital priorities is the go-to timesaving technique that helps Tim move his business forward. ONWARD! Daily habit that contributes to success Tim exercises every morning, which helps him kickstart the early part of the workday. Could have ruined your business -- but now -- an invaluable learning experience Tim had to go through a long legal process -- and Tim tells the whole story here. Most critical skill you think business owners need to master to be successful “A business owner needs to understand that expertise isn't determined by a range of skills.” Most influential lesson learned from a mentor “There are a number of important values to impart on a business's culture -- so keep the ball rolling.” Final Round -- “Breaking Down the Recipe for Success” What systems would you go back and put into place sooner? I would have gone back and put a simple component based system in place to help with the flow of business. What one strategy or “recipe” would compound into big wins for business owners? Being nimble is dictated by a business owner's ability to simplify a series of process. How to exceed expectations and add the most value? An individual who brings energy -- devotes their time -- and is dedicated to problem-solving. What strategy would you recommend new business owners focus on to best ensure success? Tim has over 190k Twitter followers, he built and sold a successful business for $20 million dollars, and Doug interviewed him while he was in Poland. Tweet Jukebox is a great tool to automate your tweets and has thousands of users after just a couple of months. Here are some of the highlights: • Tim believes that the only way to be successful is to help others. • On Twitter- Created or curated content is OK, just make sure your content is compelling. • Stay consistent to your theme. • Start off doing your own customer service. • Many big companies feel they have a marketing problem, but really they have an execution problem. If they would treat their customers better, they wouldn't have to work so hard to get new ones. • A customer who shows up for price, will also leave for price. • If you want to start a business, get a job in the industry first. You will be more successful if you learn about a business from the inside before you try to do it yourself. • Don't open a restaurant just because you like to eat food. Tim Fargo, successful entrepreneur and author of Alphabet Success, is my guest today. His early ambition was simply to get a union job on a loading dock. He did much better than that! He paved his road to success with old-fashioned determination, hard work, and an unwillingness to let failure and setbacks define him. Listen to this great conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes from Show: His goal was to get a union job on the loading docks. He did significantly better than that. You may be thinking about it, but the successful person is doing something about it. Maybe it's going to work or maybe it's not, but you'll never know unless you try. Don't hold yourself accountable for another person's behavior. "Do" is the key element to success. We used "jujitsu." We took the negative energy they threw at us and flipped it into a positive. Don't be so quick to label something as "bad." It may be the thing that takes you to success. It's never an easy thing to do but you have to end toxic relationships. If you are doing all the heavy lifting for someone else, you are training them into a bad behavior. If you’re an author entrepreneur or work in the business of books, then you’ve probably learned that there is no magic formula for success. A no-name author can become an breakout bestseller. And a best-selling author can publish a dud. Often times, we trick ourselves into thinking that there IS a formula for success, and that any failures we experience somehow went against the gain. Tim Fargo proves that myth dead wrong. Tim is the author of the delight book, Alphabet Success. As Tim says, “to truly succeed you need to execute the basics.” In today’s conversation, Tim and I explore just how pernicious the ‘magic formula’ thinking is for enterprising authors—which, in part, influenced how he structured his book. Alternatively, Tim shares his insights on the types of behaviors and decisions that do increase the odds for success with a book or any entrepreneurial business. After the show, find us on Twitter @WinningEdits or #authormba with your questions and comments. Enjoy!
