On this week's show, we're thankful for new records from Pixies, Fantastic Negrito and Kim Deal, archival music from the legendary Lone Justice and a reissue of Tom Petty & The Herartbreakers' most underrated record. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
Here is the last interview conducted with Lone Justice. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to listen to the first two episodes and our conversations with Marvin Etzioni and Ryan Hedgecock. Drummer Don Heffington passed in 2021, but through modern studio wizardry, he is an active participant in the "new to you" release Viva Lone Justice. These interviews have been released in the order in which they were conducted. This last episode is our conversation with lead singer Maria McKee Think of this as our Rashomon episode.
Over the next three days, we'll release three separate interviews with the surviving members of the band Lone Justice: Marvin Etzioni, Ryan Hedgecock, and Maria McKee. Drummer Don Heffington passed in 2021, but through modern studio wizardry, he is an active participant in the "new to you" release Viva Lone Justice. These interviews are being released in the order in which they were conducted. The first is bass player and songwriter, Marvin Etzioni. Think of this as our Rashomon episode.
In this special episode, Donna and Dr. Adam are joined by musician Willie Aron! Willie, who is a Grammy nominee, worked with Donna to bring to life her first concert in over 50 years at Tiki Oasis in 2016. Donna and Willie share memories of that event and, in conversation with Donna and Dr Adam, Willie discusses his wide-ranging and diverse career as a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and educator. Willie's first band was 1980's cult lo-fi rock, garage quartet "The Balancing Act", whose album “Curtains” was produced by the legendary Andy Gill (“Gang of Four”). From there, he has worked constantly as a session musician, film and television composer, performer and producer, including working with Leonard Cohen, Tood Lawrence (known as Milo Binder), Anjani Thomas, and his collaborator, Marvin Etzioni, in the duo "Thee Holy Brothers", whose name was influenced by Willie's relationship with Leonard Cohen! Willie also shares his experiences of loss and the trio discuss the importance of self-compassion, balancing intellect and spirit, and the importance of the arts to all of us. Don't miss this insider's perspective into the sounds and people of the LA music scene! This conversation is available as an audio episode and will also be available as a video with Donna, Dr. Adam, and Willie!
The Hooters have new music (!!) and will be on tour this summer with Rick Springfield, Paul Young and Tommy Tutone (and some other artists depending on the market). These events transpired after our conversation about the band's 1985 album Nervous Night. We've long been fans of the legendary Philly group who notched a number of successful hit singles -- while also stepping outside of the Hooters camp to write additional smash hits for other artists. So it was a total delight when Jonathan Rundman approached us and asked if we'd be game to chatter about Nervous Night. Of course, we said yes nearly immediately. We also dig into the details behind Jonathan's 25th anniversary reissue of his album, Recital and his memories of the time period. Jonathan has a busy 2023 currently in progress, including solo dates and additional performances with the Silos and the Rundman Family Band. In short, there was a lot to talk about. Our thanks to Jonathan for sharing his story and a lot of good laughs.P.S. Matt is sorry for interrupting Jonathan more than any other guest in the history of this podcast ;-)P.S.S. Jonathan did a great story about David Williams of the Williams Brothers and Marvin Etzioni which you can read right here. Thanks as always for listening. On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice. He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists. In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched. Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee). Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David). Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song. In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product. In 2012, Etzioni released the 2-disc album Marvin Country on Nine Mile Records. On the album, which had been in development since 1985, Etzioni played mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, piano, Mellotron, porchboard and keyboards. Included are duets with Lucinda Williams ("Lay It on the Table"),Steve Earle ("Ain't No Work in Mississippi"), Richard Thompson ("It Don't Cost Much"), Buddy Miller ("Living Like a Hobo"), John Doe ("The Grapes of Wrath"), Maria McKee ("You Possess Me"), and the Dixie Hummingbirds ("You Are the Light"). For most songs, the backing band was Heffington (drums), Steve Fishell (pedal steel), Gurf Morlix (bass), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Buddy Miller and Duane Jarvis (guitar). “Memories To Burn” The Williams Brothers come from a rich musical lineage that goes all the way back to the late ‘30s, when Williams Brothers Andy, Dick, Bob and Don started their singing quartet that took them all the way from their home state of Iowa to sunny Los Angeles, where they appeared in movies and were under contract with MGM Films. The second iteration of The Williams Brothers featured Don's sons Andrew and David, who put out two albums in 1973. As teen idols they had a hit with “What's Your Name" and even made an appearance on The Partridge Family. They resurfaced again in the late ‘80s, putting out a trio of fabulous albums for Warner Brothers, their last being 1993's Harmony Hotel. Along the way they backed up Brian Setzer, Joe Ely and The Cruzados, sang back up on the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" and were part of T-Bone Burnett's band for a tour of Europe. They had a hit with "Can't Cry Enough" in '92, appeared as an Everly Brothers duo in Alison Anders' Grace Of My Heart and after that…..well, after that, they stepped away and lived their lives. 28 years later we have Memories To Burn. This album gets done in 30 minutes what most bands try to do their entire careers. The harmonies are lustrous and elegant and the phrasing is delivered with finesse and grace. The two brothers' vocal interplay is effortless, organic and soul-affirming. Featuring covers by Robbie Fulks and Iris DeMent and with a band that features the marvelous Marvin Etzioni and Greg Liesz, Memories To Burn is one of 2022's very best. Good to have these guys back. "East Of Eden" Well, most great stories start in the East and end up in the west and the story of Marvin Etizoni does exactly that. The Brooklyn born musician and his family moved to L.A. in the '70s and it didn't take long for Etzioni to fit right in. His first band Model played with everyone from the Plimsolls to the Motels, and his next band Lone Justice signed to Geffen and opened for U2. Not too shabby. Etzioni left Lone Justice after their first record and from there he got really busy. So busy in fact, it would take a full podcast to cover everything so bear with this partial list. Etzioni put out a series of awesome solo albums, produced artists like Peter Case, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Counting Crows, wrote songs for Jimmy Barnes, Victoria Williams, Voice of the Beehive, the Williams Brothers and Judy Collins, appeared on records by Dogs Eye View, the Dixie Chicks and Lily Haydn and he has a band called Thee Holy Brothers with Willie Aron of the Balancing Act. If you want to get an idea as to how respected Etzioni is in the music industry, consider this: one of his solo albums called Marvin Country, features duets with Richard Thompson, John Doe, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. And this probably won't surprise you, but Etzioni is really busy. The President of Regional Records, he's in the studio working on Lone Justice tracks and finishing up the new Thee Holy Brothers record; additionally, he's prepping the release of the first new Williams Brothers album in almost 30 years, and Lone Justice are going to be included in an upcoming Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit alongside the Byrds, the Eagles and more. The mandolin-playing Etzioni has had quite a career, and this is quite a conversation. www.regionalrecords.com www.marvincountry.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! We have a special show today. It's one that honors MLK and celebrates the fact that music is returning to the White House! It's been a vast, cultural wasteland for the past four years, but I got some great news about the musical treats in store as the Biden-Harris administration officially begins in just two days. I'll fill you in, and then bring on Lili Haydn and Marvin Etzioni. They're two artists who both have new music out dealing with the strange times we're living through right now. They each have a song perfect for MLK Day and, although they don't work together regularly, they're old friends who have written songs together, including one that's on Lili's new album, that we'll also hear today. The old adage goes something like "music hath charms to soothe the savage breast". Yes, I know. I thought it was beast too, but it's breast. Either way, it does. And today, we welcome music back to the White House. Welcome back music. We really missed you!
We're now more than a week out from the election being called for Joe Biden, yet the orange man in the White House still won't concede. It may be a lame duck period, but Donald the Duck is upending democracy and threatening the peaceful transfer of power in America. On today's show, I check in with Jack Rice. He's a radio colleague of mine, who currently practices law in Minneapolis and was a CIA case officer. It's in that capacity that I have some questions for him about what Trump is doing. And because I believe strongly in the power of music to heal, we'll end the day with another visit and another song from Marvin Etzioni, off his new album, "What's the Mood of the Country Now".
When we last met on Friday, it was apparent that Joe Biden would be the 46th President of the United States, but none of the usual suspects would make the call. So it dragged on for another day before CNN called Pennsylvania for Biden, pushing his total of Electoral College Votes past the 270 needed to win. And the other news organizations all fell into place. The only entities not willing to concede that Trump lost are the Trump campaign and administration. I'll spend most of the show today bringing you up to speed on what happened this weekend and today, and try to figure out what happens next. In the last segment of today's show, I'm joined by an old friend, musician Marvin Etzioni, co-founder of the band Lone Justice. Marvin has a new album out, "What's the Mood of the Country Now?" and it works for this moment in history. We'll meld the world of music and politics and see where it takes us...

Joining in on the interview is Marvin Etzioni who was a catalyst in the creation of Goldtop. Together they discuss the bands formation, the origins of the name, the best Canadian cities to play and naked cries. Lone Justice were mid-Eighties pioneers. Blending elements of country, punk & rock, the band, led by fiery vocalist Maria McKee, gained a reputation for their incendiary live shows. Although praised by critics, the band never received commercial success, and broke up in 1989. Yet, over the following years, the group has been cited as a major influence by many bands. Now comes This is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983, a collection of 12 early recordings the band made before signing with a major label. Icon Fetch talks with original Lone Justice bassist Marvin Etzioni, who has kept these tapes in his garage for years. He tells us the story of how he joined the band and the circumstances that led to these fantastic recordings, made available for the first time.
The 3rd Defying Gravity Music Podcast with host Brandon Schott. This month’s guest is the legendary Marvin Etzioni.
Marvin Etzioni is known as the Mandolin Man, but he may be better known as the founding bassist of the roots rock band Lone Justice. He's also produced numerous artists, including Toad The Wet Sprocket and Peter Case, along with putting out a few solo projects. We caught up with Marvin here in Nashville for the special CD release party for his latest double album "Marvin Country." Here's Kelly Lynn at NSAI with more.
