On this week's show, we're thankful for new records from Pixies, Fantastic Negrito and Kim Deal, archival music from the legendary Lone Justice and a reissue of Tom Petty & The Herartbreakers' most underrated record. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
Here is the last interview conducted with Lone Justice. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to listen to the first two episodes and our conversations with Marvin Etzioni and Ryan Hedgecock. Drummer Don Heffington passed in 2021, but through modern studio wizardry, he is an active participant in the "new to you" release Viva Lone Justice. These interviews have been released in the order in which they were conducted. This last episode is our conversation with lead singer Maria McKee Think of this as our Rashomon episode.

On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice. He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists. In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched. Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee). Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David). Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song. In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product. In 2012, Etzioni released the 2-disc album Marvin Country on Nine Mile Records. On the album, which had been in development since 1985, Etzioni played mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, piano, Mellotron, porchboard and keyboards. Included are duets with Lucinda Williams ("Lay It on the Table"),Steve Earle ("Ain't No Work in Mississippi"), Richard Thompson ("It Don't Cost Much"), Buddy Miller ("Living Like a Hobo"), John Doe ("The Grapes of Wrath"), Maria McKee ("You Possess Me"), and the Dixie Hummingbirds ("You Are the Light"). For most songs, the backing band was Heffington (drums), Steve Fishell (pedal steel), Gurf Morlix (bass), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Buddy Miller and Duane Jarvis (guitar). She came on my radar in 1989 riding high on the "cowpunk" trend of the late 80s that included BoDeans and Lone Justice. For me, that label wasn't fitting for her style as she was a classic country crooner. But, like Maria McKee of Lone Star fame — there was something unique about her and lordy that voice. While already receiving praise for her first two albums "Shadowland" and "A Truly Western Experience," and "Angel with a Lariat" (the latter two with the Reclines), it was her album (also with the Reclines) "Absolute Torch and Twang," that blew me away. The comparisons between KD Lang and Patsy Cline were well deserved and "Pullin' Back the Reins" remains one of my all-time favorites. By 1992, she moved in a more pop-centric direction that still retained elements of her folk roots and released "Ingénue." This album and the lead single "Constant Craving" brought her not only acclaim but the worldwide recognition she rightfully deserved. Her performance of the Leonard Cohen classic "Hallelujah" at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Colombia is only bested by Whitney Houston's "Star Spangled Banner" in live event vocal performances. Her rendition was not only stirring but heartfelt, which mesmerized me at the same time. If there ever was any doubt about this woman's talent — this performance was proof of the contrary. It wasn't until a year later that Abigail covered "Constant Craving" and made the song an underground Eurodance hit. Her label subsequently commissioned remixes for several of her new releases going forward. You know how us gay folk operate. If we latch onto someone — we're gonna remix it and put it on the dancefloor. K.D. Lang's induction into the Diva Hall of Fame represents all the singles that were remixed by her label in various iterations (save "Constant Craving," which is an edit of the original). It is with great pleasure to include one of our own in the Diva Hall of Fame as Miss KD Lang takes her rightful place among the many talented women that have filled up this ever-expanding series. I don't know how KD feels about her music being remixed but we adore this woman and it's our way of showing our gratitude for sharing her talent with the rest of the world. I cannot think of a better person to represent the LGBTQ+ community. We love you. The original release of Ms. Lang's induction contained an edit of "Constant Craving". Party Favorz expressed our disappointment that there were no viable remixes of this great song at that ti...
Jim Irvin is joined by two more bringers of undervalued joy: country-punk pioneer with a thousand years of LA heritage, and creator of one of the show's favourite albums, Maria McKee, and long-time staffer of Prog magazine, Jo Kendall. The albums up for discussion are: Billy Mackenzie - Transmission Impossible (2004), Fairport Convention - Fairport Convention (1968) and Renaissance - Renaissance (1969) Also discussed: burying the Queen, hanging out in LA with Love's Bryan Maclean (Maria's brother), trauma and mental illness as a spur for art, the wide world of contemporary prog, knitting to Hendrix, singing Beefheart in the bath and much more. You can find an accompanying Spotify playlist including all three albums here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3g4rNTypxJDw0l6IRAqboR?si=502e61bdb58f4b5a For comments or questions on the show, please go to jimirvin.com and send an email via the Contact page or visit the You're Not On The List page at anchor.fm to leave a voice message.

Kristian Hoffman ran away from his boyhood home in Santa Barbara, California, to New York City where he and his high school friend, Lance Loud, formed a band called The Mumps. This was quite soon after both had made dramatic appearances in what is now known as the first reality TV series: PBS' award winning "An American Family".Flourishing in the New York club scene in the late '70s, Lance and Kristian became obsessed with the New York Dolls and lead to Kristian drawing the infamous "Bendover Girl" which was included as an insert in the Doll's first LP.While still performing as Mumps, Lance and Kristian subsequently appeared in a show called "New Wave Vaudeville" , produced by Ann Magnuson, who was to prove a life-long collaborator with Kristian. Thus they met met the headliner Klaus Nomi, the eccentric legendary German counter-tenor mutant glam virtuoso visionary. Kristian approached Klaus Nomi about forming a band. Kristian's collaboration with Klaus included writing several songs for him, including "Total Eclipse."Kristian made his mark on rock and roll history as the first musical director for chamber pop singer Rufus Wainwright's touring band, has played keyboards and written songs for the atmospheric torch band Congo Norvell, has produced, toured with, and written songs for punk/cabaret singer Abby Travis, toured and recorded as keyboardist for El Vez, the Mexican Elvis all over the U.S., and toured for five years with and played on several albums with Kinks founder and lead guitarist Dave Davies. Kristian's third solo album, called & because it consists mainly of duets with other musicians (including Russell Mael of Sparks, Rufus Wainwright, Maria McKee, El Vez, Paul Reubens, Anna Waronker, Lydia Lunch, Stew, and Ann Magnuson), was released to great critical acclaim. "Uncut" Magazine called it a "spectacular, operatic art rock power-pop album." Aquarian Weekly called it a "flawlessly crafted, ornately embellished pop opera," and the L.A. Weekly said "& is the record that every fan of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Kinks and great songcraft in general has been pining for. Frighteningly Excellent!"As for where this multifaceted singer/songwriter, musician, poet and artist will be headed next, it's a safe prediction that he has a surprise or two in store.

Matt North spent his 20's living and working in LA, writing screenplays, starring opposite James Woods in 2000's Dirty Pictures, and was a guest on Curb Your Enthusiasm. He also became a in-demand session drummer, working with Maria McKee, Peter Case, Blondie Chaplin of the Beach Boys, and others. Eventually, North relocated to Nashville and began working on his own songs. We first talked back in 2017 for his debut solo record, Above Ground Fools. Now comes Bullies in the Backyard, again recorded in his home studio with help from some of his Nashville friends. The album was recorded during a seven-year court battle with his local school system in Nashville over the treatment of his son, who has special needs. North seems to get inspiration for his songs from just about anywhere - from hiding things on the “Top of the Fridge,” to lamenting the high cost of sporting events in “Burial Grounds.” He also tells us how the pandemic actually helped him record his new album.

Back in the 90's, I discovered this great band led by James Hall. They were the opener for Maria McKee and I was a fan from the first note. The band's guitarist was Lynn Wright. But after two albums, they were done; and in the pre internet days, it wasn't so easy to stay on top of your favorite artists, especially if they hadn't quite broken into the mainstream. So I'm beyond happy to have Lynn on the podcast. To begin with, I try to sell him a farfisa organ after he just got home from a flight from Berlin. From there we talk about his musical career and his ever changing sound and style. He's very open about how the music industry almost broke him. He took a break from it after leaving James Hall to work for a children's book publisher. But a stint with the Reverend Vince Anderson brought back Lynn's love of music. Since then he's written his own music, recorded in a myriad of styles, including musique concrete. He has a lot of music he's preparing to release, even though COVID has been particularly harsh for him. Check out lynnwrightcomposer.com for new releases and info on where to see him play live. He's currently playing with The Royal Arctic Institute among other things. Follow Lynn on Instagram @lynnwr_ght. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Welcome to Part 2 of my song-for-song interpretation of Exile On Main St where I provide my explanations for each selection. I wanted to think about the album differently, as if its 18 songs were 18 individual ideas that influenced thousands of future bands in sometimes not so obvious ways. Instead of the Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, and White Stripes, we get You Am I, Wilco, and Maria McKee.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pantsfucious)
I spent over three years writing and editing Don't Call It Nothing: The Lost History of '90s Roots, Rap & Rock 'n' Roll and the book is now available to you for the low, low cost of free! The book is part autobiography, part biography, part social history, and all music history. It's an excellent reference tool for the best American music of the decade, largely driven underground in favor of terrible grunge, emo, Britpop, nu metal, and rap rock. And as a reward (punishment?) for finishing his damn book, LD created a song-for-song interpretation of Exile On Main St. 18 songs that individually match the aesthetic of the 18 songs on Exile. Oh, and to add a level of difficulty, most of the songs are from the 1990s — this makes sense given this podcast — and even the 3-4 that were recorded in the 2000s are by bands who began in the ‘90s. Enjoy!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pantsfucious)
Don't Call It Nothing returns to Pinkpop '93 to pay tribute to The Jayhawks and Bettie Serveert, two bands who should've been bigger, but America hates nice things. At least they left us a ton of great music, so tune in to get the bird.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pantsfucious)
This week we take a deep dive with James Hall. We hit on a lot of topics and a lot of bands like Mary My Hope, The James Hall Band, The Futura Bold, The Steady Wicked, and The Ladies Of. As always, we find out how he got his start in the music business. But we also find out a lot more. Like how the record labels had a hard time figuring out what to do with him and his band, placing them on tours with bands as diverse as Maria McKee followed immediately by Rage Against The Machine. But matches like those helped him look at music in a different way. Both Hurricane Katrina and starting a family had profound effects on James and his music. He's grateful for everything that's happened; good, bad, and otherwise. He's discovered an interesting outlet for his music in yoga classes. And while James admits to never having sold insurance, he does do work for Books For Africa. Check out jameshall.com for music and links to his social accounts. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Youth (Martin Glover) Youth is most famous for being the bass player in Killing Joke. He left the band in 1982, and soon after founded his own commercially orientated dub funk band Brilliant, which recorded one album in 1986 before later disbanding. In 1989, Youth and Alex Paterson started the WAU! Mr. Modo label. Their early releases were industrial techno dubs and heavy sound system dubs from artists such as Napthali, Manasseh, Bim Sherman and Jah Warrior. In the early nineties, Youth formed techno and house music duo Blue Pearl together with American singer Durga McBroom. They scored a handful of hit singles including their blue vinyl debut "Naked in the Rain", which reached No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart and was also a No. 5 dance hit in the U.S. in 1990. It was followed by "Little Brother" and "(Can You) Feel the Passion". An album, Naked, was also released. In 1994, Youth rejoined Killing Joke and their album Pandemonium was released on his Butterfly Recordings label, as was the 1996 follow-up, Democracy. Youth's Butterfly Records label has produced artists such as Take That, Wet Wet Wet, Tom Jones, the Orb, System 7, Maria McKee and Heather Nova. Youth was the co-producer of the Verve's Urban Hymns and Dolores O'Riordan's 'Are You Listening?' He has also worked, produced and remixed for bands including Kate Bush, Guns N' Roses, Primal Scream, Embrace, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Gaudi, Art of Noise, Crowded House, Zoe, P.M. Dawn, Yazoo, Erasure, U2, Bananarama, INXS, James and Suns of Arqa. RockPopandRoll / Episode 12 • A legendary – maybe the most legendary Australian rocker - who couldn’t break through in the US• An influential Cowpunk band that had big names push them • A rock band from the United Kingdom that had millions of fans and only one American sorta hit. This week on RockPopandRoll, our show is: "3 Underrated, Under the Radar Rock Bands that Never Hit the Top 40" Host Rob Nichols, a radio vet and longtime music writer, revisits rock and roll and pop music from the playlist of the decade of the 80s The Alarm Originally a punk band formed in Wales, The Alarm played with U2 in 1981 while they were still gigging with three acoustic guitars. In December 1982, they played four shows with U2 with Bono joining them on stage. In 1983, the Alarm went on their first tour of the U.S., supporting U2 on the War Tour. The Alarm's highest charting single in Britain was 1983's "Sixty Eight Guns", which reached number 17 in the UK Singles Chart. The Strength album brought them into the top 40 of the US Billboard 200 album chart for the first time and they got some rock radio play in America with the single "Rain in the Summertime". Bowie producer Tony Visconti helped them to their biggest rock his with "Sold Me Down the River" They sold more than five million albums worldwide. But no US Top 40 hits. They sounded like U2. Maybe, in retrospect, too much like U2. Jimmy Barnes Cold Chisel was an Australian band that became a great live band, and the biggest band in Australia for a time. Barnes went solo in 1984, and released a song "Working Class Man" in 1985 in the U.S., written by Journey’s Jonathan Cain, and got his first small taste of American love. He had a rock radio hit with the great “Good Times”, with INXS for Lost Boys soundtrack and then went on to accumulate nine Australian number-one studio albums and lots of hit singles including "Too Much Ain't Enough Love", which peaked at No. 1 in Australia. Barnes was inducted into Australian music hall of fame for his solo career and with Cold Chisel. He is still making music today, just not as an American music star. Lone Justice Lone Justice had its chance - and the right people helping out - but for some reason never really made it. Lead singer Maria McKee had the chops and the music was written and produced by superstars. But the punk-roots-rock-pop sound just never did it for them until their influence was figured in years later. Their self-titled debut in 1985, followed by a tour in support of U2, got them noticed, but gave them no hits. The single, “Ways to Be Wicked”, was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell while “Sweet, Sweet Baby” was written by Little Steven and Benmont Tench. The second album, “Shelter”, had two singles co-written with Steve Van Zandt. Still, no chart love. They broke up, but had an influence on the alt-country movement that came a decade later. Lone Justice had all the potential in the world, but ended up more of a cautionary tale. They had a charismatic lead singer with Maria McKee, a big time producer in Jimmy Iovine, the backing of a major label and contributions from Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Little Steven, and many more. The problem is none of these people knew what to do with their hybrid of classic country and punk leaving Lone Justice to fall as soon as they rose. Founder Ryan Hedgecock tells his story passionately and compellingly and you really come away with a unique view of the rock machinery. 1964. aastal Los Angeleses sündinud Maria kirjutas oma esimese hittloo juba 18-aastasena, kuid loomingulise eneseleidmise protsess osutus tema jaoks keeruliseks. Seda ju looming tavaliselt ongi. Üks oli kindel - Maria jättis ennast täiesti teadlikult popstaaride rambivalgusest välja.

K.D. Lang is Canadian pop and country singer known for hits such as "Constant Craving" and "Miss Chatelaine" from her Grammy award-winning and multi-platinum album "Ingénue ." She actually came on my radar in 1989 riding high on the "cowpunk" trend of the late 80's that included BoDeans and Lone Justice. For me, that label wasn't really fitting for her style as she really was a classic country crooner. The comparisons between K.D. Lang and Patsy Cline were well deserved and "Pullin' Back the Reins" remains one of my all-time favorites. Her rendition was not only stirring but heartfelt, that mesmerized at the same time. If there ever was any doubt to this woman's talent — this performance was proof to the contrary. K.D. Lang's induction into the Diva Hall of Fame represents all the singles that were remixed by her label in various iterations (save "Constant Craving," which is a an edit of the original). It is with great pleasure to include one of our own into the Diva Hall of Fame as Miss K.D. Lang takes her rightful place among the many talented woman that have filled up this ever-expanding series. I don't know how K.D. feels about her music being remixed but we adore this woman and it's our way of showing our gratitude sharing her talent with the rest of the world. I cannot think of a better person to represent the LGBTQ+ community. We love you. Album: K.D. Lang | The Diva Series Genre: House Music, Circuit Tribal House Year: 2020 Total Time: 01:29:14 1. Soraya & Jeff speak to David Nolte about his time as a member of The Last, Wednesday Week, Lucky, Vena Cava, Descendents, his production work with these bands as well as David Gray, The Jigsaw Seen, and his experience playing with Wondermints, Maria McKee, Dave Davies (of The Kinks), and even Micky Dolenz.
Into October of 1990 and we've hit upon an album that Krister used to love and remembers very fondly. Will it be as good as he remembers? Dave doesn't really give a shit one way or the other as this sort of early 90s indie passed him right by and at quite some distance. We discuss Tim Burgess' bizarre lyrics, the use of Hammond organs in music generally, and how embarrassing it would be to sustain an injury in a fight at a Status Quo concert. We also get the chance to play and talk about the likes of Maria McKee, MC Hammer and, god help us all, Scooter. All of the songs we talk about are in our weekly playlist as usual, listen along with us here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL011playlist. Thanks heavens for 'Thanks Brother', the magnificent musical project from Róisín O and John Broe at the helm and featuring Dec and Riggs. The guys popped in for a chat and two live tracks that genuinely blow away the Muireann O'Connell show today. The guys told Muireann how, in true irish fashion they blagged their way in to the Google Christmas party and ended up using the footage for a video for the new single, 'We Caught It' (check it out below) They also absolutely sent us into the stratosphere with a cover of a stone cold 'sing in the shower' anthem from Maria McKee that featured on the soundtrack to Days Of Thunder (Top Gun in cars) Muireann is always on the blag for free band merch! Huge Thanks to @ThanksBrother_ who lit up our lunchtime with two stunning live tracks on @MuireannO_C show today (Also Muireann is delira cos she got merched up with a band tee!) pic.twitter.com/iEBmUULLmh — Today FM (@TodayFM) February 4, 2019 Here is the Google HQ inspired video for their latest single:
Matt North has done a little bit of everything. In the L.A. Comedy scene, he opened for the likes of Marc Maron, Louis CK and Chris Rock. As a screenwriter, he did Best Western, which won multiple awards, yet has never been produced. As an actor, he starred alongside Jason Alexander in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, yet was written out of the script after one episode after Alexander left. As a session drummer, both in Los Angeles and Nashville, he’s worked with Maria McKee, Jay Bennett, Peter Case and Mink Stole.Over the last few years, North has taught himself guitar and piano and has just issued his first album, Above Ground Fools - ten songs all written by North. We touch on the twists and turns of his varied career, including what got him playing drums in the first place, and the inspiration behind songs like "Cronkite and Cosell" and "I Sold it All."
The world has problems, the men of The Spoon have solutions! Some of these solutions may appear to merely be needlessly elaborate long cons which serve no purpose other than our own amusement, but to paraphrase the great Sledge Hammer: trust us, we know what we're doing. Plus vomiting scenes, coyote scams, padawan braids, 9/11 protest songs, the return of Sharknado, the best worst segue ever, and a new round of spoon feeding. Music by Maria McKee, Throttle Back Sparky, and Gear Daddies.
Lone Justice were mid-Eighties pioneers. Blending elements of country, punk & rock, the band, led by fiery vocalist Maria McKee, gained a reputation for their incendiary live shows. Although praised by critics, the band never received commercial success, and broke up in 1989. Yet, over the following years, the group has been cited as a major influence by many bands. Now comes This is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983, a collection of 12 early recordings the band made before signing with a major label. Icon Fetch talks with original Lone Justice bassist Marvin Etzioni, who has kept these tapes in his garage for years. He tells us the story of how he joined the band and the circumstances that led to these fantastic recordings, made available for the first time.
I interview a bona fide rock star on the Crizzlecast today! I make a call to the West Coast to talk to Maria Mckee, the former frontlady for the country rock band Lone Justice. It turns out she's also a big movie nerd. We talk about all of that, along with working with Quentin Tarantino, hooking up with Robbie Robertson and collaborating with her husband on their latest project, the movie After thr Triumph of Your Birth. I gotta say this one went shockingly well. So, for all you fans of her and her music, you're welcome!
