Everyone knows that couple...everytime you go on holiday, they seem to get into a fight about SOMETHING. Then everyone's walking on eggshells, trying not to be awkward, not picking sides, just wanting to enjoy their nice vacation, but instead having to deal with someone else's drama. That seems to be a continuing theme with Paul McCartney and Jane Asher on vacation, only when those fights happen, Paul tends to wander off and pen classic songs, like "For No One." It's a strikingly mature and bold song, featuring only Paul and Ringo, buoyed by a brilliant melody and progression, and a top notch McCartney vocal. It's like the sad ending to the story that began with "She Loves You," addressing YOU, the listener...where it used to be that she loves you, now, she no longer needs you. Brutal, but beautiful. Returning to the show to discuss this tune is our friend Dr. Duncan Driver! You may have heard him on our "Eight Days A Week" episode a while back, or maybe you've heard him as a contributor to One Sweet Dream. He joins us from the future, or Canberra (listen to how badly Jonathan butchers that in the intro!), to discuss Paul's headspace in 66 when he writes this song, his ascension as an artist, and this classic Macca tune. If you'd like to hear more of Duncan's thoughts on "For No One," check out the writings he did on it, "Three Perspectives on 'For No One'" here, here and here. What do you think about "For No One" at #80? Too high? Too low? Let us know in the comments on Facebook, Instagram, or find us now on Bluesky! Og her 15 år senere fylder ”The Fab Four” stadigvæk rigtig meget for Vigga. On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we talk about overwork and burnout. If your employer has you turning enough hours that you are seemingly working 8 days a week, that is one thing. If you're doing it because you love money, that is quite another. The latter is ok, while the former will quickly remove any passion you have for the industry. Overwork can lead to a ton of bad things, so it is important to draw boundaries between your personal life and professional lives. Sometimes that looks like leaving at exactly 5:01, sometimes it is not working on your family's cars. Overwork can make you important where you work, but if it comes at the expense of personal relationships that can be short lived. Burnout is something that, in this industry in particular, happens the minute the passion is gone. Also Uncle Jimmy talks auto repair karma in a way that makes way more sense than it probably should and the universal nature of the french fry under the seat. This episode is distributed by The Wrenching Network. Whether you're a technician, a mechanic, or someone who just loves the car scene, The Wrenching Network is a place that you have to check out. They have all sorts of great content, gear, and snacks to keep you turning wrenches in whatever capacity you do it. Also if you see us over there, make sure you say hi and leave a comment with what you think about the episode!
It's Christmas! Or at least it was when this episode dropped which makes this our Christmas episode! That means we kick off the episode with a discussion about Beatles music that gets used in Christmas adverts - is it effective? Or just blatant manipulation? Or something else? Then it's time to move on to our main feature, Eight Days A Week. Does the song stack up against other Beatles No 1's in America? Does the song deserve the description "slight"? And does the Ron Howard movie of the same name justify itself in the pantheon of Beatles documentaries? When the four lovable lads from Liverpool sat down to pen this little ditty, they were certainly having a laugh about how many days there are in a week. But THIS week, Andrew and Dan have the LAST laugh as they dig deep in the painstaking writing and recording of this boppy mid-60s tune that marked a transitionary period in the Beatles' career.

The break's over friends! We've missed you all, but we're tanned, rested, and ready to rank! Well, actually we're still quite pasty (Jonathan especially), we're still always tired, but we're definitely ready to get back to the business of ranking! To say the Beatles were working hard in 1964 is more than an understatement. Tours, bbc sessions, t.v. appearances, movies, recording sessions, sometimes multiple of these things in the same day...yeah, it was a lot. So in this situation, one would maybe be excused to not turn out their BEST work. Of course, even the Beatles' not-best-work is still classic, and that's what Eight Days A Week is. It's the first time the band ever took a song to the studio that was incomplete, such was the pace at which they needed to churn out material. It's got all the catchiness and melody of a classic Beatles tune, but it maybe KIIIIINDA feels a bit tossed off as well, in that "too big to fail" way. It's the intersection of the band's need to maintain chart dominance while also starting to experiment in studio and stretch their legs as artists. It's a great tune, for sure, but is it also an early sign to a new direction? A new direction apart? Joining us this week is Dr. Duncan Driver, who, if you listen to other Beatle podcasts, you've no doubt heard (he's frequently featured on One Sweet Dream, among others) wax eloquently about the Fabs. We're delighted to finally have him on our show, and we touch on all kinds of points, everything from the pop song firsts, Beatles by numbers, Big Mac and Crossroads songs, and Duncan flips the script on our rapid fire questions! Fact: Since 2016, there's no such thing as an authorized “live Beatles record” without Opie's involvement. Sure, “At The Hollywood Bowl” was originally released lo-fi style in 1977, back when Richie Cunningham was chillin' with Potzie, Mrs. C, and the increasingly insane Chachi. But it wasn't until Apple slapped Ron Howard's name on a brand new cover (yuck) that this long-deleted title finally appeared on CD in dramatically improved sound, as a slightly forced tie-in with the “Eight Days A Week” film. So yeah, it was ol' Winthrop (#TheMusicMan #GaryIndiana) who made a Splash with this Gung Ho re-release that's Far and Away the only official live Beatles record. In this episode, Tony and T.J. dive into Giles Martin's stunning remix, on the 45th anniversary of George Martin's original presentation of the legendary '64 and '65 Hollywood Bowl shows. Along the way, these Beautiful Minds Backdraft themselves into other pertinent topics, like: ☎️ Did the Nerk Twins inspire the Jerk Twins, later known as the Jerky Twins, and ultimately known as G.O.A.T. comedy act The Jerky Boys?

The fall of 1964 was an outrageously busy time for The Beatles. In the midst of live appearances and constant touring, they went into the studio to record Beatles For Sale. Relying on some of their favorite covers to fill out the album, John and Paul were still able to write a few gems - including the song Eight Days A Week. In its brilliant simplicity, Eight Days A Week is classic Beatle rocker. Billy and Jay of course discuss the writing and recording process and they uncover some great deep dive items as well! It's the first pop song with what feature? What Beatles hit surprisingly replaced this song as a single? Did the boys like this song? And just WHO uttered the phrase I've been working eight days a week? So much to uncover in this one! Hold me (clap/clap), love me (clap/clap). HOLD me (clap/clap), LOVE me (clap/clap), enjoy Eight Days A Week!

In its brilliant simplicity, Eight Days A Week is classic Beatle rocker.Billy and Jay of course discuss the writing and recording process and they uncover some great deep dive items as well! It's the first pop song with what feature? What Beatles hit surprisingly replaced this song as a single? Did the boys like this song? And just WHO uttered the phrase I've been working eight days a week? So much to uncover in this one! Hold me (clap/clap), love me (clap/clap). HOLD me (clap/clap), LOVE me (clap/clap), enjoy Eight Days A Week!www.billymcguigan.com/beatlessongpodcast
Eight days, three massive wins. Mike Carpenter reflects on the week that was for the Illini, capped off by a 1-seed clincher in Columbus. Later, he catches up with Sean Harrington about this Illinois team heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
The guys take a side road to talk about the beginnings of The Beatles, mainly into the life of a young John Lennon with the movie "Nowhere Boy" and the Beatles documentary "Eight Days a Week".

As amigas indicaram a canção e o silêncio do depoimento diz tudo: Beatles é só ouvir e sentir.
John Lennon incluyó originalmente “Grow Old With Me” en su álbum Milk And Honey. A Tribute To John Lennon. Come Together:America Salutes The Beatles publicado hace 25 años. “I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party” perteneció originalmente al álbum Beatles For Sale, editado en 1964. The Ultimate Mixes. Escuchar audio

The boys are joined by Emmy nominated Alan G Parker, a British music journalist and promoter, turned author and director. Alan's impressive body of work consists of 16 books, and 15 films. More on Alan: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2569672/ Parker is best known for his extensive research into the life and death of Sid Vicious, bassist for the English punk band the Sex Pistols. Parker has written three books about Sid Vicious, and has a very unique insight having been close to Sid's mother Anne. In October 1977 Sid's girlfriend Nancy Spungen was stabbed and killed in New York. Sid's previous convictions together with his name “Vicious” led police to believe this was an “open and shut” case presuming Sid, guilty of her murder. Sid died of a heroin overdose in February 1979, without being formally convicted of Nancy's murder. In this extensive look at Sid's life, and the circumstances around Nancy's death, Alan and the boys attempt to uncover the truth by examining the facts and personalities surrounding that fateful night in the Big Apple. Alan's latest documentary It Was Fifty Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper & Beyond picks up on the band as they end their grueling tour schedule in August 1966 (coincidentally following on from Ron Howard s Eight Days A Week) to return to the studio to record this landmark album https://www.amazon.com/Was-Fifty-Years-Today-Beatles/dp/B073LJYVNC Join in the conversation with Mickey and Willy, in the official chatroom https://thisstrange.life/#discord https://thisstrange.life/ https://twitter.com/strangelifethis https://www.instagram.com/strangelifethis/

It occurred to us, as it must have with everyone else, that the release of Eight Days A Week really called for an accompanying soundtrack, or at least a parallel collection of music spanning the whole of The Beatles’ documented live performing career. Into that void Robert and Richard have stepped, with their proposed collection of live performances ranging from the Star Club to Candlestick. Necessarily, some of the extant audio is rough, but not unlistenable and certainly essential to understanding what kind of live musicians these guys were (and how they did it to an audience). Locales represented here include Hamburg – Stockholm – London – New York City – Melbourne – Blackpool – Paris – Houston – Tokyo – San Francisco. Find Richard’s books here. Find Robert’s books here. As a supplement to our ninth episode, Graeme Burk is joined by Petra Mayer (sans Rob) to review Ron Howard's recent documentary on the Beatles' touring years Eight Days a Week. Graeme and Petra talk about the comprehensive quality of the film (and how it is very slighly analagous to the New York Yankees!) and touch on the suprising aspects (the effects Beatlemania had on youth culture, the brief intersection with the civil rights movement), marvel at the amazing archival finds and discuss how it stands up with other Beatles documentaries.

From child star to Academy Award winning director, Ron Howard has always made it his business to entertain. And entertain us he has - from A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13 and Frost / Nixon to his most recent offerings - the Beatles documentary Eight Days A Week and Dan Brown thriller Inferno. But whereas Edith's previous guest Andrea Arnold prefers to accompany her films with source music, Ron is a particular fan of score, and has, accordingly, collaborated with some of the finest cinematic composers of recent times, including James Horner, Thomas Newman, John Williams and Hans Zimmer. We'll hear plenty more about the director's admiration for that venerable bunch during the course of our conversation, as well as excerpts from the work they produced for his movies. Ron also reflects on his time as an actor, and has a most amusing anecdote about Michael Jackson!

This is the first in a regular Beatles only podcast - yeah, let's see how soon that plan falls by the wayside - marking the most Beatle-y of months with the documentary 'Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years' , the remastered 'Live at The Hollywood Bowl' and NOT the announcement of the expected release of Paul McCartney's 'Flowers In The Dirt' super deluxe box set. We're all sick of experts so Beatle ubernerds DFB, DoctorJ & StevenC do what they do the rest of the time anyway. - the film : who is it for, what is it for and should be give it what for? - the album : better, longer but still unessential - Flowers In The Dirt - Macca's best of the 80's and rebirth of his career? The act that you've known for all these years - we hope we passed the audition.

THE NOT OLD BETTER SHOW MOVIE REVIEW & INTERVIEW: "EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, THE TOURING YEARS," FROM RON HOWARD... Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about the Beatles, Ron Howard has uncovered new things about the Fab Four for the upcoming documentary, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week -- The Touring Years. Welcome to The Not Old Better Show Movie Review and Interview: Ron Howard, and his new film, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years. The film traces John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr from 1962-1966 during the years that they became a phenomenon. Ron Howard was a kid at the time, playing Opie on The Andy Griffith Show, and he (like everyone else in our Not Old Better audience) found himself swept up in Beatlemania. Howard watched as the Beatles debuted on Ed Sullivan, toured the US, and eventually decided touring wasn't the band wanted to do. The Beatles, whether performing live, or on their recordings, never held anything back. They had no reason to. But, The Beatles, due to increasing pressure of touring, had many reasons to cease live concert performances. While we can still see “The Cute One” who's out touring now, and of course Ringo is still with us, but for those of us not able to ever see them together live, this film in its audio brilliance, along with mesmerizing video footage recreates that magic, and it's guaranteed to raise a big smile on your face and well worth the price of admission. Enjoy!
