Riding Shotgun With Charlie #220 Matthias Quellenberg San Diego Firearms Academy   In 2022, I went to GunProm, hosted by San Diego Gun Owners. It was a huge event with over 750 attendees, the biggest 2A dinner I've attended. I was there with John Petrolino and we didn't really know many folks. We were put at the table with Matthais. We talked all night and exchanged contact info. The next day, he messaged me via Instagram and said he's seen the show, but didn't put it together after seeing me. The next week, Petrolinio messages me and says he's been messaging Matthias. I asked who and he replied “The German.” The name stuck.    In 2024, GRPC was held in San Diego, where he lives. We were able to film a show at the end of GRPC. Everyone was talking about “the wall” and I thought it was some sort of Pink Floyd tribute. Alas, it was the border wall. When he asked where we were driving, I replied “the wall.” We had to make sure we didn't cross into Mexico. I don't have a passport. He was packing.    Matthias grew up in Germany and served in the army. That was his first exposure to shooting and firearms. If it was a choice and an option for the citizens, he would have been a gun owner. But it's very elitist in Germany. The first gun he got to shoot was a Walther P1, the predecessor to the P38. He did boot camp, specialized training, then some office work, and ended up in the Ministry of Defense, similar to the Pentagon here. Then he became a boot camp instructor.    He met an American woman and they had a long distance relationship. Eventually, he made it to Boston. After they got married, he was able to get a green card and he applied for a License To Carry right away. They moved to California and settled in San Francisco. He found out there were only 2 carry permits issued in the city when he got there. In the same time, Fresno County issued over 6,000 permits.    Then life brought them to San Diego. Doing some research, he found out you needed to list your guns and serial numbers on your license and you could only have three guns on that carry license. He looked for an attorney who may want to pursue suing the state about this and ended up talking with the lawyers from the Peruta case. The lawyers thought they may be able to pair the cases, but it didn't fit their strategy.    Back in 2020 while he was Ubering, he would talk with his riders and gun owning came up. They were looking for guidance and opinions. Realizing that there could be a market, he became an NRA certified instructor and started San Diego Firearms School.    We got into talking about teaching gun classes. He teaches a couple classes a month. The next step for him is to get certified by the sheriff's department to be an instructor. In California, you have to take a short test to get the firearm safety certificate, which you need to purchase a firearm. Then you have to do a shooting qualification to be able to take the 16 hour course needed for the CCW permit.     Matthais won tickets to the GunProm back in 2022. That's when he started to see that there are so many more people involved in firearms and the bigger gun community in general. He's good friends with Desi Bergman (RSWC #217) and they both do lots for San Diego County Gun Owners. He even presented for one of their seminars.    I had a great time with Matthais. He's a great guy and he's out there busting his tail to make things happen. This episode is about getting over someone we can't seem to get over. Today's caller, Matthais, is hung up on someone he can't seem to get over but, as usual, it has to do with something much deeper. Often, it is the relationships that don't work out that teach us the most.   [For show notes, go here: Christinehassler.com/episode401]   As children, we are naturally intimate, but if our parents can't be intimate back we start to shut down. Because intimacy feels scary and unfamiliar. And, even though everyone wants to be loved, they push love away because love has hurt them in the past. So, when love comes to us we push it away because it is unfamiliar.   An avoidant attachment relationship pattern is when someone loves us and we push them away. It's because love feels unfamiliar and scary. Love feels like it hurts because as children, we naturally love our parents. When we don't feel that love back from our parents in the way we as children give love, it's very disorienting and it can make us not trust love. So, when someone wants to love us, it feels unfamiliar and unsafe.   Whereas, when there is someone distant and aloof with us and maybe love bombs us, it feels great in the beginning but then the great feeling fades. Or, the person will give us ultimatums we have to fulfill and make us chase them. It makes us yearn for something familiar to us, and we often confuse the feeling with love because it is familiar.   When we are hung up on someone, we think we are missing them but what we are missing is something we need to embody within ourselves. When we heal our inner child, we begin to choose the love we truly desire, not a feeling that triggers us.   Consider/Ask Yourself: Is there someone that you've broken up with or that broke up with you but you just can't seem to let them go? Did you have a parent that wasn't there for you in the way that you truly desired? Do you relate to having an avoidant attachment style? Did you have a parent that parentified you or even made you their spouse and you didn't get to be a kid?   Matthais's Question: He had a painful breakup that he can't seem to get over. He would like guidance on how to get over it and move forward.   Matthais's Key Insights and Ahas: He hasn't felt emotional pain in his life before like he did with this breakup. He is having difficulty connecting with new people. He was very much in love. The breakup was abrupt. His ex triggered something deep inside of him. He has some wounding in his past about his looks. His ex said he triggered her childhood wounding. He has an avoidant attachment style. His parents divorced when he was 15 and has struggled with it for 25 years. His mother was caring but he has been the only man in his mother's life. He may be choosing partners who mirror his relationship with his father. He hasn't experienced true intimacy. He felt his dad didn't want him and his mother parentified him. He is attracted to controlling women.   How to Get Over It and On With It: Discontinue any communication with his ex. Let her go. When he thinks of his ex, tell himself that it wasn't a healthy love and that real love is safe. Work on his inner child by exploring the self-guided Inner Child Workshop. Emma hosts Dan Canon, civil rights lawyer and professor at the University of Louisville, to discuss his recent book Pleading Out: How Plea Bargaining Creates a Permanent Criminal Class. Emma begins by running through the arrest of an Iranian citizen for planning an extrajudicial assassination attempt against John Bolton, extrajudicial assassination expert, and Rudy Giuliani assures the public that Donald Trump is actually happier and more secure than ever. Then she's joined by Professor Dan Canon as he walks Emma through the history of the plea bargain – today the most common conclusion to a criminal case (97% end in guilty pleas) – and how we came to put so much discretion in the hands of judicial cops (prosecutors) to center our judicial system around efficiency. First, Professor Canon brings us back to the inception of the plea bargain in 1830s Massachusetts, with the industrial revolution seeing a massive influx of white male suffrage in the working class, resulting in the political elite immediately launching a concerted attack on the labor movement via massive and incredibly vague criminal statutes like vagrancy and drunk and disorderly, thus needing to prosecute these individuals with efficiency the Massachusetts legislature legitimized the plea bargain. This saw a rapid shift in the US judicial system, with plea bargains going from illegal and frowned upon, to making up well over 80% of cases in Massachusetts by 1880, and continuing to effectively null the concept of a “jury of one's peers” well before those “peers” could include women or people of color. Next, Dan and Emma walk through how the US criminal system developed around the plea bargain over the next century, with federal involvement in criminal justice expanding massively during the prohibition era, and continuing in the wake of the 21st Amendment as the US government turned to the beginnings of the war on drugs, only for Nixon and Reagan to massively accelerate it a half-century later, all requiring US prosecutors to charge such mass numbers of people at an incredibly rapid speed, regardless of the context and content of their arrests. Wrapping up, they reflect on the role of union busting in creating the plea bargain, looking at how the US' carceral state works to create this permanent criminal underclass, separated from society and isolated as individuals, before concluding with a discussion on the necessity of rebuilding our system as a whole, rather than reforming it bit by bit.
