We open the show on Oz Pearlman — the mentalist who's been showing up on every podcast and somehow keeps reading minds for a living. Adam just caught him on Modern Wisdom, where Pearlman walked the host through his exact internal thought process — what he picked, what he second-guessed, what he settled on — like he had a pipeline straight into the man's head. Adam now rearranges his schedule whenever Oz pops up on a screen. So consider this a formal invitation: Oz, come drink whiskey with us. Tell us our favorite bourbon. We'll pour the Glencairns.Speaking of — this week we're sipping High West Campfire. A blend of straight rye, straight bourbon, and blended malt scotch. Yes, scotch. Peat smoke gives way to orange zest, English toffee, toasted brioche, salted caramel, leather, dark chocolate. It works. Then Adam gives an update on baby Mary. New listeners — Adam's daughter was born very early with a heart condition and a long list of complications. She's been in the NICU since birth. This past weekend was her actual due date, and after a long string of holding-the-line W's, she's turned a meaningful corner. Off the paralytic. Better oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate. Swelling coming down. Still a long road — likely nine to twelve more months in the NICU. Adam and Lady Haylee are deeply grateful. Keep them in your prayers. Both of them.Quick note from Dave: Good Shepherd Sunday in Tulsa. The pastor handed out cards and asked every man in the pews to write down the name of a young man who'd make a good priest. A thousand men doing that work together. Tulsa's per-capita priest count is already top five in the country — and we still need more. Then we get into it. The King in the Tabernacle. If the Eucharist is just a symbol, the Catholic Church is a 2,000-year deception. Flannery O'Connor's line — to hell with it — is the right one. But we don't believe it's a symbol. We believe what Christ said. Body, blood, soul, and divinity. The continuation of the Incarnation, until the end of the age.David's been reading The Real Presence by St. Peter Julian Eymard (Cor Jesu Press). Eymard is the patron of Eucharistic adoration — one homily in him, gave it for a lifetime. And one chapter lays out a battle plan for how to actually spend a holy hour. Not just sit there. Spend it.The four ends of worship — ACTS: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication. Eymard breaks the hour into four fifteen-minute sections. First fifteen: adoration. You don't walk into the royal court making demands. You fall on your knees and salute the King. Second fifteen: thanksgiving — for yourself, your family, the world. Thank Him for instituting the Eucharist at all. (Most of us forget that one.) Third fifteen: reparation. Stand in the gap. For your sins, for the world's, especially for the sacrileges against the Eucharist itself. Fourth fifteen: petition. Now you can ask. Ask large graces. Ask for the triumph of His Church. By the time you get there, you're asking for the right things. We talk about the difference between knowing the Eucharist is Christ and acting like it. You don't accidentally get a six-pack at 40. You don't accidentally get holy, either. We're body-soul composites — what we do with our bodies forms our souls. That's why we genuflect. Dress for Mass. Kneel after Communion. St. Charbel had two modes: preparing to receive, or thanking God for having received. The bar he set is the right one.We close with Eymard's image of the guard of honor. Jesus has made Himself vulnerable in the host. Heart pierced. Defenseless. Waiting on His men to show up and adore Him. That's the work. Guard duty. Get to adoration. Change your life.Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDOz Pearlman the mentalist — and Adam's open invitation to come on the showBaby Mary's update: off the paralytic, turning a corner after months in the NICUWhy prayer for Lady Haylee matters as much as prayer for MaryGood Shepherd Sunday in Tulsa — a thousand men writing down names of future priestsWhy the Eucharist is the reason to be Catholic — and why "to hell with it" is the right answer if it's a symbolSt. Peter Julian Eymard, the patron of Eucharistic adoration, and his book The Real PresenceWhy the real presence is the continuation of the IncarnationThe actual battle plan for a holy hour: ACTS in fifteen-minute sectionsWhy thanksgiving in adoration is the most perfect act of loveReparation — standing in the gap for sacrileges against the EucharistWhy your petitions get sharper after you've adored, thanked, and made reparationKnowing the Eucharist is Christ vs. actually acting like itWhy you're not going to accidentally get holy any more than you're going to accidentally get a six-pack at 40Body-soul composites: how genuflection, posture, and dress shape the interior lifeSt. Charbel's two modes — preparing to receive Communion, or thanking God for having receivedLady Pamela stopping at every chapel she passed — and why that 60 seconds was worth more than Adam realizedDon't let the perfect be the enemy of the excellentThe guard of honor: Jesus exposing Himself in the host, depending on His men to defend and adore HimBourbon of the week: High West Campfire — the rare rye/bourbon/scotch blendREFERENCED IN THIS EPISODEBooks:The Real Presence by St. Peter Julian Eymard (Cor Jesu Press)Saints:St. Peter Julian EymardSt. CharbelMother Angelica (and her new shoes at adoration)People & previous guests:Joey Spencer — on Christ becoming the fruit hanging on a treeJeff Cavins — on talking to Jesus like He's actually thereFlannery O'Connor / Dorothy Day — "If it's a symbol, to hell with it"Oz Pearlman (mentalist, Modern Wisdom podcast)Lady Haylee MinihanLady Pamela NilesConcepts & references:The four ends of worship: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication (ACTS)The National Eucharistic CongressGood Shepherd SundayEucharistic adorationThe continuation of the IncarnationSubstance and accidents (Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics of the Eucharist)SPONSOR BLOCKSponsor: Select International Tours — selectinternationaltours.comWhen Adam and Dave decided to lead their first pilgrimage, the same name kept coming up: Select International Tours. Rob Reiner reportedly told friends he was "petrified" of his own son. Michele Reiner had allegedly grown increasingly worried about Nick's deteriorating mental state. They had money, connections, access to the best treatment in the world — and none of it mattered.Because in California, families cannot force treatment on an adult who refuses it. They can't initiate conservatorships. They can't compel long-term psychiatric care. All they can do is call 911, watch their loved one get held for 72 hours, and wait for them to be released. This episode traces how we got here. In 1967, California passed the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, ending indefinite involuntary commitment and creating strict criteria for psychiatric holds. The law was a response to real abuses — families locking away "inconvenient" relatives, horrific conditions in state hospitals, patients warehoused for decades without treatment. But the community mental health centers that were supposed to replace the hospitals were never built. The funding was gutted. And within one year of the law taking effect, mentally ill people entering California's criminal justice system doubled.Today, fewer than 1,500 Californians are on LPS conservatorships. A 2020 audit found that in LA County, nearly 10,000 people had been placed on at least 10 psychiatric holds — but only 1 in 16 ever resulted in long-term care. The 72-hour hold became a revolving door. And families like the Reiners were left with impossible choices: abandon your sick child to the streets, or become their untrained caregiver and hope today isn't the day it all falls apart. We dismantled a flawed system and called the rubble progress. After a strong start to the 2025-26 season, Houston's defensive rating is now in the bottom half of the NBA for December. Not coincidentally, the Rockets (16-8) currently have a losing record (3-4) for the month.Hosted by Ben DuBose and Dave Hardisty, our latest “ClutchFans Live” postgame show breaks down all the frustrations after the Rockets blew a 25-point lead in the second half versus the lowly Pelicans (6-22). Topics include the clear defensive regression; struggles to involve Kevin Durant in crunch-time possessions; and an odd downturn in the usage of Reed Sheppard.

Here's what no one wants to say out loud: Rob and Michele Reiner probably knew they were in danger. Friends say Michele had been confiding for months that Nick's mental health was deteriorating. Neighbors say there had been violent incidents before. The night before their deaths, Nick got into a screaming argument with his father at a Christmas party. Everyone saw the signs. No one could legally do anything about it. In the United States, you cannot force a competent adult into treatment. You cannot commit someone because you believe they're dangerous. You have to wait until the danger becomes imminent — which usually means you have to wait until someone gets hurt. Rob and Michele Reiner lived inside that impossible gap for eighteen years. And then the gap killed them. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins us to examine the systemic failures that leave families like the Reiners without options. We discuss what parents can actually do legally when an adult child is spiraling — and where their authority ends. We look at why the threshold for involuntary commitment is so high that families often recognize danger years before the law will act. We ask hard questions about whether the rehab industry itself can make certain patients worse. And we talk honestly about what would need to change for cases like this to have different outcomes. This isn't about assigning blame to a grieving family. It's about understanding why our system forces parents to choose between respecting autonomy and protecting themselves — and why that choice shouldn't exist. #RobReiner #MentalHealthLaw #TrueCrime #SystemicFailure #InvoluntaryCommitment #FamilyViolence #ShavaunScott #MentalHealthReform #AddictionCrisis #CrimePsychology Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Send us a textEver notice how a tiny flicker of defensiveness can take over a whole room? We start with a simple family Bible study and follow that thread into the heart of spiritual practice: dropping the need to be right, relaxing the body, and letting forgiveness do what debate can't. From there, we unpack projection with clear, grounded examples—approval seeking with a parent, the urge to “save” someone at our own expense, even a playful moment with a thermometer reporting whatever the mind expects.I share why true guidance arrives when we stop striving and start relaxing, and how “spiritual family” isn't a club but a felt alignment that lifts everyone involved. We look at sickness and pain as symbols without causes in the world, and we reframe prayer: not “send peace over there,” but “help me see truly right here.” When we withdraw causes from the world, fear loosens its roots. Miracles become involuntary recognitions that none of the story's content is ultimately true, and actions flow naturally—sometimes offering help, sometimes setting clean boundaries—without guilt or self-sacrifice.We also wade into charged territory—politics, punishment, even the question of forgiving the unforgivable—to show how judgment boomerangs as self-attack. “Turn the other cheek” becomes a demonstration of invulnerability, not submission. The throughline is authorship: you're not at the mercy of events; you're meeting your own projection and choosing again. That choice is simple and immediate: defend the illusion, or rest in the love that never left. If you're ready to trade striving for serenity, pity for joyful giving, and argument for true communion, this conversation offers a practical path back to peace. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who could use a breath of calm, and leave a review to help others find the show. Illinois football loses 42-25 to Washington in a game featuring yet another terrible performance from Aaron Henry's defense. Mike Carpenter reacts during the fourth quarter (just after the D gave up a 3rd and 18 - yes, a 3rd and 18) and watched as the Huskies sliced and diced their way down the rain-soaked field with ease. Now 5-3, Bret Bielema's team has to quickly regroup as Rutgers heads into town, while questions about the viability of Henry as defensive coordinator will only get louder.

In the heart of every shadow that plagues our communities, from the silent cries of the trafficked to the silent battles of addiction, We Fight Monsters stands as a beacon of hope and defiance. Born from the shared experiences of those who've faced the abyss and emerged to tell the tale, our organization is a testament to the power of resilience and the strength of unity. We are the ones who navigate the night to bring back the lost, who stand in the face of evil not with weapons, but with the unwavering belief in redemption and recovery. Ben is a daddy to eight (sometimes ten), grandparent to one, humanitarian, fighter of evil, bringer of hope, formerly addicted, alcoholic and homeless. He's also the owner of BlackRifle Co, a data intelligence and digital media agency not to be confused with the coffee company of similar name, and co-founder of two non-profits—We Fight Monsters and Flanders Field—that help people in some of the worst places in America and the world. Ben loves sharing that his wife Jess can drive, load, and fire a M18 Hellcat, a WWII tank destroyer. He’s also the only crackhead ever invited to CIA headquarters. When they’re not in South Memphis helping others rebuild their lives after addiction, Ben and Jess can be found in rural Georgia where they live with their family.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ryan, Chris, and James break down the Dallas Stars' defensive crisis as injuries to key players like Miro Heiskanen, Nils Lundkvist, and Ilya Lyubushkin leave the blue line in shambles. Should the Stars ride it out with Capobianco and Petrovic, or is it time to make a trade? The crew debates potential moves, from depth pickups to the pipe dream of landing Jacob Trouba. They also spotlight the Stars' post-Christmas surge, with Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston leading the charge offensively. Plus, the "Who Cares?" segment gets personal (and hilarious) as the guys debate their favorite celebrities sharing their first names.
