Here’s bunch of tunes I purchased on Beatport and then mixed immediately last night.A friend, Eva, sent me a clip of Funky Green Dogs’ classic ‘Reach For Me’ via WhatsApp. I went to play it only realised I didn’t have it... So, off to Beatport, where, of course, I was distracted by new releases too.Part two of the story is much more mundane. We were supposed to be hosting a Christmas party for 70 people last night but had to cancel the day before because I did my back in. Typical. Stuck at home feeling grouchy, Eva’s intervention and a little music shopping inspired me to reach for the headphones.This session is the result, mixed live in one take, with ‘Reach For Me’ at the heart of it. I only made one small edit to shorten Rhythm Masters’ take on ‘Been A Long Time’ - their version being a bit too dark compared to the other grooves on offer here. Everything else is disco and funky house with a few remixes of familiar faves thrown in the shopping bag for good measure. The basic design makes me think they’re at the discount end of the audio spectrum, but the retro font and 70s vibe seems fitting for this session.

Pete gave me a handful of old tapes from circa 1991 when our gang used to frequent The No 1 Club in Manchester. Sadly I missed out on those No 1 days, arriving in Manc just after, but I still have lots of the tunes. My task was to recreate these hissy, crappy tapes for our friend Lisa's 50th birthday. There were a lot of tunes I could not get hold of, despite Shazamming and Googling lyrics, but this session covers all the tracks I could get together, in the order they were originally mixed by Jake and Tim on those tapes. It’s been a fun project, requiring me to dig a little deeper than my usual retro sets and has given a fresh airing to tracks I don’t often play that much. I had to re-created a couple of mash ups and I also replicated the spooky, Pink Floyd-sampling intro from one of Jake's mixes. It seems that even six months off work doesn’t give me enough of a window to fill the gaping abyss left by mixes waiting to be sorted. Enough gap-filling, time for something contemporary. This update is built solely from 2015 tunes, mostly from August / September, and so predominantly tracks I’ve been caning whilst traveling. It’s probably as close as you’ll get to I’d be playing out right now if I hadn’t officially hung up my headphones a few years back.It’s an upfront house session, mainly influenced by Jane and Heath as we were staying with them in Melbourne when I sorted the tracklist. I have fond memories being driven around while banging through their awesome tech and deep house playlists. Seeing as I have a bit of spare time on my hands (it’s raining here in Fiji), I’ve edited the feck out of this session. As a result it moves along pretty quickly. I don’t usually edit this heavily - it can makes mixes feel a bit too much like a Ministry compilation - but on reflection I quite like the results when verses, or over-lengthy breakdowns, are cut. It keeps the vibe consistent and continuous. And given that my last mix was nearly three hours long (who’s going to listen all the way through that?) this means I can squeeze nineteen tracks into a CD-friendly 80 minutes. I haven’t edited like this since Minidisc days.Stand-out tracks: Dusky’s Skin Deep is my tune of the summer. The Hayden James opener is from the start of the year but is an earworm I can’t dislodge. It’s great to see Full Intention back on form this year, ditto Roisin Murphy. There’s the usual re-rubs of familiar classics in the mix and even a junglist breakbeak twist on Jamie XX’s Loud Places before we end with my favourite remix of Holding On, the first outing from Disclosure’s second album. In June 2015, Lithuanian DJ/producer, Marijus Adomaitis, AKA Ten Walls or Mario Basanov, published a particularly vile Facebook post about gay people. Whilst I believe everyone has the right to free speech, this was a pre-determined concrete view that rubs against the origins of club culture, a culture he milks and profits from for a living. His ill-informed, niave statements led to much discontent being voiced in music and social media. He was rightly pulled from many festival performances but it’s too early to tell how much it has hurt his career. He will probably soon pop under a new producer pseudonym anyway.The trouble is, I loved his work under the ‘Mario Basanov’ monica. I actively sought out and bought the tunes and he’s had more than a fair share of airtime in our gay household. Now, I find it difficult to separate the man from the music, In 2015, three/four years after release, his bottom-heavy, dreamy deep house signature has been mimicked and replicated, dating it quickly. Maybe that’s why he started releasing under ‘Ten Walls’??Whatever, it’s time to draw a line under these great tunes, and ‘finish off Masanov’. I had a number of these future disco playlists bubbling away between 2010-2012. This session pulls together favourites from that era, and clocking in at over two and a half hours, it’s a pretty chunky one. To dial-up the pink and stamp some queer over his music, we open with a snatch from John Waters’ 1969 movie, Mondo Trasho. Disclosure team up with AlunaGeorge and prove they are still the men-of-the-moment... and FCL’s It’s You finally gets a release on Defected after last summer’s first batch of 12”s have been selling for hundreds of ££s on Discogs - expect a pack of remixes soon, in the meantime I have paired it with the stabbing B-line of LouLou’s Hum Hum. It kinda works, you be the judge. It’s been a long time / I shouldn’t have left you / without a dope beat to step to...I can’t believe it’s two and a half years since my last post. I have over 20 playlists of tunes ready to be mixed, but the weight of the task led to a sort of paralysis... I get a bunch of tunes ready but never get the time to blend them. Then more tunes come along, or ones I have chosen wear out a little, so the tracklist loses its shine... then three weeks pass and it seems even more like yesterday’s news.So, fast-forward to today and I find myself sorting music for a party. Time to clear this DJ constipation with eight awesome tracks mixed live, perfect for slamming on if you’re getting ready to go out over the festive season. First up, The blissful Benediction. This summer anthem’s been rolling around my head non-stop for the past month. I wake up and go to sleep with ‘keep on riding on and on’ as my soundtrack. Frank B gives us a phat old skool re-take of the classic ‘Chain Of Fools’ - I love the fact he cut out the chorus, and just you wait for the bass drop.The Jessie Ware and TEED tracks are festival favourites but the crescendo is definitely the Maxxi Soundsystem transformation of a classic disco Scandal track, with a bassline to end all basslines.Oh, and there’s an Adele song. Here’s a hour of indie-funk and nu disco for butt-wigglin’ through the Easter break. Dont’ be put off if you were hoping for some house tunes.... you’ll love this :-) It’s one of two sessions I’ve had on the backburner for a while, hence the tunes being cherry-picked from the past year or so. This mix is quite upbeat, there’s another to come that’s deeper and more spaced out.We start with Beth Ditto’s reflective vocal on Cruel Intentions, cut up here by The Edit Master himself, Greg Wilson. LCD Soundsystem take us into orbit with Padded Cell’s funk-chugging take on 45:33. Other highlights include a spacey disco groove by Curses!, a Crazy P track dropped by Unabombers at Big Chill 09, electronic disco from Lifelike, Chris Menace and even the Pet Shop Boys beefed up by Trentemøller.And of course, two iPod favourites of last month: the best track from New Young Pony Club’s slightly disappointing second album, and the Talking-Heads-on-M-Kat ripper, High Pressure Days by The Units, a top track I discovered on a Mixmag covermount CD mixed by Mylo. I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs.We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days.All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics.Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 so I’ll also upload this to the Classic Archive podcast. Here’s the latest ‘update’ instalment. The tunes are mainly from July with a couple of stragglers from May/June, plus the usual rediscoveries thrown in for good measure. Giom’s mix of As Darkness Falls has been in the box a lot this summer. It was on a CD I bought whilst shooting in LA in January but only found a few weeks back, hence it’s cropping up on a few Noël mixes. The Wawa track is an old favourite that’s resurfaced since Defected reissued the Fluential catalogue earlier this year. I had my lower wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I had my upper ones out a few years ago and thought this would be a similar experience: bit of discomfort and back to work in a couple of days. I’m a big fan of the blissed-out minimal trance* tech sound from the likes of Deadmau5 and Glenn Morrison, whose tunes have been appearing on this podcast for the past couple of years. Admittedly, it feels like these producers are something of one-trick ponies, but I’m loving it and thought I’d bang ‘em together on one mix before the sound gets too old and over-played.*When I say ‘trance’, I don’t mean the Ferry Corsten / Paul Van Dyke / Mitsubishi-chomping / Gatecrasher ‘99 anthems... Although painted from the same palette, the tracks in this session are stripped down and laid back. More reminiscent of early ‘90s trance, think along the lines of Age Of Love, System 7, Uncle Bob et al. Besides, the mix opens on more of a chill-tech tip before really beginning to sparkle in the second half.This session is not all about spanking new tunes as I’ve pulled faves from the last two years. Matt made his DJ debut at Driver Bar warming up the crowd with a special two hour playlist of soul, funk, broken beats, deep house, and general groove-bound chunky stuff.Occasionally Matt challenges me to mix some of his tunes, which is never easy given the mix of genres and varying range of BPMs. My Bank Holiday mission lay in blending his playlist from 19 April, and I’m pleased to say that it’s turned out pretty well. Great summer iPod food!Even though it made things more difficult, I stayed pretty true to M’s original running order. I cheated in a couple of places with cuts and simpler segues - BPM geeks won’t blame me given that things vary between 92 and 133. The ‘Update’ formula is pretty easy to grasp: I get a bag of new/recent tunes and spin them into a session. As ever, it’s been difficult to find the time to lay down some tunes - the last mixes I did were in April ;-/ So, time to reflect on what’s been missed. I’m putting together some ‘best of 07’ mixes, each covering a few genres of house music. First up, part 1 is a selection of laid-back sexy lounging beats. The mix opens with a cover of a Tears For Fears classic, which was actually released early 2006 but it came to my attention in April 07 at a party after a TV shoot in Cape Town. I love this version, but fear it’s just slightly on the wrong side of the cheese knife... Other highlights for me are Miguel Migs’ Mesmerized and the tracks by M-SWIFT and Kerri Chandler. I played a gig for French fashions house, Chloé, at Home House in London.Chloé employed me as dj and music consultant for the evening, following distinct briefs for three parts of the night: before the show, the show itself, and the after party.The attached audio is a short 20 minute mix from the fashion show. I’m uploading this on a very cold February Saturday - I’ve been playing it to bring a little sunshine through my speakers and thought I should share it with you.This mix is a collection of vocal house anthems from the 90s. I made it for a summer party at “The Gay Church” (aka Kat and Chris’ apartment in a converted vicarage). Chrissie is an old mate from my days at Kiss 100. Back in November 2000, she was particularly fond of a tune by Kojak that I’d blagged from one of the programming guys, so I built a mix around it for her birthday. The session is filled out with various commercial party anthems and other big tunes from 2000. Most of these tracks also appear in the 2001 Spaced Odyssey mix for the following month’s NYE party, which is probably why I have not uploaded this before now, but this mix came first and no doubt inspired that soundtrack. It appears I never noted the original tracklist for this mix, but all of the tracks were easy to recognise apart from No 4... I can’t really remember the story behind this mix which was recorded when I lived in Chorlton, Manchester. I think I wanted to pull together a selection of the different loops and grooves and riffs that had guided my taste through the recent years. I’m uploading this in December 2009. I’ve stumbled upon a box of old mix tapes from the mid 90s and this one’s a corker, full of main room peak time vocal anthems. According to my scribbles on the inlay card (pictures attached to the file) I originally mixed this for Tony Mellor after a lost weekend at The Fridge in London. It may have been Pride weekend when I travelled down with Chris Buckley, Mark & Darren. This is one of my first mixes recorded in a studio. I’d just moved into Matt’s in Stetford and he kept getting burgled so I stored my decks at work. This was in the days when Piccadilly Radio was based in Piccadilly Plaza (Manchester). The commercial production studio was separate from the rest of Key103 and I was often working weekends uploading commericals... so of course it wasn’t long before I’d plugged my Technics into the desk.Anthony (‘Subbo’) and I would have a few beers, get stoned out the back and play tunes.With this session I learnt how digital editing could allow you to perfect a mix, restructuring songs as I wanted them, and also how prestigious it felt to have a mix burnt to CD - few people burnt CDs in 1995 as it was far too expensive. I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs.We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days.All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics.Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 but as I only mixed this today, you’ll also find it on my Latest Mixes podcast.
