This week, Drewby and Yergy head south to New Hampshire to discuss the case of Kimberly Cates, a mother from Mont Vernon who was killed in her bed after a group of teenage boys agreed to take “a test to make sure that we had the balls to do whatever.” That test was the brutal assault of a mother and daughter, with mom being hacked at 32 times.  Support Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachine PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachine Join Our Facebook Group: https://t.co/DeSZIIMgXs?amp=1 Instagram: miserymachinepodcast Twitter: misery_podcast Discord: https://discord.gg/kCCzjZM #themiserymachine #podcast #truecrime Source Material: https://www.smith-heald.com/obituaries/Kimberly-L-Cates?obId=674824  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uElR1G4Crcg  https://www.facebook.com/share/Z3389mKXHrkTbYFJ/?mibextid=LQQJ4d  https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/local-news/2013/07/31/new-documents-about-murderer-steven-spader-8217s-sentencing-show-a-family-struggling-to-control-a-teenager-8217s-actions/#:~:text=Spader%20had%20an%20otherwise%20normal,told%20him%20they%20loved%20him.  https://murderpedia.org/male.S/images/spader-steven/new-hampshire-v-steven-spader.pdf  https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/gribble-murder-trial-jury-reaches-verdict/  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fp6CO_o3yhE  https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/nh-supreme-court/1630611.html  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCB_5qyfic  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCB_5qyfic  https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/local-news/2013/07/31/new-documents-about-murderer-steven-spader-8217s-sentencing-show-a-family-struggling-to-control-a-teenager-8217s-actions/  https://eu.seacoastonline.com https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/i-m-the-most-sick-and-twisted-person-you-ll-ever-meet-murderer-steven-spader-who-hacked-kimberly-cates-to-death-with-machete-insults-victim-s-family-with-apology-8584711.html  https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/local-news/2014/05/23/convicted-murderer-spader-injured-in-prison-altercation/#:~:text=Steven%20Spader%2C%20now%2024%2C%20sustained,of%20Corrections%20spokesman%20Jeff%20Lyons.  https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4-Trow-Rd-Mont-Vernon-NH-03057/120662256_zpid/  https://www.bostonherald.com/2009/10/07/4-small-town-teens-held-in-random-attack/  https://www.necn.com/news/local/_necn__two_more_men_sentenced_for_roles_in_deadly_nh_home_invasion_necn/183519/  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/four-teens-charged-in-small-town-machete-murder-of-mom/  https://eu.seacoastonline.com/story/news/local/portsmouth-herald/2010/11/05/coroner-cates-alive-for-32/51388043007/  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b6D73NdAllQ  https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/wbna34705825  https://eu.fosters.com/story/news/local/2010/01/05/documents-unsealed-in-mont-vernon/51750127007/  https://www.bostonherald.com/2010/07/19/man-accused-in-mont-vernon-murder-lashes-out-at-public/amp/  https://eu.seacoastonline.com/story/news/2015/05/12/n-h-man-paroled-in/34574510007/#:~:text=CONCORD%2C%20N.H.%20(AP)%20—,the%20Nashua%20River%20on%20Oct.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rdLHgdm8FIE  https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/local-news/2011/06/29/lynch-signs-cates-law/  https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/local-news/2013/07/31/new-documents-about-murderer-steven-spader-8217s-sentencing-show-a-family-struggling-to-control-a-teenager-8217s-actions/  https://youtu.be/4-ZBZGv7Wp4?feature=shared  https://www.cabinet.com/news/hb-news/2010/01/08/court-documents-detail-murder-plot/  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/four-teens-charged-in-small-town-machete-murder-of-mom/  https://youtu.be/9PLw4EflRXs?feature=shared  http://www.kimcatesfund.org

The 10-day event will be held in the charming town in North Queensland in 2024, with thousands of athletes from around the world expected to take part.   The World Triathlon Multisport Championships will see duathlon, long distance triathlon, long distance aquabike, aquathlon, cross triathlon and cross duathlon world championship races organized together during a week-long festival. This ground-breaking event now allows for athletes to compete in various multisport races, as opposed to electing only one each season. And participants can even vie for the Multisport Legend, a title reserved for those who compete in four events.   World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado said that the organisation was looking forward to heading to Townsville in 2024. “We are absolutely delighted to return to Queensland after such a long time without events in Australia, this time for one of our flagship events: the Multisport World Championships in Townsville,” she said. “Over the last years, Australia has become synonymous of triathlon on its multiple variations, and has proved to be a magnificent host for the triathlon family, playing host to some truly memorable performances and great champions, staging races the results of which have helped shape the path of entire seasons.   “Being able to hold these important races in one fantastic location and all under the banner of one festival has proved to be hugely beneficial for athletes, spectators and media alike, allowing the global World Triathlon family the opportunity to gather together for a true celebration of the sport, and we are extremely excited to head to Townsville in 2024,” she said.   Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Multisport World Championships cemented Townsville's place as the sporting events capital of northern Australia. “I'm looking forward to seeing the Multisport World Championships come to life here in the North, bringing together thousands of elite and age-group athletes,” Mr Stewart said. “The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support the Multisport World Championships because we understand the importance of events to local jobs and Townsville's visitor economy.   “This event is great news for North Queensland tourism operators, accommodation and transport providers, and local retailers,” he said. “It's also a golden opportunity for competitors and spectators to build extra time into their stay to explore Townsville's amazing tourism and Indigenous cultural experiences, world-class dining, the reef, and breathtaking tropical islands and rainforests.”   Mayor Jenny Hill said the Townsville City Council and the wider community was looking forward to welcoming the Multisport World Championships to the city.   “Hosting this event is a real coup of Townsville and further reinforces our city's reputation as the events capital of Northern Australia,” Cr Hill said. “With our beautiful natural environment and ideal weather, I can think of no better place for the world's best athletes to test their skills and endurance.   “The championships will also provide a platform to promote our city and region to the world, which will boost our tourism industry for years to come.”   Miles Stewart OAM OLY, Triathlon Australia CEO, welcomed news that the event would be held in Townsville in 2024. “This is fantastic news for triathlon and multisport in Australia, and for our members who have been anticipating, and looking forward to racing and officiating at these world championships on home soil,” said Stewart. “We're expecting our largest Australian representative team on record for Townsville 2024 with seven championships on the schedule from cross-triathlon, aquathlon to long course.   “The festival format will mean athletes can race across multiple disciplines on multiple days, which is really exciting, and will be a great boost for Australian events with athletes racing to qualify for a spot on the team from 2023,” he said. “Australia has some of the best triathlon events in the world, and we can't wait to welcome the world's best to Townsville, and continue to build on our legacy of hosting world-class events.   Official dates for the Townsville Multisport World Championships will be announced in the near future.   The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the World Triathlon calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada), a successful event that was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019. After the event being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, in 2021 the races were held in multiple locations (Almere, El Anillo and Aviles). In 2022 the event will travel to Romania and Slovakia, and will return to the original format of all races in one location during a 10-day festival in Ibiza (Spain) in 2023 and Townsville (Australia) in 2024.   https://www.townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au/events/product-events/?world-triathlon-multisport--championship-59e59f8fc18adcc63caa2e39#:~:text=01%20Jan%202024%20%2D%2005%20Oct,age%20group%20and%20para%2Dtriathletes.     USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2023 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS CALENDAR COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today unveiled the dates and locations for the 2023 Age Group,  Club, and High School State Championships, a robust calendar of local, USA Triathlon sanctioned events that give adult and high school athletes around the country the opportunity to race for state titles and qualify for USA Triathlon Nationals, the annual event that requires qualification and brings together the best U.S. amateur triathletes for the Sprint- and Olympic-Distance National Championships.   “It's never too early to plan your race season, and as athletes look ahead to the 2023 calendar, I encourage all triathletes, from the experienced to the newbie, to race in your State Championship next year,” said Victoria Brumfield, USA Triathlon CEO. “Local races in our communities exemplify the spirit and fun of our sport and each State Championship is organized by our dedicated, passionate local race directors who produce first-class events.”   State Championships are open to all triathletes, as no qualification is required to compete. State Championships include a non-drafting Sprint- and Olympic-distance race for age group athletes, as well as a High School State Championship division in the Sprint-distance race.   High school athletes — experienced and newcomers alike — and high school triathlon clubs are encouraged to race their High School State Championship. All high school athletes who finish a High School State Championship race will automatically qualify for the Sprint-Distance National Championships at USA Triathlon Nationals, scheduled for Aug. 4-6 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   New for 2023, all state championships will also serve as the Club State Championships for age group and high school clubs. Club members around the country are encouraged to race at their local state championship to earn the designation of top club in the state and win the club state champion banner from USA Triathlon!   Many state championships in 2023 will also offer separate events as part of the Splash and Dash Youth Aquathlon (swim-run) series geared towards encouraging youth participation in multisport. Splash and Dash events offer a low barrier to entry for children and their parents with a 100 or 200-meter swim and a 1 km or 2 km run. As a swim-run event, there is no bike portion, and no bike is required. Finishers of events in the Splash and Dash series will receive unique finisher medal from USA Triathlon. Check with your local state championship on details of their Splash and Dash. The full 2023 Splash and Dash series schedule will be released in the coming weeks.   Adult athletes racing at State Championships have increased odds to qualify for Sprint- and Olympic-Distance National Championships at USA Triathlon Nationals. State Championships qualify the top 35 percent, or top five finishers in each age group (whichever is greater) for the 2023 or 2024 Sprint and Olympic-Distance Nationals. Normal qualification criteria at any USA Triathlon-sanctioned triathlon of any distance is the top two, or 15 percent, of an athlete's age group (whichever is greater).   State Championships held after June 1, 2023 will qualify athletes for both the 2023 and 2024 USA Triathlon Nationals. 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals is scheduled for Aug. 4-6 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.     What's New in the 303:   Local Tris - Upcoming Race Price Increases 6/10 - Boulder 70.3 Price Increase 2/12 6/24 - Lake to Lake Price Increase 2/16 Olympic INDIVIDUAL ENTRY Dec. 11 – Feb. 15 — $115 Feb. 16 – April 30 — $125 May 1 – June 23 — $135   Sprint INDIVIDUAL ENTRY Dec. 11 – Feb. 15 — $85 Feb. 16 – April 30 — $95 May 1 – June 23 — $100   7/9 - Peak Olympic Triathlon Individual: $120 until 1/1 $130 until 4/1, $140 until 7/9 at midnight   Tri Boulder July 22nd, 2023 Sprint Tri $110.00 Olympic Tri $135.00     Video of the week:   Jens Voigt at the Old Man Winter Bike Rally Feb 6 2023     Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 10 and October 17, 2022.  This revised episode from October 2015 is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. MUSIC – ~12 sec – instrumental. In this episode, we feature music about an annual turning point that inspires humans but shuts down trees.  Have a listen for about 40 seconds. MUSIC – 40 sec – Lyrics: “Leaves turn green and then grow bright to every color, every type, and finally in the wind let go, to fall and paint the earth below.  Roots so deep, the trunk so high, her arms reached up into the sky; through her veins all colors run from everywhere to everyone.” You've been listening to part of “Colors,” by John McCutcheon, on his 1998 album “Four Seasons: Autumnsongs,” from Rounder Records.  Prior to moving to Atlanta in 2006, Wisconsin native John McCutcheon was a long-time resident of Charlottesville, Virginia.  The song's full lyrics describe a growing appreciation of the variety of fall leaf colors and their power to inspire and invigorate people.  But for deciduous trees—that is, those that lose all of their leaves annually—autumn colors and falling leaves are signs of internal changes leading to the relative inactivityof winter dormancy.  Reduced water movement is one of the key changes.  Leaf drop follows the sealing off of a leaf's veins from the stem vessels that carry water and dissolved materials to and from the leaf during the growing season.  During that growing season, evaporation of water from leaves—called transpiration—and the cohesion between water molecules are the main driving forces pulling water up from roots through woody stems to the leaves.  This water movement provides tree cells the vital fluid needed for the cells' structures and biochemical reactions that allow survival and growth.  That growth stops during winter dormancy, and water movement is much reduced. After leaf fall, left behind on winter twigs are characteristic marks called leaf scars containing bundle scars showing the previous growing season's points of fluid transfer between stems and leaves.  Above or beside the leaf scars are overwintering buds, harboring the tissues that will become next year's leaves and colors. Thanks to John McCutcheon and Appalseed Productions for permission to use this week's music, and we close with about 20 more seconds of “Colors.” MUSIC – ~23 sec – instrumental. In September of 2020, 38 year old Holly Courtier and her daughter Kailey Chambers went to Zion National Park to go hiking. She was apparently looking to go on a brief spiritual pilgrimage, and was looking to disconnect from everything for a while. On October 6th, she left her phone, didn't tell anyone where exactly she was going to hike, parked her car in Springdale, and then took a 1:30 pm private shuttle to the Grotto area. This was the last time she was seen for almost 2 weeks. 12 days later, she was rescued from a site near the Virgin River - but this is where the story gets weird and we're left asking questions like “how did she even survive this?” Stay safe out there. Episode 8 with Ray Melick, Kevin Scarbinsky and host Jon Solomon. Georgia head coach Mark Richt looks on from the sidelines during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against LSU in Athens, Ga., Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009. LSU won 20-13. (AP Photo/John Bazemore) >> It's clear that Florida and Alabama have separated themselves in the SEC and appear headed for another showdown in Atlanta. Nick Saban made it sound like after the Ole Miss game that Alabama's biggest test will be remaining focused each week. Is he right?  >> Also, the question has come up this week about whether Alabama and Florida could play a great SEC championship game as undefeated teams and then play again in the national championship game. Harris Poll voter Ray Melick weighs in. >> Alabama this week released a written response it provided in the NCAA textbook case. The response revealed the NCAA Committee on Infractions described Alabama's infractions history with words like "appalling" and "abysmal" and "serial repeat violator." Has Alabama gotten the message that the NCAA never forgets, but that Alabama is making sure not to repeat the past? >> Kentucky comes to Auburn this week, and this is not a good Kentucky team. Is this the biggest game of the young Gene Chizik era because of how Auburn responds to last week? >> Mark Richt in year nine is under fire. Georgia is 3-3 for the first time since 1996 and just got humiliated by Tennessee. The offense has problems. The defense is a mess. Is Richt going to survive this long-term, and how crazy is it that we're even asking this question about a coach who's won at least 10 games in six of the past seven seasons? Why has Julio Jones' production been down? Gene Chizik faces Bobby Petrino. Did Auburn get the right coordinator from Tommy Tuberville's old staff? Does Tuberville have a motive in picking Auburn to beat Arkansas by three touchdowns? Tigers travel to Knoxville for a challenging game but remain outside the polls. Episode 6 of the Birmingham News Sports Podcast, hosted by Jon Solomon. He is joined by columnists Ray Melick and Kevin Scarbinsky to discuss: Auburn, which is 4-0 through four home games but not ranked. There are 17 undefeated Division I-A teams and only five are not ranked: Auburn, South Florida, Texas A&M, UCLA and Wisconsin. Also, Auburn-Tennessee, an intriguing game in Knoxville this week No. 3 Alabama, which plays Kentucky this week. The Tide is rolling on offense and defense lately and thorougly shut down Arkansas last week. But in the process, Dont'a Hightower was lost for the season with a knee injury. Alabama played fine without him for three quarters. What impact could his absence have on the rest of the season? Tim Tebow's concussion suffered last week at Kentucky. It happened with Florida leading 31-7 and about four minutes left in the third quarter. Kevin wrote this week that Urban Meyer should have his own head examined for risking Tebow's health and Florida's national title defense by playing him when the game was out of hand.   Download: Birmingham News sports podcast, Oct. 1, 2009.mp3
