Sheila Dillon looks into claims that big food companies wield too much influence over government decisions and public health. The episode follows news from the youth-led campaign group BiteBack2030, which says its billboard campaign has been effectively silenced. The group recently organised a mock inquiry in Parliament, involving MPs, to share concerns about how junk food advertising and sponsorship are affecting the health of children in the UK.Sheila also hears from a group of protesters who marched to Downing Street this month, shouting the message “Fight Fake Food.” Organiser Rosalind Rathouse, from the Cookery School on Portland Street, says the public needs to know how the food they're eating is damaging their health. She is calling on everyone to learn to cook this summer. During the march, campaigners delivered a list of wishes to Downing Street, highlighting the changes they'd like to see in food policy. Also featured are Jennifer Richardson from The BMJ, which has been investigating the impact of commercial influence on children's health, and Cathy Cliff from the Soil Association, who submitted a Freedom of Information request to uncover the extent of food industry lobbying and its effect on government policy.Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Natalie Donovan

A letter signed by two of El Salvador's top finance officials also confirmed the state has not bought Bitcoin since February 2025. The revelation comes after El Salvador secured a $1.4 billion IMF loan, which required the government to scale back key parts of its Bitcoin policy, including ending tax payments in Bitcoin, phasing out the Chivo wallet, and making private sector acceptance voluntary. While Bukele continues to tout Bitcoin as part of El Salvador's identity, the disconnect between official actions and public messaging calls into question transparency and credibility. I can still remember my wife's excited phone call that day. She said, "Honey! The baby just turned over!" Hey! He was three months old; it was a big deal. It's hard to believe there was a time you couldn't turn yourself over. Can you imagine a time when you couldn't walk by yourself? You couldn't feed yourself? Well, we took pictures of all these steps toward independence as all of our kids took those steps. There was a big cause for getting that old Super 8 movie camera out and getting the slide film out (come on, there was no iPhone then! You get it?). "Oh, look, he's crawling for the first time! He's walking for the first time! Take pictures! It's the first day they ever went to school." And then it happened, all three of our children were grown and out of the house, independent adults. But that's normal, right? I mean, the more you grow, the more independent you become. Right? Not necessarily. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Freedom of Total Dependency." Now, our word for today from the Word of God comes from Acts 9. I'm going to begin reading at verse 7 - it's the dramatic conversion of that persecutor of Christians, Saul of Tarsus. What a life-transforming day! Saul has just been knocked off his horse by this light from heaven; he knows now that it is the Lord he's dealing with, and verse 7 says, "The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything." Now, Saul of Tarsus is an intelligent, gifted, passionate leader. He felt sufficient, strong. He's all grown up, right? Wrong. Saul's road to maturity begins the moment after his conversion when it says, "They led him by the hand." Isn't it interesting to see here that from the moment of Saul's rebirth, God drives him to a position of total dependency? Later in this chapter God refers to Saul as, "My chosen instrument. I have great plans for him." You know when those plans begin? With total dependency. The more a child grows the more independent they should become. The more a child of God grows the more dependent he should become. Usefulness to God begins with a heart breaking. God will do whatever it takes to show you that dependency is maturity when it comes to spiritual adulthood. In fact, He may be doing whatever it takes right now. Paul would have to learn humility and dependency throughout his life. The stronger you are, the more it takes for you to learn to depend. In 2 Corinthians 1 he talks about hardships that they'd suffered almost to the point of death. And he says the reason was, "That we might not rely on ourselves but on God." He had to learn it again. Now, 2 Corinthians 12 - he talks about his "thorn in the flesh that was given to him to 'keep me from being conceited.'" This strong, driven leader had to be humbled and broken, and then re-humbled and re-broken. You say, "What strong and driven person? Paul?" In this case, I mean me. It's the Master's way to bring His strong-willed child to the end of their ability to control the situation; to make that child of His, in a sense, blind to where they need to be led by the hand. Maybe you're there now. God wants to pry open that tightly clenched hand of yours, empty it of self, and fill it with His power. Maybe He's brought you to the edge. It's going to be total dependency or total defeat. Why don't you get you out of the way? Grow up to the point where you will let your Father feed you, let your Father carry you, let your Father lead you. You're never stronger than the moment you reach up a trembling, empty hand and say, "Father, lead me by the hand."
When it comes to money, most people are searching for two things: security and peace of mind. That's understandable—life is unpredictable, expenses arise, and markets swing. But what if true peace isn't found in your circumstances at all?Financial wisdom doesn't start with a budget or a savings plan. It begins with trust—specifically, trusting in the Lord. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”If you chase peace through your paycheck or portfolio, you'll always come up short. But when Christ is your foundation, you begin to see money in a new light—not as a source of peace, but as a tool to steward.Five Secrets to Financial Wisdom from God's Word1. Know Who Owns It All. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.” Everything belongs to God—your income, your retirement, even your ability to earn. That means we're not owners; we're stewards, entrusted with God's resources to manage faithfully.2. Spend With Purpose. Jesus asks in Luke 16:11, “If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” Spending should reflect God's priorities—giving, saving, living within your means, and investing in eternal impact.3. Avoid the Slavery of Debt. Proverbs 22:7 warns, “The borrower is slave to the lender.” Debt can limit your freedom to give and respond to God's calling. Wise stewards build margin and pursue freedom—not because debt is always wrong, but because freedom is better.4. Save With Perspective. Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” Saving isn't about hoarding; it's preparation for what God might have ahead. But remember: your security isn't in your savings—it's in the Savior.5. Give First, and Freely. 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us, “God loves a cheerful giver.” Generosity reflects God's heart. It breaks the grip of greed and aligns us with His Kingdom. When we give, we declare, “God, I trust You more than I trust this money.”Anchored in ChristFollowing these biblical principles won't guarantee worldly success. Even the most faithful stewards face trials. But when your foundation is Christ, you're anchored. Isaiah 33:6 says, “He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge.”So if you're looking for security or peace, don't start with a spreadsheet—start with surrender. Financial wisdom begins when you recognize that your Provider is also your Redeemer. And in Him, you have more than enough. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My deceased friend's estate is in probate, and he owned an LLC registered in another state. Thousands of people move in and out of Missouri's parole system every year. That includes Norman Brown, who was released in 2022 after serving 31 years in prison for a crime he committed at 15. Brown joins the MacArthur Justice Center's Amy Malinowski for a critical discussion of the state's parole system, its flaws and areas for improvement. The system is under scrutiny for improvements pending official recommendations from a “working group” created by an executive order issued this year by Gov. Mike Kehoe. We also hear from Terrell Robinson, who, in an interview from prison, describes the parole system as “draconian, cruel and severe.”
Send us fan responses! Ever wondered why some people never seem to win in court despite having strong cases? The answer lies in a hidden system of securitization that affects every aspect of our legal process—a system that Don Kilam fearlessly exposes in this eye-opening episode. From a luxurious LA penthouse with sweeping city views, Kilam pulls back the curtain on how courts actually function as sophisticated debt collection operations. He meticulously breaks down the bond system used by courts, explaining how bid bonds, performance bonds, and payment bonds create the financial framework that turns defendants into commodities. "Every time you put your signature on a piece of paper, you are creating a negotiable instrument," Kilam reveals, highlighting how our signatures become valuable commercial paper that gets monetized without our knowledge.Perhaps most shocking is Kilam's explanation of the prison-industrial complex's true nature. When defendants go into default judgment by failing to respond correctly to charges (which are actually commercial terms), these judgments are sold to reinsurance companies and eventually converted into mortgage-backed securities traded on international markets. Companies like Corrections Corporation of America make millions by contracting with federal prisons, creating a profit incentive for incarceration that few understand. But this episode isn't just about exposing problems—it offers solutions. Kalam provides specific strategies for winning in court by understanding and using this commercial framework to your advantage. He outlines exactly which government forms to file, how to make conditional acceptances, and why requesting "full settlement and closure of the account" can be more effective than traditional legal arguments. "You're the principal and the owner of the account," he emphasizes. "Tell them what to do."Want to master these powerful techniques and reclaim your sovereignty? "Whatever you can perceive—through the senses, through your mind, from any region of time—is only the play of the mind and time. Whatever you perceive, even your own self portrait, is only an image in consciousness. Nothing is permanent. If you can see that even your person and this world are phenomenal, then what are you that is perceiving it? If you can hear this and pursue this contemplation, it will be enough to set you free, and I will support you in it." Today, we're looking at Prime Minister Mark Carney's declaration that Canada will recognize a Palestinian state this September — pending conditions — following on the heels of similar announcements from France and the United Kingdom. Plus, President Trump's August 1 deadline for trade deals is just hours away. With the U.S. making deals with many other countries, Carney suggested there was a possibility negotiations with the Americans would extend beyond the deadline, meaning Canada may face steep tariffs. And finally, a judge in Ontario blocked Premier Doug Ford's plan to remove bike lanes in Toronto, arguing the lanes were protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Ever find yourself trapped in the paradox of success? You've built something impressive, yet somehow you're still grinding harder than ever. That's exactly where Heidi Hoium found herself seven years into running her thriving consultancy."Hard work doesn't need to equal grind," Heidi shares in our conversation. "Some of the hardest work we can do is to stop and think and to have white space." As an Enneagram 3 achiever who built Ironworks Consulting into a respected firm helping over 130 advisory businesses grow with clarity, Heidi's journey reveals the counterintuitive truth many high-performers miss: sometimes slowing down is the fastest route to meaningful growth. What makes Heidi's story particularly powerful is how she transformed her business without sacrificing results. In twelve years, she's only had one year that wasn't her "best year ever"—while implementing a four-day workweek and creating sacred "white space" every Monday for strategic thinking. She shares exactly how she made this transition, from quarterly personal retreats to building what she calls a "personal growth team" who challenged her limiting beliefs. For high-achieving business owners who secretly worry they've just created another version of the corporate grind they were trying to escape, this conversation offers something rare: a practical roadmap for doing things differently without losing your edge. We dig into the mindset shifts required, how to get comfortable with the discomfort of change, and why creating boundaries around your time might be the most important business decision you'll ever make.Ready to reimagine what success looks like on your own terms? This episode will show you how to build a thriving business that doesn't depend solely on you—giving you the freedom, flexibility and fulfillment you started your entrepreneurial journey to find. Subscribe now and join the conversation about elevating your achievement without sacrificing what matters most. In this podcast you will learn how:• Defining elite success as doing more with less while focusing on relationships• Identifying when your business has become "just another grind"• Why white space and reflection are crucial for high achievers• How to reimagine your business by breaking through limiting paradigms• Building a personal growth team to challenge your thinking• The power of quarterly getaways for vision and clarity• Implementing a four-day workweek without sacrificing results• Creating hard boundaries to protect your most valuable time• Becoming comfortable with discomfort during the change process• Reframing hard work as strategic thinking rather than constant busynessHighlights:0:00Hard Work Without the Grind3:30Defining Elite Success7:58Building Freedom Without Sacrificing Growth15:02Breaking the Busy Paradigm21:46Creating Vision Through White Space27:37Building Your Personal Growth Team31:09Four-Day Workweek and Elite BalanceInterested in 1:1 Coaching?Kristin partners with high-performing financial advisors, leaders, and business owners who are ready to lead with more clarity, focus, and intention.Clients often come to her with a strong vision—but they aren't sure how to close the gap between where they are now and where they want to go. Today on Can't Be Contained, I am lit up to welcome the radiant Erin Claire. She's a Human Design guide, teacher, and bestselling author of How To Be You. If you've ever wondered why you move through the world the way you do... If you feel burnt out even when your life looks “good” on paper... If you're craving more ease, clarity, and connection in your relationships... This episode is going to speak straight to your soul. Erin shares how discovering her design changed everything. The way she works. The way she parents. The way she partners. The way she honors her truth and protects her peace. We dive into what Human Design actually is. A wild and powerful blend of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra system. It sounds cosmic—and it is—but it's also so practical. Erin breaks it down in a way that's clear, grounded, and completely life-giving. This conversation is all about permission. Permission to stop performing. To stop overriding your instincts. To live and lead from who you really are. Human Design gives us a language for that kind of liberation. Inside the episode, we explore: ➤ The five Human Design types and what they reveal about your energy, decision-making, and flow ➤ The difference between shrinking and aligning (this is big) ➤ How understanding your design supports parenting, partnerships, and team leadership ➤ The art of honoring your ambition while still choosing rest ➤ Rituals for staying connected to your truth and avoiding burnout We also get real about what happens when you're out of alignment. Why rest feels so hard for high-achievers. And why learning to pause is one of the most radical forms of self-love. Whether you're brand new to Human Design or deep into your chart, this episode will remind you of your brilliance. Erin's wisdom is rich, embodied, and full of heart. This one is for you if: —You want more flow and less friction in your life —You're curious about how Human Design can deepen your relationships —You're tired of apologizing for your needs —You love practical tools wrapped in soulful truth Grab Erin's beautiful new book, check out your chart at humandesignblueprint.com, and let us know your type. Most people never reach their full potential, not due to lack of talent or opportunity, but because they are trapped by fear, doubt, and excuses. This episode is a powerful call to action, encouraging listeners to break free from these mental shackles and seize the life they were meant to live. Born from the belief that many visionary architects of the world are no smarter than the average person, it dismantles myths around intelligence and power, and advocates for action and self-belief. Taking control of one's destiny is not about waiting for the perfect moment, it's about courageously stepping forward and claiming your space in the world.

Following their moral compass, student activists at Columbia demanded an end to the genocide in Gaza and called for a ceasefire. The response? Intimidation, suspensions, wrongful arrests, and, in Mahmoud's case, being illegally detained by ICE and threats of deportation. How and why did the current student movement begin? What were the consequences of speaking out on Palestine? And what does the future hold for student activism and for Mahmoud himself? [14:56] Susie: “When you are in self-preservation, when you are in bracing for impact when you're living with elbows locked, you can't at once receive from God. You will not see goodness when it comes, you won't because your eyes are on the trauma.” Hear more about Susie's battle against life's curveballs when you tune in to the full episode. You can also check out Susie's first episode with us as a guest in Season 3 Episode 2.[19:01] The Recipe for VitalitySusie emphasizes that she has gained more in Christ and highlights the importance of thinking rightly about God to receive His blessings.Living in self-preservation prevents us from experiencing God's miracles and goodness; we must work on our hearts to receive His answers.Deep rest in purposeful faith is vital for soul replenishment and engaging in our faith restores peace.[26:53] Learning From The Past's MistakesScripture invites us to remember God's work and trust Him with our lives, avoiding self-preservation despite fears.Recognizing God's daily mercies and expressing perpetual awe for His kindness can strengthen and restore our souls. [30:44] Susie: “His mercy is what covers us time and time again. We should be in perpetual awe of the kindness of God, the mercies of God. It's because of His great love we are not consumed. His compassions never fail, his mercies are new every morning.”The Israelites were quick to forget God's care for them and were quick to turn away from Him because of fear. Susie also battled fear her whole life. However, she learned to face them through God's strength.[33:00] The Power of Words and DeclarationsFaith declarations are our statement of who God is, that God loves us and will fulfill His promises to us.Brain retraining is meant to help us identify ourselves as sons and daughters of God.Both of these practices help interrupt rogue thoughts by being spoken aloud. Speak your declarations over your life especially those that resonate with you.[39:07] Slaying Your Inner CriticUnresolved hurts and self-contempt create opportunities for the enemy; resolving them in God's love closes these openings.Seek support to process unresolved hurts in the light of God's love and trust the Holy Spirit to guide and correct them.[40:37] Susie: “When you allow those hurts, those hard parts of your story to go unresolved in light of God's love, they're like open loops and they're opportunities for the enemy to accuse God and accuse you.”[43:24] Imprinting Your Hope, Faith, and Belief in God in Your HeartSusie is always striving to get closer to God. Recently, she attended a conference with Dr. Reimer. The conference became a safe space to bring out these unresolved pasts into God's light.Despite new traumas, remembering God's love and focusing on Him allows us to see through the enemy's lies.Keep your hope alive and you'll eventually learn how to let go of past trauma. Remember who God is, trust that He is good and that He loves you.About SusieSusie Larson is an author, speaker, and host of the popular radio show, Susie Larson Live. They dive into what it really takes to scale, create systems, and gain back time, without burning out. In this episode, we chat about… From Ministry to Millions: Jason Duncan shares how losing his teaching job led to building a multimillion-dollar business and a new definition of success. The Cost of Having No Exit Strategy: Most entrepreneurs unknowingly build businesses that can't run without them. Jason explains how this oversight almost cost him everything. Exit Without Selling: Learn what it means to step back from your business while keeping ownership, profit, and control thanks to his "Exit Without Exiting" approach. The Exiter Operating System (XOS™Method): A breakdown of the proprietary system Jason uses to help business owners transition from operator to investor and increase company value by 30%. Too Many Businesses, Too Fast: After exiting operations, Jason launched five new ventures in one year, a decision that nearly burned him out. Here's what he learned about timing and focus. The Power of Masterminds and Community: Real stories from The Exiter Club show how group strategy and peer insight helped members scale, hire smarter, and buy back their time. Key Takeaways: Your Business Shouldn't Be a Prison If you build a business without an exit plan, you might trap yourself in a job you own. Freedom requires intentional systems and structures. Exit ≠ Sell An “exit” doesn't always mean selling. Jason's “Exit Without Exiting” method shows how to stay an owner while freeing your time. Most Entrepreneurs Never Reach Tier 3 The vast majority stay in the Owner-Operator or Owner-Manager stage. To truly scale and step back, you must aim for the Owner-Investor role. Focus First, Diversify Later Don't chase multiple streams of income too early. Nail one, automate it, and then scale into others. Time is the Ultimate Currency Money is renewable, time isn't. Don't be afraid to invest money to buy back your time. Coaching and Masterminds Fast-Track Growth Jason's clients have seen massive growth, smarter hiring, and higher company valuations just by applying proven systems and surrounding themselves with the right people. The severe challenges and unforeseen possibilities facing humanity today cry out for clarity. We need it all: poetry and politics, art and the people's army, agitation and organization, theory and practice, deep study and sustained action, joy and justice, both the moments of quiet contemplation and the times of swift, sharp thrusts, dreams as well as deeds. We're delighted to be joined from Santiago, Chile by Vijay Prashad, a preeminent Marxist theorist and activist intellectual. His work continues the initiative of the Tricontinental Conference in Cuba which brought together revolutionary movements from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Today Vijay is the executive director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, and an advisory board member of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. Vijay is refreshingly dialectical in his thinking and writing—witness a dangerous mind in ongoing argument with itself.
