The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience
Award-winning author, founder, and editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Review of Books, Tom Lutz, took a timeout to talk with me about his early years as a literary ne'er-do-well, what it's like to hang out with your heroes, and why you can assume every writer is faking it just a little bit. "Writing has never felt like a chore to me. It always feels like the space of freedom, and that I'm stealing the time from my job to do something I love." – Tom Lutz In addition to editing the Los Angeles Review of Books, "... a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and disseminating ... engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts," Tom also founded The LARB Radio Hour, The LARB Quarterly Journal, The LARB/USC Publishing Workshop, and LARB Books. He's a Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at UC Riverside, and the author of multiple bestselling and award-winning nonfiction titles – translated into dozens of languages – including Doing Nothing (American Book Award winner), Crying, and American Nervousness, 1903 (both New York Times Notables). His fiction debut is, “A literary thriller that wanders the globe,” novel Born Slippy is described as part "... literary thriller, noir and political satire ... a darkly comic and honest meditation on modern life under global capitalism.” Bestselling novelist James Ellroy said of the book, "Lutz has the seven deadly sins nailed and rethought for our 2020 world. You've got to dig this book!" Tom's writing has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New Republic, Chicago Tribune, ZYZZYVA, and many other newspapers and literary venues, as well as in dozens of books and academic journals. He previously taught at Stanford University, University of Iowa, CalArts, and the University of Copenhagen. PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). Movie of the Year: 1996TrainspottingExploring Trainspotting (1996): Danny Boyle, Scotland's 90s, and the Iconic Friends in FocusThe Movie of the Year podcast's episode on Trainspotting delves into the gritty, stylish, and controversial 1996 film directed by Danny Boyle. From its unforgettable ensemble cast to its iconic soundtrack, Trainspotting continues to resonate as a cultural and cinematic landmark.Danny Boyle: The Vision Behind TrainspottingDanny Boyle, the director behind Trainspotting, is a central focus of the episode. His innovative style and ability to merge dark humor with raw emotion propelled this film—and his career—to new heights. The podcast highlights how Boyle's kinetic direction and bold use of music, including Iggy Pop's “Lust for Life” and Underworld's “Born Slippy,” turned Trainspotting into a sensory masterpiece. The hosts also explore how Boyle's compassionate lens captures the humanity of even the most flawed characters. They discuss how this approach laid the groundwork for his future films, including Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later, cementing Boyle's status as a visionary filmmaker. The Film's Group of Friends: Complex, Flawed, and UnforgettableAt its heart, Trainspotting is a character-driven story about a group of friends navigating heroin addiction, poverty, and fleeting hope. Our latest Club Fusion entry spans a wide range of music, catching up on what we missed in January and February and previewing what's to come on dance floors in the next few weeks. There's plenty to talk about so let's dive in! John Summit returns with "Shiver," the follow-up to his massive 2023 hit "Where Are You Now," featuring another outstanding vocal performance by Hayla. While this track is a solid floor-filler, it may lean a bit too closely to the magic of its predecessor. However, that won't deter anyone from enjoying its deep atmosphere and haunting vocals. Summit also offers an exceptional update to Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition," a song that never tires in its various versions. In fact, "Sweet Disposition" is on track to rival Underworld's "Born Slippy" as a DJ favorite for revitalization. Summit's take maintains the original's integrity while adding his unique flair to the track. Both releases are essential for any DJ set. Among the tracks we're excited about is Becky Hill's latest single, "Never Be Alone," from her forthcoming album. The D.O.D remix cleverly incorporates the bass synth riff from Armand Van Helden's 90s remix of "Spin Spin Sugar" by Sneaker Pimps, elevating an already stellar track on the dance floor. Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa also contribute new offerings. Ariana's "Yes, and?" has been stuck in our heads like glue, echoing Madonna's iconic "Vogue" and inspiring numerous mashups. Felix Jahen's version stays true to the original while giving it a contemporary lift. We eagerly anticipate Grande's next album. Dua Lipa's third album seems to explore similar themes as her groundbreaking "Future Nostalgia." Personally, I would have chosen "Training Season" over "Houdini" as the lead single (excluding "Dance the Night Away" from the "Barbie" soundtrack). The songs don't fall flat, but they lack the captivating edge of her previous work. Nevertheless, the remixes manage to elevate them for the dance floor, keeping Lipa relevant in the house music scene. It's time to spotlight emerging DJs you should be following, starting with AVALAN ROKSTON. Currently in Beatport's Top 10 with their remake of Moby's "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" they've also released "Faith," a song teased on TikTok for over a month that truly lives up to the hype. The emotional depth of "Faith" is undeniable, especially when the euphoria hits. Their remix of London Grammar's "Strong" from 2023, though new to us, is so impressive it deserves recognition among the top dance songs of last year and has been included here despite ...

In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Underworld”. “Underworld” was formed in 1987 and consisted of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. As a duo they created synthpop music. However in 1990 the group became a trio and add Darren Emerson. At this point they went from synthpop to progressive house and techno. In 1996 they had their biggest mainstream hit “Born Slippy.Nuxx”, which was on the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. Take a listen here. “Born Slippy.Nuxx” captured the emotional and human element of the characters in “Trainspotting”. The use of vocals in EDM was new at the time because EDM tracks were largely instrumental. In addition, this track was a fusion and trance with its driving, repetitive. synth beats. This fusion blurred the lines with the genres. All of these things combined assisted with the evolution of EDM. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Paluma: Start – 25:07 and End – 31:53Our next artist, Paluma is a DJ and Producer from Australia that specializes in minimal music and deep house. For more than a decade, Paluma has been entertaining audiences with his live performances in Australia. 2020, marked the beginning of his journey as a producer and saw the release of his debut produced track "Rock The Boat". Paluma is also known for his reworking of popular songs like Fergie's "London Bridge". He is back with his latest rework of Sean Paul's 2000 hit “Temperature”; take a listen to it here.

Aquí podemos escucharlos con 2 temas: “Hey Boy Hey Girl” y “Dig Your Own Hole”. Aquí podemos escucharlos con 2 temas: “Hey Boy Hey Girl” y “Dig Your Own Hole”. Alarms, reminders, notifications. Church bells and a space shuttle countdown. Hurry up and read me! You're late! This song started with a concept and collecting the sounds that expressed it. Electronic instruments suggested the beat and melody, the lyrics came after that.Telling the story of how the song came together, Andy digs deep into the recording session to reveal the component parts before playing the rough mix he took to the mix sessions in Calgary. There is a tritone warning—and maybe check you have no Zoom meetings scheduled when you listen! Throughout, Andy talks about experimentation and surprising yourself. Some of the tracks he mentions are Born Slippy, Mother, Mr Blue Sky and Sound and Vision. The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience
Award-winning author, founder and editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Review of Books, Tom Lutz, took a timeout to talk with me about his early years as a literary ne'er-do-well, what it's like to hang out with your heroes, and why you can assume every writer is faking it just a little bit. You’ve got to dig this book!" Tom's writing has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New Republic, Chicago Tribune, ZYZZYVA, and many other newspapers and literary venues, as well as in dozens of books and academic journals. He previously taught at Stanford University, University of Iowa, CalArts, and the University of Copenhagen. ** Note on the audio quality: I reached Tom in his natural environs of LA, and the sounds of that urban landscape dot our interview. This interview was recorded at the end of January. Stay well! Please help us learn more about you by completing this short 7-question survey If you’re a fan of The Writer Files, please click subscribe to automatically see new interviews. In this file Tom Lutz and I discussed: His early years as a juvenile delinquent and the teacher that duped him into becoming a writer Why "... if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it." How he's happiest (and most creative) when playing hooky On impostor syndrome and sneaking in the back door of an exclusive club of writers What it's like to hang out with Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood And why you may not be the type of writer you think you are Show Notes: TomLutzWriter.com All things LARB Born Slippy by Tom Lutz [Amazon] Tom Lutz's Amazon Author Page Tom Lutz on Facebook Tom Lutz on Instagram Tom Lutz on Twitter Kelton Reid on Twitter

Frank Baltimore is a bit of a loser, struggling by as a carpenter and handyman in rural New England when he gets his big break, building a mansion in the executive suburbs of Hartford. One of his workers is a charismatic eighteen-year-old kid from Liverpool, Dmitry, in the US in the summer before university. Dmitry is a charming sociopath, who develops a fascination with his autodidact philosopher boss, perhaps thinking that, if he could figure out what made Frank tick, he could be less of a pig. Dmitry heads to Asia and makes a neo-imperialist fortune, with a trail of corpses in his wake. When Dmitry’s office building in Taipei explodes in an enormous fireball, Frank heads to Asia, falls in love with Dmitry’s wife, and things go from bad to worse. Combining the best elements of literary thriller, noir and political satire, Born Slippy is a darkly comic and honest meditation on modern life under global capitalism. Author Tom Lutz is in conversation with Steph Cha, author of Follow Her Home, Beware Beware, Dead Soon Enough, and Your House Will Pay.

The Quest is the Quest, if by quest you mean watching the 1978 classic series story “Underworld” and getting through it without great suffering. We kid – two thirds of the Three Who Rule are devout fans of this Tom Baker gem. Will the final third turn his frown upside down?
Tracklist: Ofenbach - Be Mine (2016) Blue nile - Tinseltown in the rain (1984) Barthezz - On the move (2001) Lucas and steve - Until Dawn (on the move) (2017) Daft punk - Digital Love (2001) Galeon - One sign (2001) (Recomendado por Pedro FM) Overseer - Skylight (Blade Trinity Soundtrack) (2004) (Recomendado por Drajan) Prodigy - Poison (1994) Amen - Without words (1991) Underworld - Born Slippy original (1995) (Recomendado por Cyberio) Fatboy Slim - Sunset (Bird of Prey) (2000) Hammer and bennet - Toca's Language (Santiago Niño dub tech mix)(david-dj mash up) (2005) (Recomendado por AXE) Malu - Fotonovela (2004) (Recomendado por Duel Project) Ivan - Fotonovela (1984) In-grid - Tu Es Foutu (2002)

This set kicks off with the deceptively delicious 'Things We Might Have Said' by Cari Golden feat. Reinier Zonneveld. The track is a slow-burner with it's light pulsating synth that builds with the anticipation of release only to resume a steady low-key beat. Climax never arrives, rendering the listener with a serious case of blue-balls. We quickly move into the 90's prog-classic 'Plastic Dreams' by Jaydee that was the forerunner for the alt-progressive house movement. Coupled with Groove Armada's 'Superstylin', which echos another 90's era classic 'Born Slippy' by Underworld, the two songs compliment each other perfectly but don't lay out the direction of the overall set. To keep you rooted in the here and now, the set transitions into several house tunes (on dark tip) that add illumination and prevent listeners from sliding into the abyss. By the end, 'Into the Deep' begins to transition back to where it began before closing the set out on a very uplifting positive note with 'White Keys' by Redondo & Deepme making the overall journey worth the trip. I have a very special Tribute set dropping later this week and am trying to see if I have enough time to squeak out a BackSpin request from long ago. No promises on that one. Expect the long-delayed EDM now DANCE set, which will be this year's 'Jingle Electric' followed by the annual 'Holiday Edition' the week after. I am a man of many talents; so walking and chewing gum at the same time is second nature to me. It's not uncommon for me to be working on multiple sets simultaneously. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. Until the next time...ENJOY! Album : Into the Deep [vol. 3] Genre : Progressive, House Year : 2016 Total Time : 01:21:38 Cari Golden feat. I want to give a HUGE shout-out to our longtime follower from the UK @Soeno for fixing a major issue with the site. If it wasn't for him, ya'll wouldn't be merrily streaming or downloading right now. So give him a BIG bear hug for being my extra set of eyes. As promised, I'm back and digging in deeper and darker with 'Into the Deep [vol. 3]'. With John Wilson. Karl Hyde, of electronic duo Underworld, has worked with prominent film directors Danny Boyle and Anthony Minghella. Along with his partner Rick Smith, he was also the musical director of the London 2012 Olympics. Hyde talks about his latest project, Edgeland - a soundtrack for The Outer Edges, a film about Essex - and reveals the real inspiration behind their trance anthem Born Slippy. Harold Pinter's The Hothouse is in a rare revival on the London stage, starring John Simm and Simon Russell Beale. Writer Iain Sinclair delivers his verdict on the play about a bureaucratic mental institution run by a sadist. Poet Kate Clanchy won the National Short Story award in 2009 with her story The Not-Dead and the Saved. Now she has taken the next literary leap by writing her first novel Meeting the English. She explains how the book came about, despite her vow that she'd never write a novel. In the latest episode of Cultural Exchange, in which creative minds select a favourite art-work, best-selling author Jodi Picoult nominates Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Here I am posting a summer mix in October - *blush*. Hopefully it’s worth the wait, and at just over two hours long, I’m trying my best to make up for it.The usual Update formula is followed here. We start with some deeper vocal cuts, move though some bump and jack Chicago-style grooves and then hit the main room for big electro and tech anthems. And it’s all pretty commercial too - lots of remixes, rerubs and bootlegs.Highlights for me include Matt Shrewd’s Grime Time, which first caught my ear on Unknown FM. Inland Knights make light work of Eric B’s classic rap in Where Ya At, and check out the re-workings of classics like Man With The Red face, Rich In Paradise and Born Slippy. This session also features one of my own edits of Jovonn’s mix of Mary J’s Just Fine, and we wind up with a recently rediscovered Guilty Pleasure: the euphoric 80s sequenced sythns in TFF’s Change remix.Enjoy :)1 - Shawn Christopher - Don't Lose The Magic (Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy Remix)2 - Los Jugaderos - What You Doing To This Girl (Norman Jay Edit - Digital Edit)3 - Inland Knights - Where Ya At4 - Matt Shrewd - Grime Time5 - Kinky Movement - You Make Me Feel6 - Matt Shrewd - Dont Look (King Kooba First Choice Slice Mix)7 - Ministry of Funk - The Dancer (Castelli Ipanema Remix)8 - Joey Youngman - Master Blaster (Original Mix)9 - Mary J Blige - Just Fine (Jovonn Remix - Noël's bridgeless edit)10 - Erykah Badu - Honey (Sticky & Soulful Dub)11 - Another Chance - Everytime I See Her (Sound Of Eden) - (Bodyrox Vocal Mix)12 - Richard Grey - Thriller - (Full Vocal Club Mix)13 - Bingo Players Vs Chocolate Puma - Touch Me (Bart B More remix)14 - Sharam - Get Wild (Original Mix) 15 - Behrouz, FPI Project - Rich In Paradise (Original Mix) 16 - Delerium feat.
