In this session I am speaking with Andrew Pearce on the concept of the trauma handover. We examine the definition of the handover, the commonly expected barriers to effective handover, and the recall of handover information. We will also examine where the handover occurs, standards and recommendations, tools and templates, how we can measure effectiveness, and finally whether it works in practice. We will also dig into some of the empirical literature to examine some of the evidence behind the handover. Andrew Pearce is an Emergency Physician and pre-hospital retrieval medicine specialist. He is currently the Clinical Director and a Medical Retrieval Consultant coordinator at MedSTAR Emergency Medical Retrieval Service based in Adelaide, Australia. In the episode we examine: 1. Definition of the clinical handover. 2. Commonly expected barriers to information handover. 3. Recall of information and some of the errors in recall. 4. Empirical findings on handover from the literature. 5. Where the handover occurs and bias attached to handover information. 6. Current standards & recommendations (Standard 6, ACSQHC) 7. Templates and Tools used and advocated. 8. Measuring effectiveness/quality assurance of handover. 9. Summary from Andrew. Some of the empirical papers and standards mentioned in this episode can be found here: Clinical handover in the trauma setting: a qualitative study of paramedics and trauma team members https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20702445/ Expectations differ between senders and receivers of patients in transition - Joint commission centre for Transforming Healthcare 2017 https://www.jointcommission.org/-/media/tjc/documents/resources/patient-safety-topics/sentinel-event/sea_58_hand_off_comms_9_6_17_final_(1).pdf?db=web&hash=5642D63C1A5017BD214701514DA00139&hash=5642D63C1A5017BD214701514DA00139 Clinical handovers between prehospital and hospital staff: literature review https://emj.bmj.com/content/32/7/577.short Australian Commission on safety and quality in healthcare: Standard 6: Clinical Handover https://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/Standard6_Oct_2012_WEB.pdf My thanks to Andrew for an engaging and insightful interview.

Avenue Red Podcast welcomes a dedicated veteran crate digger/DJ from the American Midwest city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin... Andrew Pearce AKA The Hermit enters the fray with a mix full of deep, jazzy, summery house music of the solid gold bullion variety. Andrew is the man behind the No Coast Muzik underground collective, mix series & events umbrella over in Madison and in his hometown, where he has also been throwing the monthly Retrospect parties for 10 years at some of the city's top clubs, including Studio 200. He also broadcasts his regular DJ livestream called Gravitate Sessions from JiggyJamz Vinyl in Madison, which has been running for over 6 years now. A man with over 10k records in his collection; behind hundreds of mixes released online; pushing countless events, large and small; a name like The Hermit can mislead... he is a committed and very knowledgable music head lifer, a valued repository of underground music (see his website, link below), tirelessly grafting to get so much good and obscure stuff out there into the wild... out of the unique kind of hermitage that all too often occurs when life gets in the way and the vast collections of diggers' music is left to collect dust, unseen and unheard. Enjoy this perfectly worked mix and keep your eyes open for the BIG 200 that follows next week, exactly 9 years after the inception of Avenue Red!!! It's going to be intense. "This mix is a throwback to the late 90's Midwest Deep House sound... Uptempo Jazz, Soul and Disco infused bliss with quick blends and long play masterpieces that take you on a journey with a few surprises along the way. It contains B-Sides and lesser known gems from master craftsmen mixed in traditional fashion... Vinyl, DITC and recorded in 1 take with no edits. Andrew wins the prize for being the guest who has ‘travelled’ the furthest to be on this podcast and finds himself stranded in Melbourne, Australia en route to his home in Bali; thanks to the Coronavirus. A mindset and performance coach and something of a ‘digital nomad’, Andrew helps executives and business owners be less stressed and achieve more. In this episode we explore the topics of fear, hustle culture and the ego. Delving into the esoteric and the scientific, Andrew presents a compelling way of looking at meditation and mindfulness through the practise of observation and a shift in consciousness; he teaches people how not to meditate! A straight talking, no nonsense kind of bloke, Andrew is someone I’ve never met in person, but if I can find a way of travelling to Bali to interview him again at one of his retreats, I’ll be sure to do so. Just got to figure out a way to convince the accountant!

Andrew Pearce is a life coach who specializes in helping us Humans understand the roots of our behavior. As he says, when we clearly see why we behave in a certain way that is not bringing us the results we want, we are gifted the freedom to change it. When it comes to addiction, Andrew talks about the freedom of choice in a way that can wake an addict up and give us the courage to take the future - and our wellbeing and recovery - back into our own hands. How and why have we chosen to give our power away in the first place? In this podcast, you'll hear about: How to identify, heal and clear blocks to in service of taking more aligned action and being able to receive more in our lives. Andrew's understanding of the mechanism behind self-sabotage. The difference between "safe problems" and "risky problems" - an incredibly potent and empowering distinction. A detailed example of unpacking how we may unconsciously create our problems to get our core needs met. A new way of looking at the word "responsibility," that has the power to change how we approach that concept within ourselves. The relationship between responsibility and freedom. How we can tip the scale between our old stories, towards taking full responsibility, in the service of taking constructive action in our lives. How we give our power away and what we are getting in return. The adult growth model: functional and dysfunctional versions of reliance, rebellion, results and realization. Briefly, how inner child work can fit into the big picture of our recovery. Becoming conscious of how we put energy behind certain thoughts. How at the bottom of every behavior is the perfectly natural, understandable desire to feel safe and feel loved. How can we love this desire and the behavior, en route to ultimately taking back our power and having choice in our reality? What is the key to stop needing our problems? Bonus quote from this podcast episode: "We can't hate ourselves into a version of ourselves that we love." - Lori Deschene
Watch the video of this podcast here. Andrew begins the interview by explaining the varied symptoms of anxiety including: sweats; a fast-beating heart; feeling shaky; overthinking; doubt and/or worry. He points out that the ‘fight and flight’ response is hardwired into our DNA, which is why these reactions can come about. There’s an important differentiation that he points out though when Cath asks him about what to do when you just “can’t handle” a problem or situation... “I can’t handle this,” actually means, “I don’t want to have to handle this.” We are creating the experience in the first place with what we tell ourselves and the way we frame our thoughts. Much food for thought there based on the cognitive behavioral therapy way of thinking. Preventing Anxiety Cath asked Andrew for some helpful tips on preventing Anxiety. He had two main strategies: Be aware of how and why you are doing something in the first place Look at the big picture and then break it down into smaller sections - this approach creates a different experience from where you’re at. (Go to the 7:45-minute mark for more detail on this.) Cath adds weight to this by giving an example of how she breaks things down herself - almost be ‘tricking herself’ to get through her feelings of overwhelm. Self-Care When asked about self-care, Andrew's response was emphatic - you must prioritize it by making it valuable. Entrepreneurs always ‘just have to get stuff done’ before they relax, so they sabotage their self-care more often than not. You need to put time aside and then commit to it. Something will always come up, so unless you set this time on your calendar and honor that booking, it won’t happen. Ironically, you’ll be more productive by doing less work. The final part of this process is to just slow down - “You go faster by slowing down,” claims Andrew. Otherwise, you spread yourself too thin and aren't working to your full potential. It’s well worth heading to the 15:50-minutemark of the interview where Andrew goes deep on explaining how we often sabotage the one thing we’re chasing as entrepreneurs because on a deeper level we’re actually resisting the success or higher income. Ultimately, we need to feel worthy of and open for the results we want to happen. He’s currently developing a program called “Entrepreneurs in Flow” all about this. “If you do the work on yourself, you can cut your working hours down and increase your money! “ Managing Expectations Finally, Andrew offers some tips on how we can manage expectations. He explains that the process of putting an expectation on ourselves, is actually what creates the stress and anxiety around that expectation in the first place. The belief of, “If I don’t meet this, I’m not good enough” is now set up. Then when you do reach that target that you wanted to reach, it’s The belief of, “If I don’t meet this, I’m not good enough” is now set up. Then when you do reach that target that you wanted to reach, it’s still not enough. Having an expectation is outcome dependent. Andrew suggests instead, making a goal that is ‘input’ dependant. Avoid self-judgment by aiming to give your best each day. If you give your best day in and day out, there’s not too much more than you can ask than that! Remember that your best will vary from day to day. If you’re feeling sick, your best isn’t going to be as good as when you’re feeling 100 percent well. Andrew uses a great ‘house’ analogy to explain this concept at the 26-minute mark, which makes the concept crystal clear. Finally, Andrew recommends that if you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or worried, the first thing you need to do is to take responsibility for where you’re at. If you’re ready to make a decision to do something about it, take action that you feels right for you - see your GP, tell a friend, buy a book. Don’t wait for things to happen - take responsibility and take action.

We're told about a game called Obliterate which BT have released on Prestel. You command a submarine and torpedo Argentinian submarines including one called "Fray Bentos". (You may have to look Prestel up on Wikipedia, it was like the internet but 1980). The phone lines are open for the Thameside listener charts. This week's chart is - 10:Layla/Derek and the Dominoes; 9:I Ran/Flock of Seagulls; 8:Nowhere Girl/B-Movie; 7:More Than This/Roxy Music 6:Fantastic Day/Haircut 100; 5:Is it a Dream/Classix Nouveaux; 4:Ghosts/Japan 3:The Damned Don't Cry/Visage; 2: Love Cascade/Leisure Process 1:Ever So Lonely/Monsoon. The broadcast is briefly introduced by Bob Edwards, but Paul James takes over. Paul has just come back from a working holiday in Cornwall, Sarah is also in the studio as is Ian the Engineer. After an hour (and a transmitter change) we get The Intrepid Birdman Show. There was a problem in the first 10 minutes with the batteries running flat in the cassette player. You can hear the the show sounding a bit slow. It then goes back up to speed. Dave tells us about the CB show at the Wembley conference centre which is relaying the broadcast. There is a pirate radio stand at the show. The first part of the show was broadcast from the Brentford tower blocks on Green Dragon Lane. This was used in 2014's "People Just Do Nothing" which started on YouTube and moved to BBC3 as the location for the fictional pirate Kurupt FM. Now Kurupt FM are real and playing festivals! Life imitating art imitating life. We learn that the site changes are done by "10-1 Teddy" and Ian the Engineer who has injured himself. There are brief moments during quiet patches of the songs where the transmitter switches off - the transmitter were designed to switch off quickly when the audio finished because it was the end of the show or when there was a transmitter change but they could be a bit enthusiastic and switch off briefly during a show! We're told about an experiment in 3D TV. However demand for the special glasses is so high they have had to delay the test to make some more. It will be broadcast on May 4th in a programme called "the Real World". 3D TV, 1982, maybe technology isn't moving on as quickly as we think. You can watch it here. After an hour with Paul and two with Dave this podcast finishes at 10pm or so. But keep an eye on your podcast feed or the siteas there is more to come on Thameside Radio Revisited from the same day and the next. We have Bob Edwards from later on this evening and the Thameside Radio picnic from Harrow on the Hill the next day (it was Easter Monday). And finally: Did you know that the voice on the "Thameside Radio Plays Good Music" is one of Dave's children? Recorded in Hyde Park during an OB! Dedications and letters from Robert, Mike of Chalfont, the Intrepid Birdman Appreciation Society, Andrew Pearce from Hindhead, Steve Scribbler, John H, Richard, Annette, Dave and Pete. Hugh Gunning, John of Edgware, Bill Popstar, Tom Grady, Lynne Steele, Wendy and Cathy from Frank Kennedy from Norwood Green who gets a kiss from Sarah. Paul Marshall (age 13) from Chalfont st. Giles. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
This week in the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO SPOTLIGHT we will be listening to the music of five composers who I would LOVE to see have a crack at scoring a major Hollywood film featuring Kevin Kaska, Peter Boyer, Andrew Pearce, Mike Verta and David Coscina.
Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
Welcome one and all to Cinematic Sound Radio’s third annual Christmas special. On the program this year you will hear music from Jeannot Szwarc’s 1985 film SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE starring Dudley Moore. You’ll also hear a rare Christmas gem by Bruce Broughton for the 1991 family comedy ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS. Mychael Danna wrote arguably one of his very best scores for the 2006 film THE NATIVITY STORY; you’ll hear a lengthy suite from that score. We will also feature music from Maurice Jarre’s score to the 1989 film PRANCER – a score that received its very first CD release a few months ago. Sprinkled throughout the program you’ll hear shorter selections from Randy Edelman’s SURVIVING CHRISTMAS, Hans Zimmer’s THE HOLIDAY, and Christopher Lennertz’s A DIVA’S CHRISTMAS CAROL. To open the program you’ll hear Andrew Pearce’s extended TF1 CINE DIMANCE LOGO THEME and the close the show you will hear the “Christmas Carol Medley” arranged by Angela Morley from the 1990 film HOME ALONE.
Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On the program today you are going to hear a three hour plus program dedicated to music written for anything but film, TV and video games by film, TV and video game composers. It is not uncommon place for film composers to cross over and dabble in the concert hall. Many of the greatest Golden Age film composers actually got their start in the concert world – Erich Wolfgang Korngold, for instance, wrote many operas and symphonies years before scoring such films as THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and THE SEA HAWK. Others like John Williams, James Horner, Miklos Rozsa, Danny Elfman, Cliff Eidelman, Bernard Herrmann – just to name a few – have also written spectacular and challenging music to be enjoyed away from the silver screen. This is actually CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s third CONCERT MUSIC BY FILM COMPOSERS program. This is our first since 2006. On the show today you will be hearing classical works by such composers as Andrew Pearce, Christopher Gordon, Lee Hodridge, Robert Folk, Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith, James Seymour Brett and more.

I’m uploading this in December 2009. I’ve stumbled upon a box of old mix tapes from the mid 90s and this one’s a corker, full of main room peak time vocal anthems. According to my scribbles on the inlay card (pictures attached to the file) I originally mixed this for Tony Mellor after a lost weekend at The Fridge in London. It may have been Pride weekend when I travelled down with Chris Buckley, Mark & Darren. Anyway, I remember mixing this on a sunny day in my flat in Chorlton.Highlights include the opening pumped-up version of Where Love Lives, Moné’s Movin’, and The Happy Clappers’ Can’t Help Myself.
