Send us Fan MailGuinea pigs don't read the dog-and-cat neurology textbook and that's exactly where clinicians get into trouble. We sit down with Dr. Vishal Murthy to unpack what a truly species-specific neurologic examination looks like for guinea pigs, why so many “standard” tests can be misleading, and how prey-species stress can flatten reflexes and hide both normal function and real disease. If you've ever felt unsure interpreting postural reactions or reflex testing in small mammals, this conversation gives you a clearer baseline for what normal actually is. We dig into the practical realities that make exotic pet neurology hard in the exam room: freezing, shutdown behaviors, and the ways restraint and stress can change responses. Vishal shares the most surprising findings from their work, including why a gag reflex attempt can quickly become a chewing response, and what that means for brain and spinal cord lesion localization. We also talk about differences between client-owned and research guinea pigs, and why handling style may explain pelvic limb tactile placing changes. To make this useful at 2 a.m. in ER as well as in specialty practice, we walk through a guinea pig specific checklist designed to emphasize feasible, more reliable exam elements and reduce unnecessary handling. The goal is better diagnostic accuracy, faster decision-making, and improved welfare for a prey species that experiences exams differently than cats and dogs. Subscribe for more veterinary neurology conversations, share this with your zoological companion animal colleagues, and leave a rating and review wherever you listen.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.12.0823INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ®  OR AJVR ® ?JAVMA ® : https://avma.org/JAVMAAuthorsAJVR ® : https://avma.org/AJVRAuthorsFOLLOW US:JAVMA ® :Facebook: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association - JAVMA | FacebookInstagram: JAVMA (@avma_javma) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: JAVMA (@AVMAJAVMA) / Twitter AJVR ® : Facebook: American Journal of Veterinary Research - AJVR | FacebookInstagram: AJVR (@ajvroa) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: AJVR (@AJVROA) / TwitterJAVMA ®  and AJVR ®  LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/avma-journals

Many of you may know him from hit TV shows like The Swan and Botched, and today he joined me to discuss the future of aging, from GLP-1 medications and biohacking to the biggest misconceptions about plastic surgery and what actually helps us look and feel our best as we get older. We dive into everything from facelifts and filler fatigue to why so many procedures go wrong, and what truly makes someone look refreshed rather than overdone. But this conversation goes far beyond aesthetics, we also unpack the explosive role of AI in healthcare, the concept of longevity “escape velocity,” and what it really means to preserve your body so you can take advantage of what's coming next in medicine. For more on Dr. Terry Dubrow, follow him on:Dr. & Mrs. Guinea Pig on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@heatherdubrow Listen to The Between Us Podcast: https://www.instagram.com/betweenusthepodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drdubrow/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrDubrow Thanks to my Sponsors:Save 25% on your first month at Ritual.com/OVER50Use code OVER50 for 15% off the Premium Starter Kit at BranchBasics.comGet 10% off your first order sitewide with code FLOURISHING at OSEAMalibu.comGo to Leesa.com for 20% off mattresses PLUS get an extra $50 off with promo code OVER50, exclusive for my listeners.Head to Manukora.com/FLOURISHING to save up to 31% plus $25 worth of free gifts with the Starter Kit, which comes with an MGO 850+ Manuka Honey jar, 5 honey travel sticks, a wooden spoon, and a guidebook! For a limited time, Hollow Socks is having a Buy 2, Get 2 Free Sale. Horror films are a unique genre because they can have a profound effect on the viewer. They can literally change lives, leaving such a strong impression that something shifts in the psyche. Whether it makes someone afraid to go in the water, uneasy around bugs, frightened by Frankenstein's creature, or just generally on edge, these films can have a lasting impact. They are meant to scare us, but for some, they remain harmless entertainment. For others, certain films reach much deeper, lingering in the mind long after the credits roll. And yet, we keep coming back for more. Do these films help us confront our fears? Do they help us overcome them? Can they serve as a way to process real-world trauma, something made easier to face when it exists within the safe boundaries of a movie? Join us for this episode as we explore the films that have had a lasting impact on us, along with others that have left a powerful mark on audiences. Movies mentioned in this episode: The Blob (1958), Bring Her Back (2025), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Day of the Dead (1985), The Deep House (2021), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig (1981), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986), Hereditary (2018), Infested (2023), Irreversible (2002), Jaws (1977), King Kong (2005), Last House on the Left (1972), Marathon Man (1976), Mondo Magic (1975), Nekromantik (1988), Night of the Lepus (1972), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Old Boy (2003), The Omen (1976), Open Water (2003), The Orphanage (2007), Paranormal Activity (2007), Pet Sematary 91989), Piranha (1978), Psycho (1960), Relic (2020), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), A Serbian Film (2010), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Trouble Every Day (2001)

Happy Sixth Season of The Inklings Variety Hour! Would you like a present to mark the occasion? One of these fine rings, perhaps? No, not the green ones. No, I don't care if it's St. Patrick's Day. You. Can't. Have. The. Green. Ones.  But have a yellow ring. No, seriously, go for it. Why are you hesitating? But that's preposterous. They won't make you disappear. What do you think this is, The Hobbit? Why does it always come back to rings? I say none of this on today's episode, but perhaps it's that the Inklings knew that rings bind you to someone else. Or something else.  In this case, the Wood Between the Worlds? Or Faerie? Or to your evil and intimidating uncle who is a mad magician-scientist with a furnished room that you don't know about and a dead fairy godmother named Mrs. Lefay? What's up with the strange parallels in this book, anyway? You've got children in England exploring inside because it's rainy. You've got Uncle Andrew and Jadis making essentially the same speeches. You've also got the wood between the worlds and the crawlspace between houses, as well as the troubling ways in which Digory resembles his uncle--both of whom, by the way, end up technically responsible for sending children to another world when they're old men. But what kind of an old man who sends children into peril will Digory grow up to be? The sort who thinks rules don't apply to him, or the sort who makes endless inside jokes with himself about Plato? Character matters. To talk about some of these riddles, or at least allude to them as we talk about things that are probably more interesting, I have Dr. Luke Mills. Join us on a whirlwind tour through Edwardian England, tunnels behind houses, Guinea Pig paradises that maybe aren't good for humans, and desolate worlds with very strange women among very strange waxworks that definitely aren't good for humans. (Seriously, though, what are the waxworks?) This may be your last chance to travel to Charn before Netflix ruins it forever with Pink Floyd or the 1950s or whatever-the-[deplorable word] a Barbie auteur wants to put in there. Among other things, Luke and Chris talk about the figure of Lilith--and why this account of Jadis' origins may not differ so much from that given in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We also discuss ways to tell whether or not that special someone in your life may not, in fact, be evil. Let's dive in! Or wonder, till it drives you mad, what would have followed...etc., etc.

In this episode, Caroline hosts renowned plastic surgeon and star of Botched, Dr. Terry Dubrow, for a “hard questions” episode and some laughs. He educates us on Ozempic/GLP-1 drugs, microdosing, and newer peptide options like tirzepatide and the not-yet–FDA-approved “retatrutide,” which he says may help lower inflammation and support “preservation longevity” while AI accelerates disease breakthroughs. They discuss fears around AI, his belief that people should learn to use it, and his warning about unregulated online/black-market compounds. In beauty, Dubrow urges women to dial back fillers, avoid “Ozempic face panic,” be cautious with deep plane facelifts, and invest more in consistent energy devices (lasers/ultrasound/radiofrequency) rather than extreme procedures. He shares lessons from Botched and Plastic Surgery Rewind, including turning down risky patients, a memorable case removing “concrete” facial injections by reducing—not fully removing—masses, and how he and his wife test wellness trends on their “Doctor and Mrs. Guinea Pig” channel.
