Don and Tom dive into common misconceptions about what's really been the top-performing asset class over the past five years—spoiler: it's not the S&P 500. They compare U.S. large-cap growth with international small-cap value, using Larry Swedroe's data to highlight the importance of global diversification. Listeners call in about estate planning, withdrawal rates in retirement, and portfolio construction. The hosts explain community property rules, flexible withdrawal strategies backed by research, and which small-cap value ETFs they prefer. The episode closes with a reality check on Bitcoin's latest crash, revisiting Mark Hulbert's warning that crypto isn't an asset class but a risky “thingy.” 0:04 Opening banter on the show's long Seattle run and mission to simplify money. 2:08 The S&P 500 obsession—why investors overweight large U.S. growth stocks. 3:23 Larry Swedroe's quiz: best-performing asset class 2019–2025 (hint: it's not U.S. large growth). 4:07 Dimensional International Small Cap Value Fund (DISVX) vs. S&P 500 Growth (VOOG). 5:20 Why diversification and global exposure matter long-term. 6:20 Break: “Financial Flinch Reflex” PSA. 7:42 Diversification means holding assets that sometimes disappoint you. 8:33 Don's marriage analogy and listener call-in from Baltimore about trusts. 10:15 Estate simplicity, beneficiary designations, and when trusts are unnecessary. 11:55 The danger of “trust mills” and the value of family transparency. 14:40 Community property vs. joint tenancy—Washington's unique tax advantage. 16:36 Call from Michael: flexible vs. fixed withdrawal rates in retirement. 17:29 Why a 5% flexible withdrawal often beats the classic 4% rule. 20:19 Research roundup: Kitsis, Vanguard, Morningstar confirm flexible success rates. 23:09 Listener from Tennessee asks about capital-gains exclusions. 25:44 Chris from Seattle: using target-date funds to fix a “hodge-podge” portfolio. 27:24 Adding small-cap value (AVUV) to target-date funds for tilt and simplicity. 28:34 Listener from New Hampshire asks which planning software Appella Wealth uses. 30:06 Call from Sam: best small-cap value ETF options (AVUV vs. VBR). 33:21 Risk, volatility, and why small-cap value offers higher expected returns. 35:47 Mark Hulbert on crypto's crash—bigger than 1929 by percentage. 36:54 Why hype, not utility, drives crypto coverage. 38:36 Final takeaway: investors remain too U.S.-centric; diversify globally. Finally broke my Soul of Sydney duck. I went to their very first party at Sydney Park maybe 14 years ago with my then two little boys. The youngest who was only two took to it like a duck. He dragged me into the middle of the makeshift dancefloor and started dancing. He didn't want to leave.Fast forward to 2025 and I'm the one behind the decks spinning vinyl classics from 91-94. It was a beautiful sunny day and the vibe reflected it. Smiley happy house heads everywhere you looked.I wasn't sure what I was going to play, but as set time approached Terry playing before me was putting some thickness out of those speakers, so I started with something chunkier to match - Frankie Knuckles 2005 hit - Back In The Day.From there it was back to back classics, not the big obvious ones, you hear them all the time at classics events. No this was the cool stuff that we all loved but it stayed very much underground. The only exception is towards the end when I decided to drop my latest track - Beautiful Persons. It samples Beautiful People which meant it fit nicely alongside tracks more than 30 years older. So many kind words from everyone after the set. Such a wicked crowd, as most older crowds are, knowledgable, friendly, want to have fun, and don't have their phones out all the time - THEY ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE MOMENT!!!Huge thank you to Phil & Sam for having me onboard. Well done to the other DJs, the music was solid from start to finish. And we can't leave out the energies bunny that is Mirrah Reflects
Last show of the month and we were lucky two get two guests on the show, em_laa and Jeremy Sylvester. The first show on VBR was a new mix of new(ish) tracks, so that leaves this week for crate digging and boy did we dig! At least three quarters of the mix is vinyl as I didn't switch to digital until 2005 and most of these tracks are much older than that.No preconceptions of what I was gonna play or even the style. We started super chill with Karizma's remix of John Legend's - Ordinary People. By track four we'd gone all the way back to the early 90's and that's where we spend a lot of the first half of the mix. The US garage sound of the early 90's reigns supreme with classic after classic raining down.We then transition across the pond to my homeland for the UK garage equivalent with mid 90's classics on the menu. We'll do it all again next month, but for now I'm gonna call the first month on VBR a roaring success. There's a great energy and real buzz on the station. The chatroom seems to always be busy and everyone is so supportive of each other.Congratulations Andy.Tracklisting:1: John Legend - Ordinary People (Karizma Kayorican Remix)2: Real People - Alibi (Dennis F's Out In Bali Mix)3: Fuminori Kagajo ft Adeola Ranson - Piece Of Heaven (Sean McCabe Dub Mix)4: Seven Grand Housing Authority - The Question (Terrence Parkers Orig)5: DJ Man-X & Vick Lavender ft Shawnee Taylor - Happy Endings (Frankie Feliciano Classic Vocal)6: Shawn Christopher - Make My Love (Stonebridge Main Mix)7: MK - Burning8: Clubland - Lovetrain (Def Mix)9: Nush - Nush10: ACR - 27 Forever11: Buster Gut - Find Someone12: Darryl James - You Make Me Happy (Todd Terry)13: Smooth Touch - House Of Love14: Sagat - Luv Stuff15: Carleen Anderson - Mamma Said (K Klassic Mix)16: c2eMusic - Beautiful Person17: Roger S - Time To Stop18: Gusto - Disco's Revenge19: The Bucketheads - The Bomb20: That Kid Chris - Feel The Vibe21: Ground 96 - Love Has Taken Over22: Todd Edwards - Push The Love23: ??? Week two on VBR and it's guest mix time!Joining me on the show this week was DJ em_laa (Emma McGuigan). As the name suggests she is in fact Irish. Em spent her Uni years in the heart of clubland, Liverpool and Manchester through the 90's and 00's. Now calling Sydney home for the last 2 years it's time to test the local scene and showcase her skills.Em played alone for the first hour to maximise your exposure to her sound. Then in the second hour we went b2b.I was blown away by her solo set at the top of the show. Some awesome tunes and flow built up nicely.Looking forward to playing b2b with her this Saturday at Tatlers from 12am-close.Tracklisting (to follow)Enjoy!
In this episode we answer emails from Kyle, Steve and James. Find out as we break down their impact on factor representation within diversified portfolios, focusing on strategies like the Golden Butterfly. Join me, Frank Vasquez, in our latest episode as I discuss listener questions and share insights on choosing between Invesco's RSP and traditional options like SPY or VOO. I'll also revisit my preference for the small-cap value ETF VIOV over VBR, emphasizing the advantages of the S&P 600 index's unique profitability filter. This episode is packed with knowledge to help you refine your portfolio allocation strategies, with a special focus on the role of managed futures and their influence on compound annual growth rates and drawdowns.Shatter the myth of bucket strategies as we confront their limitations in mitigating sequence of returns risk. Drawing on Bill Bengen's studies, I argue that excessive cash allocations hinder performance more than they help. We explore the psychological allure of bucket strategies and suggest that true financial security lies in prudent spending rather than complex asset arrangements.

Paul mentions his upcoming presentation to the L.A. Chapter of AAII on November 16, 2024 10:30 to noon. Chris Pedersen and Daryl Bahls join Paul to answer your questions. Paul opens the podcast with a brief introduction of the team and notes how thankful he is for their commitment to helping others. Paul mentions the huge moves small cap value funds made on November 6. He follows that with a comparison of the 5 year returns of AVUV and 3 Vanguard small cap value funds (VBR, VIOV and VTWV). AVUV compound rate of returns were 3 plus percent higher than the Vanguard funds. Paul's questions: What caused the higher returns and are they likely to be similar in the future? Chris responds with a lengthy discussion of the systematic approach that AVUV uses and Paul reads what AVUV says about their systematic approach. Chris compares the DFA small cap value fund (DFSV) with AVUV. Chris also talks about a relative ranking he wants add to his Best In Class recommendations next year. Chris discusses the quality factor of AVUV vs. funds that build their small cap value portfolio using the Russell 2000 Small Cap Value Index. He introduced a new term: rich minus weak ratio.Paul and Chris discuss the question: Is AVUV and actively managed fund? Question: JL Collins recommends VTI (Total Market Index) and Warren Buffett recommends VOO (S&P 500). Which do we recommend? Chris notes the important differences between VTI and AVUS and suggests a likely extra .5% return from AVUS. For those who want to own only total market funds, the group discusses the possibilities of replacing both VIT(U.S. Total Market) and VXUS (International Total Market) with total market indexes that favor slightly smaller companies with a slightly more value tilt. Paul references Ben Carlson's article about, “Some Things I Don't Believe About Investing.” Chris, Daryl and Paul weigh in on things they don't believe about investing.Chris ends with some important comments about how we are likely helping investors. Paul and Chris cover several questions about the Best-in-Class ETF recommendations and selection process. What's the overarching objective of the Best-in-Class ETF recommendations?* What's the 6-step process described in your AAII Best-in-Class ETF Article? Why is it sometimes worth paying another tenth of a percent or more for funds with more exposure to small or value? Is AVUV's recent 6%/year return advantage over VBR expected and/or likely to continue?* What did Avantis say are the market conditions that favor or disadvantage their approach?* How should investors think of the risks of tilting away from the cap-weighted market indexes towards small and value? Retail investors have a potential superpower versus institutional fund managers -- patience! How many hours does it take Chris to update the Best-in-Class ETF recommendations? JL Collins is a big proponent of the total market index. How much is our Best-in-Class ETF recommendation for large-cap blend (AVUS) likely to outperform a total-market index fund such as VTI? During a four-month NSF GROW fellowship in South Korea, Dr. Ogata fabricated highly-porous carbon nanofibers via electrospinning and integrated the nanofibers with the VBR platform to develop a tear-based glucose sensor, as described in Analytical Chemistry. In her six-month postdoctoral position with Dr. Joe Patterson at UC-Irvine, I learned and executed cryotransmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) to study the formation of protein-metal-organic-framework (p-MOF) composites, earning a front-cover featured publication in JACS. As an NIH T32 postdoctoral fellow at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, she led a project on the detection of COVID-19 viral antigens in collaboration with researchers at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. Within a six-month period, she co-wrote and received a grant for COVID-19 research, developed ultrasensitive viral antigen assays, tested COVID-19 patient samples, and published two manuscripts – one as first author in Clinical Chemistry. In addition, Dr. Ogata initiated and executed a study on vaccinated participants and led the design of sample collection, assay development, and sample analysis in collaboration with researchers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. This study resulted in a first author publication in Clinical Infectious Diseases, and presents the first evidence of SARS-CoV-2 protein production from mRNA vaccination. Outside of lab, she enjoys working out and enjoying happy hour with friends. You can follow Dr. Ogata on Twitter @OgataAlana. Visit http://JohnBlakeAudio.com to Learn How to DOUBLE Your Enquiry-to-Sale Conversion with The Lead Flow You Already Have. Getting in front of your dream clients may seem unreachable at first glance, more so if they haven’t even heard of you before. You may think they are in another league, that they wouldn’t be interested in doing business with anybody that isn’t as renowned as them. That couldn’t be farther from the truth, there are quite some things you can do to get to them, and most importantly, to make yourself relevant to them. Today, I'm going to share with you the six keys that you need to be aware of to get appointments with your dream clients. They are essential to get the job done. Picture this, in most cases, businesses have got a list of clients that they would love to work with, but those clients are not beating a path to their door, they're not coming to them through their normal marketing. They know who they are, but they don't have a strategy to get in front of them. Let's face it, your ability to get in front of people really determines the income and the turnover of the business. If you've got low appointments, it means low sales. Unfortunately, there are some methods businesses use to get appointments that, to a large extent, can, and often do, destroy credibility. Cold calling is a good example of this. Only about 2% of cold calls actually result in an appointment, and the few that do get scheduled are very likely to get cancelled. This is why a lot of salespeople give up. I know that you want a method that actually produces results. These six keys will guide you through a more personal and fruitful path to getting appointments. I know from experience that they are amazing at making people interested in new business opportunities. For instance, the first one of these keys is to be persistent. If you know that you can really add value to a particular business, then don't give up. Continue to show up with Valid Business Reasons to talk to them—I’ve done a podcast on this in the past so, if you want to know more about VBR’s, go check that one out. You want to add value, send them information that they would find useful, refer business to them, this will often position you very powerfully. Do your homework so you can provide them with something that they find helpful for their current situation, or their current needs. I do teach several clients different strategies and different ways that they can use to get in front of their dream clients, and I can tell you that these six keys are fundamental if you want to succeed in the task. Listen to this episode to know how these can help you assemble an effective approach to getting appointments. [02:05] Nuevas publicaciones: Tertulias semanales. Calidad de audio regulera. Tertulia abierta a cualquiera. Toc2audio https://docs.jcea.es/toc2audio/. [27:40] Final.

Most of us do these things in the Spring. Change our smoke and Carbon Monoxide detector batteries. We move the furniture like a couch to cleanout. Get our AC units tuned up. We empty our closets and switch out our winter to spring clothes. Maybe for some of us, our winter sweats to Spring attire. Or call 1-800. Got Junk to call them and point at the things you want to disappear. Isn't it a great feeling when you go through this process? You clear out and update what no longer is working for you. Let me ask you a question. What Spring cleaning do you need to do with your business? What can you do to clear away or update to improve your business? In your next sales meeting, discuss the following items to see if they could use a little sprucing up. Discuss as a team the best approach to earning the first meeting. Is there a better way to save you time, a proven process when reaching a new client? Is it time to review your sales materials you send prospective customers? The materials you use to position the key benefits and differences in working with you and your company. VBR's - have you updated them to be relevant in today's business world? Have you taken the time to spruce up your LinkedIn profile? Start with updating your recommendations by adding some from this year. Reach out to Happy customers and ask them to write a referral for you; for more tips, follow Jennifer Darling, who is the expert on generating leads through LinkedIn. Organize your email inbox! An email has become one of the ways we communicate in business. But it doesn't have to steal valuable time away from you moving your business forward. Your inbox may be a lot like your closet, which needs some purging or better organization. Apply this one-hour strategy, and you will feel more in control of your emails versus the emails controlling you and your day. Minutes 1 to 10: clear out the Junk I like starting by sorting by who sent the email. I allow myself ten minutes to delete all the junk emails. These emails are the ones cluttering up your inbox and keeping you from the ones you need to see. Minutes 10 to 30: create folders and labels Now it's time to organize the messages left that don't need any action but that you need or want to keep. There are as many folder systems as email users, but an easy one to try is to make a folder for any topic or type of email with several messages that relate to it. So, that could mean folders like Client-specific, members of your team you coach, VBR, Research, HR, and so on. You can also create a "To File Later folder" or an "Unsubscribe" folder for anything you don't want anymore. Those are great folders to sort through when you have five minutes between meetings. Minutes 30 to 50: Use the two-minute rule or make a to-do list for emails that need action The emails you're left with now need action. If you do it in less than two minutes, do it now. If you need more time to take care of the message, add it to your to-do list with a notification to remind you to do it. Then, archive the email to keep your inbox clear (you'll still be able to search for it later). Minutes 50 to 60: Update your settings for easy maintenance You can avoid this by setting up filters that'll automatically sort your incoming messages, so you don't have to. You can set up a filter that sends them all to a "Read Later" folder. (Outlook has its version of filters called "rules" that can do some heavy lifting for you.) You might also consider setting up an auto-reply for your Gmail or Outlook when you won't be able to reply to emails as quickly as you usually would (like if you're in a meeting, out of the office, or on vacation). And, to fly through your messages, you can enable and learn some keyboard shortcuts for Gmail or Outlook. One final recommendation to help manage to clear your inbox each day is to approach each email with "Read, Act, File, or Delete." Use these four options will help you to clear your inbox daily. It "requires real commitment," but the goal is simple: "Never touch something more than once." If possible, schedule meetings that can't run longer than 45-50 minutes so you can catch up on emails during the 10-15 minutes in between appointments. So Spring into Action today! Update your systems and get rid of things that no longer serve you. This way, you can spend more time with your customers and moving your business forward! She has over 34 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience. In episode 94, Learn the 5 tips to earning the meeting with your prospect now! There is a process with payoff when you follow a proven strategy. When reviewing your list of prospects, the goal is to answer three questions before trying to secure the first meeting. Show that you know something about Their business. Give the prospect a reason to meet with you. Give the prospect a reason Why they should meet with you Now! Following the 3 P's, you will be on your way to meeting more prospects faster than your competitors. Purpose: Why are we meeting? Why meet Now? Process: Process vs. Product? Payoff: How will we benefit from spending this time together? So let's think about the Purpose of your meeting. Why should they meet with you, Now? Google is our gateway to finding meaningful reasons as to why they should meet with us. You have to be resourceful in finding that reason, so you earn the meeting this season. Just securing an appointment is one of the most challenging steps in the entire sales process. Yes, having a referral, a case study of proven success, or an industry success story makes this Process a little easier. But, what if you don't have those? It would be best if you discovered a VBR that is relevant and timely for your prospect. In my search to help us find a more effective way to get our prospects to meet with us now, I discovered five tips that The Center for Sales Strategy recommended. 1. Prospect's Website Most of us look at clients' websites' home page. But let's look for any current or upcoming initiatives that you could help enhance. What about sponsorships or charities they're involved? Go to the bottom of the page and look for the news section. There you may find new announcements going on with the company. 2. Industry News What's going on in their industry right now that may be a significant challenge for them? How might you help with this? If you don't know off the top of your head, do a quick Google search for recent news in the category. Industry websites — check or subscribe to stay up to date with how your prospect's industry is doing. Competitive gains — Has a competitor of theirs done something that will potentially affect your prospect's business? 3. Consumer Behavior Trends Think about their target consumer. Are there any recent trends that could be affecting the way they may purchase their product/service? Start broad if you're not sure of their exact target. Think generational trends: millennials, boomers, etc. Call and say that you have discovered a real need to reach adults 25-34 and see their company answering the needs. 4. Social Media Yes, most companies have a Facebook page. Think beyond their page and check out to see any initiatives and how they interact with their consumers. Read the shared comments to know if you see a trend or need. Use LinkedIn to connect with the decision-maker and join groups relevant to that industry. Pay attention to discussions among the group. Ask questions if you have any – their answers may help you get in the door with your prospect! 5. Timing Is there a seasonality of their product or service? For example, if they're about to enter the slow season, how might you help them increase sales and stay top-of-mind? Use Google Alerts. Set up a Google Alert, so you receive a daily/weekly update every time your prospect shows up in the news. There may be something in the future, if not now. You may need to combine a few resources to create that sense of urgency in the prospect's mind. Now you have established a solid reason why they should meet, now. Now let's discuss the Process! Many of your competitors, not the three-word podcast listeners, focus on leading with their products when trying to earn the meeting versus focusing on the Process. Product pitchers or package pitching is what these clients come to expect or, as Jennifer Darling says, " Pitch Slapping them. Let me give you an example: Product pitch: " I would love to talk to you about an idea that we created to deliver results for your business." In this case, you talk about the results they have achieved for others. Process pitch: "We have a powerful process that's worked very well with many companies like yours and helped them to achieve new customer conversions." In this example, you talk about HOW you achieved the results for your clients. The How - Now! Can you hear the difference? You can lead with Product, Product, Product or Process, Process, Process. In your next sales meeting, talk with your team about if your team is product pitching or sharing a proven process when securing the first meeting. Finally, the Payoff! This meeting's intended payoff is for you to share the Purpose and the Process you offer clients to help impact what is important to them. Why should they want to meet with you now —and not the other way around? Because you have the answers to these three words: Purpose, Process, and Payoff! If you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, rate it, or subscribe for Free at Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.

This episode provides several strategies to increasing your Law of averages and improving your probability ratios. I can think of countless cases when applying the Law of Probability strategy was the difference in achieving that outcome if you put yourself in a specific situation and continue to work towards that outcome, your probability increases. The Law of Averages says that a ratio will begin to appear if you do something often enough. For example, if you talk to 10 people, and one says yes, a ratio will begin to appear; you are at 1:10. You'll notice that once it starts, it tends to continue. If you talk to 10 people you'll get 1. Ask, and you get, don't, and you won't—the law of probability. It is a simple concept and effective. The key in sales is to keep moving and keep talking to more people, keep meeting, calling, and exploring opportunities to increase your chances and increase your ratio. And this way, Mathematically, you can increase your chances of converting more clients. Repetition is the key. If you do this, you can expect this. If you put yourself in the situation more times, you learn from each experience and gain knowledge along the way. Once you understand how the Law of Averages works, you can start making it work for you. Here are three easy steps using the Law of Averages to help improve your sales. Know your numbers. For many of you, you have access to a CRM program that can help track your performance. If not, create a spreadsheet of your progress. For the next two weeks, keep doing what you have been doing. The only thing you should do differently, for the time being, is to track your activities. Note the number of people you call or meet, note whether you were able to reach the decision-maker, and then, of course, state whether you sold them anything. At the end of the two weeks, review your ratios. I recommend tracking a few different things (all in ratios) Number of calls you made each day Number of Decision Makers you reached Number of appointments you set ( ratio of meetings you set) Number of proposals you closed (ratio of proposals closed) Do the Work. After you know your Law of Averages, you can get to work meeting your sales goals. The more calls you make, the more sales you will make – now you have a clearer picture of how many calls you need to make to hit your numbers. Consider this data according to Hubspot's study. In 2007 it took an average of 3.68 cold call attempts to reach a prospect. Today 8 - that's almost twice as many calls. 44% of us give up after only one attempt. So we need to manage our mindset. Look at the opportunity and stay patient and persistent. You can create your 8 step program to reaching the decision-maker. For example, step one research the client and have a solid VBR. Step two call to set the meeting. Step three email the client. Step four connect on Linkedin or another social channel. Step five send a successful case study from a current client. Improve your Law of Averages. There are several ways you can improve your average and generate more success from your efforts. Own the day. Distractions happen every day to us. Each week, map out your goals and set the agenda for the day. Review your metrics and progress at the end of each day and then at the end of each week. When do you make the call? Improve your averages by calling the client at the right time based on their category. If you are calling on a restaurant, you would not call at noontime when they are busy. You would call at 8 am or 3 pm. What I discovered was Wednesday and Thursday seemed to be the best days of the week for connecting with prospects on the phone. The best hours, 4 pm-5 pm, has the highest engagement. Or call before 8:30 when a company opens, you will likely connect with the business owner. Try to avoid calling between 11 am-2 pm that has proven to be the lowest engagement hours. After you have had some time to familiarize yourself with the Law of Averages, you can use it to improve your sales. This is why I recommend keeping track of your numbers every day, even if you think you already have a good handle on things. Look for small ways to improve your appointment setting, your pitch method, and then use the Law of Averages to determine if you are seeing results and improving your ratios.
