From the Latin Jazz Dance scene in London clubs, the band mixed jazz with Latin dance rhythms and vocals by singers such as Juliet Roberts, Julie Tippetts, Robert Wyatt and Tracy Thorn. This summer editor Juliet Roberts travelled to Hokkaido in northern Japan to visit the Tokachi Millennium Forest. Here she chats to garden and landscape designer Dan Pearson about his involvement in this inspirational project.

New Years was banging from everywhere around the globe this year. You did not have to be there to channel into it. For me, in 7 days, I had that celebration rushing from Belo Horizonte to Tai Pei. They were amazing and they were living for every moment as was I. But now, I had one more stop to go to and give it on NYE; my hometown of NYC, and it was going to be a long and crazy night for sure. Getting on that plane in Taiwan, I knew that I would actually be able to feel my first sunrise of the year and it would continue rising as my set went on, but I would enjoy it for sure when I was done at XL in New York. Since I knew we would be going 'til very late, I decided that after I was sure that I have served them properly with my fully loaded library, that I was going to entertain them in another way musically. XL changed the color and décor of the room and it became a land of classics being played with a rising sun. Perfect. I made selections for my set by going for titles (which I partially obsessed over) that have touched me, changed me or gave me the courage to accept change as I was living here within a talent pool of maestros that is legendary after legendary. Respect to you all. For all my friends and fans out there, please understand, you don’t have to come from New York to feel it, and much of the music originated in other great cities, but they inspired me here and I hope you enjoy this and have a Happy New Year, Tony. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs.We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days.All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics.Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 so I’ll also upload this to the Classic Archive podcast.
