Twenty-five years since it first appeared, LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE: The History of the Disc Jockey (Grove Press; $22 paperback; 672 pages; ISBN: 978-0-8021-6390-5; February 18, 2025) remains the definitive history on the musical outlaw figure who not only revolutionized the music industry but also laid the foundation for modern music as we know it today: the disc jockey. Lively front row history with a riot of firsthand voices, it is an exhilarating dive into the DJ-led evolution that set the beat for clubland and ushered in new, exciting strands of dance music, with firsthand accounts of the births of disco, hip-hop, house, techno, and EDM. Newly calling attention to the women DJs who disrupted the status quo and made a place for themselves in a traditionally all-male guild, this seminal classic is fully refreshed with even more stories, two entirely new chapters ("Jazz-funk - Expansions" and "Woman - Fight the Power"), and a foreword by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE is a riveting and entertaining account of musical history and some of the most legendary parties of the century. The Kelly Alexander Show is thrilled to welcome pop & dance music legends Niki Haris, Donna De Lory and DJ Tracy Young to the show! These three artists came to fame as part of Madonna's elite entourage of talent with Niki & Donna singing and dancing alongside Madonna from the 80's into the 2000's and Tracy spinning tunes for Madonna at parties and events including Madonna's own wedding to Guy Richie. Tracy even won a Grammy Award for her remix of Madonna's "I Rise." Niki, Donna and Tracy have decided to bring their collective talents together and have released a new song called "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" and will be releasing more songs and hopefully even an album! The women share their stories of what it was like working & touring with Madonna, why they decided to team up and release new music, the importance of their LGBTQIA+ fans, what it was like performing at award shows like the Grammys and they even share very personal thoughts about the passing of Madonna's beloved brother Christopher Ciccone. This is the first time these three artists have been interviewed together and we are ecstatic to have them as our guests on The Kelly Alexander Show. Enjoy the conversation and thank you for listening.
Hey beautiful humans, Today I am super proud to be celebrating 1000 days clean of crystal meth !!! And releasing this very special Remix…For those that don't know my journey so far: 10 years ago when I was living in Sydney and Melbourne for several years, I initially got introduced to ice via the dating apps, and subsequently got caught up in a vicious cycle of drug and sex addiction. Because I mainly used as a hook up drug on weekends, this quickly became a regular pattern of abuse that I struggled to break free from. To the point where I wasn't even really enjoying what I was doing anymore. Something had to change! And it most certainly did! My mother passed away. And not long after, I made the decision to relocate to Lismore. Since then it's been one major tree change, three years of local community, connection, reflection, recovery, grief, loss, love, support, and of course the amazing natural healing power of Mother Nature! I'd previously lost many good people in my life, work opportunities, my health, my reputation, and of course a shitload of money due to my addiction. The added stigma surrounding ice is still rife in our community, so I totally understand how very difficult it is to even open up and reach out for help, without being judged. It's hard enough to try and quit crystal meth to get clean. But I am more than happy to be that uncomfortable conversation starter for anyone who needs it. I know that publicly sharing my own personal story has also helped to motivate and inspire other friends to come clean about being clean. Huge kudos to you too! And I hope that continues to be the case moving forward… Massive thanks to all those who have been here with me on this “manic to Magic” journey. You know who you are, and for that I am truly grateful and I love you dearly !!! Easing into my 50s, I'm happy to say that I'm living my best life, so much healthier, happier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually too. Thankfully, Music has always been there, my life passion, and a constant source of happiness. So when I decided to release a commemorative Remix for today, and knowing the power of music and how it connects people, I thought how very fitting it would be to work on “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”. The song is one of my all time faves, and I really hope you love the Deep House treatment I've given it, so enjoy! And as always…Peace, love, and tunes.

The North Wing of The Danny Lane Music Museum is dedicated to Northern Soul. Northern Soul is its own genre of music that grew out of the underground rhythm and soul scene of the late 1960s at venues such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, England (UK). This music and the associated dances and fashions quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs like the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), Catacombs (Wolverhampton), the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent) and Wigan Casino. *** The Northern part of the name refers to where in the UK the popularity first grew. It all started in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s, based on a particular style of black American soul music. A large proportion of Northern soul's original audience came from within the 1960s mod subculture. Northern soul reached the peak of its popularity in the mid- to late-1970s. At this time, there were soul clubs in virtually every major town in the Midlands and the North of England. The three venues regarded as the most important in this decade were the Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent (1971 to 1972), Blackpool Mecca (1971 to 1979) and Wigan Casino (1973 to 1981). *** In the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: the history of the DJ, the authors describe Northern soul as "a genre built from failures", stating: "...Northern Soul was the music made by hundreds of singers and bands who were copying the Detroit sound of Motown pop. Most of the records were complete failures in their own time and place... but in Northern England from the end of the 1960s through to its heyday in the middle 1970s, were exhumed and exalted." Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”.
The electronic dance music industry is known for its superstar DJs and dynamic club culture, its synonymous with partying hard and good times but perhaps not with so well known as the rock and pop music industry for raising money and supporting charity, despite the billions of dollars dance music generates every year (* yes 2020 apart which has been something of a challenging year). My guest this week set out 10 years ago to change this view and make a difference where he saw not enough being done. He set out to challenge existing beliefs about the contribution dance music could make, to show what could be done when a compassionate industry came together behind a clear purpose and to make an impact in the lives of children in crisis all over the world. Jonny Lee is the visionary founder of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life a charitable foundation creating opportunities & fundraising initiatives to enable the dance music industry to make a positive impact in support of children in crisis. Jonny is a dance music pioneer, an acid house missionary, taker of big risks and a bundle of positive energy. We meet up on the cliffs of south east Ibiza, surrounded by whispering pines, bird song and the hum of cicadas. The spot we meet at is a place Jonny gets huge inspiration from. We talk about his mojo journey and what happened to make him realise he just HAD to do more. Also, how his background in organising huge parties all over the world came in very handy for running a charity - where positive intent is met with synchronicity and magnetism. Jonny defines what the art of giving means to him and the difference the charity has made to lives of thousands of children in crisis. We talk about the last Set For Love project - live stream events bringing DJs of all levels together to fundraise for emergency appeals during lockdown. You can join the likes of Carl Cox and Nightmares on Wax by getting involved in the forthcoming Set For Love on November 20th - which is International Children's Day. You can find out loads more about LNADJ at the website Also give them a follow on Insta @lnadj_charity or their Facebook page And as I also mentioned last week, there is now some music to go with these mojo stories. I've asked all my guests to date to select just one song that really fuels their mojo. You can find the Spotify playlist here - Jonny's pick is a cracker! Sysense started doing this type of thing when he was sixteen and was having a very difficult time in his life and was contemplating taking his life. He remembers walking into a dance club in Houston, Tx and hearing The Smith’s – How Soon Is Now and watching the people on the dance floor react and move to what the Dj was doing. Sysense was amazed at how much fun the people were having and seeing the smiles that were across their faces. At that moment Sysense knew what he wanted to do .He wanted to make people happy and have them forget their problems even if for just a little while. Sysense went out and bought turntables, some records, and started teaching him self how to blend the songs together. Sysense knew nothing about what I was doing and could not beat-match to save his life. Thankfully, he had met a Dj that took him under his wing and began teaching him the basics of beat-matching, blending, and the proper use of a mixer. Sysense then started listening to mix tapes of other Dj’s to get more of a understanding of what was happening and the journey they were trying to convey through music. Sysense remembers that he would practice all the time, recording everything that he did on whatever medium there was available at that time, tape machine, reel to reel, and the old trusty VCR, which was his favorite recording method of them all. This allowed him to hear the good along with bad (and there was more bad then good) and to hone his skills even more. Sysense was now ready to take his message to the masses and let them be part of his journey. He started playing live at a little bar/club that had a small but loyal following of electronic music. The people were very forgiving of his mistakes and allowed Sysense the room to grow his skills even more. Sysense continued to spin at that bar and for that owner for about 10yrs and Sysense thanks him to this day for being patient and giving him the opportunity. The rest of the story is pretty much ancient history, as Sysense now looks forward to taking the next steps to bring his message and journey to even more people around the globe. And a quick final note from Sysense: I hope that over the years I have done what I intended to do, and also maybe helped someone along the way just as the music and that Dj did for me so many years ago. The term – Last Night A Dj Saved My Life – is true in every aspect for me. I hope that we can keep spreading the vibe of love and good music around the world and beyond. Sincerely, James Sysense DeRosier.

This allowed him to hear the good along with bad (and there was more bad then good) and to hone his skills even more.
