Soon after, he began to make loud noises, so his loving parents put music instruments in front of him. It was a good plan. He grew up in that grand tradition of staying up late & singing real loud. Although he's since moved north, the humid south remains in heart and sinus cavities.  Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, and Rosanne Cash in addition to his solo performances.   Check out Michael at his website here! This week, Mike & Oteil are joined by Banjo virtuoso Tony Trischka, considered among the very best pickers and one of the instrument's top teachers, notably having taught innovative banjo player Béla Fleck. Tony shares the unlikely story of how he was inspired to pick up the banjo as a politically active 12 year old in Syracuse. Tony also talks about hopping in a VW van to attend the first 3-day Bluegrass festival in 1965, racial tensions in the South mixing with hippie culture, and going backstage at a Bob Dylan show at 13. Tony Trischka was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1949, and raised in a home filled with music. Trischka fell in love with the banjo by way of the Kingston Trio's 1963 recording of “M.T.A.,” and was able to experience the New York-centered folk revival by trekking to the Newport Folk Festival in the early to mid-'60s. His work with his pal Steve Martin has helped the banjo gain a wider audience and deeper understanding. Trischka's Grammy-nominated album Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular, released in 2007, and Great Big World, from 2014, feature Martin within a mix of veterans and up-and-coming luminaries. He produced Martin's Grammy-nominated Rounder album from 2011, Rare Bird Alert, which touts performances by the Steep Canyon Rangers, Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks. His forthcoming album, Shall We Hope, is a visionary exploration of Civil War history featuring an all-star cast—from Michael Daves and Maura O'Connell to the Femmes, Catherine Russell, Guy Davis, the actor John Lithgow and many others.  In many ways, Trischka's collaborators join him to pay homage to an architect of progressive bluegrass—an invaluable pioneer who absorbed the slings and arrows of roots traditionalists and proved that acoustic music could accommodate imagination and individualism.   This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. In the first half of this week's Snacky Tunes, Greg and Darin catch up with Tracy Jane Young and Josh Grinker, the creative forces behind Kings County Imperial, a reinterpreted Central Chinese restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Rather than striving strictly for "authenticity," the menu is all about making an emotional connection between the food on the plate and the people who made it. After the break, we have musical guest Michael Daves, whose two-album set Orchids and Violence is out now on Nonesuch Records. Both discs of Orchids and Violence are produced by Daves and have identical track listings of mostly traditional bluegrass songs. The first features straightforward interpretations of them and was recorded live to tape in a 19th-century church by Daves and a band of roots-music innovators: bassist Mike Bub, violinist Brittany Haas, mandolinist Sarah Jarosz, and Punch Brothers banjo player Noam Pikelny. The second disc was recorded in Daves's home studio and includes bass, drums, and electric guitar, mostly played by Daves, and takes a raw, experimental rock approach to the same old-time material. Both discs were mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings of Leon, Danger Mouse) and have a special guest appearance from Tony Trischka on cello banjo, and Daves's wife Jessi Carter played bass on the electric disc.

Paul saddles up with Chris and Shane Houghton to discuss the first trade paperback collection of their wild and woolly western Reed Gunther. Originally branded as an all-ages comic, the brothers recently decided to remove that tag and promote the book a little differently. Why the change? And what steps have they taken to illustrate–to retailers as well as readers–that their ongoing saga of a Bear-Riding Cowboy is more than just kid stuff? Chris Thile enjoyed massive success at a very early age, selling millions with the prodigiously gifted bluegrass band Nickel Creek. But he's remained remarkably level-headed and creatively ambitious in the five years since the group's demise, exploring his more progressive leanings in Punch Brothers and teaming up with Michael Daves for a more traditional collection paying tribute to past bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and fellow Newport artist Earl Scruggs. Sleep With One Eye Open, their album together, may look to the past, but make no mistake: This is blazingly intense music, and it shows live when they take the stage at the 2011 Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
