I've been researching how smell affects memory for over 35 years. I'm here to teach you more about how smell could improve your memory. Here are our topics of discussion: [1:54] Tell us who you are and your interest in brain health? [2:26] The problem with Alzheimer's is that it's a huge problem for people that are entering their sixth decade of life or later, and just losing your memory can seem like the world is ending. Can you shed some light on why that might be? [5:50] So why is that system so unique among all the senses, Michael? [7:15] So is this a slow decline or is this pretty rapid once you hit 60 to 65? [7:50] And it seems like many people got their sense of smell back. I don't know if it came back 100%, but I don't know if you have any data or if you've heard any instances of people being able to recover their olfactory sense. [9:20] What prompted the study in the first place? How did you know to go down this path? [11:18] Is it possible for humans to reverse the damage in the olfactory system, Which would require or necessitate rebuilding of neurons in some capacity, no? [12:25] How did you design this study and what did you see from the start to finish of the participants that were in that study? [14:32] So this was in six months, and we don't know what might happen if people continue to do this every night for, let's say, two years or three years, or if they stop doing it just in three months. That data is not present yet, is it? [16:17] So what is the rationale or how do you come up with 40 odors? I didn't even know there were 40 essential oils. I'm assuming that's what you did. But is it only good odors? Could you have dirty, smelly socks or dirty, smelly humans as an odor? [18:52] Can reversing olfactory loss help reduce inflammation and the risk for diseases like heart disease or cancer? [19:43] How can younger individuals (30s, 40s, 50s) use this technology? Is it one odor per night or all 40? [23:58] Can this treatment reverse dementia or delay the onset of memory loss? [25:51] Could this device be as effective as meditation for reducing stress? [26:50] When will the device be available to the public?
Memory loss is often cited as one of the most worrying aspects of growing older. But what if the section of the brain that's responsible for memory could be stimulated by simply sniffing a few pleasant odors? There is extensive research pointing to a relationship between exposure to different smells and memory improvement. A clinical trial led by Prof. Michael Leon at the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California, Irvine, suggests the loss of olfaction can cause the memory parts of the brain to deteriorate, while adding more smell experiences can improve memory. The research also explores the use of environmental enrichment, as it's known, to treat neurological disorders like autism. Prof. Leon's team used diffusers to release various essential oils while participants slept, leading to improved memory and sleep. The results suggest that exposure to smells like orange and lemon significantly improves memory in older adults, with some experiencing a 226% increase.Researchers have developed a device called Memory Air that automatically emits odors while individuals sleep, providing the brain with the necessary stimulation. In this interview we discuss the evidence and explore why such an approach could be valuable not only in improving memory but overall well-being.▸ Read a transcript of this conversation + additional show-notes DISCOUNTSThis site includes affiliate links from which we derive a small commission, if you click on the product links and use the code LLAMA at checkout. What if the path to delaying the onset of dementia symptoms begins at the nose? It is a doorway that the research of Dr. Michael Leon opened with a 2023 study on the power of olfaction enrichment to influence memory function and brain health. The findings drew wide acclaim and interest when his results found that stimulation of our sense of smell with essential oils had a profound impact on memory, cognition, and language recall. Our conversation with Leon on STEM-Talk Episode 164 is available now wherever you enjoy podcasts. Leon's long research career has focused on the influence of environmental enrichment on neurological function, disease, and disorders. He has studied the benefits of sensory-motor stimulation for children with autism spectrum disorder, for the treatment of anorexia and for those with dementia and neurological conditions. He is a professor emeritus in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California Irvine, where his Leon Lab has focused on studying the benefits of increased sensory-motor activity in children with autism spectrum disorder. The work that the Leon Lab is doing is fascinating, and the applications this olfaction stimulation study are potentially important and wide-reaching. Overview: [00:02:33] Dawn starts the interview by asking Michael how he got interested in science. [00:003:59] Dawn asks how Michael got involved in studying olfaction. [00:04:36] Dawn asks about Michael's research on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which resulted in a series of studies from 2013, 2015, and 2016. [00:08:11] Dawn asks how Michael took the principles of environmental enrichment from his work on autism and applied them to his aging research, which began in 2018. [00:09:28] Ken asks Michael about his 2023 study titled “Olfactory enrichment using an odorant diffuser improves memory and modifies the uncinate fasciculus in older adults.” [00:11:25] Ken asks Michael why he chose the specific seven odors that he used in the study. [00:12:24] Ken poses a listener question about whether or not a CPAP machine, which many older Americans use, would complicate Michael's olfactory enrichment protocol, or if it is possible that the CPAP machine and the protocol can be used together. [00:13:35] Dawn asks Michael what the selection and recruitment process was like for this study. [00:14:48] Ken asks, in light of Michael's research on the connection between memory and olfaction, what the potential consequences might be for people who reported loss or diminishing sense of smell following a COVID-19 infection. [00:16:51] Ken asks if any of the olfactory remediation kits have shown promise in restoring lost olfaction following COVID-19. [00:17:32] Ken asks what the mechanism is behind the loss of olfaction following menopause. [00:19:43] Dawn asks Michael how his olfactory enrichment as a memory intervention compares to other memory interventions like dancing, music and audio books. [00:20:22] Ken asks Michael what the limitations of the study were, as well as what kind of follow up he is planning. [00:23:14] Ken asks if there is any promise in applying Michael's olfactory therapy to mild TBI. [00:24:10] Dawn asks Michael to describe how the brain processes information while asleep versus while awake, and if this influenced his study. [00:25:53] Dawn mentions that the participants of Michael's 2023 study were healthy, with no signs of dementia. She then asks Michael if he can speak to the potential use of olfactory enrichment for adults living with a dementia diagnosis. [00:26:41] Ken asks if this olfactory enrichment approach is efficacious for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. [00:27:10] Ken mentions the difficulty in treating Alzheimer's pharmacologically due to the varied causes of the disease among individuals. [00:29:10] Ken asks Michael if there are environmental protocols other than olfactory enrichment that s...

So it's not just that they're experiencing a nice odor, it's that it's actually changing the memory centers of their brain.” “I'm fascinated. I mean I've never, of the many, many, many things that I've heard about about smelling and fragrances and scent over the past 30 years of my career, I've never heard this and it's obviously not the angle that we usually take when we create a fragrance, but it is incredibly fascinating.”Get in Touch with Dr. Michael Leon:Memory Airmleon@uci.eduMichael's StudyGet in Touch with Fabrice CroiséScents of WoodInstagram

The experiences we create in baby's space have a profound impact on the way our baby's brains develop. In this episode, Shazi talks to pediatric neurologist Dr. Suzanne Goh, who explains the fascinating way that our brains develop in utero and after birth – how every connection sets the stage for how we learn. Dr. Goh explains the simple and accessible things we can all do, as parents, to create the most optimal environment for cognition and focus. Shazi also speaks with Dr. Michael Leon, professor of neurobiology and behavior at the UC, Irvine, about the latest research on neuroplasticity – the brain's ability to change and adapt as a result of experience. Dr. Leon also explains what the latest research tells us about the promising potential of sensory enrichment, and how we can use it therapeutically or even proactively. He talks about how exposure to novelty and "just right" challenges can improve cognition, memory, and even emotional regulation. She also checks in with the Founders of Fatty15, who have discovered the first new fatty acid in 90 years, called C-15 – and they discuss what this discovery means for brain health. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the dusty gilt horns of the straggling woodbine, seemed to make the stillness more oppressive. The dim roar of London was like the bourdon note of a distant organ. These lines, from the opening pages of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, emphasize unseen background noises as constituting an environment. The bees, working through the grass, create the biological condition of possibility for nature and the world, especially in their unseen state. And, so too, does the roar of London create the background chatter that allows the plot of the novel to take off. In this week's installment of Poetism, we'd like to ask a similar question about our own age: what is the background noise that has made all this––society, labor, world–– possible? Michael Leon Thomas, a professor of philosophy at Susquehanna University, joins Josh in the studio to tackle the vicissitudes and interisies of Alfred North Whitehead's conception of philosophy alongside Pharoah Sanders' 1973 album Izipho Zam, particularly the 28-minute titular track which closes the album. For Whitehead, a worldview is always in the process of emerging, and our language needs to follow suit. A reformed logician, Whitehead balks against a wholly systematic view of philosophy, suggesting that it is in the gaps, silences, and wetness of philosophy that something happens. And to figure out what this something might be, we turn to Pharoah Sanders' enigmatic, if expansive, composition which traverses through various languages, instruments, and cosmologies. The bandleader himself cannot be heard until the last third of the track, creating and leaving space (a society?) in which music creation can happen. In other words, it's a slow reconditioning process. Along the way, Michael and I talk about why he's decided to spend his life with philosophy, how experience feeds into our listening habits, the postcolony of American, and why philosophy might have more in common with poetry than one might assume. To read more about Michael's work on music, check out an interview in Aesthetics with Birds. Here is the 2016 Pharoah Sanders performance mentioned in the episode. *** For Poetism, stay tuned for next week's episode on Brigit Pegeen Kelly and the Cocteau Twins with Scott Stevens
