It's just not one election that picks the president. It's 51. Every state and Washington D.C. has its own rules and deadlines for voting. And in most states, early voting is already underway.More than 4 in 10 voters cast their ballots by mail in 2020. That's according to an analysis from MIT's Election Data and Science Lab.Nearly 4 million mail-in ballots have already been cast in this election. That's only a fraction of the more than 53 million voters have requested so far – about a quarter of all expected voters. And the requests are split evenly between political parties so far. That's according to The New York Times. We discuss the role mail-in ballots could play in determining the outcome of the election. Want to support 1A? But the real highlight of this episode is our brand-new feature, “Grandad's Science Lab.” In this segment, Ellis' grandad takes the mic to unravel the mysteries of the football field, starting with the science behind curling a ball. How do players like Messi and Beckham make it look so easy? What are the forces at play when the ball bends around defenders? Grandad breaks it all down, offering insights into the physics of spin, aerodynamics, and technique that might just change the way you see (and play) the game. So, whether you're here for the football banter, the deep dive into history, or a bit of science that could improve your free kicks, this episode of “Ey Up Ellis!” has something for everyone. Grab your headphones and get ready for an entertaining and enlightening journey through the world of football! Hope you like it!

Automata, a company that combines software and hardware to automate science labs around the globe, has raised $40 million in an equity-based round of funding.
At a San Francisco Chamber of Commerce breakfast last month, Mayor London Breed made a curious pitch for the future of the troubled Westfield San Francisco Centre in Downtown.“We have to look at Westfield mall, not as a mall losing stores, which probably most people didn't even shop in, but as a place ripe for reimagining from science to technology to lab space,” Breed said. She echoed those statements during a radio interview last week, noting the potential for the property—a 1.2 million-square-foot mall in the middle of Market Street—to be used by higher education. In retrospect, the comments read as softening the blow of Westfield's decision, revealed days later, to give up the property because of declining sales, foot traffic and occupancy. Part of Breed's argument is that lab and research and development space have far lower vacancy rates than the broader office market. San Francisco's 1 million square feet of lab inventory pales in comparison with traditional life science centers like the Peninsula (17 million square feet) or even Oakland (7.8 million square feet).Support the show
