This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Lexia Learning. The webinar recording can be accessed here.Understanding “The Reading Brain” can help educators enormously in their implementation of Science-of-Reading-based instructional strategies and student support. Yet, academics alone are not enough to accelerate learning. We need students who are supported in all aspects of their development to achieve success. We often use the term “resilience” to describe how students overcome challenges in the pursuit of academic success. While this mental and emotional elasticity is touted as a positive skill, is it really the answer for students, or do we need to dig deeper into the systems and structures that require this resilience while offering research-backed, effective instruction?Listen to this edWeb podcast with Lexia's Senior Education Advisor, Kerri Larkin, and Resiliency, Inc.'s President and CEO, Horacio Sanchez, as they discuss brain function during reading, the role resilience plays in education, and how the Science of Reading can support learning for all students. You learn about brain processes during reading, what resilience is and how it is often misused, and how educators can activate the Science of Reading to better serve their students. This edWeb podcast is of interest to PreK-12 teachers, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders.Lexia Learning Lexia is all for literacy because we know that literacy can and should be for all.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Host: Viv aka Sober_iThrive Guests: Lisa and Jen Lisa's Bio: Hi, I'm Lisa, aka PizzaLisa on the I Am Sober App. I'm a mom, wife, restaurant owner and a sober alcoholic. With a 'work hard, play hard' mentality and an ego as big as a house, I bulldozed my way through life. Being powerful was my goal. I now know the only thing I can control is my own actions. Not my husband, not my employees and certainly not my drinking. I've found humility through working the steps of AA, being involved in the sober community, working with a sponsor, service and consistent self reflection. I've been in recovery since January 24, 2022. I am now the best version of myself and continue to gradually grow-- one day at a time. Jen's Bio: My name is Jen aka GrowinginGrace&Gratitude on the I Am Sober App. I am a wife, mom, full-time worker, and someone who abused alcohol daily. Driven by my personal struggles and a longing for connection, I joined the sobertown zooms and embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery. Since December 28, 2021, I am living the AF lifestyle, and learning to make everyday count. I started a blog Growing in Grace & Gratitude, where I delve into various aspects of spirituality and sobriety. If your brain controls everything in your body and mind, does it also somehow affect your relationship with God? Can brain function affect spirituality? Today's guest, Dr. Daniel Amen, is a physician, child and adult psychiatrist, brain imaging specialist, bestselling author, and the CEO and medical director of Amen Clinics. Dr. Amen takes a holistic, practical approach in linking a dynamic feedback loop that exists between the brain and the events in our lives. Today he discusses the neurological connection we have to our souls as well as offers tips for a healthier brain, no matter what our age. Dr. Daniel Amen has studied the brains of loving people, as well as evil people. His research has shown that racism and hatred often involve problems in the brain. People like this may hold grudges as they can't let things go. They cannot change their opinion because of brain function. Dr. Amen has compared the brains of inmates, including murderers, and tests have shown clear deficits in the activity in their brains. If they are medicated, they may become calmer and more understanding. He further discusses the importance of examining our thoughts. He suggests writing out what you are thinking. Must you believe every thought you have? Try talking back to depressive thoughts and try to think in a more positive direction. This will start to balance the brain function. You can apply these methods to begin to gain a sense of relief. He also discusses the importance of physical exercise, as well as learning something new. This is so imperative, especially as we age. It increases blood flow to the brain and can be used to help prevent memory loss. Dr. Amen also discusses supplements, including Ginkgo Biloba, St John's Wort, and Vitamin E. If you would like to try supplementation, always be sure to consult with your healthcare practitioner first. Dr. Amen has also studied how prayer and meditation improve brain function. He suggests teaching children this as a method of focus, rather than playing video games which has the opposite effect.

Neurometabolic Integration On this episode of Your Health Reset, Sinclair Kennally invites Dr. Peter Kahn to discuss the fascinating concept of the gut-brain axis and functional medicine. Dr. Kahn, an expert in this field, sheds light on the intricate connections between the brain, immune system, and the gut. Dysfunction in any one of these can lead to a cascade of neurological, immune, and digestive symptoms. Dr. Kahn presents a simplified roadmap for addressing chronic illness by targeting its root causes. He highlights the critical role of fuel delivery in healing the brain, immune system, and gut. Insufficient energy production and fuel delivery hinder effective detoxification and infection-fighting capabilities within the body. By addressing fuel delivery issues, such as stabilizing blood sugar levels, as the first step before other interventions like hormone replacement, individuals can avoid ineffective treatments and unnecessary detox reactions. However, it is equally important to identify underlying causes like adrenal issues or chronic viral infections to achieve long-term improvement. With the right adjustments, individuals can experience a significant enhancement in their well-being. SummaryPhosphocreatine is a molecule that can recharge ADP into ATP. This provides energy to skeletal muscle and the brain. Dietary and supplemental creatine can raise the bodies stores of phosphocreatine, providing additional energy. In this podcast, we discuss creatine, what is is, how it works, why it is useful, and how to supplement it. Morbidity and MortalityAfter age 30, most people loose around 5% of their muscle mass per decade. Six million people in the United States are diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia and this number is increasing every year. As such, preserving muscle and brain function are cornerstone of all anti-aging strategies. StoryCreatine was first discovered in muscle in 1832. For over 100 years, it has been known that supplementing creatine increases phosphocreatine levels in skeletal muscle. Since the early 1990s, creatine has been marked as a dietary supplement. The use of creatine has become extremely popular over the last 3 decades and its potential benefits to cognitive and nerve function have only recently been explored/discovered. Key Points1. Creatine is a small amino acid like, nitrogenous molecule found in skeletal muscle and the brain.2. Creatine is phosphorylated to phosphocreatine by creatine kinase. Phosphocreatine can then transfer a phosphate to ADP, making ATP. ATP is a molecule that is the main source of energy for the body.3. Improved strength, bone health, cognitive function, recovery from TBI, heart health, and improvements in triglyceride are often seen with creatine supplementation.4. Supplementing 5 to 10g of creatine a day should be considered in many individuals, including non-athletes. Creatine has an excellent track record for safety, but possible side effects will be discussed.5. Muscle cramps are common when taking creatine. Stay hydrated and consume adequate salt. Be careful not to overuse your muscles or injure yourself when taking creatine. Every single cell needs NAD+. It's what you're doing to transfer energy into a cell from the mitochondria and get each cell to work properly. If our building blocks, our cells, are not working because they don't have the energy, we definitely won't have the energy to go through with normal life, normal functions, with being truly healthy. - Caspar Szulc Live Life Well from Sunrise to Sunset Save 20% with code "WELLNESSFORCE" on everyone's favorite Superfoods brand, ORGANIFI, including their Sunrise to Sunset Bundle and their Women's Power Stack that includes HARMONY + GLOW for true hormonal balance and great health radiating through your beautiful skin. It's happening without us doing anything. But it's taking up energy. You need to power the brain. NAD+ is probably the most critical element in powering the brain. If you look at it from that standpoint of "what do you need to have a productive day?" To have a day where you don't lack energy and mental clarity? All these things that so many people are facing right now. That's NAD+." - Caspar Szulc Your Diet + Lifestyle Should Matter to Doctors "Doctors don't believe nutrition as anything. That is not a factor at all. We've got drugs, we've got surgery, you're good. You don't need to talk to the patient even about their diet or their lifestyle. If you changed the educational system where doctors came out and started more on this functional basis of "tell me about you and what you're doing on a daily basis, I'll show you the results of the labs and we're going to meet in the middle somewhere." We're going to plan something where we start with lifestyle changes. We don't start with heavy drugs and cutting you open. Those are the last resorts. And if you look at medicine, that's their first resort. That's disease care medicine, that's not health care." - Caspar Szulc Biohacking vs Modern Medicine "I truly believe biohacking is just the difference between where medicine should be and just the starting point. What I mean by that is you usually biohack when you're healthy and get super healthy from it. Whereas in medicine you usually start at a sick point and you get to a healthier point." - Caspar Szulc Improving 1% Every Day Is Enough "If you made just 1% improvement every day for a year, at the end of the year, you'd be 37 times better as a whole because of that 1%. Don't think that you have to change so much in one day. Don't think if you can't sleep, you're eating poorly, you have these symptoms, and you're fatigued, that you need to change that within a month. The reality of the story is you've probably been leading up to that for years and years. So it's going to take some time to unravel. And that's ok." - Caspar Szulc Our Health + The Health of The World "We are the microbiome of the world. If we are unhealthy, the world is unhealthy. If we are unhealthy, we don't care that we use plastic everywhere and that we corrupt everything with chemicals. I don't want to put chemicals in my body. I won't give my money to people that produce chemicals. That's then going to the environment and kill it. We're part of the environment. We detach ourselves from nature. We're one and the same. You want to be an eco-warrior? Start with yourself, start with your health." - Caspar Szulc Links From Today's Show Nadovim - 20% off with code "JOSH20" 482 Dave Asprey | Advanced Biohacking For Body Mind & Spirit: How To Train A Healthy Brain, Boost Your Flow State + Remove False Beliefs 462 Ben Greenfield: Should You STOP Using Plant Medicines? Huberman Lab Key Takeaways Neuralink makes neural implants and delivers with a robotic insertion device that helps place tiny electrodes smaller than a human hair throughout a region of the brainNeuralink goals: Present – repair motor movement in people with spinal cord injury or paralysis using an external mouse and computer software to decode motor intentions (not connecting brain and motor movement just yet, for now, the focus is on establishing the agency in the movement of things in the world and eventually the body)Midterm – humans regaining control over some of the ways the brain goes wrong through addiction, depression, obesity, etc.Long-term – full expansion of human cognition into AI without limit, unrestricted communication (without phone), banding human minds togetherNeuroplasticity decreases with age but technology isn't necessarily the answer here because it involves altering the entire brain whereas machines are highly specialized and focusDon't worry about your Bluetooth headphones! It's unlikely there's enough energy to produce any harmAlcohol use is the most common source of brain damage many of us volunteer for – for every drink you have there is a linear increase in brain atrophy and neuron deathRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, my guest is Matthew MacDougall, MD, the head neurosurgeon at Neuralink. Dr. MacDougall trained at the University of California, San Diego and Stanford University School of Medicine and is a world expert in brain stimulation, repair and augmentation. He explains Neuralink's mission and projects to develop and use neural implant technologies and robotics to 1) restore normal movement to paralyzed patients and those with neurodegeneration-based movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson's, Huntington's Disease) and to repair malfunctions of deep brain circuitry (e.g., those involved in addiction). He also discusses Neuralink's efforts to create novel brain-machine interfaces (BMI) that enhance human learning, cognition and communication as a means to accelerate human progress. Dr. MacDougall also explains other uses of bio-integrated machines in daily life; for instance, he implanted himself with a radio chip into his hand that allows him to open specific doors, collect and store data and communicate with machines and other objects in unique ways. Listeners will learn about brain health and function through the lens of neurosurgery, neurotechnology, clinical medicine and Neuralink's bold and unique mission.
