Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. We talk about his nascent passion for perfumes, why people are so reluctant to smell things, and the overlap between smell, resonance, and consciousness. How do you turn a song into a scent? And what does music teach us about scent-making and its history? We take a deep dive into these questions with Saskia Wilson-Brown, whose mission is to disrupt, decolonize, and democratize perfumery. Saskia, who is Bay Area-bred, is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction in Los Angeles, a nonprofit art studio that makes perfumery accessible to all. Listen as she takes us on an aromatic journey through five songs that relate to fragrance-making and its global origins, modern scent practies, and the complex world of naturals versus synthetics. Saskia's Selections: 1.) Omar Souleyman- "Warni Warni" 2.) Charles Trenet - "La Mer" 3.) MC Solaar - "Nouveau Western" 4.) Otis Redding - "Cigarettes and Coffee" 5.) And what role could it play in future mobility? Our guest on this episode is Tristan Rousselle, founder and CEO of Aryballe, a digital olfaction firm that uses biochemical sensors, advanced optics, and machine learning to detect odour and turn it into data. This data is worth little, however, without a database behind it, and Aryballe's USP is a searchable digital library of smells. In this episode, we talk about Aryballe's digital nose technology, the origins of the company, how digital olfaction can be used in automotive and future mobility applications, domestic robots with noses in their fingers, and of course, cheese, wine, and fish odours.Connect with Tristan on LinkedInSHOW NOTESHumans Can Identify More Than 1 Trillion Smellshttps://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/humans-can-identify-more-1-trillion-smellsEuropean Union-funded Rose project, in which Aryballe is a lead participant (Restoring Odorant detection and recognition in Smell dEficits)https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/964529Moorfields patient receives world's first 3D printed eyehttps://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/news/moorfields-patient-receives-world-s-first-3d-printed-eye?Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2004 awarded jointly to Richard Axel and Linda Buck for their discoveries of “odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system.” https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2004/press-release/  You can subscribe to Ride: The Urban Mobility Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. Here are five crucial takeaways from the research that can be practically implemented by those engaged in the field of scent work: It may be beneficial to let go of pre-existing notions about canine olfaction and relearn everything from the ground up. Your human sense of smell, to a certain extent, might not be drastically different from a dog's. Make sure to enjoy the process. It is vital that your training environment aligns with your real operational setting. Ensure that the odor used for training mathced the one used in actual operational settings. Dr. Hall is an Associate Professor of Companion Animal Science at Texas Tech University and the Director of the Canine Olfaction Research and Education Laboratory in the Department of Animal Science. He earned his PhD at the University of Florida, specializing in Behavior Analysis and canine olfaction. Following his doctoral studies, he continued as a postdoc at Arizona State University, investigating the optimization of training to enhance canines' detection of homemade explosives. At Texas Tech, his work continues to explore canine olfactory perception and how experience influences odour perception. His lab also investigates predictors and correlates of problem behaviour, behavioural predictors of working aptitude, and the relationship between behaviour and health using advanced statistical models.

Huberman Lab Key Takeaways The human sense of smell is innately extremely sensitive and can be trained to be even more sensitive, especially in the absence of other senses (like vision or hearing)Every time you meet someone you are taking chemicals from that person and applying it to your own body to process information about that person – this may explain why some people become “fast friends” or click right awayIf you lose your sense of smell for 1-1.5 years, it's unlikely you'll ever get it back; it's a ‘use it or lose it' systemLoss of smell is an early indicator of neurological degeneration and diseaseWe're constantly shifting our nasal cycle AKA which nostril we use most through a mechanism driven by the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous systemInformation processing & cognition is linked to our olfactory systemWe are always sensing our own odor clouds to change our cognition and behavior – whether you realize it or notIn our most basic behaviors, we follow our nose not our eyes: if a food is visually appealing but smells bad, we are less likely to eat it; we'll be more attracted to a romantic partner who smells pleasant regardless of looks versus a potential partner who looks nice but smells badThe future of digitized olfaction may be used in medical diagnoses (but nowhere in the near future)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, my guest is Noam Sobel, PhD, professor of neurobiology in the department of brain sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dr. Sobel explains his lab's research on the biological mechanisms of smell (“olfaction”) and how sensing odorants and chemicals in our environment impacts human behavior, cognition, social connections, and hormones. He explains how smell is a crucial component of “social sensing” and how we use olfaction when meeting new people to determine things about their physiology and psychology, and he explains how this impacts friendships and romantic partners. He explains how smell influences emotions, hormone levels, memories and the relationship between breathing and autonomic homeostasis. He describes how smell-based screening tests can aid disease diagnosis and explains his lab's work on digitization of smell — which may soon allow online communication to include “sending of odors” via the internet. In this episode, Frauke sits down with Israeli-based writer, perfumer and community organizer Nuri McBride to discuss the intersection of death and olfaction. Nuri shares her life journey that led to the work that she's doing now, including working in refugee resettlement and torture treatment primarily in Kenya, Thailand, Israel, and the United States, as well as later joining a Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) and becoming a Metaheret. She explains what death and scent have in common in Western culture (hint: both are ignored and heavily sanitized). She also discusses the concept of "death positive" and argues for the need to teach death literacy instead. Nuri talks about using art in her death meditation workshops to help people become more comfortable with the idea of death, and shares why the concept of the brevity of time, and the immediacy of pleasure, are so critically important to understand and embrace. Nuri also gives a global perspective on the intersection of death customs/rituals and scent, revealing the many ways cultures use scent to create space around special occasions like death. This is a conversation that will certainly leave you with new perspectives on death and the positive role olfaction can play. Visit Nuri's website. In Part 2 of a two-part series, Frauke sits down with renowned brain expert Professor James Goodwin to talk about brain health and olfaction. Dr. Goodwin explains the link between your sense of smell and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and surprises us with the revelation that "we're conceived old." He shares the good news that although the brain does deteriorate physically over time, we can overcome this, and even reverse aging. He then explains a series of measures we can take to improve brain health, including using our sense of smell and essential oils. Dr. Goodwin also talks about how we can improve working memory, but there's a catch, so pay close attention. This episode will leave you feeling optimistic that we have more control than we think. In Part I of a two-part series, Frauke sits down with renowned brain expert Professor James Goodwin to give a historical perspective on our understanding of the brain and sense of smell (because smelling is in the brain). Dr. Goodwin shares how the scientific community evolved in their perception of the brain and olfactory system, what evolutionary role our sense of smell has played to make us who we are today, and why smelling is so different to our other senses (and other mammals). This episode is rich with important facts and stories of castrated pigs, the smell of blood, the Berlin Wall, and tamping rods blown through heads which will, no doubt, leave you very intrigued. At the end Dr. Goodwin shares the three biggest scientific findings in the last 20 years that have revolutionized how we look at brain health, which will definitely make you curious for Part II to come. In this episode of K9 Conservationists, Kayla speaks with Ann McGloon from Seeking Scent about precision tracking and using hide placement to get the most learning application for your dogs. Science Highlight: Wildlife detection dog training: A case study on achieving generalization between target odor variations while retaining specificity All dogs know how to sniff. Do they all know how to problem-solve? A lot of dogs, especially pet dogs, have forgotten how to use their nose and their olfactory abilities Depends on the dog, but sometimes they need to be encouraged to problem solve. What concepts can we teach our detection dogs by using hide placement? Why would we want to use placement to teach these skills? Olfaction isn't the only cue dogs are using to solve the problem. Location, location, location. Train the environment they are going to be searching. This will help create more efficient searches because you are giving them exposure to what they are going to be experiencing on the field. Patreon Questions: Janna: How do we incorporate handler movement and hide placement for training? Especially with the goal of accurate but effectively progressing through searches in wilderness? Megan: How do you teach the dog to differentiate between visual aids and odor? For instance, I came across a company selling scent work hides, but they're in fun shapes and bright colors, which may make the hide more noticeable. If you use things like that in training, how do you guarantee that the dog is searching for the odor and not searching for the hide itself? Megan: Odor contamination is a big issue in the competition scent work world. Is this a concern in conservation detection? Can odor contamination in the search environment be used to teach the dog to differentiate between residual odor and the actual source of odor?
