In this Episode, my guest is Abe Smith. Abe is currently Head of International at Zoom, where he oversees the business, AKA spreading happiness, globally in EMEA, APAC, Japan and Latin America. Over the past few years and throughout the pandemic, Abe has overseen an unprecedented amount of growth and challenge, as Zoom has become a verb and as the technology has taken a central role in the daily lives of businesses, governments, schools, and individuals all around the world. Prior to taking on this role, Abe was President of EMIA at Cision, and has held senior leadership roles focused on emerging markets at Oracle, Badgeville, Mindjet, Cisco and Webex. Abe has established a tremendously successful track record as an international commercial leader and operator, scaling up teams in emerging markets for well over 15 years. See below for the topics we covered during this conversation. How and why Zoom became the verb for videoconferencing despite all the competition in this space The mindset and commitment needed within Zoom to keep the platform and operations running throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Responding to huge spikes in demand and never before imagined user scenarios Benchmarking where Zoom was before the pandemic, and how much the company has scaled since then Tactical questions on international expansion - when is it the right time for companies to begin, and what are the pre-reqs? The value of starting with lower complexity markets The role of the pioneer, and setting the foundations for a continental strategy Factors to consider when to move into more complex but large or strategically important markets The level of localization needed to begin selling internationally in the early days, and over time as the sales organization matures The extra-challenging expectations often placed on remote sales teams Ways to create transparency and visibility for remote teams, and to help the organization think from the perspective of those outside of HQ Ways to embrace regional tribes within the company while reinforcing values globally The most important values inside of Zoom, and what it has been like to find and onboard the right people during this period of hyper-growth Speed of Trust - required reading at Zoom Beyond advertising - the importance of product and PR when building a brand like Zoom Advice for a founder or CEO before going into their first international market What it's meant to Abe to be part of Zoom during the pandemic, professionally and personally

CFO Thought Leader

Had Valerie Burman entered the CFO office a decade ago, you wonder whether the role would be as good a match for the accomplished finance executive as it appears to be today. Back in 2007, after working nearly a decade in M&A as an investment banker, Burman exited a banking career to take on a corporate development role at Business Objects, a French software company that was soon to be acquired by SAP. Post acquisition, Burman quickly found a groundswell of opportunities coming her way inside SAP, where she would serve in a variety of roles involving technology partnerships, business development, and product management.  Fast-forward a few years, and we find Stanford Law graduate Burman serving as general counsel first to Mindjet and then to crowdsourcing innovation upstart Spigit. “I would say that working from those perspectives—although it is a bit of a roundabout way to become a CFO—has really led me to a place where I can be a CFO with a business-minded, strategic approach,” says Burman, who points out that along the way, she was given the opportunity to closely observe the board room decision-making behind certain acquisitions designed to drive growth. “The breadth of experiences that I have taken with me are not necessarily specific to my core finance role, but speak to my ability to understand cross-functionally what’s important to my peers,” Burman observes, while underscoring the growing cross-functional role that finance plays in business today. For just as Burman’s resume has evolved, so too has the role of CFO. – Jack Sweeney Do you want to learn more about the experiences that shaped today’s finance leaders? Happy Independence Day to our American listeners! Mark Mandel is back today as he and Gabi Ferrara interview Bill Creekbaum of Informatica to learn how they work with Google Cloud for a better big data user experience. Mark Mirchandani is hanging around the studio as well, bringing some cool things of the week and helping with the question of the week! Informatica provides data managing products that offer complete solutions focusing on metadata management, integration, governance, security, data quality, and discoverability. Bill’s job at Informatica is to ensure these products really take advantage of the strengths of Google Cloud Platform. One such example is a product that allows customers to design in Informatica and push their projects to Cloud Dataproc. Informatica also offers similar capabilities in BigQuery. When moving data from on-prem to the cloud, customers can use Informatica and Google Cloud together for a seamless transition, cost savings, and easier data control. Together, Informatica and Google Cloud can also facilitate the acquisition of high quality data. To have better, more trustworthy output, data inputed needs to be safe to access, have few or no duplicates and null values, and be complete. To achieve this, developers usually use a combination of the Informatica tools Intelligent Cloud Services, Enterprise Data Catalog, and Big Data Management, and the Google tools BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Analytics, Dataproc, and Pub/Sub. Bill’s closing advice for companies comes in three parts: take stock of the data you’ve got, set goals, and develop a well-rounded team. Bill Creekbaum Bill Creekbaum is Sr. Director of Product Management for Cloud, Big Data, and Analytic Ecosystems at Informatica. He is focused on delivering market leading unified data management platforms and services that help customers take advantage of their greatest assets, data. Bill has been in product management and product marketing for more than 20 years and for the past 10 has been focused on successfully delivering SaaS and Cloud Applications to the market. Prior to joining Informatica, Bill has worked at SnapLogic, GoodData, Oracle, Microsoft, Mindjet, and more. See more of Bill’s experience on LinkedIn. This week on “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Jascha Kaykas-Wolff, chief marketing officer at Mozilla. Previously, Kaykas-Wolff served as CMO at BitTorrent and Mindjet, and he is the co-host of his own podcast, “This is Your Life in Silicon Valley.” In his conversation with Alan, Kaykas-Wolff touches on, among other things, trust, data and lean data practices, and what it means for a company to stand for something. Kaykas-Wolff points out that, in this age of data breaches and companies unwittingly sharing consumer information, lack of trust is at a crisis level. “In the U.S., trust is not just declining — it’s crashing,” says Kaykas-Wolff. “In the last year, we’ve had almost a 20 percent decrease in trust, in the popularly informed public, in the U.S. alone. This is a crisis of confidence that the general population has in businesses.” Kaykas-Wolff went on to add, “We’re not taking good care of our customers’ data, and that impacts the trust that they have in us.”   Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include:  Mozilla is more than just Firefox. It’s an organization “fiercely focused” on maintaining an open and accessible internet. (1:52) Mozilla’s products provide a unique way for them to go to market and allows them to develop a sophisticated brand strategy. (5:09) “Magic Growth Equations Don’t Exist.” (7:07) A wake-up call for marketers: Kaykas-Wolff talks about “Conscience Choosers,” and the economic impact they have. (13:45) Kaykas-Wolff on how trust drives business results. (18:22) Mozilla’s “privacy by design” encompasses four lean-data practices. (22:42) Marketing practices and media mix fuel Mozilla’s nimble performance. (35:50) Kaykas-Wolff wants the people around him to be happy and successful.
