The Importance of Tactical Empathy: Voss emphasizes understanding the emotions and mindset of the opposite party. Tactical empathy involves listening closely, understanding their feelings, and responding appropriately to influence the situation positively.2. Mirroring: This is a technique where the negotiator repeats the last three words (or the critical one to three words) of what someone has just said. It's a simple yet effective way to encourage the other person to elaborate and divulge more information.3. Labeling: This involves acknowledging the other person's emotions and giving them a name. Questions like "How am I supposed to do that?" make the other party solve your problems and think about your limits.6. The Power of No: Voss argues that allowing the counterpart to say 'no' gives them the safety and the feeling of control; it opens up the conversation for further discussions rather than shutting it down.7. Creating the Illusion of Control: The book discusses strategies for the negotiator to make the counterpart feel in control while the negotiator is actually directing the conversation. Strategic use of questions and pauses changes the dynamic in favor of the negotiator.8. The Rule of Three: Getting the counterpart to agree to the same thing three times in a conversation confirms consistency and commitment, reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings or the agreement falling apart later.9. Bending Reality: Voss discusses negotiation techniques involving anchoring their emotions and letting the other party see the deal in a way that highlights your side as winning. This can involve non-monetary terms that make the offer more appealing without changing its intrinsic value.10. “That's Right”: The goal is to get the counterpart to say “that's right” in response to a summary of their perspective or feelings. This indicates a sub-conscious buy-in and affinity which often signifies a breakthrough in negotiations.11. Effective Pauses: Silence can be a powerful tool in negotiations. Tactical pauses after making a point or asking a question give the counterpart time to think and enhance the weight of your words.Each of these techniques draws on human psychology and demonstrates how negotiation isn't just an exchange of demands or a dialogue, but rather a deeply psychological engagement that requires empathy, strategic thinking, and the right communication skills. Isabelle and David explore more strengths of neurodivergence, such as adaptability and responding in crisis/pressure situations (like a Ferrari on a racetrack, versus the parking lot of practice), and explore the question: why do we use so many qualifiers? Saying things like “I know I'm talking too fast,” to “nerd alert!” to “I know you hate me and want to kill me, but…” thinking about how we try to make ourselves appear aware, or harmless, or signal our vulnerability or fear of being put into a box, and how curiosity can work in our favor to make this a conscious choice rather than an automatic habit. ——David shares the stat that is most closely tied to income (not your test scores or math scores or writing ability)…but your vocabulary, the words you understand. It's connected to travel, how well you can shift between different environments and understand things. We're so used to thinking about things in different ways we may not even realize how adept we are at traveling between worlds. Isabelle recognizes how the oral tradition, storytelling, there's some things she doesn't take away from the written word that she takes away from hearing about it. How wonderful is it that she found her way into a profession where her role is a listener. She may not regurgitate all the info or nail that standardized test but If you look at her facility to adapt to novel or unusual or crisis circumstances, she wouldn't trade all her masking for that ability, because she can chameleon her way through a lot of situations. She was recently on a panel and hadn't been in front of so many humans in a long time. And she noticed that she doesn't necessarily have the same stress response others have. When they were practicing for the panel, she didn't do as well and the other amazing panelists seemed at home. When it came time to do it, she got in the zone, and their nerves were visible and it changed their performance. They went from being so organized and put together and getting nervous, whereas she noticed she was more at home and at ease under pressure. All these intangible but real things that we don't give ourselves credit for. David names that her brain has always been a Ferrari, and when they're doing the pre-planning, that's like driving around a parking lot. It would be clunky. The panel itself was the racetrack and she could let herself go. This brings David to something he noticed lately when talking with his lovely colleague; he said “I know you're going to kill me and hate me, but…I like football.” And his colleague pointed out that he says that sometimes. And his brain opened up the neurodivergent qualifier canyon—“but, I dunno, is it? I do” All the “am I taking up too much space? Talking too fast? Moving too much?” It's something David has worked on so much. When we're qualifying, we're taking ammo out of someone else's arsenal. We say the thing we're scared someone is going to say to us, then when someone says something terrible to us, we're not upset. David notices he does this with things he really, really likes but that he has a conflict around.  He's owning that he's a really, really big football fan. And he's the only football fan in his family, this wasn't handed down, this was something he stumbled on that he loves. He's also spent the last 30 years studying brains, trauma, and behavior, so it's complicated, but he still loves football. He says “don't kill me, I love football” as a way of saying “don't worry, I know football is bad, it's a guilty pleasure.” But in all moments when qualifiers come out, we disrupt other people's agency. The questions need to be okay. The conflicts need to be okay. We're allowed to be guarded, we're allowed to be vulnerable, but it's not always easy liking little shiny things, because you might like a shiny thing that someone else doesn't like. The qualifiers are the ways we use language to soften blows for ourselves, to stop our rocket from fully going wild across the field, they're like really sophisticated bumper guards. It's a part of having self esteem hits from ADHD, but it's not all bad. This makes Isabelle think of how many qualifiers she uses in a moment let alone a day. It also makes her think of how she first came across qualifiers in a book on negotiation that calls them accusational audits, where you disarm someone's argument by naming the thing you think they'll use against you (e.g. ‘I know I'm young and experienced, but…”) She also thinks she uses phrases like “nerd alert” and “get ready, I'm about to geek out on you…” because there's a lot about herself she was the last to find out about. She feels like she's the last to know and she misses a lot. That's also a strength/vulnerability of neurodivergence, the sense of our own self-appraisal being off, and/or really knowing our own limits. It's like a way to broadcast to the world, “hey, don't worry, I may be ten steps behind, but there's a thin line of awareness here, there is a fin on this rocket, it's way back here, but don't worry!” Like a little person holding a kite string to the rocket. David is also joining this, qualifiers aren't good or bad, “how come I didn't know that?” But noticing where it shows up in safe and secure relationships. Qualifiers around “did that make sense?” And “I'm going to sum it up here” all make sense as cues to the listener, but where are we most vulnerable and what things make us create qualifiers. It's interesting to David that it comes up at work, where he doesn't feel very guarded—it doesn't strike him as a choice, it's part of the ADHD repetoire. If he thinks about it as a symptom, it feels gross. If he thinks about it as a behavior, he feels better.  A behavior is just a thing, it's neutral on it's own: this is my dunking the basketball behavior, this is my crying the corner behavior, it's just a thing. So, to make sure she understands, Isabelle checks that qualifiers are indeed the judgments you say about the thing that you fear someone will say about the thing that you put out there ahead of time. Maybe another way of saying “vulnerability alert, vulnerability alert” or “no harm meant!” Showing your soft underbelly. But yet, we're often saying qualifiers about the behaviors we're doing that are automatic (like talking quickly, changing topics, going on tangents, talking a lot, etc.) and also the qualifying itself is a behavior that is connected to ADHD. David explains that you know it's automatic when you don't choose to do it (or not do it). The first thing we do to change a behavior is to observe it, just observing it changes it. He doesn't need people to hold him accountable or say it to him while he's talking, but he wants to notice it so he can choose where it happens so that the qualifiers don't get in the way of building intimacy. It's like the idea of toastmasters, if you're trying to practice doing something like speaking, you gotta take away the qualifiers. It makes Isabelle think of pickle ball and how she was clunky and loving it but found herself qualifying and apologizing a lot, and her friend/coach told her “when you do that a lot, you take the fun out of it.” It sets you up to accept yourself differently, she just accepted she's a poor pickle ball player and it was more fun. And it also means you get to play more because you need safety and trust to start to play. It's so hard to play when you're busy going “don't hurt me, don't kill me.” It's like farting in the waiting room. No one wants that. It's like two dogs doing cute little play bow, and one dog starts going “i'm sorry, I'm sorry,” the other dog stops going play. It's not unlike saying sorry to objects when you bump into them. “Why am I apologizing for existing in space?” So many habits served you at some point, it was so your friend, have you outgrown it? How hard it was to stop doing something, how easy it was to do something instead, to replace it. What's something else she could do when she wants to take up less space: curiosity. Get curious about what's going to happen. If I'm throwing out the qualifier, I'm certain someone is going to say something. I need to be curious and uncertain, see what happens next, trust I can handle it. There are places in his life that it gets in the way of his ability to play and fantasize. People getting smaller when they apologize; it's interesting what we do to try to take up less space or not be put into boxes we don't belong in. Qualifiers help us be put into different boxes. It's not dissimilar to the opposite of fear is curiosity, and the opposite of depression and survival is play. Curiosity will invite a big gap into fear. So how does vocabulary link to income outcomes? All of these actions require communication between people. How do you achieve the desired outcome in a negotiation and convince the other party? In this book, Chris Voss outlines nine negotiation tips that you can apply to every situation in your life, and which will benefit you forever. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It. This book will teach you how to take control in essential conversations in your daily life. Chris Voss is a former FBI negotiator, who often negotiated with kidnappers to free hostages. Once, kidnappers asked the family of a hostage to pay a ransom of $150,000. The family told Voss that they could pay between $50,000 to $85,000. However, Voss successfully managed to lower the price to $4,751, and the hostage was rescued safely. This is only one of the many successful mediations he took part in, over his twenty years of experience, on the basis of which he created a solid theory which can be applied not only to international crises but also to situations that concern our families, careers, intimate relationships, and even parenting. Voss is also the founder of the Black Swan Group, a Fortune 500 company, and has taught and given lectures at Harvard and MIT. The co-author of this book, Tahl Raz, is also the co-author of the New York Times' best-selling column, Never Eat Alone, and a content editorial consultant at a number of companies. If you are a regular user of our platform, you may know that we have unlocked a lot of books on negotiation methods. One of them, Getting To Yes, regarded as having “an unrivaled place in the literature of dispute resolution” introduces the Principled Negotiation, a method researched by the Harvard Negotiation Project. So, is there a difference between Voss' theory of negotiation and the one introduced in Getting To Yes? There is. The book states that the negotiating parties are “rational actors”, while Voss's theoretical approach assumes that they are irrational instead. The theory comes from the work of Daniel Kahneman, an American psychologist, who believes that humans have two thought systems: a System 1, which consists of our innate skills that we share with other animals, fast, intuitive and emotional; and a System 2, which is slower, strenuous and rational. Kahneman's theories have already been covered in our bookey about his work Thinking, Fast and Slow. When putting Kahneman's theory and negotiations together, the first step is observe and analyze one's System 1, their emotions, reactions, and feelings. Then, questions can be asked in order to influence their System 1 and receive the desired reaction, granting the initiative to control the other party. In general, this is a kind of negotiation based on emotional control. We will look at the specific negotiation methods in three parts: Part One: How to quickly establish a harmonious relationship with the other party at the beginning of the negotiation; Part Two: How to persuade others to get the results wanted in a negotiation; Part Three: How to find out unknown information and ensure implementation after negotiation.

“We're going to have a number of paradigm shifts in the next five years, so it should be a fun time,” says Michael Shuffett, co-founder and CEO of Compose.ai. “There's going to be a new way of creating all of that.” This paradigm shift includes a major disruption across all content creation including writing, images, video and audio, and Compose.ai is poised to be a big part of that in the timesaving space with things like autocompletion, rephrasing writing, and generating full content. Basically, Michael asks you to imagine having a full time assistant who knows you inside and out at your disposal.   Unlike other AI companies who take a more vertical approach, Compose.ai has a broader mission to aid humanity by making AI an extension of the human. It hopes to achieve this by placing a layer of intelligence in the gap that lies between human and computer.  The conversation also covers the ethics of AI. Today we look at principles from Proverbs as well as Chris Voss' book Never Split the Difference: Communicating Like Your Life Depends on it. I also share some of the most helpful marriage counseling advice I've ever been given.   Key Points:

In This episode, Dr. Gary Sherman welcomes Dr. Anu Lala to our conversation. Dr. Lala's clinical interests encompass all aspects of management of heart failure, including the selection and care of patients with mechanical circulatory support devices and heart transplantation as well as genetic cardiomyopathies -and- perioperative management of high-risk cardiac surgical cases. She believes in a patient-centered approach, where each individual's unique needs and preferences are essential components of developing a personalized treatment plan. Dr. Lala seeks to implement -guideline-directed -medical and device-based therapies while integrating emotional and spiritual aspects of care. (This is right up my alley) In addition to caring for patients, she serves as the Director of Heart Failure Research and as Data Coordinating Center Leader for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. Dr. Lala also leads the fellowship program in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant. She has authored over 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is the principal investigator for a number of clinical trials in heart failure. Dr. Lala serves on local and national committees in the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, Heart Failure Society of America among others, devoted to advanced heart disease. In 2016, Dr Lala was named the American Heart Association Young Professionals Society Honoree for her service and commitment to education - and promoting cardiovascular health awareness. In 2020, she was recognized with the Proctor H. What can terrorists teach you about how to negotiate?'Never Split The Difference' by Chris Voss (with Tahl Raz) is about how to use negotiation skills in real life. The main author is an ex-FBI negotiator who learnt the principles of effective negotiation from real world experience with kidnappers, bank robbers, terrorists, sales people, academics and businessmen. The book is an exposition of his main lessons, told through a mix of history, stories, advice and psychology.I summarised the book as follows. "There are some key pieces of information that can be applied to negotiations in every day life. These range from using techniques (such as mirroring and finalising affirmation), creating empathy and controlling your emotions to simple advice (make sure you are negotiating with the people who actually make the decisions). First thing's first: Grimsmo's back from BLADE SHOW, BABY! To sum up: Awesome team bonding experience. The Grimsmo crew and Brad Southard shared everything (including the booth and the AirBnB) Met SO MANY people during the event, and down in the pit!  “A great way for makers to connect with their customers.” - Grimsmo “Meeting people is what it's all about!” - Saunders The REVEAL of the SAGA! Grimsmo did it! He crunched and turned the pen project into a pen PRODUCT! And, just like Grimsmo, the pen is complicated and unique (especially the mechanism, which could stump an engineer) Keep an eye on the Grimsmo YouTube channel! There's gonna be a few videos on Blade Show coming out soon.  That's a lap! Grimsmo not only decided to get a lapping machine, it was delivered on Wednesday! But it's just a loaner...the new one is bigger, better, and coming in a couple months. The Negotiator Saunders raves about the book he's been reading lately called Never Split the Difference by Christopher Voss and Tahl Raz, which is all about the art of negotiation. It's an art form, and the masters of it find win-win solutions.  Sometimes it's okay to be blown away by the traction this podcast has, and Saunders takes a quick tangent to thank all our great listeners!
