In this fast-paced book, Rebecca Makkai takes on the #MeToo movement, misogyny in high school, true crime podcasts, and hidden abuse. "We all have our identity journeys.” - Princess Sarah Culberson During her teenage years, Princess Sarah Culberson began to get curious about her identity, biological history, and even who she looked like. Once embarking on her journey, she learned that her biological mother died when she was 11, and her father lived in a village in Sierra Leone, West Africa. From him, she learned about her royal family, and that she is a Mahaloi, the granddaughter of a Paramount Chief, which meant Sarah is a princess. During today's show, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Princess Sarah to share more of her story and the search for her family – and the extraordinary things that began to happen when her two worlds came together into one story. She also shares how her adoptive parents played a vital and positive role in learning more about her roots – plus, how their response and engagement in their community taught her about confidence. To end the show, she will also provide her best guidance to listeners around building confidence and identity, adding that if we don't take care of ourselves, it can be very difficult to operate in the world. About Today's Guest: Princess Sarah was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, to an African father and white mother. As an infant, she was put into foster care, then adopted by a loving white West Virginia family. She grew up contemplating and dealing with questions about her identity and her biracial roots. She fell in love with theatre in early childhood and won an undergrad acting scholarship to West Virginia University. She earned her MFA at The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and joined the Los Angeles acting community. Princess Sarah has danced and acted on stage as well as in films and television. She has been a guest performer with the Urban Latin Dance Theater Company CONTRA-TIEMPO. However, her biggest role so far came when she decided to locate her biological parents. In today's episode, we take a closer look at how climate change affected early modern England--especially during the Little Ice Age, a period of global cooling that occurred from the 16th to the 19th century. We explore how this environmental phenomenon influenced the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and what it can teach us about our current global climate crisis. To help us gain a deeper understanding of the issue, we are joined by Sydney Schwindt. Sydney Schwindt wears many hats in the theatre world; she is an actor, director, fight director, and educator. She is a resident artist and climate justice advocate on the engagement team with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. She is the program developer with the Society of American Fight Directors and is on the advisory board for the Same Boat Theatre Collective. She has taught movement and stage combat at the American Conservatory Theatre's Graduate program and Indiana University. Sydney shares her expertise on the intersection of climate change and the arts, and how theatre can be used as a tool to raise awareness and promote action on climate issues. We discuss the role that theatre can play in shaping our attitudes towards the environment and how they can inspire us to take action. Finally, we provide listeners with resources to get involved in the fight against climate change, from simple actions that can be taken in our daily lives to organizations that are making a difference. On this episode Ruibo opens up about moving from Shanghai to the US at a young age and subsequently experiencing the first of what would become regular and powerful metaphysical and out-of-body experiences. She explains how a painful shyness led her to acting as a vehicle for making sense of her interior life, and how that need has shifted as the tools and modalities of her spiritual practice have grown. It's a fascinating and very intimate discussion. Ruibo Qian is an actor, writer, tarot reader, and interdisciplinary artist. Her lifelong passion for spiritual evolution and discovery has led her down varied paths and modalities which she incorporates into her tarot and intuitive practice, marrying philosophies from varied schools of metaphysical thought with intuitive knowledge, energy work, astrological influences, and channeled messages. As an actor, Ruibo has performed in venues across the country including LCT3, the Signature Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the Huntington Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, and more. On screen she has been featured in Black Mirror, Manchester by the Sea, Mozart in The Jungle, Broad City, and others. www.thekingprincess.com Follow her! Andrew also lends his vast cannabis business and political expertise as a consultant for hire to the global community at large, including several strategic partnerships with the world's leading cannabis-centric service firms. Andrew led the design and development of gold-standard cannabis retail by innovating many “firsts” for the industry. These include: introducing CBD medicines to heal severely epileptic children as documented in Discovery Channel's Weed Wars, implementing the first lab-testing program in the history of cannabis dispensing, creating child-resistant packaging for edibles, standardizing inventory tracking, initiating senior outreach, and successfully preventing the federal government from seizing Harborside in forfeiture actions against the company in 2012. Andrew is co-founder and Chairperson of the Board for the non-profit Last Prisoner Project (LPP). LPP's mission is to free and re-integrate all cannabis prisoners on earth into mainstream society. Since its inception in 2019, LPP has successfully re-integrated the formerly incarcerated and 2020 will be the year LPP frees its first constituent. Andrew is also a founding Board of Directors member of the California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA), the premier cannabis industry trade association in California, where he served from 2013 to 2020 building the organization from zero to 500 member companies. Graduating with honors from Chapman University with a BFA degree in Communications & Theatre, Andrew began his political career as an activist while studying for his MFA in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. Over two decades as an activist, Andrew worked on a variety of voter initiatives which legalized medical and adult-use cannabis in San Francisco, Washington D.C, and the State of California. As an actor, Andrew starred in the feature film Mary Jane's Not A Virgin Anymore which premiered at Sundance in 1997, and on national television shows like Superior Court (1987); Homicide: Life on the Street (1998); as well as dozens of plays across the United States. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Emmy Winning Actress, Author and Animal Advocate, Carolyn HennesyAbout Harvey's guestA Los Angeles native and self proclaimed studio-brat, Carolyn has been in over 100 theatrical productions spanning the LA, regional and international theatre scenes. If you ask her nicely she'll recite the list of her plays for you and then she'll recite it again…backwards. Having trained at American Conservatory Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London as well as earning a dramatic scholarship to the California State University at Northridge, she has played such distinguished houses as the Mark Taper Forum, Arizona Theatre Company and the Geary Stage. She also studied with the Groundlings in the early ‘90s and became a member of the Sunday Company. From there she moved to the main company at the ACME Comedy Theatre and was a founding member of the all-female improv troupe, “Ovaryaction”. She is the 2001 recipient of the prestigious Natalie Schafer Award for Outstanding Comedic Actress given by the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and has been featured as an “Actor's Actor” in the industry publication Backstage-West. Among other accolades, the LA Stage Alliance has honored her with an Ovation Award, which she hosted in 2011, and in 2010 she added the words “Emmy nominated” (General Hospital) to her list of achievements. Most recently, Carolyn dazzled as the deliciously vicious “Rosalyn Harris” on Alan Ball's critically acclaimed HBO series TRUE BLOOD. Hennesy joined the cast for the fifth season of the sleek vampires-meet-world saga and fast became a fan favorite. As Rosalyn, the ageless vamp with a Texas twang, Hennesy was at the top of her game, tossing one-liners like firecrackers, occasionally enjoying a juicy stake, and gleefully partaking in old-timey interrogation.Prior to TRUE BLOOD, Hennesy is best known for her memorable work as “Barb Coman” on ABC's COUGAR TOWN and for an Emmy nominated run as “Diane Miller” on ABC's GENERAL HOSPITAL. Kids across America also know her as the hilariously haughty Mrs. Chesterfield on Disney Channel's JESSIE. On the big screen, Hennesy's credits include CLICK starring Adam Sandler, LEGALLY BLONDE 2 with Reese Witherspoon, and TERMINATOR 3 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.Hennesy's creative endeavors also include a successful career as a writer. She created the wildly popular “Pandora” (Bloomsbury USA) children's book series as well as penned the New York Times Bestseller “The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli” (Hyperion). To see more, click on “Books.”When not on set, Hennesy is privileged to lend her time and talent to a number of causes including caring for our wounded warriors and helping those with debilitating physical issues regain their self-esteem, but chief among all causes is the issue of animal rescue. Now, all of that is well and good, but the big news is that Carolyn has become a flying trapeze artist. No lie. Just look at her hands. If you really want to get her talking, just ask her, “Hey Carolyn, how's that layout coming along?!”For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com https://carolynhennesy.com/https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carolyn-Hennesy-Fan-Page/219399211420702https://twitter.com/carolynhennesy#carolynhennesy #harveybrownstoneinterviews
This episode of Crossroads Cafe features Heather Christian, the exceptionally talented creator, writer, and star of "Animal Wisdom," a musical that involves summoning quite a few ghosts. Christian, a medium and a musician adept at transversing the boundaries between art forms, dimensions, and human minds, talks the art of crafting a show that the New York Times called "part exorcism, part dialogue with her dearly departed; part slide show and part ontological theorizing." "Animal Wisdom" is available to stream live, courtesy of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and American Conservatory Theatre, at act-sf.org through June 27, 2021.

Teaching isn’t all about knowledge, its also about form Why is curiosity important to an actor? “Its a curiosity about people and why people are the way they are” “How did they get there?” “Having an insatiable curiosity is paramount to being an actor.” Tips about Acting Class: Carve your own path and say what you need Make your ears grow bigger Make it about your technique Resist the urge to make it about your career Craft in the Class, The Business outside Do you have ownership of your craft or are you just waiting for someone else to tell you what to do? Reliability and Longevity If you have questions, make them about craft! Start to figure out why you want to do this and what you want to do When you know what it is, just keep imagining how good it’s gonna feel when you achieve it! Advanced/ Intermediate Actor: They know where to go How to build this character Determine what they’re going through And the ability to go there Advanced actors can do this more reliably. You can work on pure craft and the career “I’m trying to get you to work fast and slow at the same time.” You have to get to product while having the integrity of process. Tap into the jugular vein. “It’s not about showing I know what I am doing, it's about me knowing what I am doing.”

Over two decades as an activist, Andrew DeAngelo worked on a variety of voter initiatives that legalized medical and adult-use cannabis in San Francisco, Washington D.C, and the State of California. As a co-founder and advisor to one of the oldest and largest cannabis retailers in the world, Harborside, Andrew has pioneered legal cannabis business processes and provided groundbreaking political engagement and thought leadership to the cannabis community — leading the design and development of gold-standard cannabis retail by innovating many “firsts” for the industry. This includes: introducing CBD medicines to heal severely epileptic children, implementing the first lab-testing program in the history of cannabis dispensing, creating child-resistant packaging for edibles, standardizing inventory tracking, initiating senior outreach, and successfully preventing the federal government from seizing Harborside in forfeiture actions against the company in 2012. Andrew began his political career as an activist while studying for his MFA in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. This is IMPACT. A daily look at how we are coping with the coronavirus in Nevada. I'm Carrie Kaufman.I spent the first half of my adult life doing, watching and writing about theatre. But I really spent those decades of the 90's and aughts writing about life.PerformInk, which was the newspaper I started back when the first Bush was ending his presidency, covered politics, race, sexual and workplace harassment. We wrote about economic development. And leadership. And being a working parent. And global policies and issues.Because arts is a lens that refracts and makes sense of the entire world. It is our common language. It is our shared experience. These are the things I've learned from theatre:To be in the moment. To always be authentic and present. To be emotionally available. If you bottle yourself up and follow outside rules, rather than inside intuition, you will not be a good leader. You simply won't see the people you're trying to lead. You may not even see yourself. To listen. Truly listen. Not just with your ears, but with your whole being. To take risks. I just started a radio show on two days notice. I am a gay, single mother who reoriented her career halfway through her life.To say Yes… AND. That's one of the main tenets of improv. You come into a given situation, you find agreement, then you add something to help it move forward.Theatre has taught me how to live. It's made me a good journalist and interviewer and manager. It's made me a halfway decent teacher. It's made me a damn good mother. We're going to talk today about how arts are influencing us in this time of lockdown and fear. And how we can take the lessons that arts have to teach us to see our way through to more meaningful experiences on the other side.I'm joined today, as I am going to be every Friday, by Sarah O'Connell. Sarah is the artistic director of Asylum Theatre, and former associate director at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. She is also a fierce arts advocate and leader, and has stepped up to bring the performance community in Las Vegas together, most notably through her website, Eat More Art Vegas, and her monthly Arts Table gatherings.Matt Elwell is an old friend from my Chicago Theatre days. He's Executive Director of CSz Worldwide and a speaker and consultant in Applied Improvisation. CSz Worldwide produces ComedySportz. In addition to his exec duties, Matt has been a performer in ComedySportz for 20 years.I met both of these people because I interviewed them. And I was like, “Yeah, I have to keep these people.”

In 2014, she landed a supporting role in TV movie "Exposed" directed by Patty Jenkins and has since worked on various film and TV projects, including HBO's hit show "Silicon Valley". Carolyn McCormick was born in Midland, Texas and grew up in Houston where she went to The Kinkaid School. Upon graduating she went to Williams College where she majored in theatre and graduated with honors after directing and translating Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit for her senior thesis. For the next four years she lived in San Francisco getting her masters degree in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre. After two years as a student she joined the main stage acting company. Her first break in film was playing Jimmy Stewart’s daughter in The Late Christoper Beane but sadly the film was shelved after Carol Burnett backed out of the film for medical reasons. Her next break was a film in Germany with Dennis Quaid and Lou Gosset JR. directed by Wolfgang Peterson, Enemy Mine. After that she joined the cast of Spenser for Hire in Boston with Robert Urich. When that show ended she hit the road with her soon to be husband Byron Jennings working all over the country doing plays across the country from the Denver Center to Baltimore’s Center Stage, Seattle Rep, The Old Globe in San Diego and Yale in New Haven, before settling down in New York city to start her family. In the early 90’s she began working on Law and Order as the shrink Dr. Olivet and has played that role in every spinoff of that show over the past few decades. During that period she has relocated to LA a few times for various projects including the TV series Cracker and a TNT original film called You Know My Name with Sam Elliot, as well as Minuet Riker on Star Trek the Next Generation. Most of her time is spent in New York City and when she is not working in film and television she is performing in theatre on and off broadway and has an active voice over career doing myriad political spots, Ken Burns documentaries and audio books, including the Hunger Games series.
