In the latest episode of the State of the Arts Podcast, host filmmaker and writer Des Doyle chats with Steven S. DeKnight, acclaimed screenwriter, director, producer, and creator/showrunner behind some of the most influential genre series of the past two decades. Produced in partnership with Film Ireland and supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland through the Screen Stakeholders Funding Scheme, the State of the Arts series explores the creative processes, industry challenges, and new opportunities that both Irish and international creatives face in today's ever-evolving artistic landscapes. In this conversation, DeKnight reflects on his journey breaking into the entertainment industry as a writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He discusses his work writing, directing, and producing on iconic series such as Angel, Smallville, and Dollhouse, before creating the hit show Spartacus for Starz and showrunning season one of Marvel's Daredevil. Jace chats with writer/producer/director Steven S. DeKnight about his Comixology Original Graphic Novel, Beneath. Steven is a very talented story teller who has worked on genre defining shows such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Smallville. He is the creator of the Starz show Spartacus, where he also served as showrunner. His experience working with superheroes also extends to serving as showrunner for Daredevil. He has written several comics before such as Buffy and Conan as well as Wolverine, but this is the first time he is venturing into an original story. The result, with incredible art from Michael Gaydos, is a compelling page turner that has multiple layers of action and character. It gets our highest recommendation. So join us to hear about how the project came to life for Steven over a number of years and what he loves about the freedom of storytelling in comics.

What's interesting about this is that Peyton Reed is actually a fan of Murray's based on this tweet from earlier in the year. Disney+ [10:57] Armor Wars Will Explore War Machine's Past and Future https://www.cbr.com/armor-wars-explore-war-machine-past-and-future/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs4Q6XLPrzA Don Cheadle discussed his upcoming solo Disney+ series, Armor Wars, and how it will flesh out Rhodey beyond his connection to Tony Stark. The actor spoke to ACE Universe about the show, which has yet to land a release date on the streaming service. Announced back in December, Armor Wars will adapt the popular Marvel Comics story with a twist: Iron Man won't be part of it. Instead, the series will explore the Armored Avenger's best friend and sidekick. "Well, I think that the most exciting part is yet to come," Cheadle said. "I think we don't really have a super-strong idea of who he is really outside of that, sort of, bubble of the Avengers. Out of necessarily his friendship with Tony. And now he's going to kind of be untethered from all of that. So it's an opportunity to really discover who he is in a way that we have not had before; with concentrated time and focus on Rhodey and Rhodey's journey, and with, hopefully, some stuff about his past. And teeing up some things about his potential future. Who knows how long this Marvel thing goes. It seems kinda unending. We might all die on set one day." "What's most exciting is yet to come, and I think those kinds of things were hinted at in Endgame, you know, where this character might go, and things that may be in the offing for him," Cheadle continued. "It's very early in the process of Armor Wars. We just hired my boy Yassir [Lester], which I'm very excited about, [he] wrote on Black Monday. [I've] become really good friends with him and close with him. Great guy. A lot of great ideas. But honestly, we're just really trying to crack the spine of what it's going to be and chop it up. I couldn't really give you the answers if you asked them because we're super in the clay mode right now." [19:17] Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/disney-channel-moon-girl-devil-dinosaur-cast https://twitter.com/DisneyTVANews/status/1447981238577422345 We previously revealed that the Disney Channel announced Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated series at D23 2019. We're now excited to share that they've found their cast! Actress and singer Diamond White will star as Lunella Lafayette (aka Moon Girl) in the channel's highly anticipated animated series, slated to premiere in 2022. But that's not all; also joining the lead cast are: Alfre Woodard (Marvel's Luke Cage) as Lunella's grandmother, Mimi Libe Barer as Lunella's best friend and manager, Casey Sasheer Zamata as Lunella's mom, Adria Jermaine Fowler as Lunella's dad, James Jr. Fred Tatasciore (Marvel's Avengers Assemble) as the one-and-only Devil Dinosaur Gary Anthony Williams as Lunella's grandfather, Pops. Series executive producer Laurence Fishburne (Ant-Man and The Wasp) will voice the recurring role of The Beyonder, a curious and mischievous trickster. Source 2: Daniel Richtman , a reliable scooper, shared on his Patreon that a spinoff featuring the Ten Rings organization from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in development over at Marvel Studios. [31:02] RUMOR: Howard the Duck Animated Series In the Works https://www.cbr.com/howard-the-duck-animated-series-rumor/ According to an anonymous 4Chan user, Disney is in the early stages of development on a cartoon show starring Howard. It will be one of the first projects by the recently launched Marvel Studios Animation and will star see Seth Green reprise his role as the title character. Additionally, Disney is set to officially reveal the show at their Disney+ Day event on Nov. 12 and it is due to release in 2024. This should all be taken with a grain of salt, since the source makes the validity of the claim questionable. NETFLIX DEFENDERS [34:40] Steven S. DeKnight Exits Marvel Citing C.B. Cebulski's "Akira Yoshida" controversy. While this news made headlines in 2017, DeKnight -- who's largely preoccupied with his film and television work -- only recently learned about it when it began making the rounds again on Twitter. "How does this man still have a job? Completely unacceptable," DeKnight tweeted. "I had no idea. I love writing for Marvel comics, but this changes the equation. Drastically. There are so many great editors there. To allow a man who climbed to the top through cultural identity theft to remain in that position is unconscionable." Wes is back with another episode of the The Comic Wrap. Wes runs down the biggest comic book and pop culture news and best conversations of the week. Rumors swirled for weeks that DC Comics writer Tom Taylor was turning new Superman Jon Kent gay. DC confirmed this week Superman will officially come out as bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal El #5. (00:00:00) Some suggest this is a natural progression for the character. But looking at writer Tom Taylor's words and recent actions by DC Comics, it's clear they're pushing a progressive agenda. (00:16:21) Just when fans thought it can't get worse, DC Comics continue their downward trajectory. Announcing new comics from Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Waid and Tini Howard in 2022. (00:37:50) Oliver Willis suggests that Superman Clark Kent has been a woke character since the 1940's. (00:59:29) Netflix Daredevil show-runner Steven S. DeKnight learned Marvel Comics EIC C.B. Cebulski used to write under an Asian pseudonym while writing Marvel Manga 20 years. DeKnight called for Cebulski's firing. We talk to producer and screenwriter Steven S. DeKnight. He talks about his career highlight working on Spartacus, the opportunities he missed that led to him taking that meeting and the challenges (and excitement) working on Marvel's Daredevil. He talks honestly about when to push back on execs, how to compromise and when to admit you have it wrong.Steven talks about directing, what he got right, what he got horribly wrong and being shouted at by a line producer. And gives great advice about writing not what you know, but what you are passionate about.A masterclass from an industry giant.
In a time where we are inundated with superhero shows that dare to be different, here's another one. Developed for Netflix by Steven S. DeKnight, Jupiter's Legacy is the superhero drama series based of the Image comic book series by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. Sang Kyu Kim served as showrunner. Luke and Jae check out this new series, which stars Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, and Matt Lanter. Shortly after his father's suicide in 1929, former businessman Sheldon Sampson creates a superhero team called the Union of Justice, and his guiding ideals – never kill anyone, never interfere in political matters – remain unchanged over the near-century of his adventures as The Utopian. However, the next generation of superheroes, including his children, struggles to live up to his rigid ideals and high expectations. When Sheldon's son, Brandon, seemingly kills one of their greatest foes, it ignites a public debate over whether those ideals are still relevant.

Jupiter's Legacy is an American superhero streaming television series developed by Steven S. DeKnight, based on the Image comic book series by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, that premiered on Netflix on May 7, 2021. The series stars Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, and Matt Lanter. The central figure is the Utopian, but to his family, he is merely Sheldon Sampson (Duhamel), a man struggling between being the family patriarch who’s attempting to instill some morals in his now-grown children, and being the flawless, visionary superhero the world needs. Filling out the gaps of the immediate family are his wife Grace (Leslie Bibb in a fitting come full circle moment since the first Iron Man) aka Lady Liberty; his brother Walter (Ben Daniels) aka Brainwave; his son, Brandon (Andrew Horton) aka The Paragon, who is trying desperately to live up to his father’s image; and estranged daughter Chloe (Elena Kampouris) who has left the superhero life behind to pursue the celebrity route.
