The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Chuck's chat with French horn player Alan Robinson, the man whose extraordinary playing graces “God Only Knows.” It's absolutely incredible what a photographic memory Alan possesses—listening to him speak, it's as if you're sitting there right beside him, watching Brian Wilson through the control room glass. This interview is an absolute must-hear for Pet Sounds fans.At 21, Alan became the youngest contract member of the 20th Century Fox orchestra, where he played on films like The King & I, Carousel and The Sound Of Music. In the mid-1960s, he discovered that "being a busy session player was more lucrative than symphonic work,” which is how he came to be on Pet Sounds. Among his other pop credits are sessions and/or live shows with Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Neil Diamond, Earth, Wind, & Fire, The 5th Dimension, Johnny Mathis, Elton John, and Paul McCartney & Wings. Illinois, Michigan, and recently Minnesota have all legalized recreational cannabis. Efforts to do so in Wisconsin have gone nowhere in the state Legislature. Even so, Madison is seeing an increasing number of stores selling CBD, Delta-8 THC, and other legal cannabinoids — some of which produce the same euphoric high as the recreational weed that's illegal in our state. We spoke with Alan Robinson, cannabis activist and co-founder of Herbal Aspects, to help us understand this confusing state of affairs. Wanna talk to us about an episode? It's not hard to find a store selling Delta-8 products in Madison. We recently spoke to Alan Robinson of Herbal Aspect, who argues that this cannabis product is safe and legal. But Dr. Ana Pearson says there's reason for caution. She says that the lack of regulation means it's buyer beware. Production processes can be uneven, so dosing information can be unreliable. There's the possibility of ingesting heavy metals as a byproduct of the manufacturing process. She also stresses moderation is key. Start with low doses and avoid using every single day. Don't use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding and keep your edibles and vapes out of kids' reach. She spoke to producer Molly Stentz about things you should know about Delta-8. Dr. Pearson spoke with us on her own behalf, and not officially on behalf of UW-Madison. With a growing number of practices being acquired by corporate groups, the age-old tradition of buying into an independent practice is slowly becoming a thing of the past, leaving many ambitious young vets with little option but to start from scratch. In this VBJ First Opinions Podcast, editor James Westgate talks to a young couple who did just that – building their “dream practice” from the ground up, with a little help from VetDynamics along the way. Claire Smith and Josh Willmot from Beacon View Veterinary Clinic join First Opinions to discuss the ins and outs, and ups and downs, of going it alone – from the inauspicious start that saw them open their doors to the public just a month before COVID forced them closed again, to the pride at building a successful, thriving business under the most difficult of conditions. They are joined by veterinary business expert Alan Robinson, who offers his thoughts on the processes of starting a practice and some important tips for those considering this route for themselves.

Episode page: https://leanblog.org/451 My guest for Episode #451 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is Dr. Alan G. Robinson. He specializes in managing ideas, building high-performance organizations, creativity, innovation, quality, and lean production. He is the co-author of 13 books, many of which have been translated into more than twenty-five languages. Dr. Robinson is on the faculty of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics from the University of Cambridge. He has served on the Board of Examiners of the United States' Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and on the Board of Examiners for the Shingo Prizes for Excellence in Manufacturing. He's a returning guest (Episode 217) – talked about one of his previous books (co-authored with Dean Schroeder) — The Idea-Driven Organization. His bestselling book, Ideas Are Free, co-authored with Schroeder, was based on a global study of more than 150 organizations in 17 countries. It describes how the best companies go about getting large numbers of ideas from their front-line employees, and the competitive advantages they gain from this. His new book, available now, also co-authored with Schroeder is Practical Innovation in Government: How Front-Line Leaders Are Transforming Public-Sector Organizations. Today, we discuss topics and questions including: As we've learned from you previously… “Roughly 80 percent of any organization's improvement potential lies in front-line ideas.” — Potential? Continuous Improvement vs Innovation? Used to draw a distinction The Tesla factory doesn't have the continuous improvement culture of NUMMI? How much progress have you seen in terms of executives understanding the power of engaging everybody in bring forward and implementing ideas? Alan's first book was with Shingo — “mass creativity” UMass Memorial Health — 100,000 ideas and your role helping them? Tell us about the new book — what prompted you and Dean to write this for this audience? What prompted the research? Educating / influencing elected leaders vs. career government employees The role of front-line leaders vs. senior leaders vs. elected officials? Non-partisan – almost 50/50 from their research party wise The phrase “practical innovation”? Does adopting these practices mean we are “running government like a business”?? Adoption at local (including schools), state, or federal levels? Does “practical innovation” get past pointing simply to budgets as a barrier? Demanding cost savings or ROI is a kiss of death for improvement? 1841 — Original article that invented cost/benefit analysis… “only useful for the simplest…” “Why cost/benefit analysis is stupid“ Would we expect government in Japan to be a leader in Kaizen?
For the final instalment of our Big 6 series, sponsored by Purina, we revisited the topics from our previous five articles and asked our panel the question: “Where do we go from here?” We asked former RCVS president and IVC chief medical officer Amanda Boag, veterinary business consultant Alan Robinson, practice owner Lorna Clark, Purina's scientific affairs manager Libby Sheridan and innovation expert Greg Dickens to help us find the answer. The topics discussed in our final live forum covered the previous parts of this series: • transformational technology • client care • engaging employees • finance and regulation • operational opportunities

Should Dublin Port relocate? Yes, according to a submission made to Dublin City Council by a group called the Docklands Business Forum, as the council prepares its development plan for the city for the next six years. But the idea also has many detractors, not least Dublin Port Company which plans to grow its operations where it is. Alan Robinson is CEO of the Docklands Business Forum and he joins Ciaran and Current Affairs editor Arthur Beesley to explain why he thinks the port would be better off elsewhere. Ciaran is also joined by Dublin editor Olivia Kelly to look at why Dublin City Council wants to block the construction of "build-to-rent" apartments in the city, and how it is running into problems in its efforts to do so. Please welcome my guest of today's episode, energy work specialist, solitary practitioner of Eastern and Western traditions, martial artist and author Peter Mark Adams. Just a few weeks ago Peter published a book with Inner Traditions and the title is ‘The Power of the Healing Field: Energy Medicine, Psi Abilities, and Ancestral Healing'. In this interview, Peter will tell our audience a bit about his personal path, starting out in in his earliest childhood in being hypersensitive to presences, continuing with a trip to Egypt aged 8-9 visiting the Great Pyramid which experience culminated in the feeling of finally coming home.In his early teens Peter started to read material on magic, visiting libraries with first editions of Blavatsky's works, taking in everything he could. However, it wasn't until much later that the framework for all this knowledge was finally provided by his interest in and practice of martial arts through which he gained a profound proficiency in energy work. Peter continued to broaden his education in the Western and Eastern Esoteric Traditions with QBL, ritual magic, freemasonry, Buddhism, Tantra just to name a few different topics. The specific path of energy work that Peter is dedicated to and which is also the main focus of his most recent book is Reiki. Now this could definitely be a red flag to some of us because we in the ‘Western World' do have certain ideas and concepts of Reiki which is of course fuelled by the sheer mass of people labelling themselves ‘Reiki Masters/Practitioners'. However, as you'll easily recognise during our conversation, Peter is able to correct this rather superficial impression as he goes into great detail of what Reiki means to him and how he came to study and practice this system. He will explain the importance of lineage in the tradition of Mikao Usui, give profound insights into the inner mechanisms of Reiki and point out the differences between initiates and practitioners and what it takes to go from here to there. Peter Mark Adam's three books published so far Of course, the main focus of our conversation will be Peter's new book which can boldly be called a bridge between Eastern and Western Esoteric Traditions. We'll talk about his initial experiences with the healing methods presented in it, healing fields, ethics and he'll also point out what real red flags are when seeking help from a self-proclaimed healing expert. The creation of fields, not only specifically healing fields, will be another very interesting topic where Peter explains how most of us seem to suffer from a weird kind of hangover from mind and body dualism and how practitioners can generate a field in order to access a larger reservoir of consciousness to work with which is not that far away from ceremonial magical concepts as one might think. In the end, Peter will tell us about his next projects, one book on the Eleusinian mysteries which is to be published this year, and another where he attempts no less task than to recover the rites of Mithras – looking forward reading both of them. Author's webpage for Peter Mark Adams Music played in this episode I could not resist the pleasure to bring someone back on the Thoth Hermes Podcast, who the regulars have already enjoyed several times here: WENDY RULE In the first two seasons you were able to hear two of her powerful songs as into and outro of the show. And in our very first episode she appeared for that reason also in a short interview, after my talk with Alan Robinson. Why can't we get medicinal marijuana in the UK? The UK accounts for 70% of the export market around the world for medical cannabis and yet it seems there is no way to legitimately get a marijuana prescription. THANKFULLY, Alan Robinson, better known as NICannaguy on Instagram, is pushing the boat out and has opened the very first medicinal marijuana cafe in Northern Ireland. Don't be going in expecting to get an ounce of chronic though, he's there to help people get access to a legitimate prescription, not to flog it himself - although he does sell CBD and a bunch of CBD infused coffees and oils. Alan was kind enough to walk me through the legality of this situation in the UK and Northern Ireland, the campaign he has been on to get weed legalised for medical use, and the progress he has made. https://www.instagram.com/nicannaguy/ HELP ME CROWDFUND MY GAMESTOP BOOK. Empathy is espoused as the ultimate ‘soft skill' that vets and nurses need to be successful in veterinary practice. The assumption is that empathy and compassion in vets increases client satisfaction and therefore practice success through better compliance, better patient outcomes and better financial rewards. However, vets, particularly new graduates, are highly trained in clinical knowledge but lack the emotional intelligence skills of empathy and compassion to deal with the stressors of day to day practice, hence the burnout, anxiety and depression – so the story goes. This podcast converted from a webinar, explores the research findings and proposes some solutions to this ongoing dilemma in practice. Sponsored by MWI

This week our guest is Alan Robinson: Author, Speaker and Professor at UMASS Amherst's Isenburg School of Management. As Alan says: "Roughly 80 percent of any organization's improvement potential lies in front-line ideas. If your organization is not set up to tap these, you are operating with, at best, one fifth of your capability." In this episode, Alan and I chat about the shortcomings of MBA programs in the 80's and 90's and what that's gotten us into now, how the learning process should never stop, what (negative) effects on the psyche power has, as well as the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment. Perhaps the biggest "a-ha" moment for me was when Alan makes the very poignant point that continuous improvement is a "bottom up" endeavor. Alan's research, and his stories, prove this to be true, and he's helped numerous organizations around the world achieve ever-greater levels of attainment. It was a thought-provoking and insightful chat; I hope you like it!
