He knew the Earth is young, and its crust is unstable, and therefore governments should be in the business of figuring out how to more accurately predict earthquakes by, among other things, examining how the weather works with other factors to trigger seismic events!   *Owner of a Broken Heart: Find out how an octopus trap, and Valentine's Day combine for a medical diagnosis you never want to hear!   *Life & Marriage: Hear about a study confirming that married men live longer!   *The Grand Tour: Dr. James Tour is a synthetic organic chemist, with a Bachelor in chemistry from Syracuse, a Ph.D. in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry from Purdue, and postdoctoral training in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin and Stanford, almost 800 research publications, over 130 patents (& another 100 pending). Dr. Tour also has a strong presence on YouTube, and an offer for anyone who is not a believer to hear how he became believer in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ.   *Cancer & Molecular Jackhammers: Hear Dr. Tour describe his work in cancer research using nano-machines and light! And pair this show with our interview with Dr. Thomas Seyfried on Cancer as a metabolic disease.   *Graphene, Recycling & Catching the Falling Sky: You'll hear about Dr. Tour's exciting work researching less expensive ways to produce graphene, (a substance we've discussed here on RSR), his research into methods for recycling electronic waste, and more efficient ways for hysterical materialists to capture all the carbon dioxide they want!   *Professing the Gospel: If you are unconvinced of the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ, Dr. Tour wants to hear from you!

Have you been wondering if you can integrate games into a formal school curriculum? Do you want to enrich a potentially dry subject area with something fun? How do find games that intrigue students and light the fire of interest? More importantly, how do you make the time?   This week, Laura and Chris pull back the curtain and show how they plan for games during the school year that enliven studies and reinforce concepts. Join us as we talk about games for Ancient Roman History.   This episode serves as a preview for several of the games that we will be covering in depth in the coming weeks. Be sure to stay tuned as we will be going further up and further in.   Recommended  Games:   Circus Maximus – This fun simulation of chariot racing, published by Avalon Hill, is now a collectible. Replacement boards and pieces, along with chariot minis, can be purchased though Camelot Games. Gladiator – Not entirely historically accurate, this Avalon Hill game is more like a Hollywood version of gladiator fighting, but it makes a great conversation starter for discussions of Roman culture. Camelot Games is, again, your best source for replacement pieces. Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea – This recently published board game from GMT Games looks to be a worthy successor to other broad scale strategy games like Civilization. If you’re trying to learn Mediterranean geography and the civilizations that exist in competition with Rome, especially with older students, this looks like it’s going to be a great addition. Pax Romana – Another GMT game, focusing on the various competing empires in the Mediterranean between 300 BC and 100 AD. Imperium Romanum II – This West End Games simulation of the Roman Empire is currently out-of-print, but searching the collector's market is well worth the effort.  Republic of Rome – This classic Avalon Hill game is a simulation of Roman politics during the Roman Republic. Falling Sky & Ariovistus – A Counterinsurgency simulation from GMT games, Falling Sky goes deep into the Gallic Wars. If you're reading through Julius Caesar's account in either the original or translation, this would be an excellent complement and help bring the text to life. Command & Colors Ancients – This ancient battle simulation is reasonably simple and fast playing, with many scenarios being playable within an hour once the rules are understood. The base game contains battles from the Punic Wars. Several expansions are available which cover a large number of the most important military engagements in the ancient world.  Outmatched – We love IEW for their writing curricula, but their foray into games has been just as satisfying. This quick-playing card game helps drill history facts in a highly rewarding manner. Palatinus – If you want to dig into the earliest foundations of the city, this tile and card game from Mayfair Games will help with learning the populations vying for control of the Palatine hill and the village that would rule the world. By Jove – A "monopoly" style game from Aristoplay, this now collectible game is a fun way to learn about Roman Mythology. Roman Dice Games – This set includes reproduction pigs' knuckles, as well as 6 standard wooden dice, and a collection of rules for early dice games.  Child Sized Masterpieces – This is a Montessori-style approach to art appreciation, using postcard sized art cards and a series of matching games to help build familiarity with artists and schools of art. The book includes directions for creating your own expansions, and we'll be putting together sets for Roman sculpture, mosaics, and architecture for our household.   Recommended Reading: Candyland Was Invented for Polio Wards – This article in the Atlantic covers the fascinating story behind the beloved childhood game.   Can't see the links? Hunger, Thirst, Sleep and Exposure all wear down on you in a battle of attrition with the unstoppable Dead. Find the answer to the question "just how long would I survive" as you and your friends attempt to do just that. What makes Z-LAND unique is we take the survival aspect of survival-horror very seriously. You will see your character weaken as sleep deprivation, hunger & thirst slowly whittle them down. But that is where the choice comes in, will you just take it? Or will you do anything & everything necessary to survive? How much of yourself can you retain in your battle to survive? In the early days of the outbreak with panic settling in, you will decide your fate. Hunker down and horde as many supplies as you can or try and flee the cities with thousands of others? Your decisions in the early days will greatly effect the path of survival you take. Will you group up with other survivors and put your trust in them? Or will try and make it on your own, unable to trust the fast changing face of human-kind. All that is good and well but with the constant threat of the “living dead” you might not have the luxury of choice. They are quick and relentless, they do not suffer the penalties of hunger & thirst and have little need for sleep. They are the living nightmare that will never stop hunting your kind. You will lose people along the way, friends, family and it won’t be easy but survival never is. This is your story and you will decide it’s end...

After ten years of caring for three different family members who died four months apart, Andrea McMillan woke up to the realization that she was no longer responsible for the well-being of anyone but herself and her healthy daughter. On today's show, Andrea talks about life after caregiving, or what she describes as emerging from a coma, from expanding her wardrobe beyond the same few outfits worn day in and day out and pursuing dormant passions, to carving out a new identity for herself, exhaling and learning how to laugh again. Andrea also talks about the brother who was checked out during her caregiving decade, how her attitude toward him has changed and how she continues to evolve on her journey of rediscovery. Opener: A light wargame! Miracle on the Loire: Joan of Arc   My buddy DaveO has been on the podcast before, talking about euro gaming at Essen, or if any games are good for five players. Like most of us, he's played an overwhelming number of strategy boardgames over the years. The didn't include wargames, though he was kind of curious about them. In 2016 he was "tricked" into going to GMT Games' Warehouse at the Weekend, and found himself first horrified by and later part of the wargaming going on there. This makes him a good ambassador to regular boardgamers who don't think in terms of hexagons, Combat Results Tables, and lines of supply. He still remembers watching "pipe-smoking history professors" stick their noses in rulebooks while little happened on their gameboards, an activity that didn't look fun at all. That's not exactly the kind of wargaming he's doing now, but DaveO definitely HAS become a wargamer. Are you wondering what all the fuss is about Falling Sky, Churchill, or W1815? Whether you are looking to dive into the deep end of wargaming, or just want to see what a smaller/shorter wargame can be like, I hope this conversation between DaveO and I can give you some answers. Definitely also look at Jim Cote's excellent blog post, Wargames: Barriers to Entry. I agree with all but two points of it. Which two points? Let's discuss in the comments. Another month, another podcast! More important, another famous subject of military history. I'm planning to get through one topic per month to maximize my subjects to study & visit during my year in Europe. I have to say, though--this month illustrated that it doesn't me dive in as deeply as I'd like. As with most of you, I don't have a ton of time to get wargames on the table, especially during the week. Even with my focus on the small titles, they still take time. Especially if they require print & play preparations, and you feel the need to round counter corners.   Volko Ruhnke   Am I supposed to root for the Gauls? As an American of Swedish ancestry, who can say? As an engineer, though, I am in awe of the Roman army. I picked Alesia for a few reasons. I didn't want to fall into the trap of focusing exclusively on WW2 battles while living here. Going all the way back to Ancients is a good cure for that. Sure enough, I quickly found the subject as fascinating as any from WW2. There was a whole lot to learn here, as much about the Gallic society as the Roman army and one particular battle. Some of my reading was about the individual battle, and some was about the entire Gallic War. There's a hot game right now that covers that broader conflict. Though I knew I wouldn't get to it myself just now, I was pleased to interview designer Volko Ruhnke and hear some of the design features and objectives of Falling Sky. Alesia Frédéric Bey also offered me a chance to see the battlefield. At least, where we THINK the battle took place. I got to see the museum there, the reconstructions of Roman fortifications, and take in the view from the hilltop where Vercingetorix may have once stood in the oppidum of Alesia. There are some competing theories among historians for the location, though, so one wargame designer made a second title with the most prominent alternative. That designer is my other interview subject for the podcast, Frédéric Bey.   Movies Ugh, are you sure you want to look at these? I didn't--they look terrible. • The Gaul (2001) • Caesar the Conqueror (1962) • Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar (1999) (Ok, not history, but any Frenchman will remember Asterix if you bring up Alesia) • The Conquerors - Episode 12: Caesar - Conqueror of Gaul (a "History Channel documentary," but a pretty good one) Books • The Gallic War by Julius Caesar • Alesia 52 BC by Nic Fields • Caesar's Legion by Stephen Dando-Collins Remember to follow along & chime in on my geeklist/discussion) for all of my Dunkirk & explorations. If you're a wargamer on social media, follow me on Twitter (@WargamesToGo). Feedback is always welcome. -Mark P.S. If you want to get started on my next topic, it will be The Battle of the Bulge.

Summer may be winding down but Book Talk is heating up with a lineup of inspiring (and inspired!) authors who join host Ryan Van Winkle to talk about their upcoming books, how they work humour into even the most harrowing stories, their admiration for flawed characters and how jazz wakes up the mind.Genre-defying Helen Fitzgerald gets things started with a discussion of The Cry, her latest novel, which is available on e-readers now and will be released in paperback in September. The Cry, like many of her other books, follows two people who find themselves in an unimaginably awful situation and end up making perhaps the worst possible decisions. Find out more about the book, and the surprising connection Helen has found between writing and her former career in criminal justice. Also, check out her list of five books her fans will like that don't necessarily fit into the crime fiction genre.New Writers Awardee Pippa Goldschmidt is also celebrating the release of a book, her first, The Falling Sky. This tale of a young astronomer who makes an extraordinary discovery that not only shakes the foundations of science itself, but also has her questioning her entire life and delving into her painful past manages to mix complex family drama with science and dark comedy, as she reveals the cutthroat underbelly of academia. As an academic herself, it's a world she knows well. But beyond campus politics, this is also the tale of a woman dealing with her demons, as well as a meditation on how we tend to see and understand other people. Finally, Ryan catches up with Naomi Alderman, one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists, who recently collaborated with jazz band The Moss Project to write a story based on one of their songs. According to Naomi, after listening to the song over and over, the story suddenly just came, the inspiration doubtless assisted by the fact that, according to her, 'Moss's music makes interesting things happen in my brain. Jazz in general does--it wakes up your brain.' Discover how music has wound its way into her writing in the past, and hear the story and the song that inspired it.
