Episode 136: A Conversation about CORE

ArtBeat Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2022 11:08

Welcome back to Artbeat Radio! in this episode, EPI student Carlos Arredondo will ask EPI art instructors Dezcjon and Marissa some questions about the most recent exhibition, the CORE show. The CORE show was a big deal for EPI service users; it was the first show for those who are participating in in-person services to get to work with their peers and instructors on all pieces together in person. Collectively, both in-person and virtually, EPI submitted a total of eight pieces for the show. We hope you enjoy listening to Carlos Arredondo interview Dezcjon and Marissa on the CORE show process.  Collaborators on this episode: service users Greco Ancona, Carlos Arredondo, Emilio Lopez; staff Dezcjon, Marissa, and Morgan.    *Intro music by Artbeat Radio staff*  Music, stories, and more! You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program by Able ARTS Work.  Morgan: On this episode of Artbeat Radio, EPI student Carlos Arredondo will ask EPI art instructors Dezcjon and Marissa some questions about our most recent exhibition, the CORE show.  Carlos A: How did you and my peers decide what projects we would work on?  Dezcjon: So with the CORE show we, me and Marissa, we went about giving the clients creative control being this was one of the first shows we got to prepare for in person. We wanted to see what they were interested in showing and expressing. So we sat down with them [for] about a week just brainstorming on pieces they wanted to continue to work on; like some pieces from before the pandemic we hadn't got to finish, as well as new ideas. And just some collaborations too, like some clients wanted to work with friends they hadn't seen in a while.  Marissa: We decided first by making.. We worked as a group and then we asked the students what they want to decide as the title and the theme for that show.   Carlos A: Tell me about the final pieces that [were] accepted?  Dezcjon: It was cool to see some of the final pieces come together. The students knew what they wanted in mind. Some like Carlos, Carlos A., made it clear he wanted to work with Carlos C. They collaborated together to make artwork called "Sunshine and Flores.” It started off with a piece Carlos C. did back in 2018 using some yellow and red paint, making a very warm background, but it looked like he hadn't finished it maybe. So Carlos [A.] had saw that and was asking about the upcoming show and if he could work with Carlos C. And they ended up making "Sunshine and Flores” which has the warm sun rays, some yellow and reds, look like probably by hand, smeared in the background, and then Carlos A. came back with some acrylic paint markers and created a very happy sun with some cool blue flowers at the bottom. And it was cool to see pieces like that come together. Another final piece that was cool to see come together was Mr. happy face by Greco. Greco was very hyped to create a solo piece for the show. And he was one of the clients who actually got to visit the gallery with me during the pandemic and he expressed how much he enjoyed being there. And when I asked him about you know, what kind of stuff he wanted to show in the new gallery space he expressed you know, he wanted to show something that showed how happy he was to be back at program with his friends. Which ended up with him coming up his piece Mr. Happy Face. Which, the background he painted with some green paint and blue paint with brushes, and then he actually used paint markers for the orange spots. And then as far as his smiling happy looking character Mr. Happy Face, Greco drew him out with paint markers and then added the details like his hair and smiling face last to make it pop.  Marissa: The final title of [one of] the show [pieces] that was accepted was “The Red Jelly” by Daniel and [in collaboration with] his family. The family decided to draw what they [all] want and they asked Daniel first, and they gave him a binary option what he wants to draw. Like it's about the marine animal so they asked Daniel if it is like jellyfish or like whale and he raised his hands to choose the red jelly.   Carlos A: Tell me about your favorite piece(s) from the show?  Dezcjon: I would have to say all the pieces my favorite. This was the first show we got to prepare for in person with like, the majority of the clients being here to work on hands-on. I aIso got to engage with some of the clients that's virtual and it was cool just to see up close and personal like everybody like really preparing for a show. Opposed to like, us talking via zoom and different things but never getting to see the actual work. It was cool to just to be able to help the clients that was here, you know, fine tune whatever idea they wanted to put onto their artwork and canvas.  Marissa: All the pieces for the show by my favorite is the one I worked with [on] Daniel because I learned more about Daniel and his family. Especially [since] I came from TAP II and it's my first time to work with Daniel. The piece is about jellyfish and Daniel colored it with red, which is one of his favorite color aside from purple.  Carlos A: Tell me about the process for Mountain, Flowers, and Lines?  Dezcjon: So, the artwork “Mountain, Flowers, and Lines,” that was that was a piece I was happy to see in the show. Some history on that piece - that was something the students started back in 2020, right before the pandemic, right when I got hired, that was one of the first collaborative pieces I got to put together with clients. So honestly some time passed, and our director ended up finding it at program and asked me about it, and we had the idea of getting it back going. We actually sent it to Carlos [A.] for a little bit while we were virtual, and he started off and added some more to it. And then he was also you know, he expressed being excited just that we still had it, hadn't lost it. And I you know, I let him know like we value you guys' work so know for sure we keep the stuff archived and stored for you. But to see them finish it and actually get it into the show when we returned back to program, that was pretty cool. Cool to see.  Carlos A: What what what was it like to work for the show in-person and virtual?   Dezcjon: So the main difference between working on the show virtual and in person honestly just being able to help clients more hands-on. Whether it be like doing some hand over hand assistance if they trying to get something precise or just instructing them you know how to get their idea across. And doing class is virtually you can still help the clients and for sure I say that's better than nothing to still be their moral support and get an idea of what they working on. But in person it definitely I think benefits both the instructor and the clients because its right in front of you um as far as scale, as far as detail, colors, you can really help them you know, thrive. And it's just good to see all the clients excited about painting and these collaborations, so that's also another benefit I say of being in person. But I think we still also have to strive to do the best we can to make virtual you know as meaningful and pleasurable as possible because those clients want to support and be in shows and do the best work they can too.  Marissa: I like both uh virtual and in person teaching. In person I was able to get to know the rest of the students that I don't know especially [since] I came from TAP II. And for virtual I learned more about the technology and it was enjoyable knowing all the techniques and then how to you know facilitate the zoom. Everything is about technology and I like it.  Carlos A: Which one [was] more more enjoyable? And why?  Dezcjon: Um, that's a hard one. I for sure had a great experience virtual because it allowed me to get like to know more homes and families and caregivers for some of our clients and it was an experience for all of us that was new; a lot of digital artwork. But for sure working in person would have to be my favorite because one we got a lot more murals to do. It's good to see the clients' smiling faces and the energy they have with doing all these new things outside of art like seeing, like them excited about art seeing them excited about drama, music, it's just different and it feels good to be back in person. So for sure how to say in person my favorite.  Marissa: [Both] virtual and on-site. On-site you get to know the students and aside from getting to know the students you're going to work more of the arts. And you are able to practice all the skills you are learning in the school. And on virtual both of you are learning about technology.  *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff* Thanks for listening, and tune in next time!

Introduction: Hello everyone, and welcome back to ArtBeat Radio!  This EPI from the Able Arts!  Here we have some original parodies and some original music that we have been working on for the past couple of weeks.  We hope you enjoy it and have a great rest of your day.  Rudy's Loops IntroductionIn this piece called, “Rudy's Loops,” created by Rudy Austin, it's a collection on pre-recorded loops from the software Garage Band, that was put together in the specific order, and put in a specific tempo that Rudy felt best. It's a collection of many different melodies, and showcases a lot of different instruments and sounds that Rudy enjoyed on Garage Band.  We hope that you enjoy this piece as much as we enjoyed creating it.  Don't Worry This piece is a parody based of the song Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin.  All of the music parody lab class here at EPI chose this song specifically and they brainstormed a couple of ideas that they wanted to have it be about and ultimately, they decided they wanted it to be about friendship and traveling.  In this song you'll hear references about Austin Texas and spending time with friends, and overall it was a super fun experience to create lyrics and melodies that talk about the importance of friendship and also the fun times you can have by traveling.  We hope you enjoy it! InstrumentsShakers: Daniel Jacobs, Myla Irving, Piano: Rita Komsky, Emilio LopezVocals: Greco Ancona, Elizabeth Correa, Jamond Pearson, Griselda Ramos, Jessica DawsonTambourine: John NonnetteGuitar: Jermaine FreemanDrums: Rudy Austin, Elizabeth Correa LyricsVerse 1We'll dedicate this song I wrote It might want to make you fly to Austin Don't worry, be joyful In every life we have familyWe can see them around the world Don't worry, be joyful Travel and LoveChorusDo, do, do...Verse 2Ain't got no place to stay But you can always stay with me Don't worry, be joyful We can explore lots of things Maybe try the best foods and sing Don't worry, be joyfulChorusDo, do, do...Verse 3 Ain't got no worry, ain't got no care Ain't got no way to make you frown Don't worry, be joyful Have some fun in the city  Austin makes me smile every bit So don't worry, be joyfulChorusDo, do, do... I Love The Piano“I Love the Piano” is an original parody created by the Music Parody Lab class here at EPI and is based off the song You've Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman. Basically, in this song, the class decided to write about the piano, their love for the piano, the different things you can do on the piano, and just overall, the great qualities that this instrument has.  They had so much fun creating it, and we hope you enjoy it as well. InstrumentsPiano/Electric Piano: Greco Ancona, Rita Komsky, Emilio Lopez, Jessica DawsonDrums: Carlos Arredondo, Daniel JacobsVocals: Jamond Pearson, Griselda Ramos, Jessica DawsonShakers: Jessica Woods, Adam MuriedaGuitar: JermaineGarageband Loops: bass, electric guitar and drums LyricsVerse 1There's nothing betterThan the keys right hereWhen I'm sad I'll just play alongTil I feel the joy deep inside my soulI'll change the rhythm and the tempo I love the pianoVerse 2There's so many keysExactly 88The piano is so beautifulIt never disappointsI'll change the rhythm and the tempoI love the pianoBridgeIt's the most beautiful soundPlaying around the roomThere's nothing better than playing with you my friendIt's me and you foreverVerse 3So I'll play alongWhile you sit by meIt will be the best time you'll see I love the pianoClosing Thank you so much for listening to our episode here at EPI Center, and we hope you enjoyed the musical pieces that we created just as much as we had fun creating them.  We hope you have a great rest of your day and we'll see you here again soon!

Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! You're listening to episode 22 of Quarantunes, where quarantine can't stop our creativity! In this episode, we'll hear musical expression from the artists at EPI. (0:16) “Happy Holiday Blues” - EPI musicians, Jamond Pearson, Adam Muraida, Elizabeth Correa, Emilio Zuniga, Roberto Lugardo, Rudolph (Rudy) Austin, Daniel Jacobs For this holiday number, the students in EPI the Musical, as well as guest stars from Curators of the Lost Art voted to create a piece that was both upbeat and sentimental, hence The Blues.  In writing this song, the group processed about what was most important to them this holiday, exploring ideas that they would like while showing gratitude for having the most important things that they need.  The lyrics consist of contributions from each student. Additionally, several of our artists can be heard performing featured solos that they recorded and edited in Logic Pro.  We hope you enjoy the Happy Holiday Blues spirit!   Well, I'd like to see a reindeer  Or Christmas Lights (Adam) A helpful troop of Elves (Elizabeth) Or Santa Claus tonight (Greco) But if I don't that would alright too  I got what I need it's the happy holiday Blues   And I'd love some new clothes (Elizabeth) Or my own big Horse (Adam) Some James Brown Tickets (Jamond) New decorations (Greco) But if I don't get them, I think I'm gonna make it through I got what I need it's the happy holiday blues   I'm happy because I've got what I need  Family, Love, and friends with me  I feel the music in my soul  Pumping that positive tune  That's why I got what I need with   the happy holiday blues   Well I'm craving some hot chocolate  Or Christmas Ham  Rice with butter  Or a Gingerbread Man  But if I can't eat them, I'll still feel full it true  I'm full with what I need it's the happy holiday blues  You know I'd love to play some Board Games  Or bake cookies  Decorate the tree  Match a Christmas movie But if I can't do that, I'll still have fun with you I got what I need it's the happy holiday blues  Featured Soloists  Jamond Pearson:  Vocal Riffs – “fun with you,” “positive tune,” “here comes Santa Claus too,” “Good Job Rudy,” “oh yeah” “Happy Holidays to you” “Holiday Blues..yeah!” Adam Muraida:  Xylophone solo  Conducted placement of snaps and guiro   Verbalization: “tree” and “horse”  Elizabeth Correa   Vocalization solo  Conducted placement of jingle bells and claps   Emilio Zuniga  Verbalization “YUM”  Roberto Lugardo Verbalization: “and that's the blues” Rudolph (Rudy) Austin:  Vocalization “UH”  Daniel Jacobs Vocalization   (4:16) “Holiday Song” - EPI Musicians, Carlos Arredondo, Joyce Go, Daniel Jacobs, Rita Komsky and Emilio Lopez This piece was created by the artists from EPI's Social Music Therapy Group in celebration of the holidays that each of them celebrate. The holidays that are included in this piece are Christmas and Hannukah. Each lyric is a holiday tradition from each of the artists with their family and friends. The artists created a list of traditions and placed them in a lyrical format to form a song. All lyrics were written by the artists and each artist contributed a vocal or instrumental improvisation into the piece.   I feel happy watching movies  Like Rudolph and his songs  There's Christmas carols to sing all day long  On Christmas Eve we'll get the best tamales out  That's what it's all about   Come on let's sing this holiday song   Hanukkah has come around  I can hardly wait  We'll light the menorah  I'm counting down the days  Playing dreidel with my family  Singing songs like these really brings me peace   Shaker: Daniel Jacobs Piano: Emilio Lopez Vocals: Joyce Go, Daniel Jacobs, Rita Komsky and Emilio Lopez  (6:56) Let it Snow – Dean Martin (cover) by Jamond Pearson, Adam Muraida, Emilio Lopez, and Greco Ancona EPI musicians bring you a cover of a winter classic, Let it Snow! In this tune you'll hear a jolly backing track that features EPI voices and instruments. Oh, the weather outside is frightful But the fire is so delightful And since we've no place to go Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow  It doesn't show signs of stopping And I've brought me some corn for popping The lights are turned way down low Let it snow, let it snow  When we finally say goodnight How I'll hate going out in the storm But if you really hold me tight All the way home I'll be warm  And the fire is slowly dying And, my dear, we're still goodbyeing But as long as you love me so Let it snow, let it snow, and snow  When we finally say goodnight How I'll hate going out in the storm But if you really grab me tight All the way home I'll be warm  And the fire is slowly dying And, my dear, we're still goodbyeing But as long as you love me so Let it snow, let it snow, and snow   Thank you to EPI for this album artwork!  Thanks for listening and tune in next time! Amid unprecedented orders for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, DC Comics has announced that it will be reprinting the title's first four issues in November.Earlier this month, DC Comics revealed that Superman's son, Jon Kent, will be coming out as bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5. The news made headlines around the world and inspired what DC calls "unprecedented orders" for the issue. The sales have even surpassed the previously reported 68,000 copies that Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 sold upon its launch in July. To support the renewed interest in the title, DC will now be rushing new printings of the first four issues of the series. The newly released Nubia & The Amazons #1 by DC Comics has broken new ground, marking the first time Wonder Woman's Amazons welcome a transgender woman into their society in a touching and unforgettable moment.Nubia's time as Queen of the Amazons is showcased in the new DC series from Stephanie Williams, Vita Ayala, Alitha Martinez, Mark Morales, Emilio Lopez, and Becca Carey. Beginning with a flashback to Nubia's own arrival on Themiscyra, readers are reminded of the Amazons' mystical Well of Souls: a portal through which women who have died as a result of the terror of 'Man's World' are reborn, given new life among the immortal women. The five new sisters born of the Well (who represent the first group of women to come through the well in some time) wake up without knowing who they were, where they are, or what's to come next. And for one, it is a rebirth they have spent their entire life waiting for.A HUGE Thank You To All My Patreon, Members, & Subscribe Stars! Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! You're listening to episode 19 of Quarantunes ,where quarantine can't stop our creativity! Today we have a spooky episode from EPI!  (0:18) “Ghostbusters” cover by EPI Musicians (Carlos Arredondo, Greco Ancona, Emilio Lopez, Jamond Pearson, Adam Muraida, Griselda Ramos) EPI Musicians reimagine a Halloween classic! In this tune, you will hear brand new lyrics depicting a brand new monster, a spooky dancing chef (as seen on the album artwork)! EPI musicians worked on recreating the lyrics, recording their own voices, and recording their own instruments to add to the iconic backing track.  If something smells good Under your kitchen hood Who you gonna call?  Ghostbusters!   If you hear a guitar And it sounds real good Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!  I ain't 'fraid of no chef I ain't 'fraid of no chef If you find him cooking  Hiding in your closet Who can you call?  Ghostbusters!   Making spooky empanadas Singing spooky songs Ow, who you gonna call?  Ghostbusters!   I ain't 'fraid of no chef I ain't 'fraid of no chef Big muscles and bigger teeth He loves to dance on Halloween He's a dancing chef with crazy eyes  Who you gonna call?  Ghostbusters!  (2:43) "Track 2 Field Trip: Pumpkin Patch” - EPI Musicians (Rita Komsky, Joyce Go, Daniel Jacobs, Griselda Ramos and Emilio Lopez) “The Pumpkin Patch” is a musical representation by the artists of Track 2 Social Music Therapy of a group field trip to the Pumpkin Patch.  The artists collaboratively brainstormed and wrote this story in a Mad-Lib process, by each contributing salient words that influenced the direction of the plotline.  Once the story was complete, the group worked together to set it to music in Logic Pro by selecting aesthetic preferences for instrumentation and effects.  Additionally, each artist utilized their strengths and abilities to record featured solos that can be heard on the timeline.  We hope you enjoy our explorative experience!  Featured Soloists  Jonathan Draper: Conducting Claps  Rita Komsky  Maraca  Whistle  Joyce Go  Verbalization: “Home”   Vocal riff: “OOOO”  Table top drumming   Daniel Jacobs:   Vocalization   Conducting egg shaker   Emilio Lopez  Vocal riff: “OOO”  Verbalization: “ME”  Griselda Ramos: Vocal Scatting  One brisk October morning The leaves were turning orange The track 2 artists decided “Hey, let's take a field trip!” Oh Rita said, “It's autumn are there's too much fun to miss!” Ooooo, too much fun to miss So Johnny, Joyce and Rita Yo-Yo, Daniel and Grisa Hopped in the car and headed to the pumpkin patch  Daniel shouted, “We are going to have such a blast!” Oooo, have such a blast As the group was driving Pumping that hip hop music They saw the silliest scarecrow that they ever seen It made Grisa excited for Halloween Oooo, excited for Halloween  When they arrived, they couldn't believe their eyes There were pumpkins spread all over Sweet treats, horses and rides Oooo, Johnny thought, “We are having the very best time” Ooo, they very best time  They each picked a pumpkin Some were big and orange Some were small and green But each one was just right Joyce sang, “I can't wait to take this home tonight” Oooo, take this home tonight  Then as the sun fell over The group felt chilly and hungry So they shared some candy And nice big pot of hot chocolate Yo-Yo thought, “I'm so lucky I got all my friends with me” So lucky I got all my friends with me  (6:07) “The Spookiness in the Rain” by Rudy Austin In this Halloween focused piece, EPI artist Rudy Austin created this song with a collection of sounds that resemble a spooky and Halloween-themed essence. Rudy selected specific sounds himself to be included in this piece and then provided a musical improvisation on the organ that he played himself. The organ improvisations and accompaniment were recorded with Garageband, the wolf sounds came from the video “Wolves Howling Sounds” on Youtube and the thunder and lightning sound effect was recorded from the video “EPIC THUNDER & RAIN, Rainstorm sounds for Relaxing”.   (7:45) “Spooky EPI Family” - EPI Musicians (Adam Muraida, Jamond Pearson, Elizabeth Correa, Emilio Zuniga, and Greco Ancona) The students of Track 1 EPI the musical collaboratively wrote the song “Spooky EPI Family” through a process of brainstorming shared favorite ideas, and imaginative plot lines that they wanted to musically convey.  After voting on concepts to create the lyrics, the group worked together to select their musical aesthetic preferences for instrumentation and effects in Logic Pro.  Once the song was written and recorded, the artists selected personalized elements in the form of solo recordings, instrument samples or sound effects to add to our timeline.  Put finished product highlights strengths of each spooky family member, hence the group-selected title: The Spooky EPI Family.  We hope you have a happy haunted listen.    Featured Soloists  Adam Muraida:   “haunted ukulele solo,”    verbalizing words: (horse, football)  Jamond Pearson:   riffing “ooo” in interlude   singing “let's get spooky now”  Elizabeth Correa:  Conducting guiro placement  Conducting sound effects: witch cackle and cat meow  Emilio Zuniga:   Vocalization in interlude  Conducting werewolf howl  Greco Ancona:  Conducting placement of thunder sounds  Spiders spinning on the wall          Ghosts that flutter, winds that call  Zombie Soccer players pass the ball  Looks like spooky season   Leaves crackle on the ground  Black cats slink at the sound  Witches cackle through the night  Stealing chocolate in their flight!   It's magical mischief time  Enchanting every rhyme  Playing Haunted ukuleles  Meet our spooky family   Adam rides his flying horse  Jamond sees Yoda his room  Elizabeth twists her magic hands  Greco paints his pumpkins   Emilio waves to ogre friends Track 1 does their spooky dance  Leaving goblins in a trance  Looks like quite a night!    Thank you to EPI for this album artwork!   Thanks for listening and tune in next time! The review embargo for Horizon Zero Dawn lifted this past Monday. As you would expect, the game got mostly positive reviews from a number of outlets. Not surprisingly, there was severe backlash from the zealous members of the Xbox community. Like they did when Uncharted 4 was universally praised, the hardcore "Xbots" were outraged that -- because of "media bias" -- another Sony exclusive received high scores. We dedicate our main topic to putting these foolish man-children on blast. Almost forgotten over the crazed fanboy din was the fact that Halo Wars 2 was released on Tuesday. Since Xbox fanatics were too busy hating on a Sony game rather than praise one of their exclusives, we decided to have our good friend, Richard Bailey Jr., come on the show to tell us all about this RTS sequel. Other topics we cover: - Phil Spencer says Xbox One represents the "best Xbox gen" - Sunset Overdrive could continue outside of Microsoft, says Insomniac - Crash Bandicot N-sane Trilogy might be a timed PlayStation exclusive - An Nvidia vs AMD argument ends in murder This episode features: Tony Polanco (host), Emilio Lopez (co-host), Chris Sealy, Brett Murdock, Carlos Romero, Brian Munjoma, Adam Vale, and Richard Bailey Jr. Thanks as always to Shawn Daley for our intro and outro music. Last week, our good friend HipHopGamer caused some controversy when he criticized IGN for giving Resident Evil 7 a score of 7.7. He's put reviewers "on blast" in the past, but this time, the reaction from those in the industry was decidedly vicious. Other topics we discuss: - GameStop controversial "Circle of Life" program - Phil Spencer doesn't want gamers to pre-order the Scorpio This episode features: Tony Polanco (host), Emilio Lopez (co-host), Chris Sealy, Brett Murdock, Carlos Romero, Adam Vale, and special guest, HipHopGamer.
