Voice of the People: Radio By and For the 99%

Voice of the People: Radio by and for the 99% will look at the threat to our democracy in the upcoming elections. Our word of the week is “coup.” We look at how only 22% of Americans today have confidence that the Presidential election will be “free and fair.” And we explore how a roleplay by non-Donald Trump supporting political players in the so-called Transition Integrity Project found their most contentious scenario being Biden winning the popular vote and Trump winning the Electoral vote and thus the Presidency. We follow that up with a review of the important article Matt Taibbi wrote a year ago titled “We're in a Permanent Coup,” in which he argues that it's better to have a bad president than to accepts coups and that the open insubordination shown by the leadership of the US intelligence community toward Trump adds up to a new tactic by the spooks to destabilize an elected US government and so a coup in fact. Also, in the first hour we continue to cover the pandemic and the economic catastrophe for the 99% allowed to happen by Congress while billionaires grow even richer. We take a look at how 57% of Americans thinks there needs to be a third party as an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans, and how Joe Biden is the clear favorite – in terms of donations – of US billionaires. And we follow that with a closer look at writer/journalist/prophet Chris Hedges' declaration that Biden is the candidate of choice of the elites and why it's not likely that a Trump loss will cause a civil war, despite his appeal to right-wing militias. We end the first hour reading a revealing letter from the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association to Montana Governor Steve Bullock, as an update to our coverage of the police/carceral state. In the third half hour we interview Jacob Elder, a Liberian refugee and now Missoula resident who is running for the Missoula Mayor position. Jacob tells his story on how he became a refugee as a child and how that led to his joining the US Marines, attending the University of Montana for both law and public administration degrees, and throwing his hat into the 2021 Missoula mayoral race. Then for the last part of the show we have a great conversation with sound sound guy Jim Gillan. We discuss Steven Levitsky's interview on Alternative Radio about the likelihood of a US coup, whether from Trump supporters or from other players. And we go from there with observations about the current condition of US democracy. Join us in our social distancing by listening from Noon to 2 pm on Saturdays in Missoula, Montana on 105.5 FM or streaming worldwide on 1055kfgm.org. Rachel VandeVoort is the Director of the Montana Office of Outdoor Recreation, an office that advocates for the outdoor recreation industry and works to leverage its numerous benefits to the state. The office was created in 2016 by Montana Governor Steve Bullock, and he tapped Rachel to be its first director, where she built the office from the ground up. Since then, the office has experienced amazing growth in influence and effectiveness, and it has served as a shining example for other states that have formed similar offices. - A native Montanan, Rachel has a diverse background that makes her uniquely qualified for her role as Director. She grew up working for her family's river guiding business in and around Whitefish, MT and also spent time as a fishing guide. After graduating from the University of Montana, she worked in a wide variety of industries that are closely connected with land and recreation, including organic farming, skiing, and firearms manufacturing. Thanks to her diverse and deep experience in all facets of the outdoor world, Rachel has had great success finding common ground between sometimes-competing stakeholders to harness the collective power of Montana's recreation industry. - Rachel was slated to be a keynote speaker at Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Partners in the Outdoors Conference, an annual gathering that brings together stakeholders from all corners of the conservation and outdoor recreation industries. But because of the COVID pandemic, the in-person conference was transformed into a virtual conference—and Rachel's keynote speech was transformed into this episode of Mountain & Prairie. I was thrilled to have the chance to speak with Rachel, because her work aligns so well with the theme of the Partners in the Outdoors Conference, specifically, how do we find common ground and mutually beneficial solutions for balancing conservation and recreation. - We covered a lot in a little over an hour, including the history of her job and the office, the staggering positive economic impacts of the outdoor industry, and ideas around funding conservation through recreation now and into the future. We also talked a lot about Rachel's eclectic background and how all of her varied experiences make her uniquely qualified for her position. Rachel shares some thoughts on finding common ground among competing stakeholders, the importance of understanding history in the West, and the collaborative nature of the outdoor recreation industry. Be sure the check out the episode notes for a full list of topics discussed. - Big thanks to Rachel for taking the time to chat and to Colorado Parks and Wildlife for partnering with Mountain & Prairie for this series of podcasts. If you have a chance, visit the Partners in the Outdoors website all of the conference content—there's quite a line up of virtual courses and learning opportunities. Joementum is real! So is the Coronavirus. Senator Elizabeth Warren is the last woman to exit the 2020 race for the presidency, leaving Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders to battle it out, and that's where we begin this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show when Halli and her partner in politics, former White House correspondent Matthew Cooper slice and dice all things politics, and Donald Trump, too, the podcast available at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com and on all your favorite apps. Joe Biden's run for the presidency is proving to be like a lyric from a Frank Sinatra tune. “I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing. Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race. That's life!” Now, after Elizabeth Warren exits the presidential race it's Joe vs. Bernie and we're all in for a wild ride, but not just because of Election 2020. The Coronavirus is quickly spreading across America, and despite the ample warning it was on the way, the Trump administration appears not to be prepared for the pandemic. Trump is trying to play down the severity of the disease, even telling Americans it is OK to go to work, it's just a flu. The nation isn't buying it; everyone is on edge, even Chuck Schumer and Chief Justice Roberts in a battle royale over comments the Minority Leader made. And what about that parlor game if Joe Biden becomes the Democratic Party nominee for president, who will he choose as his running mate? Oh, and Halli's favorite, Montana Governor Steve Bullock is said to be throwing his hat in the ring for the Senate seat, even though he said he wouldn't.Joementum and a nod to Frank Sinatra. Can Bernie Sanders manage a comeback? Goodbye Elizabeth Warren, hello Coronavirus. What is the future of Roe v Wade? And we're just beginning this week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show podcast, always available at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com and via all your favorite apps. Listen here>> http://bit.ly/2IpuKXL

How important is this?Asked to comment on the US offer to form an anti-Iran maritime coalition, the German Foreign Ministry told Sputnik Tuesday that Berlin is not seriously considering the US proposal. “The US recently presented its concept of a naval observation mission in the Persian Gulf to a number of its allies, including Germany, and asked them to participate. POLITICO reported last week that black and Hispanic lawmakers are furious with Bustos' stewardship of the campaign arm. They say the upper echelon of the DCCC is bereft of diversity, and it is not doing enough to reach Latino voters and hire consultants of color. In this episode, we discuss last week’s Democratic Debates. Who did well? Who has work to do? What are the tiers, and how many of these candidates could actually win the Democratic nomination? The Democratic Debates: Who “Won”? We’re starting to see some polling numbers that reflect what Democratic voters thought of the debates, and it seems clear that among the more top tier candidates, both Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris did well, while Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders failed to improve their numbers. If true, this certainly changes the dynamic of the race, with Biden and Sanders no longer a clear top two, resulting in a more wide open field. Still, before we get into the substance of the debates, let’s discuss just how wide open the field is. How many of these candidates could actually win the Democratic nomination? Ok, so if it’s clear that Warren and Harris did well, why do you think that is? What stood out about their performances? Who else caught your eye in these first debates? In the HuffPost/YouGov poll, Julian Castro, Cory Booker and Pete Buttigieg also did well. Did we see anything from either of those three that suggests an ability to make a leap as a more serious contender? FiveThirtyEight had an interesting breakdown of the debate in five charts. Is There Any Real Daylight Between The Candidates on Policy? Obviously, there were a ton of issues covered over the two nights…What stood out to you? Vox has a good breakdown from the left of who won/lost on policy. Most of the partisan Republicans watching will likely view the real winner of the debates as President Trump, arguing that the policy conversation was far to the left of the average American voter, and that Vice President Biden’s chances of securing the nomination took a hit after performance. Is there truth to that? How much did Vice President Biden really hurt his chances of winning the nomination? Did these debates change your perception of which candidates could defeat President Trump next November? What’s Next? The next debates, which will again feature two nights of ten candidates each, will take place in Detroit on July 30 and 31. For those debates, the qualification thresholds remain the same: Candidates must register at least 1% support in three DNC-approved polls or receive donations from 65,000 people including a minimum of 200 in at least 20 states. One candidate who did not qualify for the first round of debates has already qualified for the second round: Montana Governor Steve Bullock. However, because the DNC has capped the number of candidates on stage at 20, a series of tiebreakers will be used to determine who gets left off the stage. The bar to qualify gets significantly higher for the September debates, with at least 2% support needed in three DNC-approved polls, and 130,000 individual donors. That means that currently the only locks for the fall debates are Biden, Harris, Warren, Sanders, and Buttigieg, leaving candidates like Booker and O’Rourke on the bubble. Looking Ahead to the 2020 Calendar The Iowa Caucuses will take place on Monday, February 3rd, followed by the New Hampshire Primary on Tuesday the 11th. Harry Enten at CNN highlights the importance of Iowa and New Hampshire: No one has won a major party nomination since 1972 without coming in the top two in either Iowa or New Hampshire. And a strong showing in both states can turn a wide-open race into a blowout (see: John Kerry in 2004). The Nevada Caucuses take place on Saturday February 22nd, and the South Carolina Primary on Saturday the 29th. Super Tuesday, when Colorado will vote along with a significant portion of the country – including California and Texas – is Tuesday, March 3rd.
