So here in Nassau County, there has been quite a public back-and-forth between Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman, and the minority Democratic caucus in the County Legislature. Mr. Blakeman needs at least one Democrat to sign on to help fund his 428 million dollar plan toward improvements to roads, parks and police equipment.  Democrats want a promise that a certain percentage of the funds will be allocated specifically to Democratic districts, which they say are funds that Blakeman has denied.  To learn more, we have invited Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, a Democrat from Glen Cove, and the Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader, to tell us what has happened and what needs to happen in order for the Democrats to give the County Executive the signature he wants.  A similar invitation has been sent to Mr. Blakeman's office as well, and has not yet been accepted.

And then, Sam is joined by David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect and co-host of the Organized Money podcast, to discuss the prospects of the Democratic Party going into 2025 and beyond. First, Sam runs through updates on the GOP's continuing resolution, the Matt Gaetz ethics report, the Fed's rate cuts, Senate judicial confirmation, Lina Khan's FTC, Luigi Mangione, Palestinians' and Palestinian-Americans' suit against the State Department, Trump's legal woes, Amazon labor action, and the US' TikTok ban, also expanding on the GOP infighting around the continuing resolution and Mike Johnson's message to unelected billionaire bureaucrats Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Len Berman and Michael Riedel are joined by Joe Borelli about the state of New York City amid City Hall turmoil. Joe also talks about what the people that he represents in Staten Island have asked for more than anything.

Yvette Valdes-Smith knows firsthand how spiraling housing costs have made Beacon unaffordable to many. Yvette and her husband rented in Beacon for years, but moved to Fishkill when they realized they couldn't afford to buy a home here.  “We shouldn't have to struggle with paying our utility bills, our rent and our mortgages,” she says in our interview. “Affordability is critical to me and to pretty much every voter I've spoken to. And housing is a huge issue. It's going to require us not being NIMBY about things. We have to increase housing stock.”   Raised in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, Yvette went to college in New York, became a public school teacher and started a family before winning a seat on the Dutchess County Legislature, where she is Minority Leader. Now she's running for NY State Senate District 39 on the Democratic ticket.  In addition to housing affordability, her campaign is focused on issues like abortion rights, gender-affirming care, gun safety and youth services.  “We need more youth services,” she says. “I'm a mom. I've experienced the lack of childcare in this county. I've experienced youth programs closing or not being available. Think about summer camps, how they'll go online and they'll be gone in three seconds.”  But winning won't be easy. The current State Senator in the seat she's running for, Republican Rob Rolison, is a seasoned pol who won the spot by about 7,000 votes two years ago. In this episode, she talks about what it will take to beat him – including lots and lots of canvassing in purple and red areas of the district.  Senate District encompasses Beacon along with parts of Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties.
