The name Amityville literally translates to “friendship village”—but because of the tragic murders that took place in that Long Island community in 1974, and because of the bestselling book and blockbuster movie that followed, that name has taken on a definition with decidedly sinister connotations. Now, when people hear “Amityville,” they think “horror.” But is that association warranted? Was the house at 112 Ocean Avenue truly a nexus of demonic activity? Or was it all just a brilliant hoax cooked up by George and Kathy Lutz to capitalize on a tragedy? Listen in as we take a deep dive into the facts, fiction, and mythology surrounding the Amityville Horror.Links:The Real Amityville Horror (documentary)That's Incredible! Movin' On Month continues and in typical, morbid Christopher and Eric fashion your hosts are celebrating with a special edition of True Crime TV Club that focuses on one of the most famous haunted house stories in American history. Who was the biggest victim of the Amityville Horror story? The beleaguered couple who claimed they were run out of their new home by demonic spirits? Or the young children caught in the crossfire of what many believe to be a high flown hoax? Your hosts tackle the unpleasant truths, possible lies and disturbing revelations in the documentary film, MY AMITYVILLE HORROR. And speaking of demons, beleaguered critic-at-large Jordan Ampersand is scheduled to make a visit too with interviews, insights and the results of his “State of the Gay Union” survey.

Filmmakers are often inspired by true events, but THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) and THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (1976) are advertised to be dreadfully close to the gruesome tales they're based on. What ethical obligation does the storyteller have when adapting real life horror? What justifies the art? And is any of this even moral? We go deep into the paranormal conspiracy of the Lutz family with The Amityville Horror directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring Margot Kidder and James Brolin. Then chat the sensationalized The Town That Dreaded Sundown, directed by Charles B. Pierce, which is based on the tragic Texarkana Moonlight Murders committed by a serial killer. We also touch on the Conjuring favorites Ed and Lorraine Warren in anticipation for the Conjuring 4 releasing this week. CONTENT WARNING: Abuse. Best friends Allie and Jenna Junior went on a detailed journey to cover America's Haunted House. Together, they read the original, marching-band infested hit novel The Amityville Horror. They also subjected themselves to watch its first film adaptation in all its fly-covered glory. Then, they finished their trilogy off with the documentary, if that word can be used to accurately describe such a bizarre cinematic experience, My Amityville Horror. There's demon pigs, haunted hot dogs, a vagina candle seance and more in our fifteenth episode and we hope that listening to it doesn't give you ghostly diarrhea. Note: We have an audio glitch in our end theme music. No clue what's happened in there, but the logical answer is probably ghosts.

"Spooky Southcoast" for April 13, 2013. We're joined by Eric Walter, the director of "My Amityville Horror." The documentary focuses on Daniel Lutz, one of the children depicted in the book and films, and tells his story. We talk about how the true Amityville Horror wasn't just the paranormal activity, but the way the Lutz children suffered in the years following the story.
On our 10th episode Dave (@thehumanimdb), New Jersey Nick (@newjerseynick) and Mike (@theflickist) tackle the documentary, My Amityville Horror. The film discusses the real Amityville experience through the eyes of an adult Michael Lutz. We go deep into the Amityville mythology and the paranormal in our best Side Effect discussion to date. Give this one a listen or "For God's Sake, Get Out!"
Welcome to NWP at the Movies! This week, the pantsless ones are joined by film critic, actor, artist, and all around good dude, John Gholson. Movies are the topic of the day, but as always we begin with what we’ve been playing and listener mail. This week, we talk about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Patrick’s intro to iOS games, XCOM, and Julian’s existential gaming crisis. John attended the Fantastic Fest movie festival in Austin recently. This particular film fest focuses on quirky horror, action, and sci-fi movies, and John clues us in on Dredd, Cloud Atlas, and My Amityville Horror among others. We get deep into recent films as well, such as Argo and Seven Psycopaths, along with Rob’s recent trip to the Hamptons International Film Festival. We close out this episode talking about movies based on video games. Yeah, they all kind of suck, but there’s some fun to be had, as well. Enjoy Rob and John as they sit as polar opposites on nearly every movie! Thrill to Rob condemning Patrick and Julian’s favorite gaming flicks! Try not to fall asleep as we talk for far too long about the Resident Evil films! We hope you enjoyed this movie-centric episode. Join us in two weeks for our Halloween spectacular. Tell us your favorite scary games on our Facebook fan page and we’ll work them into the show. Featured Music: Hans Zimmer- Theme from The Critic Brendan Small- Jazz Fight Tomoyasu Hotei- Battle Without Honor or Humanity Utah Saints- Utah Saints Take on the Theme From Mortal Kombat
