Today on Women's Magazine magazine we will preview two exciting new lesbian documentaries playing at SF' Frameline film festival the preeminent LGBTQAI film festival, which is the largest in the world and runs from June 14th to July 2nd. First we talk to Madeleine Lim about her new documentary Jewelle: A Just Vision about the powerful and extraordinarily talented visionary writer, activist, and community-builder Jewelle Gomez who will also be joining us. Not limited to her vanguard work The Gilda Stories, Jewelle's been at the foreground of myriad culture and movement spaces since the 1960s. Through humorous and thoughtful interviews with Jewelle and a group of friends and collaborators (including Dorothy Allison, Cheryl Clarke, and Ajuan Mance), this doc by Madeleine Lim radiates with the warmth and sharp intelligence of a prolific Black and Native femme lesbian feminist who's an enduring force across LGBTQ+ organizations and communities, as it explores the lineage that has shaped and been shaped by Jewelle. And then we talk to Lisa Marie Evans, co-director of the new documentary “In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction.” Narrated by LGBTQ+ historian Lillian Faderman and illuminated through interviews with trailblazers like Jewelle Gomez (The Gilda Stories), Dorothy Allison (Bastard Out of Carolina), and Sarah Waters (Fingersmith), In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction charts a literary journey from post-war lesbian pulp to modern bestsellers. Charting the changing socio-political landscapes that encouraged an evolution of the genre In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction pays loving tribute to this evolution of lesbian and queer fiction, told through a lens of broader American history. And lastly we will talk to Allegra Madsen the director of programming at Frameline about the history of the film festival and other lesbian highlights at the film festival. Here is a talk from Dorothy Allison from the 2012 Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Allison's writing focuses on class struggle, sexual abuse, child abuse, feminism and lesbianism. She has won a number of awards for her writing, including several Lambda Literary Awards. Her first novel Bastard Out of Carolina was published in 1992 to great acclaim, becoming a best-seller. It was later adapted as a film of the same name, directed by Anjelica Huston for TNT. The book and film both generated controversy because of the graphic content, and the TV film was aired on Showtime rather than TNT. The Canadian Maritime Film Classification Board initially banned distribution of the film in Canada, but it was reversed on appeal. In November 1997, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court affirmed a State Board of Education decision to ban the book in public high schools because of its graphic content.
Paper Cuts LIVE! Episode 54 HERE IN THE DARK from Shotgun Honey Books is the debut short story collection from award winning author Meagan Lucas! Join us for the exclusive cover reveal and author chat. We will also be joined by special guest, author Laurel Hightower. "HERE IN THE DARK, the first collection from award-winning author Meagan Lucas, is a gritty genre blending wallop of short stories, set mostly in Southern Appalachia, that explore the female experience of lawlessness. In the tradition of Dorothy Allison and Bonnie Jo Campbell, Lucas tackles, with unsettling honesty: poverty, addiction, motherhood, and social justice in an increasingly troubled cultural climate. These are character-driven stories about crime, but less a who-done-it mystery and more a meditation on how the vulnerable navigate a world devoid of true justice. Unflinching in its gaze, HERE IN THE DARK is an ambitious collection from a bold and empathetic storyteller. Perceptive, intimate, and brave, these sixteen stories encompass shame and forgiveness, loss and redemption, oppression and revolution, and signal a new way of thinking about power and trauma. In "Voluntary Action," a sheriff's deputy witnesses the overdose of a high school friend in her custody. In "Buttons," a little girl, bullied by the neighbor boy, gets her revenge with a needle and thread. In "Sitting Ducks," a hurricane bears down on mothers, daughters, and sisters in an un-evacuated women's prison. In "Asylum" an immigrant woman, suffering a terrible loss, sees ghosts in the hotel and houses that she cleans. In "Hell, or High Water" a young woman with Stockholm syndrome is abandoned by her kidnapper deep in the woods of Western North Carolina. And in "Here in the Dark," a newly clean addict is given the opportunity to start over with her son if only she'll snitch on her former lover and pimp, but discovers, of course, it's not that simple. Blending Lucas' musical prose with high-tension stakes, and resonant characters, HERE IN THE DARK is a collection not to be missed." Visit us at: https://www.papercutslive.com

Psychics! Visions! Questionable methods of investigation! Join Benton and Anna as they explore the more esoteric ways of solving a case. First, Anna gives a rundown on the ways a police department may enlist the help of a psychic, and how good the results typically are, and Benton relays the murder of Andre Daigle, solved with the help of a psychic. Then, Anna goes over the murders of John DeMars and Susan Jacobson, solved with the help of the psychic, Dorothy Allison. Finally, a classic episode of Forensic Files is in order, profiling the murder of Cindy Allinger. Our TV doc this week is Season 13: Episode 19 of Forensic Files, "Seedy Intentions".
Last week, we investigated whether psychic abilities were legit and now we run through the real people who solve real crimes using...real powers? Dorothy Allison, Nancy Weber, and other purported psychics have famously helped crack high profile cases with no one able to explain how. Were they just really good guessers? Was the show Psych more of a documentary program? Or were these women really tapping into a deeper level of human potential? There's actually a good chance Baba Vanga predicted we'd do this episode.

None of us saw this coming, but this week we decided to cover crimes that were solved through the help of psychics. Dana covers the murder of Susan Jacobson. The case had gone cold and psychic Dorothy Allison got a vision that changed everything. Nydia tells us of the murder of Melanie Uribe and how an unassuming aerospace worker by the name of Etta Smith suddenly gets a vision that not only solves the crime but also puts her on the top the list of suspects. Cindy shares some psychic encounters that will have you believing. For dinner this week, Cindy cooked up a delicious baked ziti. For dessert, she made some amazing lemon cheesecake bars from a recipe found on shugarysweets.com. The wine this week was a custom made Vena Cabernet Sauvignon made by Cindy's brother in law.
Dorothy Allison treated the participants of the 2011 Summer Workshop to a spirited discussion of how characters should speak on the page. Omgosh YESSSS!!!! Nurtured. is BACK!!It took me a bit longer to get back here than anticipated and honestly, I feel a bit like one of those beautifully scraggly bears after they come out of hibernation. I feel awkward at the mic, am experiencing being really outside of myself during interviews, and am having just all-around thoughts of “wtf am I even doing”???!!! Thankfully we get to kick off season two with this sweet little episode that I recorded back in November with a soul who means a lot to me so it feels like the kindest way to get back into the swing of things.I feel truly honoured to share with all of you, the conversation I had with the incredible Max Backer on all things enneagram. Perhaps this work is second nature to you, or perhaps you’ve stopped reading this and are googling what on earth enneagram is…either way…this episode is a must for anyone wanting to dive a little deeper into the personality and to add a new tool to their ever expanding tool kit.Max Backer is a former professor and performance poet from Ithaca NY and above all, a type 4 to the bitter end. They were a 2012 Lambda Fellow in Poetry under Jewelle Gomez and Dorothy Allison and most recently delivered a Ted Talk entitled: no one has imagined us: the gender non-binary experience. As the Experience Manager for Tempest, an online recovery platform, they use non-traditional sobriety frameworks such as the enneagram and birth charts to help folks find their way home.So welcome back! Sooooo excited we’re starting another season and most of all, I’m thankful that you’re back here with me
Dorothy Allison is a self-described "feminist, working class storyteller, Southern expatriate, and sometime poet." The author of "Bastard Out of Carolina," she gave the keynote at the 2019 Appalachian Writers' Workshop at the Hindman Settlement School in Knott County, KY. Our own Rachel Garringer was there to capture her thoughts on writing, identity, class, memory and using language as a weapon. We’ll hear Kentucky writer Silas House introduce her. Listen in for an hour of humor, brilliance, and fire from an iconic Southern writer.

Dorothy Allison grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, the first child of a fifteen-year-old unwed mother who worked as a waitress. Now living in Northern California with her partner Alix and her teenage son, Wolf Michael, she describes herself as a feminist, a working class story teller, a Southern expatriate, a sometime poet and a happily born-again Californian. The first member of her family to graduate from high school, Allison attended Florida Presbyterian college on a National Merit Scholarship and studied anthropology at the New School for Social Research. An award winning editor for Quest, Conditions, and Outlook—early feminist and Lesbian & Gay journals, Allison's chapbook of poetry, The Women Who Hate Me, was published with Long Haul Press in 1983. Her short story collection, Trash (1988) was published by Firebrand Books. Trash won two Lambda Literary Awards and the American Library Association Prize for Lesbian and Gay Writing. Allison says that the early Feminist movement changed her life. "It was like opening your eyes under water. It hurt, but suddenly everything that had been dark and mysterious became visible and open to change." However, she admits, she would never have begun to publish her stories if she hadn't gotten over her prejudices, and started talking to her mother and sisters again. Allison received mainstream recognition with her novel Bastard Out of Carolina, (1992) a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award. The novel won the Ferro Grumley prize, an ALA Award for Lesbian and Gay Writing, became a best seller, and an award-winning movie. It has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Cavedweller (1998) became a national bestseller, NY Times Notable book of the year, finalist for the Lillian Smith prize, and an ALA prize winner. Adapted for the stage by Kate Moira Ryan, the play was directed by Michael Greif, and featured music by Hedwig composer, Stephen Trask. In 2003, Lisa Cholendenko directed a movie version featuring Krya Sedwick. I spoke with Dorothy recently as part of my college's "Mouths of Others" creative arts speakers series. She is full of fire and story and looks right through you in that simple, razor sharp way that only Southerns can. I think you will dig this conversation. I know her writing will undo you. Transformation in a lightning bolt, presented for your enjoyment.

What makes a writer feminist, and what makes feminists writers? Gayle Greene, author of The Poetics of Change: The Fiction of Doris Lessing discusses one of the iconic women writers of the twentieth century, who sometimes rejected the label of feminist, but inspired a generation of feminist readers and writers. And authors Dorothy Allison and Gail Tsukiyama discuss their writing process and the importance of a nurturing community of women writers, as well as the “radical hospitality” provided by Hedgebrook , a unique writer's retreat for women.
