What's up, folks? This week on the podcast, I'm flying solo. So, for this episode, I will explore The Amityville Horror in our Remake vs. Original series, comparing the eerie 1979 classic to its intense 2005 remake. We begin with the real-life horror behind 112 Ocean Avenue before analyzing the original film's slow-burn psychological terror and the remake's modern, action-driven scares. From George Lutz's descent into madness to the film's use of special effects, I debate which version is scarier and holds up best today and why none of that matters anyway. So tune in for the final verdict, share your thoughts, and stay connected for what's next. The Amityville Horror films, released in 1979 and 2005, depict one of horror's most infamous haunted house stories. The 1979 film takes a slow-burning, psychological approach, becoming a classic in the haunted house subgenre, while the 2005 remake modernizes the story with a faster pace, intense visuals, and a darker portrayal of George Lutz's descent into madness. Despite their stylistic differences, both films continue to intrigue audiences and spark debate over the real events behind the legend. Thank you, everyone, for your support. We're open to all conversations, suggestions, topics, and criticisms.
I know this movie didn't get the best score from critics but I really don't think the critics were paying attention to the main thing in this film... which was Ryan Reynolds abs and dimples of venus(google it). That's right we watched a millennial classic which includes only the best jump scares, topless scenes and dog murder...AND THANK YOU FOR LISTENINGPLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/fromdusktilldonpodcast?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y

So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? Whatever your take is on this misbegotten footnote in the annals of horror history, we had a blast discussing it with Gretchen McNeil, back for her 5th episode, and the second in our Amityville mini-exploration. On November 13th 1974, Ronald DeFeo shot his family dead in Amityville, New York. Not long after he was convicted of the killings, the Lutz family moved into the DeFeos' former home. They did not stay long. After just 28 days, they fled, claiming to have been driven out by paranormal activity. The Lutz family's experience formed the basis of The Amityville Horror. Released in 1979, it went on to spawn a seemingly endless number of sequels, prequels, and derivatives: over 40 to date. In his docu-series, Amityville: An Origin Story, director Jack Riccobono explores what happened to both the DeFeo and Lutz families. Matthew Sherwood discovers in conversation with Jack that what took place did not happen in isolation. As Jack says, the 1970s was a dark time in America. There was fear in the air, abuse behind closed doors, an increase in drug addiction, and strange new belief systems sprouting up. Jack takes Matthew through the mystery of the silent rifle used in the murders, and the question of why the Lutz family moved into the DeFeo home: did they do it for commercial gain? Was it a hoax? He and Matthew look at the question marks over George Lutz's character as well as George's role in the perpetuation of the Amityville story: he never stopped pushing it. Greed, family dysfunction, sensationalism, the truth vs media misrepresentation. The origin of the Amityville horror is much closer to us than we realise. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “I was drawn to this possibility of sort of this cross-genre exploration, and I really felt like there was something unique about this series...you had this true crime component, but then you also had this paranormal story, and then you had this sort of larger cultural landscape that we could explore.” – Jack Riccobono

The 1979 film "The Amityville Horror" is a horror movie directed by Stuart Rosenberg and based on a 1977 novel of the same name by Jay Anson. The film is loosely inspired by the alleged supernatural events that occurred in a house located at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, in 1974. These events were reported by the Lutz family, who claimed to have experienced a series of disturbing and paranormal occurrences shortly after moving into the house. The film stars James Brolin as George Lutz and Margot Kidder as Kathy Lutz, a newlywed couple who move into the infamous house with Kathy's three children from a previous marriage. As they settle into their new home, they begin to experience a range of eerie and terrifying phenomena, including strange noises, unexplained odors, and disturbing visions. As the paranormal activity intensifies, George becomes increasingly aggressive and distant, and the family's well-being is put at risk. The movie builds tension through a combination of supernatural occurrences and psychological horror, as the Lutz family's sanity is tested by the malevolent forces they believe are haunting their home. It explores themes of family, possession, and the thin line between reality and the supernatural. "The Amityville Horror" was a commercial success upon its release, capitalizing on the popularity of supernatural horror films during that era. However, it received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its atmosphere and scares while others criticized its pacing and reliance on familiar horror tropes. The film's success led to a series of sequels, spin-offs, and remakes, but the original 1979 adaptation remains one of the most well-known renditions of the Amityville haunting story. It's worth noting that while the film is loosely based on real events, much of the story has been embellished and sensationalized for dramatic effect, and the actual veracity of the claims made by the Lutz family has been widely disputed. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100horrors/message

George lost his son, Tony, just weeks before his 25th birthday. Like many Gold Star families, George felt lost. The tremendous loss of his son had him asking many questions of not only himself, but our country. He wanted to create a national symbol of rememberance. Not just for his son, but for all sons and daughters, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, etc lost either in battle overseas or here at home to their demons. honorandremember.org Honor and Remember will be on hand at the CocaCola 600 this weekend in Charlotte, NC. On this edition of Parallax Views, filmmaker Jack Riccobono joins us to discuss his new MGM+ documentary miniseries Amityville: An Origin Story. Given the glut of Amityville movies, books, and documentaries that have come out through the years one could be forgiven for assuming Amityville: An Origin Story would be just another retread of the same old territory. After all, the Amityville name has now inspired such direct-to-video/streaming flicks as Amityville Cop, Amityville Moon, Amityville in Space, and, believe it or not, Amityville Vibrator. In that way many have come to view anything with the Amityville moniker to be a joke. Amityville: An Origin Story, however, manages to defy expectations and offer a fresh, even thought-provoking perspective on the infamous house on 112 Ocean Avenue by exploring how The Amityville Horror, from the brutal DeFeo family murders to the alleged haunting of the Lutz family and all the books and movies that followed, became a pop culture phenomena that's seared into the collective consciousness of America. Jack and I discuss many different facets of the docuseries including: - The culture of the 70s: rise of interest in occultism, mass institutional distrust due to the Vietnam War and Watergate, the popularity of horror movies like The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, and The Omen; how this all created the perfect storm for The Amityville Horror to make an impact on the zeitgeist - The brutal family annihilation murder of the DeFeo Family and its perpetrator Ronald DeFeo, Jr.; family dysfunction and family disintegration in the stories of both the DeFeo and the Lutz families; the lingering questions about possible organized crime/mob ties to the DeFeo Murders; the rare archival interviews of Ronald DeFeo, Jr. contained in Amityville: An Origin Story; discussion of Amityville II: The Possession, the cult horror movie based on the DeFeo murders; Amityville: An Origin Story's interview with Diane Franklin, who played Ronald DeFeo, Jr.'s sister Dawn DeFeo in Amityville II: The Possession; Amityville: An Origin Story's exclusive interview with Tommy Maher, a personal friend of Ronnie DeFeo, Jr. - The alleged haunting of the Lutz Family; paranormal investigator and famed ghost hunter Hans Holzer's thoughts on the Amityville House; Christopher Quaratino, son of Kathy Lutz, and the secrets of his stepfather George Lutz; why the documentary goes beyond asking the old question of whether the Amityville Haunting was "real" or a "hoax"; The Amityville Horror and the birth of the "Based on a True Story" marketing; demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, now famous for being the basis of the hit The Conjuring movie franchise, and their investigation of the Amityville House; Amityville: An Origin Story's interview with Lutz family friend Carol Soviero - The role famed filmmaker John Carpenter, director of the suspenseful horror classic Halloween (1978), plays in Amityville: An Origin Story - The Amityville House as a character in an of itself; Amityville: An Origin Story's exploration of the idea of home, real estate, and the warping of the American dream through the funhouse mirror of the Amityville story; the difficulty of living in the Amityville house today due to tourists and the general cultural baggage the house carries; the movie's tagline "For God's Sake, Get Out!" and the infamous Eddie Murphy about The Amityville Horror - The role of greed and profiteering in the perpetuation of Amityville saga in popular culture - The Amityville Horror and the ancient Indian burial ground trope in horror as it relates to both settler-colonial guilt and bigotry against Native Americans - The Amityville Horror in relation to conversations about the concept of a "post-truth" era; parallels between the 70s and today and the continued cultural resonance that the Amityville saga carries even now - The Amityville saga as a microcosm of the idea that there's "no new stories to be told" - Amityville: An Origin Story as part true crime documentary, part paranormal documentary recounting the Lutz Family's 28 days in the 112 Ocean Avenue house, part investigative journalism, and part cultural history documentary exploring The Amityville Horror's significance to cinema - And much, much more!

The name Amityville literally translates to “friendship village”—but because of the tragic murders that took place in that Long Island community in 1974, and because of the bestselling book and blockbuster movie that followed, that name has taken on a definition with decidedly sinister connotations. Now, when people hear “Amityville,” they think “horror.” But is that association warranted? Was the house at 112 Ocean Avenue truly a nexus of demonic activity? Or was it all just a brilliant hoax cooked up by George and Kathy Lutz to capitalize on a tragedy? Despite full disclosure by the real estate agent of the house's history, George and Kathy buy the house. George says, "Houses don't have memories," but they turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house. But satanic forces in the place cause him to become blind and make him very sick. With the help of another priest Father Bolen and a police detective, George and Kathy face the fears of the house, but not knowing the forces are planning to possess George and then the children.Real-life Story - Thirty miles outside of New York City, nestled in the Long Island town of Amityville, stands the house forever linked to the Amityville Horror phenomenon. On November 13, 1974, the estate was the scene of mass murder. Using a .35 Marlin rifle, 23-year-old Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family while they were asleep, which included his parents and four siblings.Crazy Movie Trivia - James Brolin was hesitant when he was first offered the role of George Lutz. He was told that there was no script and that he must obtain a copy of Jay Anson's novel and read it as soon as possible. Brolin started the book one evening at seven o'clock and was still reading at two o'clock in the morning. He had hung a pair of his pants up in the room earlier and at a really "tense" part in the book, the pants fell down from wherever they had been hanging. Brolin jumped out of his chair, nearly crashing his head into the ceiling. Then, Brolin said, "There's something to this story." He agreed to do the movie. For years rumors have circulated that the movie was to be filmed in the actual house in Amityville, NY, but the production team was too frightened to film inside the house. The reality is the town of Amityville denied American International Pictures permission to film any scenes whatsoever in Amityville in an attempt to distance themselves from any publicity. Therefore, AIP found a two-story Dutch-Colonial home in Toms River, NJ, in which to film the exteriors. A third-floor facade was added, along with the crescent moon windows on both sides of the house. Almost all interior scenes were filmed at MGM studios in Culver City, CA. A few interior scenes were filmed inside the actual Toms River house, including the scene when George returns from the boathouse in the middle of the night, then walks onto the sun porch to light a cigarette. In that scene, you can see there's no wallpaper and no door in the living room, whereas on the soundstage the living room has wallpaper and a door near the bookshelf.Cinematographer Fred J. Koenekamp admitted to having a hard time filming the scenes with the flies, as he claimed to be scared of insects. He says that whenever he was to film a scene with a close-up facial shot of a fly right in the camera, he would look away or close his eyes and hope for a good shot. He also lost nearly 30 pounds because he refused to eat, saying the flies made him lose his appetite. In hopes of creating more publicity for the film, the studio would concoct stories of "weird" occurrences on the set of the film. The basement featured in this movie, is shown to be a dark and creepy dungeon like room. In reality, the real home in Amityville has a finished basement that was used as a rec room when the DeFeo family lived in the home. The other portion of the basement is used as a laundry room and storage area. The original house also had a swimming pool at one time, until a newer set of owners had it filled in.The Lutz family went on to live a relatively normal life free of paranormal activity after escaping the house, but their peace was short-lived. George and Kathy Lutz divorced in the late 1980s. George died of heart disease on 8 May 2006, in Clark County, Nevada, and Kathy died of emphysema on 17 August 2004, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three children--Daniel, Christopher, and Missy--are adults and remain out of the public eye. Their names were changed for the film. The film never makes it clear what was happening to Carolyn once she finally saw the red room in the basement of the house. It was commonly believed among fans and viewers that she was experiencing possession. Helen Shaver, who plays Carolyn, is often asked the question and answers that she wasn't experiencing a demonic possession, but rather a sensory overload. Carolyn is a clairvoyant, and sensitive to the supernatural, so she was experiencing the pain, torture, and sadness of all the souls trapped in hell being thrown at her all at once, as the red room is said to be the entrance to hell. She covered her ears in the scene because she could hear the screams of agony belonging to all the punished souls in hell, causing her a sensory overload.Leave a rating/review if you enjoyed this episode. In the early morning of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed his mother, father, two sisters and two brothers in the family home at 112 Ocean Avenue. DeFeo claimed that he heard voices telling him to do it. All the victims were shot in their beds and were found laying face down. In November 1975, DeFeo was found guilty of six counts of second degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years to life for each one. The next month, George Lutz and his family purchased the home for $80,000 and moved in. The Lutz family began to experience paranormal activities that became so severe, the family fled after just 28 days......... The Lutzes story was the inspiration for a book titled "The Amityville Horror", which was later turned into a horror movie in 1979.
Spooky season is here! We first cover the story of the Amityville horror house. The story begins in 1974 when 23-year-old Ronald Jr. crept into the family home and shot his parents and all four of his siblings while they were asleep in their beds. A month after Ronald Jr. was convicted, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the home with their three young children. Only 28 days later they moved out, claiming the house was haunted. Then we cover all the different crimes that have taken place in haunted house attractions over the years: Everything from accidental hangings to stabbings to murder.Sources:https://allthatsinteresting.com/amityville-horror-househttps://nypost.com/article/amityville-horror-house-real-story/https://www.topic.com/the-true-twisted-story-of-amityville-horrorhttps://www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/bad-behavior/boo-actual-crimes-committed-in-haunted-house-attractions https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/halloween-hanging/ https://www.ranker.com/list/people-died-halloween-attractions/harrison-tenpas https://time.com/3548116/scary-story-halloween-1957/ https://www.wnep.com/article/news/local/bradford-county/man-stabbed-at-haunted-house-by-friend-who-thought-knife-was-a-prop/523-a38d0e68-e235-47e0-9652-27bbd94afff1 https://www.ibtimes.co.in/halloween-hoax-busted-man-walks-into-haunted-house-chainsaw-murders-7-people-fake-video-611163 https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2019/10/24/haunted-houses-require-waiver-insurance-drug-test/4082035002/ https://www.ladbible.com/news/news-mckamey-manor-the-most-terrifying-experience-in-the-world-20201028 Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/badsign)
In this episode, Anne Marie talks to Amanda Woods, cohost of Encounters: A Paranormal Experience. You guessed it, a podcast about the paranormal. Amanda chose to talk about a haunting in the United States that began a movie franchise, but more than that, it is the haunting that helped to launch the paranormal into the mainstream. Whether you believe in ghosts or not this episode has some fun facts and campfire-worthy stories that may stray off course, but will ultimately lead back to the spooky factor. The Encounters: A Paranormal Experience is a Paranormal / Supernatural discussion between Amanda and Dakota who seek to unravel the unexplained and unknown. Episode 176: On the night of November 13, 1974, In the sleepy community of Amityville on the coast of Long Island, New York, a 23-year-old man named Ronald (Butch) DeFeo Jr. came running into a local bar. He was distraught and claiming his whole family, his mother and father and 4 siblings, had been murdered in their home, a large Dutch Colonial house located at 112 Ocean Avenue. However, it was later determined it was Butch himself who'd annihilated his family. A year later, Butch was convicted on six counts of second-degree murder and received an equal number of sentences of 25 years to life in prison for slaughtering his family as they slept. A month after Butch DeFeo's conviction, the Lutz family, Kathy, George and their three kids moved into the property having purchased it for a steal, $80,000. But, after only 28 days in the house, the Lutz family fled. They claimed they'd been chased out by relentless psychic torture inflicted on them by some unseen presence; they thought demonic, who'd made life in the house impossible. A 1977 book on the case by author Jay Anson titled The Amityville Horror, and subsequent film in 1979 introduced the story to an international audience and has become one of the most well-known, most covered and at the same time, controversial tales of hauntings and demonic possession in history. It's remake/reboot month on Cheer and Loathing. In honor of Father's Day, we discuss two modern remakes revolving around father figures. In "The Amityville Horror", George Lutz becomes a new dad to three kids when he marries a beautiful widow. But winning their approval becomes a hell of a lot harder when the family's new home comes complete with demonic possession, turning George into a very scary (but very sexy) psychopath. In "The Omen", a well-connected U.S. ambassador gets offered a handy replacement baby when his son is stillborn. Seems like a great deal, until he discovers he's raising the spawn of Satan. Are these remakes of horror royalty hellacious...or a hell of a good time? Tune in to find out!

At 3 am on November 13, 1974, six members of the DeFeo family were found shot in their beds. No drugs were found in their systems. The coroner said they hadn't been moved from their beds. No silencer was used and the neighbors didn't hear any gunshots. Why did they not run? A year later, the Lutz family moved into their dream home where this massacre occurred only to report strange things that happened, causing them to flee in the middle of the night only 27 days after moving in. In this episode Amanda and Lauren discuss the haunting of the Lutz family in Amityville and the numerological significance of the number four
Inspired by 9/11 to protect his country, Tony Lutz left his successful career and beautiful wife and children to join the army. On patrol in Iraq, Corporal Lutz was killed by a sniper. When his dad, George Lutz, got the devastating news and tried to begin to heal by talking with other Gold Star families, he found that what was most important to them was for their loved ones' sacrifice to never be forgotten. Today, George tells us the story of how his son was inspired to to make a difference, and about how George, himself, was inspired to found Honor and Remember, a non-profit organization that leaves a legacy in the form of a national symbol: the Honor and Remember flag. He's determined to have this flag flown on every flagpole in America. So far, 26 states have adopted it and there are bills before Congress for national adoption of the flag. His organization has presented 4,000 handmade personalized flags to families and has a long waiting list. Hear his chilling and important story.
2002-12-27 - Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell - Amityville Horror Case - George Lutz
On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we give you a two-fer and talk both true crime and the most (in)famous haunting in America. That's right, it's the case known as the Amityville Horror. What started as a truly mysterious mass murder in the iconic house in Amityville evolved into a world-famous ghost story that spawned books, horror films, documentaries, and scarred the childhoods of countless kids growing up in the 1970s. (I'm looking at you "get ouuuuut" ghost!) So, where does this multifaceted story begin? With the murder of six members of the DeFeo family in November of 1974. It was a middle-class family living under an abusive drunk, the father Robert DeFeo Sr. Their son, Robert Jr., snapped and pulled a gun on his father to stop the beatings, and his parents rewarded him with gifts and a job at the family car lot. One day, he left work early (as he often did) and talked mad smack about his family. The next day at 6:30 AM, he burst back into the bar claiming his parents might have been shot. Witnesses followed him to find all six members of his family shot in their beds face down. This is where the mystery builds. No neighbors heard gunshots. There was no silencer, no sign of struggle, no drugs in their systems, and ultimately no motive for the killing of anyone other than the abusive dad. This case was famous, and as a result, the house wasn't worth much. Enter the Lutz family. They bought the murder scene and moved in, but sold the place only 28 days later. Why? Well, it was crazy haunted. There was a room full of flies, green ectoplasm leaking from the doors, a pig with flowing red eyes, and imaginary friend/ghost that their son could see, a demon boy photo, and a ghost who screamed "Get Out" at a priest. Their story spawned a book and cult film, and the house was never the same again. But all may not be as it seemed, and a lot of doubt has been raised about the story of the haunting? So, who said the Lutz family was making it all up? Did they concoct the story over a bottle of wine in an attempt to make some money? Why did they move in only 28 days? What did the children claim happened to them that wasn't in the movies? Was the house on an anceint indian mad house, and did George Lutz mess with occult powers in his garage? How does Drunk Brad's theory legitimately explain the strange DeFeo murders? Listen, laugh, learn. The Lutz family claims that their lives were forever changed by what they experienced in their Amityville home. George and Kathy Lutz moved into the home just a year after the DeFeo murders took place. Their accounts were documented in the book The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson and that book served as the inspiration for many movies. In this episode, Skye is once again joined by Carrie from Sip and Shine Podcast to discuss the claims from the book and whether or not these claims are real. Skye and Carrie also tell a few personal experiences with ghosts and haunted houses.Support the show (http://patreon.com/hmct)

“The Horror BEFORE Amityville” and 4 More True Terrifying Stories! #WeirdDarkness*Advertise on Weird Darkness; visit http://www.bgadgroup.com or call 770-874-3200.*The iconic Dutch Colonial style building at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, is best known today for the extraordinary account of a haunting at the house in 1976. The Amityville Horror, as it was soon known, became one of the most famous incidents of paranormal activity ever recorded. It would inspire a book and a successful series of Hollywood films. The account of the young Lutz family being tormented by demonic pigs, plagues of flies and green slime oozing from the walls terrified readers and moviegoers, all the more so because it was labelled as a true story. One surprisingly little-known fact about the Amityville Horror is that it was an admitted hoax. George Lutz and his wife Kathy invented the haunting with the help of lawyer and literary agent William Weber. But the paranormal version obscures a very real horror, one far more frightening and mysterious than the fanciful tales of poltergeists Hollywood gave the world. Because in the same house, less than 2 years earlier, one of the strangest and most baffling mass murders in recent history occurred. And the true events may not be the story you are familiar with. IN THIS EPISODE: We’ve all heard of the Headless Horseman – but Sleepy Hollow's lesser-known ghost will terrify you all the more. (The Bronze Lady of Sleepy Hollow) *** Theodore Roosevelt was so tough, that during one of his speeches he was shot in the chest – but still kept going until his speech was over. And then there was Alice, his daughter – who may have been even tougher than Teddy! (A Bullet And a Voodoo Doll) *** An icy cold hand caresses a girl in the middle of the night. (A Comfort) *** For most people, spotting a UFO would be considered extremely unusual, but for two Ohio women, seeing a UFO was the least surprising part of their experience. (UFOs And Time Distortions) *** Was there another gunman in the notorious Amityville House murders? (The Defeo Family Massacre)EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS…Depressed? Perry Mason is the longest running lawyer show in American television history. Its original run lasted nine years and its success in both syndication and made-for-television movies confirm its impressive stamina. Mason's fans include lawyers and judges who were influenced by this series to enter their profession. The Mason character was created by mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner and delivered his first brief in the novel The Case of the Velvet Claws (1933). From 1934 to 1937 Warners produced six films featuring Mason. A radio series also based on Mason ran every weekday afternoon on CBS radio from 1944 to 1955 as a detective/soap opera. When the CBS television series was developed as an evening drama, the radio series was changed from Perry Mason to The Edge of Night and the cast renamed so as not to compete against the television series. This Episode: The Case of the Nervous Accomplice from Perry Mason aired October 5, 1957. Sybil Granger hires Perry to help her buy stock in her estranged husband's oil company on the sly. By this, Sybil hopes to force her husband's latest girlfriend, Roxy Howard, out of the company and his life altogether. Things get complicated when George Lutz enters the picture.
