How A Simple Blood Test May Save Your Life

Today's Takeaway with Florine Mark

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2022 19:05

With Dr. Michael Lutz, M.D., Urology Specialist   Did you know that the most common type of cancer is also one of the easiest to treat if diagnosed early enough? Prostate cancer is highly treatable and often curable in the early stages, but the key is early diagnosis. In the beginning stages of the disease, there might not be any signs or symptoms. That's why it's so important for men to have regular screenings; especially if they are high risk based on medical history. A simple blood test can lead to early detection.   My guest today is Dr. Michael Lutz. He is the President of the MIU Men's Health Foundation, a board-certified Urinary Specialist at William Beaumont Hospital, and partner with the Michigan Institute of Urology P.C. Dr. Lutz speaks with us about male urinary health, the different types of urinary conditions, and how they are treated. He shares suggestions on how men might reduce the risk of prostate cancer and how to stay proactive about their health.   What You'll Hear on This Episode:   Did Dr. Lutz's background influence his decision to become a urologist?   Has prostate cancer become more common in recent years? When is prostate screening appropriate? What are the early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer? What are the other tests besides blood tests to examine the prostate? Why are men so hesitant to get screened? Is a PSA test foolproof? What is the prostate's function? Who is most at risk of developing prostate cancer? What factors are really important for prostate health? What are the preferred treatments for prostate cancer? Which treatments have the best outcome? What are common urinary problems in both men and women? Is cranberry juice really effective for urinary tract infections? What is MIU Men's Health Foundation?   Quotes: “The annual amount of diagnoses of prostate cancer is about 190,000 cases in the United States.” — Dr. Lutz “Prostate cancer is truly a multifactorial disease.” — Dr. Lutz “That's what makes the disease so challenging because in most cases there are no signs or symptoms secondary to prostate cancer.” — Dr. Lutz Today's Takeaway: It's all too easy to avoid going to the doctor when you aren't experiencing symptoms, but a vitally important part of an annual medical exam for an adult male should include screening for the prostate cancer antigen. As scary as the thought of a cancer diagnosis may be, it doesn't have to lead to a worst-case scenario. Survival rates for men with prostate cancer have increased over the years thanks to better screenings and treatment. Remember that every single day is a gift, and we owe it to ourselves to be proactive about our health. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.”   Brought to You By: Gardner White Furniture   Mentioned in This Episode: Dr. Michael Lutz MIU Men's Health Foundation William Beaumont Hospital Michigan Institute of Urology

June is Men's Health Month, and usually, that means large in-person events to raise money and awareness.  In the case of the MIU Mens' Health Foundation, Dr. Michael Lutz and his team had to re-work three signature fundraising events.Cogs and Kegs will now be virtual, with $20 raised by bikers for every 20 miles they ride on their own, with an online leader board. Each $20 will cover the cost of a men's health screening this fall. Griffin Claw Brewing Company will be adding in gift cards as well.Typically, "Blue Monday" kicks off Men's Health Week.  This June 15th, instead of dressing the city of Detroit in blue a free event Downtown, the Foundation is asking people everywhere to wear blue and display it on social media with the hashtag #BlueMonday2020. The idea is to start a conversation about getting men healthy.Instead of taking place at the Detroit Zoo, this year's Run For The Ribbon 5K will be virtual on Father's Day, running close to home, wherever they would like.  Registrants can sign up online and download all materials from the raise, all in an effort to raise awareness for prostate cancer and other men's health issues.Statistically, men are far less likely than women to visit health care providers.  Dr. Lutz explains why many men go to the doctor not for prevention, but as a reaction.  A goal of the MIU Men's Health Foundation is to educate and persuade men to be more proactive about their health.Dr. Lutz previews this year's Ford Field event (link below) in September. It's a non-invasive health screening that helps men get checked out in all areas. This year, they are also hoping to add jobs resources in the wake of COVID-19.Finally, Dr. Lutz explains the areas of health that men need to check on as they enter each new decade of their lives, and he catches us up on some of the theories on why Coronavirus seems to affect men disproportionately.Resources:MIU Mens Health Foundation Website: https://www.miumenshealthfoundation.org/Cogs and Kegs: www.cogsandkegs.orgRun For The Ribbon 5k: www.MIURunfortheRibbon.orgBlue Monday: www.BlueMondayMensHealth.orgFord Field Men's Health Event: https://www.miumenshealthfoundation.org/mens-health-eventMichigan Motors Forward is produced by JAG in Detroit Podcasts in collaboration with Tanner Friedman Strategic Communications.https://jagindetroit.com/https://tannerfriedman.com/

White socks, board shorts, off-brand Speedo’s, lots and lots of slow motion and the hardest working college doctor around… this week we’re talking about David Decoteau’s LEECHES! Directed by Mr. Coteau and written by Fangoria’s Michael Gingold, this movie(?) stars Michael Lutz, Josh Henderson and Matt Twining as members of a college swim team getting sucked on by steroid-loving leeches. It is a doozy. We talk the movie and then play a game of ‘Decoteau Plot or Not’ where Mitch has to guess if a plot is a Christopher original or a genuine Decoteau film.

Seven weeks ago, we at Waypoint set out on a journey to untangle the lore of Kingdom Hearts. Partially, this was for our listeners who trust our expertise in all matters of the heart, but in honesty, it was mostly for ourselves. We, perhaps like you, had been plagued by questions about the Disney-Square collaboration. These were not novel questions, we know, and to series diehards they were simple: Why do so many people have the letter X in their names. Who was Xehanort, and what did it men to be norted? What's up with Mickey Mouse's shirt situation? How many different ways can you write out the sound "key"? What's more powerful, friendship or darkness? We learned, of course, that many of these questions were deeply connected. Especially the one about Mickey's naked chest. What we didn't anticipate, though, were all of the complex questions that went beyond lore and into the realm of philosophical inquiry: If there are bodies, souls, and hearts, where does the person reside? If some people are drawn inexplicably to the darkness, does that relate some terrible truth about their eternal character? Should we think of the unfractured world (before the First Keyblade War) as an uncorrupted, Rousseauian state of nature or as a violent, Hobbesian land of unrepressed violence? And speaking of repression, what the hell is up with memories? These are big questions, and we could not answer them alone. That is why Waypoint's intrepid lore master, Natalie Watson, and I followed the example of Sora and sought allies for this difficult journey. Which is why, joining us today are Waypoint columnist Cameron Kunzelman and games academic Michael Lutz, the co-hosts of Game Studies Study Buddies over on the Ranged Touch. Together, we dive into all of these questions and more. Though we left with even more questions to answer, the experience brought us clarity and provoked entirely new modes of understanding. We hope it does the same for you, and if you'd like to dig deeper on any of these topics, a good starting place is the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.Discussed: The Aura (Benjamin), Neoplatonism, Forms (Platonic and Aristotelian), Existentialism, Identity (Code Switching, Gender Theory, Queer Studies), Dialectics, Ontological Pluralism, Panpsychism, Kingdom Hearts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today, a startling new discovery: prodding the brain with light, a group of scientists got an unexpected surprise -- they were able to turn back on a part of the brain that had been shut down by Alzheimer’s disease. This new science is not a cure, and is far from a treatment, but it’s a finding so … simple, you won’t be able to shake it. Come join us for a lab visit, where we’ll meet some mice, stare at some light, and come face-to-face with the mystery of memory. We can promise you: by the end, you’ll never think the same way about Christmas lights again. This piece was reported by Molly Webster. It was produced by Annie McEwen, Matt Kielty, and Molly Webster, with help from Simon Adler. Special thanks to Ed Boyden, Cognito Therapeutics, Brad Dickerson, Karen Duff, Zaven Khachaturian, Michael Lutz, Kevin M. Spencer, and Peter Uhlhaas. Producer's note about the image: Those neon green things in the image are microglia, the brain’s immune cells, or, as we describe them in our episode, the janitor cells of the brain. Straight from MIT’s research files, this image shows microglia who have gotten light stimulation therapy (one can only hope in the flicker room). You can see their many, super-long tentacles, which would be used to feel out anything that didn’t belong in the brain. And then they’d eat it! On a spectacularly late episode of Built to Play, we talk about the things that keep us up at night, like taxes, lies, and harassment.* In out post-Halloween episode we decided to touch on real horror. While people are definitely scared of zombified spiders, it's not really the thing we're worried about. There are scarier things out there that we deal with on a day to day basis, some of us more than others. We all fear poverty and one day being stuck on the edge of financial precarity, especially those who have families to support. Then there's Gamergate targets, who have had to either fight off a horde of trolls willing to ruin and threaten their lives, or carefully monitor their statements online. Beyond those two, we all have a personal horror that we have difficulty communicating, whether it's a traumatic incident or a psychological ailment.  As game design tools have become more accessible to more people, we've seen more games that attempt to communicate personal experience.  Tools that replicate old adventure game engines and visual novels been particularly useful for this, like Twine, which being primarily text based has a fairly low bar to entry. On this episode we talk to four designers and writers who used these tools to communicate real fears to players:  David S Gallant on I Get This Call Every Day and the fear in financial precarity. Hear him starting 0:40 into our show. Michael Lutz on the Uncle Who Works for Nintendo and why he felt ethically bound to leave his players with hope. Hear him starting 28:30. Kaitlin Tremblay and JohnRathiganthan onLights Out, Please and the communicative power of interactive horror. Their segment starts at 41:40. Note Lights Out, Please has been nominated for five Canadian Video Game Awards!  Daniel and Arman also give a sample of our local multiplayer primer,to give you a preview of what we've been exploring on the site. It starts 14:10. You can find the full segment on our multiplayer hub.  This episode was made with the help of the Free Music Archive, with samples from WNYC's On the Media, and CBC Radio's As it Happens and Metro Morning. Our opening theme was "watashi" by Johnny_Ripper. We also used "Summer breeze let it out (johnny_ripper remix)" by smoking fox, "may light (remix by etc)" by SHOMOMOSE, "sister (johnny_ripper remix)" by Sea Oleena, "So This Is How It Ends" by Earsmack, "Oxygen Garden" by Chris Zabriskie, "Toy Cupboard" and "Everything is Broken or Intact" by Bleak House.  BUILT TO PLAY IS A PRODUCT OF THE SCOPE AT RYERSON RADIO STATION IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN TORONTO.
