But first, John gives an update on the current podcast schedule (as you may have noticed, we're doing these things more often again now!) and some brief thoughts on two major recent joshi shows: STARDOM's All Star Grand Queendom and Sendai Girls' Meiko Satomura Retirement Show. Then all three of them get into the main topics, starting with NOAH's big Sumo Hall show from May 3rd. They discuss NOAH's best attendance number at Ryogoku in six years, OZAWA's title reign and whether or not it should have ended here, whether the booking has been affected by Tetsuya Naito possibly coming in (and actually get breaking Naito news during the middle of recording!), and break down every match on the card as well.Afterward they review NJPW's two Wrestling Dontaku shows from 5/3 & 5/4 in Fukuoka (after a brief overview of big matches from two previous stops on the tour in Hiroshima & Saga), including: full breakdowns of every match on both show, the Dog Pound Steel Cage match and how it compares to last year, directions heading into Dominion, Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI's goodbye to New Japan (for now?), LIJ's official breakup, Hirooki Goto's already record breaking title reign and how it compares to other recent title reigns, a bit of a mea culpa from John on Callum Newman, ZSJ & Shingo being the next title challengers and whether Shingo might win the title (and turn heel??), Kyushu Pro involvement, and much more! Wow, TWO new episodes of The Most Active Podcast in History™ in one month?! Aren't you lucky?? Yes, John is back again this time with a special double-sized episode of Omakase that's essentially two episodes in one!For the first half, John is joined by Beth (@lovesongwriter on X) as the two longtime Tetsuya Naito superfans talk about the shocking news of his & BUSHI's departure from New Japan Pro Wrestling. They get into their feelings when the news dropped, what it was like to get checked in on by everyone they both knew like someone just died, wild speculation on what might be next for Naito (and what they would personally like to see as fans), and discussion of his career and legacy with New Japan! The second half of the episode sees John joined by Velkej Bracha (@Velkej_Bracha on X), host of the ActWres Stage podcast (here's their most recent episode on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDfPF6W4M9U) and a longtime STARDOM/joshi fan for a full primer on the World Wonder Ring in 2025! John and Velkej go over what they both feel has been the promotion of the year so far, discussing the incredibly deep roster, various units, and some of the biggest moments and matches dating back to last December's Sumo Hall show. Then they launch into a preview of STARDOM's huge All Star Grand Queendom show from Yokohama Arena next week (which Velkej will be attending live!), plus a brief preview of the final Korakuen show a few days earlier as well.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Just a day after our last show it was announced Jeff Cobb was leaving the company and the tag titles were vacated. Then one of the biggest stunners of the year was announced: Tetsuya Naito (and BUSHI) are out of NJPW. After an alleged mutual agreement Dylan rides solo to go through the history of the 3 men, what they meant to NJPW (including a spicy take or two about Naito's usage through the years) and what the future could hold. What's it gonna be? What led to this? Where is it all going? For Cobb, we pretty much know where he's going. Naito...there are a world of infinite possibilities. Welcome to the Squared Cirlce Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! The second night of the 2025 New Japan Cup delivered hard-hitting action, surprising moments, and plenty of discussions about the state of the tournament. Here, we break down the key matches, highlight standout performances, and explore areas of improvement for some of the competitors.Match Highlights & AnalysisBolton Oleg vs. Badluck FaleOleg, a recently graduated Young Lion, picked up a solid win over Fale. The match itself was a showcase of power, but the question remains: is Bolton Oleg truly the next big thing? While he has the size and strength, there's still work to be done in crafting a character that fans can connect with.Great O-Khan vs. El PhantasmoThis match showcased technical wrestling, with Great O-Khan controlling the pace. His stiff strikes and submission work made for a compelling bout, ultimately securing his victory with the Eliminator. This match further cemented Great O-Khan's role as a dominant force in NJPW.Ishii vs. Drilla MaloneyDrilla Maloney continues his rise in New Japan, securing a hard-fought victory over Ishii. While the match was intense, the length and repeated “fighting spirit” no-sells may have overstayed their welcome. Regardless, Drilla is proving to be a must-watch competitor with a growing presence.Main Event: Naito vs. Callum NewmanNaito faced Callum Newman in a match that highlighted both Newman's strengths and weaknesses. Newman, known as the “Prince of Pace,” brings high-speed offense, but the match revealed an over-reliance on his mentor Will Ospreay's style.Naito methodically targeted Newman's previously injured knee, controlling the match's flow. Newman's biggest weakness was his inability to sell the injury effectively. At times, he abandoned selling his knee altogether, immediately bouncing up for high-impact moves, which hurt the story being told in the ring.Tape Study Takeaways on Callum NewmanNewman has the tools, but refinement is needed. Here are a few key pointers:Character Development: Who is Callum Newman beyond “Prince of Pace”? He needs a deeper identity beyond his nickname.Match Psychology: Selling is crucial. If an opponent works the knee, there should be consistency in his movements and offense.Crowd Engagement: Newman should work on interacting with the audience more, making his presence felt.Ditch the Ospreay Mannerisms: While influenced by Ospreay, he needs to develop his own unique arsenal.Looking AheadWith Bolton Oleg, Great O-Khan, Drilla Maloney, and Naito advancing, the tournament is shaping up to be an intriguing one. Can Newman evolve? Will Drilla's momentum continue? These are key questions to follow in the coming rounds.Links:campsite.bio/marieshadowshttps://marieshadows-shop.fourthwall.comhttps://youtube.com/squaredcirclepodcasthttps://marieshadows.substack.com

Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! We are currently in year 6, season 6! I am your host Marie Shadows! Today, on the Squared Circle Podcast we are debunking a Dave Meltzer's tweet about his claim that Chris Charlton (NJPW Commentator and NJPW office worker) is on an indefinite hiatus from NJPW commentary. We are debunking this not for clout but for educational and informative purposes. Thanks for listening and sharing! More context over at my Substack wrestling newsletter: https://marieshadows.substack.com - free to sign up. In this episode, we dive deep into the controversy surrounding Dave Meltzer's tweet about Chris Charlton's alleged hiatus from NJPW commentary. Here's what we cover: Meltzer's Claim: Breaking down the tweet that sparked it all — why Chris Charlton is allegedly on hiatus due to anti-AEW comments during the Dynasty Show. NJPW's Transparency: Examples of how NJPW communicates major updates, proving why this claim lacks credibility. Parallels with Wrestling Drama: Comparing this situation to the CM Punk/Elite fallout and the absence of concrete evidence in both cases. Chris Charlton's NJPW Role: Explaining Charlton's multifaceted responsibilities and why his absence from New Year Dash!! is entirely logical. The AEW-NJPW Partnership: Examining comments from NJPW wrestlers like Gabe Kidd and Naito about AEW's one-sided partnership. Double Standards in AEW: Analyzing examples of AEW's inconsistent handling of outspoken talent, including Ricky Starks and Jake Hager. Wrestle Dynasty Disappointment: Could this controversy be a distraction from the poor attendance numbers of Wrestle Dynasty? Tony Khan's No-Show: Discussing the disrespect implied by Khan's absence from Wrestle Dynasty. Join us as we separate fact from fiction and expose the flaws in wrestling's misinformation machine! Ho ho ho, fuckers. Join Statto and David (and Daniel for a brief cameo recorded before he was detained by the authorities after someone actually listened to the 2022 Christmas Special and found out what he said about the Queen) to hoover up another line of festive cheer. This year we once again field the questions of our most deranged fans, review the best and worst of 2024 in the usual paltry detail, and Statto turns in his most shocking performance yet in the annual quiz. After that, we take another trip east to watch wrestlers from Japan and the Philippines fight for a Singaporean title in China, and decide once and for all who the ten defining wrestlers of the 1990s are (spoiler alert: there will be no Stone Cold or Goldberg, but there will be multiple wrestlers with negative star matches from the Observer to their name). Zack has brought it home and ushered in a new era and orange you glad it has finally happened? Triumph and heartbreak punctuated an eventful King of Pro Wrestling show and the Stiff Bois are here to review it all. The lads exult in what was a great show, detailing all the key highs, big moments, interesting beats and controversial reactions. The lads bask in the orange glow of ZSJ, breaking down the match and all that informed it before exploring: Shota Boo-mino bringing the future into focus, SANADA working in the subtle, Naito getting his deserved flowers, Finlay and the Global title's identity becoming clearer, Kishin Douki delivering a shocking late turn on the Way to the Grandmaster, Tanahashi knees now only having just over a year to hang on, Aussie Roi losing nothing, TMDK making Australia proud, Kevin Knight hitting unreal heights as the War Dogs become unleashed, and Hiromu cooking something up (and not even needing a rice cooker). KOPW was a show so big even YOH couldn't find the time to announce his return on it. Listen to the Stiff Bois discuss it all in this monster review episode. Bill Sumio Naito, who died at age 70 in 1996, was a Portland-born son of Japanese immigrants who became one of the city's most significant business and civic leaders. Erica Naito-Campbell, his granddaughter, grew up next door to him and has written a new biography of the man who lends his name to the road thousands of people drive and bike on every day. The book, “Portland's Audacious Champion,” details Naito’s life from growing up in East Portland, through military service in World War II, to his role in much of Portland’s iconic geography: from the Portland sign near the Burnside Bridge to Waterfront Park. Natio-Campbell joins us to share more.
