This week, we're scratching The Itch to fight evil with poetry. Aaron does his first ever solo interview with one of his favorite artists, poet and musician Micah Bournes. Micah is raising funds for a double album exploring the ins and outs of romance. Along with that, Micah discusses the nature of war, living as a nomad, using his words to create music, and, well, the audacity of caucacity. It's a wild ride that might change how you view art and the experience of being Black in America. Enjoy. You can support Micah via his Patreon, where he constantly shares new poems and art that is influencing him. Micah Bournes is a poet, rapper, singer and speaker. He stopped by our place to perform a house show along the route of his Simple Dreams Tour. For this episode, we first discuss the history of Moody Bible Institute's compromises related to race. This serves as a microcosm of a problem found throughout the world of church related colleges and universities. At minute 40, we shift our discussion to the idea of abolition of police and prisons. One of our favorite resources - Walter Bruggeman - writes, “The imagination is defined as nothing less than ‘the magnificent cause of being.’ Clearly, human transformative activity depends upon a transformed imagination...What the prophetic tradition knows is that it could be different, and the difference can be enacted.”What is the difference you imagine? We imagine a world, a spirituality, that values collaborative power, equity, justice, reconciliation, embodiment, connection, and human flourishing for ALL humankind. It is possible...if only we can first imagine it. We are fully convinced this is the way of Jesus. Jesus taps into our imagination offering us a way to be fully human, fully alive, fully in our body! For our second episode I speak to poet Micah Bournes on social justice, art, creativity and faith. We explore what is has been like for him to grow up as a black man in America, the reality of white privilege and white supremacy, defining success at a personal level, and how art might just be the answer to all that is broken. Micah has recently released a brand new book of poetry called "Here Comes This Dreamer", and we feature a number of his poems throughout the podcast. Micah's art is raw, honest, vulnerable and hard hitting - a voice we all need to hear in this time.

The first segment responds to a question about acts of evangelism for a seminary assignment. We discuss what it means to share good news that really is good. Then, 50 minutes in we move to an interview with a young woman named Autumn who demonstrates a bit of the boldness we discussed last week. Jeff asked her to join the show after hearing her poetry, which she shared at an open mic event headlined by Micah Bournes for the Crosswise Institute. As an exercise in unpacking her poem (which you can read at protectyournoggin.org) she shares her struggles with doubt, depression and anxiety but also her abiding faith. TW: Suicide, Depression
12/12/19 Our guest on this episode was writer/poet/friend Micah Bournes. Jacob has known him for 15 years and they have both seen the other go through some incredible growth, personally and spiritually, over the last decade and a half. We opened the show with an exciting event that happened at the bowling alley the previous night, then talked about big baseball news and the upcoming football weekend (0:00-32:50). Then we learned about Micah's sports history, including playing baseball, soccer and football as a kid into high school (32:50-53:40). From there Micah gave us a rundown of his family, including some history of how his parents ended up in SoCal and insight into the life of being one of six children (53:40-1:00:30). That led into a lengthy discussion of Micah's experience in school and how some of his struggles in the classroom shaped some of the success he has had in his career. It lead into a lengthy discussion about education and how individuals find success based on some of their advantages and disadvantages (1:00:30-1:42:10). We got back to being focused on Micah and taking a thorough look into how Micah developed his creativity and became a writer, rapper, and poet (1:42:10-2:07:45). We ended our conversation with a look at the importance of community in our lives, specifically the art communities Micah has become a part of and the bible study group that him and Jacob were in and the role those played in their lives, and some of the most meaningful traveling journeys and personal interactions Micah has had in his career (2:07:45-2:48:06). Thank you for listening and please share and give us some feedback on any of the available platforms!
12/10/19 Our guest on this episode was Aaron Meade. Hailing from just outside the city of Cork in the great country of Ireland, Aaron is the first guest we have had on the show who was not actually recording with us in person. Go us for utilizing technology! We started the show with Jacob telling the story of how he and Aaron got acquainted (specifically how Jacob ignored Aaron for a year) and then all of us recapping our weekends, including Jake and Jacob going to the Rams/Seahawks game and interesting travel stories (0:00-15:18). Then, we introduce the first event in From Bob's Office history: "Jake vs Ham", this Friday at 1 pm. (15:18-22:40). From there we talk about the football weekend. We start with Packers/Redskins, but get go on an age tangent and Jacob tells the story of how he almost made the Clippers Summer League team once. We get back on track looking at playoff scenarios, Jameis Winston, and the final college playoff rankings (22:40-41:17). Then we briefly cover Lakers/Timberwolves in basketball, and the Stephen Strasburg/Gerrit Cole/new pitching rule topics in baseball (41:17-47:45). We finally turn our attention specifically to Aaron and hear about his already lengthy ultimate frisbee resume, and do a little comparison of Irish ultimate culture to American ultimate culture (47:45-1:09:43). From there we shifted into overall sport culture in Ireland, including the incredible-looking sports of Gaelic football and hurling and the emergence of American football, and Aaron's personal interests in American sports (1:09:43-1:34:15). After that we drifted a little into Ireland's popular culture, a bit about the country's history and celebrations (practically every day is "a reason to drink"), and the upcoming tradition, "12 Pubs of Christmas" (1:34:15-1:49:07). Then we got to talk about Aaron's family, what his parents do for a living and how he dealt with them splitting up when he was fairly young (1:49:07-1:58:10). Our last topic involved a very complicated explanation of the education system in Ireland, Aaron's unorthodox journey through it, how it compares to the American education system, and what the future looks like for him (1:58:10-2:18:45). We ended the show with Jake asking a couple of his patented fun questions, leading to an explanation of a ridiculous mountain goat fair (2:18:45-2:34;39). We are incredibly excited to share this episode with you, and are really looking forward to having Micah Bournes on Thursday and "Jake vs Ham" on Friday. Stay tuned!
On September 8, 2019, Micah Bournes was in town and shared a few pieces with FirstPres Hayward’s Sunday Family Gathering. It was a blessing to have him and the pieces definitely resonated. Micah is a creative man of faith. In addition to performing poetry and music, he often speaks and teaches on creative writing, pursuing justice, and the way of Jesus. In partnership with World Relief and The Justice Conference, Micah has been able to share his passions and gifts all over the world. Like most kids growing up in Long Beach during the 90s, Micah was raised under the influence of hip hop. He regularly memorized rap lyrics from his favorite songs. But it wasn't until college when he started writing his own music; starting with hip hop and then branching out into the blues. A group of strangers walked into a room in LA. One by one they stood up, shared their most private thoughts, struggles, and desires. To many this sounds terrifying but, after seeing a spoken word open mic, Micah was hooked. That day he decided to give spoken word poetry a try. It worked. We continue with our series on John 3:16, explaining more about Hell, which is both a power and a place. As a power, humans often unleash it with their own tongues. But as a place, is it really a lake of fire with eternal conscious torment? Even in the garden of Eden, he did not send Adam and Eve off to be burned forever; He removed them from His presence. They were exiled out of God’s best. As a matter of fact, Mike shows us many Bible verses that model God’s treatment of sinful people: God banishes them. We learned that there was an actual Gehenna where the Jews who had forsaken their faith went to worship idols. They even burned their own children as sacrifices. The three important facts to know about Gehenna are: it was symbolic of what it meant to be given over to wickedness. God did not use fire to torture the children; human hands did. And it was outside of the main city. These people were sinners who were banished from his presence. This leads us to understand that hell is exile, not torture. Spoken Word by Micah Bournes Micah visited us again today and shared more of his amazing poetry and anecdotes. He spoke about a ministry he was in some time ago—a juvenile facility in Chicago where he noticed that the majority of kids were black. He had us think about whether blacks were more sinful, and told a compelling story about a 14 year old boy who was there because he sold drugs to literally feed his family. The bottom line was that many Christians would label or pronounce judgment on this boy, but we need to see the difference between sinful thieves and poor men stealing bread. Today’s episode we present a breadth of creativity and passion from two special guests. @MicahBournes provided “Spoken Word Poetry,” which is poetry written to be performed. Micah’s three selections focused on the ambiguity of being “normal,” earthly relationships versus heavenly relationships, and the effects of peer pressure. His artistic presentation was thought-provoking, dramatic, and tinged with humor. Our guest speaker, Megan Fate Marshman, Director of Women’s Ministry at Hume Lake Camps, shared the “Good News” of Christ in an animated and engaging manner. She presented the traditional “Roman’s Road to Salvation” verses (Romans 3-12) in reverse order. She did this via the story of her quirky 94 year-old grandmother, who she chose to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. Megan emphasized how these verses from the book of Romans start with God’s love and His plan for mankind, and they progress to the invitation of mankind into His plan. She clearly explained how anyone, regardless of weaknesses and short-comings, can come to know Christ and discover purpose for living. Mike, answers a few questions from our Q&A number. Questions included: 1.) “How can we keep the church relevant, and keep the main thing the main thing?” 2.) “Is it possible there is not a real hell, and what does it mean to perish?” 3.) “Why do we assign a gender to God?” Learn more about Megan at: http://meganfate.com/ Learn more about Micah Bournes at: http://www.micahbournes.com/ Would love to see your comments and thoughts below!
