Join Tamara for an interview with photographer and multidisciplinary artist Nathaniel Thompson. He was born in Thailand, grew up on St. Simon's Island, and has now lived in Savannah for about 4 years. He primarily uses vintage and analog devices such as early digital cameras, 1980's slide projectors, medium formats, 35mm, and instant film. Nathaniel finds inspiration through his current geographical location, road trips, and historical reenactments, depicting images of everyday architecture that are both nostalgic and beautiful, and the relationship between the past and present. He has a show up now through June 21st at Cafe M here in Savannah, which includes photographs, a vintage iMac displaying his images, and a hand-bound limited edition photo book for sale. Check out his work and follow him here: https://www.nathanielryanthompson.com/ https://www.instagram.com/nr.thompson/ Topics in their chat include: Nathaniel grew up with a photographer dad and grandpa and received his first camera at age 6 (a digital Kodak point-and-shoot); in high school he entered Reflections, the PTA-run art contests, and won multiple times up to the county and/or state level; armed with his first film camera, he took a 3ish-months-long solo road trip from Ohio all over the eastern U.S., generally just sleeping in his car; how his drives on the small roads between Savannah and Brunswick inspired his love of folk and outsider art, as well as estate sales and thrift stores to find ephemera and vintage photography equipment; how he recently spent time with Nomadic Photo Ark, learning their darkroom process and how to use their vintage 4x5 camera; what is lomography film?; development is happening very quickly here in the south, and he is driven to discover sites and buildings and document before they've changed; what was Kodachrome film, other than the title of the Paul Simon song?; and the recent shift of people going back to printing out photos and hanging them up in their home, or even reenacting "vacation slide viewing" by having PowerPoint parties (!). Tune in and get all the details!

Nathaniel Thompson is EVERYWHERE surrounding film and physical media nowadays. He has been present on releases from the vast majority of these boutique labels, he has appeared in multiple series on Shudder, written multiple books surrounding the industry, and is possibly most known for being the individual behind Mondo-Digital.com. He is genuinely one of the most prolific film scholars/contributors of our time. We had a lengthy discussion about so many different topics including how these labels get rights for films, how German crime films need more representation on physical media, how other commentators (including the recently passed Sergio Mims) work together to make a good commentary that will interest film fans, and SO MUCH MORE. Please watch this incredibly enjoyable discussion with Nathaniel Thompson! - Note: Sergio Mims passed away suddenly this week. You will see/hear a short piece about him at the beginning because he came up organically in our conversation. Episode four of the third season of Free the Seed! the Open Source Seed Initiative podcast Do you have questions about OSSI, intellectual property rights, or plant breeding that you would like answered on this show? Please share them with us through our listener survey at http://bit.ly/FreetheSeedsurvey This podcast is for anyone interested in the plants we eat – farmers, gardeners and food curious folks who want to dig deeper into where their food comes from. It’s about how new crop varieties make it into your seed catalogues and onto your tables. In each episode, we hear the story of a variety that has been pledged as open-source from the plant breeder that developed it. In this episode, we'll be talking about carrot breeding in general, and two breeding projects in particular. First, Claire and Irwin will tell us about the Open Source Seed Initiative-pledged carrot breeding populations that they’ve developed at University of Wisconsin-Madison. They’ll explain how the UW-Madison Goldman Lab is able to speed up the seed production process to fit it into one single year using greenhouses and vernalization chambers. Then we’ll hear from Petra about the project to develop ‘Dulcinea’, a new variety offered by Fruition Seeds, which Irwin and Claire have collaborated on. And all three of our guests will weigh in on the basic steps of any carrot breeding project. Seventh and eighth graders are taking hold of a piece of history of their interest, researching it using credible sources, and presenting it in the form of a museum exhibit, dramatic presentation, interactive website, documentary, or paper. Mrs. Naghib is modeling her class project after the National History Project, and students will be working on their project one day a week during history class from October until March, when students have the option of submitting their finished work to the NHD Regional competition at University of Virginia. The theme of this year’s competition is “Conflict and Compromise in History”. The over-arching goal of this project is to “provide for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective. Mrs. Naghib learned about this project at the National Conference for the teaching of Social Studies, which she attended last fall. Just like her students, she is trying something new – a new way of teaching as a facilitator rather than a lecturer. Once a week, she lets her students take responsibility for their own learning as she steps back to let the ideas flow. She did provide the guidelines for presenting the project which included writing a good thesis, conducting authentic research, and developing an annotated bibliography. But the students are taking it from there, and the excitement they are demonstrating for this project is palpable. Innovation – alive and well in science labs and the halls of history at Powhatan. Join me for my podcast at the top of the page with Mrs. Naghib and her students Louisa Craig, Gillian Banks, and Nathaniel Thompson as they share their history innovation story.

Tyler Lucas and Nathaniel Thompson are making a difference in the lives of 4th - 8th graders. They are helping run Start-Up Kids a project founded by Gerhard Apfelthaler of California Lutheran University's School of Management, Maria Ballesteros-Sola and Vlad Vaiman of CLU. Note: Gerhard and Vlad have been on the show before. This project, now in its second year, is expanding as they move to the third year. Over an eight week period, these two, and others on the team, spend 30 minutes a week helping students realize their entrepreneurial ambitions. This project is so successful, one of the teams was asked to present their project at the opening of the 2017 New Venture competition at HUB101. Who doesn't love hearing energetic, passionate young 12-14-year-olds who want to change the world? The students learn marketing, design, product development, costing and take the classes very seriously. You'll love hearing examples of how enthusiastic the students are in their desire to improve situations they think will make a huge difference in the world. Like making a kid-friendly version of Instagram, because their parents won't let them log in to it. This coming school year sees the program expand to 5 schools. Over the eight weeks they are taught three models; Explore, Create and Build. One of the tenets they teach is not everyone has to be an entrepreneur. They explain there's plenty of room on the teams for workers and individual contributors. The biggest surprise for the guys? It was how much the students retained over the period of eight weeks. If you have a 12-year-old in your life, you might consider moving to Ventura County, so they have a shot at getting into one of these classes. If you are interested in putting one of these programs together in your school district, drop the guys a note.
