Playliste: Jamix xx - Baddy on the floor London Grammar - LA Falco - Satellite to satellite Jane's Addiction - Been caught stealing The Smiths - The headmaster ritual The Lightning Seeds - Lucky you Crowded House - Weather with you Genesis - Jesus he knows me Inner Circle - Sweat (A la la la la long) Jon Secada - Just another day Jimmy Nail - Ain't no doubt

Playliste: Coldplay – The escapist The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band R.E.M. – Nightswimming Fugees – The beast Fugees – Fu-gee-la The KLF – The white room No Doubt – Don't speak The Goo Goo Dolls – Iris Ace Of Base – Wheel of fortune Nas feat. Lauren Hill – If I ruled the World (Imagine that) The Smokin' Mojo Filters – Come together Oasis – Cast no shadow Björk – Human behavoiur Madonna – Drowned World/Substitute for love Creamy - Æblemand Whitney Houston - Run to you Seal - Kiss from a rose

This week, in a defamation trial in the US, Alex Jones, founder of the Infowars website, was ordered to pay nearly one billion dollars in damage to eight families and an FBI agent. He had falsely claimed a mass shooting of twenty young children between ages of 6 and 7 and six adults at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut in 2012 was a hoax. Because of his lies grieving families were harassed and threatened by his followers. Nicole Hockley's six year old son Dylan was killed in the shooting and was part of the defamation case and awarded millions in damages. Nicole joins Anita to discuss her response, and her ongoing work as the co-founder of the Sandy Hook Promise, which works to protect children from gun violence. Manisha Tailor MBE is the assistant head of coaching for the under 9's to 16's at QPR Football Club. She is the only person of South Asian heritage to be working as a coach in English professional football. She discusses her new book ‘Dream Like Me: South Asian Football Trailblazers'. National Album Day returns for its 5th year tomorrow and this year turns the spotlight on debut albums. Previous themes include women in music and the 1980s. With activity across BBC Sounds, Anita hears from indie folk trio The Staves. Do you know that total demand for the music album art format - which includes audio / video streaming and sales - has increased by 15.7 percent? The information was cited by Nielsen in its semi-annual trend report on the music industry. The news came at the end of June, confirming that the story that the music album format is outdated and that 'no one is listening' is simply out of the question. And this is more than a reason to look forward to the National Album Day this year. Our Album of the week belongs to the Rijeka singer Mirna Škrgatić, and songs that will be enriched by this year's Incubator are, among others, performed by Songkillers, Divlje jagode, Tony Cetinski and Mia Dimšić. List of tracks: Divlji dječak – Brod (Menart), Songkillers - Teži slučaj (Radiofonik Remix) (Aquarius Records, Bonton Music), Ivana Kindl – Imamo Razlog (Universal Music Hrvatska), Mirna – Snovi (Menart), Tihy – Dođi bliže (Dallas Records), Vatra – Vatra se primiče (Dallas Records), Divlje jagode – Sama si (Croatia Records), Vanna - Kad smo se voljeli (Croatia Records), Tony Cetinski – Čudu se nadam uzalud (Hit Records), Vedran Roguljić - Zapleši sa mnom (Scardona), Mia Dimšić i Marko Tolja - Sva blaga ovog svijeta (Croatia Records), Chui – Tebi putujem (Andrea Ljekaj Remix) (Dancing Bear).

In celebration of National Album Day, Penguin Cafe’s Arthur Jeffes joins Classic Album Sundays’ founder and BBC Radio 6 Music host Colleen Murphy to discuss the story behind their latest album Handfuls of Night. The album, which will be played in full over a world-class hi-fi system, is the follow-up to Penguin Cafe’s much applauded record The Imperfect Sea (2017) and sees Arthur Jeffes’ journey follow in his father’s footsteps – on a project inspired by the Antarctic. Handfuls of Night began life after Greenpeace commissioned Jeffes to write four pieces of music corresponding to four breeds of penguins, to help raise awareness for the endangered Antarctic seas.
In this special live addition of Tape Notes, John is joined by Naomi & Lisa-Kaindé of Ibeyi and XL Recordings head honcho/producer Richard Russell, to talk about how they craft their music together in the studio. In celebration of National Album Day and recorded in The Pool room at Miloco Studios, the trio wax lyrical about their experiences working together and take a deep dive into the methods and techniques used in recording & producing the albums Ibeyi & Ash. Listen to find out why there's more to using a broken glass samples than meets the eye, that sampling Michelle Obama is a big deal, and why you should never leave the room when you're making a beat with Naomi & Richard. Tracks discussed: Oya, Transmission/Michaelion, No Man is Big Enough for My Arms Big thanks to AIM, National Album Day, and Miloco Studios for teaming up with us and making this happen. National Album Day!! I verbally share the story of the creation of our new album, as well as the plot of the album itself. **** "Trent Hemingway was headed to Jasper to meet his wife, Amy, for their anniversary. When she doesn't show up for the agreed upon time he sets off down Highway 93, heading south to Banff - hoping to retrace her footsteps. Amy works for an outdoors tour company known as Good Living Foundation. GLF are known for their deep-woods adventures all between Jasper and Banff. Upon contacting GLF it was revealed that no one had a straight answer to her last whereabouts... The tension and panic picks up and fatigue sets in as Trent hits up all the famous tourist spots down Highway 93, which are used as start/stop points for the GLF tours. As the mystery gets closer to being solved it becomes apparent that Trent is not alone in the woods. There is a creature that is following him and seems to be behind his missing wife. What will become of Amy and Trent? What lies in wait beyond the tree line??" Good Living Foundation is a bit of an experimental album that uses both the lyrics and musical textures to tell the story. Due to the fact the band went through 3 members leaving in 2017, Matt made his best attempt to fill in the missing pieces with a dual-amplifier system, a loop pedal and some vocal effects; Brendan picked up a synthesizer. Halfway through the recording process the band reached out to Blair, who had made a cameo role in the group for 2015's 'The Revealor - Side B'. Blair provides the soundscape synth and samples that stir around in the background, as well as bridge the songs and story together as the album progresses. There are a lot of "noise" textures in this album - a lot of overdriven tubes & tape machines and was mastered entirely with analog gear (Aria Mastering). There was an attempt to use a warm noise to fill in some of the missing pieces from the lack of band members; the tubes and tape machine became a band member, in a sense. The album intentionally starts fairly clean (There Before, Neil Young Once Said) and adds some dirt and overdrive and aggression throughout the album (Time Away, Strange Familiars) in order to advance the plot line. By the end the album reaches and climax and resolve with the bands longest song to date, 'Another Diamond Way' which clocks in at 8:27 GLF comes full circle on the final track 'Here Before'. These last 2 mentioned songs add the talents of Olivia Ostrom - she does a duet with Matt on both tracks. Olivia portrays the "missing persons" character that has been found at the end of the story (hence the last 2 songs) - so as to end on a happy note, as well as introduce a new band member in a unique way. Stew Kirkwood is back again to help out with the mixing; he did the heavy lifting to focus the somewhat noisy recording into a cohesive piece. Matt did the engineering and editing - all production was done in Electric Soil Recordings. This is the 5th release from the GLF camp since 2012's Vs. The release of the first single 'Time Away' is slotted for September 17th, the album is to be released on October 4th. The bands new offering, as well as their entire back catalogue, will be available on all major streaming sites as of November 9th - an event that will be exclamation-pointed by a show at Edmonton's Blakbar, the same night.

Our final event for National Album Day saw us joined by Sonic Youth founding member Thurston Moore celebrating 30 years since the release of 'Daydream Nation' at The John Peel Archive in Stowmarket. Sonic Youth have been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do” using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings and preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. The band is considered to be a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. Read more at classicalbumsundays.com
Check out the full interview from our evening with Paloma Faith at The British Library as she was interviewed by CAS founder Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy ahead of the first ever National Album Day. Paloma Faith’s powerful pop-soul style and captivating stage presence have brought her a string of platinum and multi-platinum albums, including the most recent, The Architect. An actor and activist as well as singer, Faith’s is refreshingly honest and forthright voice in the music world. We were delighted ti be joined by Primal Scream the evening before the release of Primal Scream ‘Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Recordings’ as part of our National Album Day celebrations to discuss their memories of the recording sessions and why the original mix has never been released until now. Teaming up with legendary producer Tom Dowd and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section of David Hood (bass) and Roger Hawkins (drums) at Ardent Studios in Memphis, the resulting recordings from those classic sessions showcase the more country soul, rock’n’roll side to a band who continue to surprise. It’s Primal Scream as you’ve never heard them before. Read more at classicalbumsundays.com
To celebrate the first ever National Album Day we were joined by Dave Davies from The Kinks to look back at 50 years since the release of ‘The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society’ at The John Peel Centre For Creative Arts in Stowmarket. The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society wasn’t initially a success upon it’s release, coming along at a time when Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Led Zeppelin’s debut, and the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet were the flavours of the day. Although praised by many critics, it was largely overlooked by the public. However, as years passed, it’s following grew until it become viewed as a masterpiece. For many it is now justly considered Davies’ and The Kinks’ most satisfying album: a creative highpoint matched only by the band’s landmark singles of the period. Read more: classicalbumsundays.com
In a special edition of Mastertapes to celebrate National Album Day, Elvis Costello, the consummate album artist talks to John Wilson and plays his way back through a career that has spanned five decades, premiers exclusive tracks from his new album and takes questions from the audience. From his critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, released in 1977 to his newly released Look Now, his first new album in five years, Elvis Costello has been widely recognised as one of Britain's best songwriters. From early classics like Watching The Detectives, Accidents Will Happen, and Almost Blue, all the way through to Jimmie Standing In The Rain, Unwanted Number and Under Lime his talent for wordplay has remained undimmed. He remains a composer who works across a range of styles, always mining a deep, rich seam of melodic and harmonic treasures - all of which is on display in these programmes recorded in the iconic BBC studios at Maida Vale. Accompanying him is his career-long collaborator, pianist Steve Nieve.
