Forty years ago Clare Grogan was on the cover of Smash Hits yet again and was the fourth guest at our garden party on June 3. Here she remembers the key events that have happened since which include meeting Bill Forsyth and the success of Gregory's Girl (and why she only saw it for the first time recently), touring with Siouxsie & the Banshees when still at school, life as a pop star in the golden age, being Kristine Kochanski in Red Dwarf and its obsessive fans, her time in Father Ted, Kim Wilde's call to get her to join the Here And Now ‘80s pop package tour and a great story about Nik Kershaw and John Taylor. Listen to what happened when she told the audience how she loves and needs applause – and loves “loud cheering” even more. I can't remember the first time I met my friend Clare Grogan. But like many Gen-Xers, I remember the first time I saw her in the cult movie Gregory's Girl, and then, later the same year, on Top of the Pops with Altered Images, performing the band's top 10 hits Happy Birthday and I Could Be Happy. (I have a bit of a soft spot for that last one.)Still in her teens, she was living a life the rest of us could only dream of. Until, at 25, with three top ten albums under her belt, she left it all behind so she could, as she puts it, “feel where I came from again”.Since then she has had countless presenting and acting roles in everything from Eastenders to Skins. And now, 38 years after her last outing!, she's back with a new Altered Images album Mascara Streakz.Clare zoomed in to talk about deciding where you want to go in life, doing every show like it might be your last and being back on the road at 60. We discussed the unexpected impact of her daughter hitting the age she was when Altered Images hit the big time, her “difficult 40s” and why it's never too late to start a band.*Mascara Streakz is released on 26 August.** You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please join The Shift community. This week we are kicking off our ScotchTober Fest season off with Classic Scottish School Japes in Gregory's Girl. The episode is so much more than town planning, Mitre Delta footballs and Penguin facts but it's certainly all of those!Your homework this week is to join us on the Socials:Twitterhttps://twitter.com/100thingspodInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/100thingsfilm/Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/100thingsfilm---Gregory's Girl is a 1980 Scottish coming-of-age romantic comedy film written and directed by Bill Forsyth and starring John Gordon Sinclair, Dee Hepburn and Clare Grogan. The film is set in and around a state secondary school in the Abronhill district of Cumbernauld.Gregory's Girl was ranked No. 30 in the British Film Institute's list of the top 100 British films and No. 29 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 best high school movies.Gregory Underwood (John Gordon Sinclair) is an awkward teenager who plays in his school football team. They are not doing very well, so the coach (Jake D'Arcy) holds a trial to find new players. Dorothy (Dee Hepburn) shows up and, despite the coach's sexist misgivings, proves to be a very good player. She subsequently takes Gregory's place as centre forward, and Gregory in turn replaces his friend Andy (Robert Buchanan) as goalkeeper.Gregory is all for her making the team, as he finds her very attractive. However, he has to compete for her attention with all the other boys who share the same opinion. Gregory initially confides in his best friend Steve (William Greenlees), the most mature of Gregory's circle of friends, and asks him for help in attracting Dorothy. Steve, however, is unable to assist him.Acting on the advice of his precocious 10-year-old sister Madeleine (Allison Forster), he awkwardly asks Dorothy out on a date. She accepts, but Dorothy's friend, Carol (Caroline Guthrie), shows up at the rendezvous instead and informs Gregory that something had come up; Dorothy will not be able to make it. He is disappointed, but Carol talks him into taking her to the chip shop. When they arrive, she hands him off to another friend, Margo (Carol Macartney), and leaves. By then, Gregory is rather confused, but goes for a walk with the new girl. On their stroll, they encounter a waiting Susan (Clare Grogan), another of Dorothy's friends, and Margo leaves. Susan confesses that it was all arranged by her friends, including Dorothy. She explains, "It's just the way girls work. They help each other."They go to the park and talk. At the date's end, Gregory is more than pleased with Susan, and the two kiss numerous times on his doorstep before calling it a night and arranging a second date. Madeleine, who had been watching from the window, quizzes him on his date and calls him a liar when he claims he did not kiss Susan.Gregory's friends, Andy and Charlie (Graham Thompson), are even more inept with girls but see Gregory at various times with three apparent dates, and are envious of his new success. They try to hitchhike to Caracas, where Andy has heard the women greatly outnumber the men, but fail at that as well.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/100things)

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

Professor April McMahon is the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Education and Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Kent, and it was a great pleasure to meet her for this week’s interview. April was born in Edinburgh while a Beatles concert was taking place nearby and she recounts at the start of our conversation how her father was defined more by his absence than his presence during her childhood. She speaks candidly about how there weren’t many opportunities open to her as a child and how her mother had to work ‘hand to mouth’. As a child, reading books from the library van was April’s passion. She also talks about being into the New Romantics, such as Ultravox, as well as Clare Grogan and Altered Images, and being a sucker for musicals. April sings to this day in the university chorus, and we learn whether April is a ‘Braveheart’ or a ‘Gregory’s Girl’ type of person. April recounts what inspired her to go to university and she talks about her false start, having initially chosen to do English Literature rather than Language, and what happened during her first lecture. We then learn whether there were particular teachers who inspired her and how she learned the art of writing down sounds in a precise way.  April grew up at a time when there was constant friction between London and Scottish politics, and in her first job at Cambridge she recalls giving a lecture on the day Margaret Thatcher resigned and how the students then stood up and applauded. We learn that April has never been a party member and will make decisions on the basis of the issues. April also talks about how her personal, Christian faith came along later when she was in her mid-30s. Radio played a role in April’s growing up. In particular, she remembers listening to ‘Junior Choice’ on Saturday mornings and she did her school homework while Radio 1 was on in the background.   In the final part of the interview we talk about how her memories are mixed due to her mother dying suddenly while April was at university, and, in terms of whether she has fulfilled the dreams she had when she was young, April discusses how she managed to get out of her more limited environment and how she is still in touch with her university friends.  We also learn whether April tends to look forwards or backwards and why she believes that there is no point in dwelling on times that weren’t good but that it is important to enjoy the present.  Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and April McMahon and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

This episode is also the first time the crew encounter another human, in the Mayor of Warsaw. Its too bad he instantly combusts the second he appears, but then some relationships are like that right? For more info on this episode of Red Dwarf, here is some excellent data! Notes According to the Series I DVD, this episode was intended to be the final episode of the series, withKochanski's hologram appearing and thus becoming a regular character in Series II. However, an earlier episode featuring Rimmer trying to build himself a new body was scrapped and the plot of "Me²" was devised. Ultimately, although Clare Grogan would reprise Kochanski a couple more times in later seasons, the character would not become a regular until Series VII, when another actress, Chloë Annett, would play the role as a living version of Kochanski from another dimension. Not counting the regular characters, or artificial intelligences such as the Revolving Toilet or Talkie Toaster, the Mayor of Warsaw, Confidence and Paranoia are the first human characters to be seen onboard Red Dwarf since the accident three million years earlier (the Cat Priest was course of the felis sapiens). Rimmer reveals that, as a hologram, he undertakes "Necrobics", hologramatic exercises for the dead. This may explain the exercise chart above the mirror in the sleeping quarters, since Lister and the Cat certainly never exercise. Rimmer is seen exercising frequently in the earlier series. Background Information Craig Ferguson and Lee Cornes originally auditioned for the parts of Lister and Rimmer, respectively. Ferguson later relocated to the US and became known for his work co-starring on The Drew Carey Showand, later, as host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Hattie Hayridge was once a guest on his talk show. The exterior of the ship seen during the space walk was a large, purpose-built set by designer Paul Montague. Peter Wragg's effects team built a full-sized dummy of Confidence to explode outside the ship with a high pressure burst. Actor Craig Charles appeared to be hurt, but was only acting. Red Dwarf composer Howard Goodall made a unique musical theme for the space walk scene. It is heard in the episode (as Confidence "cha-cha-cha"s) but the full isolated cue can be heard on the Series I DVD special features. It is a mash up of the 2001: A Space Odyssey-like opening cue of the old series with theThe Blue Danube Waltz. References The episode contains the first mention of Dream Recorders; these would become significant in the Series IIepisode "Parallel Universe", where as a one-off joke would transform into the Tongue Tied music video. Rimmer reveals that he was part of the "Love Celibacy Society" because he believed "their philosophy that love is a sickness, holds back your career and takes all your money"; but Lister says it was because he couldn't get a date. Ironically Rimmer would later fall in love with Nirvanah Crane on-board the Holoshipwhere love is also seen as something primitive. Inside the space suit, Lister mentions his claustrophobia. This would be mentioned again in the Xpress Lifts, and would became a major plot point in the Series VII episode "Duct Soup". Goofs When Lister is about to activate Kristine Kochanski's hologram disc in the Drive Room, her name is written on the box. Her first initial is incorrectly labelled as a "C" instead of a "K". This is perhaps referenced in the Series VII episode "Duct Soup", when Lister and Kochanski give Kryten a pendant with his name inscribed in the wrong way, similarly with a "C" instead of a "K". Despite the fact that Lister and his Confidence were in outer space to recover the Hologram disks, they don't seem to be experiencing zero gravity. The only instance of "zero gravity" shown is a shot of Lister jumping the barrier in an effort to evade Confidence which was edited in slow motion. This is maybe not a goof. It is possible that whatever generates artificial gravity aboard Red Dwarf also wor
