NEW: send me a text message! (I'd love to hear your thoughts - texts get to me anonymously, without charge or signup) The McDonald's on Elland Road in Leeds, near the stadium of Leeds United, is, apparently, the only McDonald's there is that has removed any element with the color red. Because Red, that is Manchester United, the rose of Lancaster in the badge of Manchester City. And roses, as well as soccer shirts, in Yorkshire are white… except until this Summer, when two red bulls, the logo of an Austrian energy drink, gallopped onto that white jersey, as the new main sponsor. I have a personal past here: I was in Austria when the same energy drink bought and erased Austria Salzburg, in the Austrian Bundeliga, in 2005. Red Bull, almost killed the old Austria Salzburg then. We now have Red Bull branded and/or owned clubs all over the world. The question in Leeds, then, is not about the color on a jersey, but rather "are we next in the now almost 20 year old history of Red Bull turning football clubs into promo and marketing vehicles?"Maybe. And maybe not. Brace for a little history lesson from me about what happened there, 20 years ago, but most of all look forward to Adam Willerton from the Leeds United Supporters Trust, the largest independent fan organization that related supporters and club heritage interests to the club, as well as Wayne Gamble who also works with the trust and is a fan of Leeds United - and Austria Salzburg. The soundtrack to today is Luke Haines' wonderful "Leeds United," about when the devil did indeed come to Yorkshire. Here are the lyrics. Can you believe it was back in February 2020 when we did our Britpop mixtape? How wild is that? This week we're joined by Glaswegian musician Andy Isacsson, otherwise known as Luminous, who has picked this week's record. We chat at length about his latest record, Precarious Karma, which took him about a decade to complete. We dive into the influences behind it, the reasons it took so long to finish, and much more. Then, we get into the business of talking about Baader Meinhof and Luke Haines. Unlike a lot of musicians, Andy opted not to release his music on Spotify. So you can check out his album here on Bandcamp. For Record Club subscribers, we've also added it to our catalogue. It's pretty great, and we thoroughly recommend giving it a whirl. To wit. We always knew we'd come back to Britpop one day and we always suspected we'd do so via unorthodox means. Baader Meinhof by Baader Meinhof, Luke Haines' sorta kinda first solo album, gave us a wee chance to do that. Not because it's a Britpop record – it's far from it – but Haines himself has proven to be quite a large figure in the history of that genre. He's also got a massive discography. In this episode, we touch a little bit on The Auteurs, then very briefly look at Black Box Recorder and a minimal selection of his solo discography. Maybe next week we'll escape from the 90s hole we seem to have found ourselves in, but I wouldn't bet on it...

Luke Haines in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Freaks-Out-Weirdos-Deviants-Righteous/dp/1788709349 https://www.facebook.com/lukehainesuk/ Haines formed numerous bands when he was at school. At college he joined The Servants who recorded two commercially unsuccessful albums. It was only when Haines formed The Auteurs with Glenn Collins and girlfriend Alice Readman, who had also been drafted into The Servants on occasion, in 1991, that he began to achieve some success.

This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier takes Monica's advice from an earlier episode and investigates America's obsession with quilts. He begins his journey by interviewing quilting podcaster Ashelyn Downs of “The Grateful Thread”. Farrier discovers that quilting is not just oldies sitting by the fire, but that there's a new movement of younger, more diverse quilters taking over America. He sets off to meet Latifah Saafir, an engineer who now makes some of the most amazing quilts you'll see, incorporating bits of her culture and life into the quilts she makes. David then stops in on another young quilter, Luke Haines, who has some of his quilts hanging on gallery walls. Luke insists on making a quilt featuring the one and only Monica Padman. David Westlake - The Servants - in conversation with David Eastaugh New album - My Beautiful England - out autumn 2022 David Westlake formed indie band the Servants in 1985 in Hayes, Middlesex, England. The Servants appeared on 1986's NME-associated C86 compilation, and the band was from 1986 to 1991 the original home of Luke Haines. Haines describes David Westlake's first solo album, 1987's Westlake, as "a minor classic". Westlake's second solo album, 2002's Play Dusty for Me, was released in a limited issue that quickly sold out but was never re-pressed.[5]Captured Tracks reissued Play Dusty for Me in LP format on Black Friday, 2015.
"Cathal Coughlan Remembered: Somewhere Between Joe Gould And Lee Mavers" “The supreme question about a work of art,” James Joyce once wrote, "is out of how deep a life does it spring.” If you tried to plumb the fathoms for a measurable reading of the life of Cathal Coughlan—well, the depth finder would crack right in half. Coughaln's life has been a rich and textured affair and his talent is vast and incomprehensibly majestic. With his band Microdisney, The Cork -born musician put out several of the most affecting albums ever made. Efforts like The Clock Comes Down the Stairs in 1985 or the following year's Crooked Mile, are front to back classics. After he and his bandmate Sean O-Hagan dissolved Microdisney and O-Hagan went on to form the High Llamas, Coughlan fired up the Fatima Mansions—an aggressive, fiery and angular outfit, that played synth-laced alternative rock that churned away with grinding and brutal beauty. Viva Dead Ponies and Lost In The Former West are two personal favorites, but the fact is, I love every album in their discography. Over the course of his career Coughlan put out a series of brilliant solo albums, collaborated with the likes of comic Sean Hughes and British singer/songwriter Luke Haines, scored movies like The Last Bus Home and The Mapmaker, toured with U2, appeared onstage in a contemporary opera, and reformed Microdisney for a brief series of triumphant shows. His new album Song of Co-Aklan is a work of startling beauty and precision. Imbued with poetic invention and finesse, haunting melodies, riveting ballads and an unmistakable wisdom and pop grace, Coughlan has never sounded better. This is a deep and focused conversation that can't be encapsulated in a sentence or two—you just have to listen. But we do touch on Lee Mavers, friendship, Sting, the legend of Joe Gould, the vulnerability of solo shows and staying prolific during lockdown. He’s written and recorded as ParlourFlames, the band he formed in 2013 with ex OASIS rhythm guitarist Bonehead.

VIPop # 26 Whether he shared the creative process with Sean O'Hagan in the cult band Microdisney, or then as a solo artist, under his own name or that of Fatima Mansions, few artists have managed to install such a powerful and personal musical universe while exploring such different musical styles ... Being alternately "pop" and a few moments later almost "borderline", he always made us understand better what can be the complexity and the talent of a real artist ... And this ability to be able to cover a vast spectrum of the emotional field allows him to excel in collaborations, such as the project The North Sea Scrolls (with Luke Haines and Andrew Mueller) or the Operas of François Ribac and Eva Schwabe ... Carter USM go head to head with The Auters in this episode of Book Off! Joe Haddow is joined by Jim Bob and Luke Haines who go head to head in a war of the words - putting Kinski's autobiography up against Dave Eggers. But who will win? Why they love and hate writing in equal measure, the longevity of projects, the craziness of the 90s and how their music has changed with age. FOR THE RIGHT TO BE GOVERNED, WASTE THEM WITHOUT MERCY As our (pretend) close personal confidant Luke Haines will tell you, “it’s not for God’s love/ it’s not for cocaine,” which are the only two extremes on the religion-80s drugs scale. Of course it’s not, you dirty heathens! It’s for COMICS. All-inclusive SILENCE!, the comics podcast that makes you listen to ladies etc sometimes. Gary Lactus is joined by emergency guest Maid of Nails all the way from the Razor House in darkest Caledonia, who like any other Strong Female Character can talk massive amounts of shit just like Them Goize. Comedy, maternal pop culture reviews, we’ve got it all. Find out whose mother really wants to hear more about the Ents, and exactly how to catch Gary Lactus’ comedy show in London. The Reviewniverse spawns chat of Judge Dredd, 2000AD, Wolverine Goes To Japan On His Gap Year, Nighthawk, Bitch Planet, Civil War II, The Ultimates, Wicked And Divine, Wonder Woman, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Auaman, Punisher, All Star Section 8 and some talk of the Preacher TV show thing. SOUNDTRACKS! Yes, it's episode 2 of Vitriola and Robin and Michael just can't shut up about soundtracks. Well, that's not strictly true. They can't shut up, yes, but they barely discuss soundtracks at all. Listeners get mentioned, as does Kate Tempest, Fingersnap and Luke Haines but there's maybe 10 seconds of actual soundtrack goodness. That's because the two a-holes (arseholes) talked so much that the podcast had to be edited in two. This is part one. Part two is next week. Thanks so much for your input. It's greatly appreciated. Please write to us at vitriolamusic@gmail.com and recommend some music (and let us know how shit the sound is in the podcast. DON'T! We already know). Love, Michael and Robin xxx
