DEI Backlash: Companies Are Responding to Diversity Challenges

Corporate DEI measures saw a surge during and after the nationwide unrest over George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police, but they've since become a major political, legal, and cultural flashpoint. Companies that adopted diversity initiatives in 2020 and afterward are now trying to figure out how to retool as they confront a backlash that seems to be partly about weariness with bureaucratic initiatives, but also partly a reflection of demographic anxieties. On this episode of our podcast, On The Merits, analyst Kate Azevedo and reporter David Hood discuss the challenges that DEI initiatives are facing, the way business and other organizations are responding, and what the future may hold under an incoming administration that's openly hostile to diversity policies. Why the Fed Must Move Fast to Tame Inflation

When facing an economic crisis, the Fed's playbook normally skews toward juicing the economy too much rather than too little. After all, in the last go-round in 2007, being too stingy might have helped trigger a depression. Fifteen years later though, America's central bankers face the opposite problem: they need to move fast to cool inflation. That's one of the takeaways from a panel discussion among economists this week, moderated by Stephanie. With U.S. inflation at 7%, the Fed needs to do more than expected, said Bill Dudley, a former president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank and senior adviser to Bloomberg Economics. Dramatically raising interest rates by a half-point in March is worth a look, Dudley said, though unlikely to happen.  Meantime, Bloomberg chief U.S. economist Anna Wong explains why U.S. workers, who've gone missing lately, are likely to rejoin the labor force soon. And, chief global economist Tom Orlik shares why President Xi Jinping isn't about to let China's economy implode while he seeks to cement lifetime power. Finally, on a lighter note, reporter David Hood shares everyone's frustrations with the IRS, where customer service is so bad that some tax professionals are hiring robots to wait in line for them. Corporate tax departments and accounting firms haven't had much success in diversifying their workforce in recent years, a recent Bloomberg Tax survey shows. The survey data show that while corporate tax departments have seen an increase in the number of female managers over the past four years, overall the tax industry's race and gender demographics still aren't representative of the general population when it comes to high-level jobs. On today's episode of our weekly podcast, Talking Tax, we speak with Katrina Welch, North America director of tax at Gordon Food Service, and Melinda Phelan, a partner at Baker & McKenzie LLP. Time is running out to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, and activists and scientists say global efforts like those seen at the recent COP26 meeting aren't moving nearly fast enough. Can a carbon tax or some other type of carbon pricing scheme use the power of market forces to speed up this process? And if so, are these options even politically or logistically viable? Those are the questions we ponder on today's episode of our podcast, Parts Per Billion. Sanjay Patnaik, director of the Brookings Institution's Center on Regulations and Markets, speaks to Bloomberg Tax reporter David Hood about how a carbon tax might work in the U.S. And Frank Eich, an economist with U.K. consultancy CRU, speaks to reporter Michael Rapoport about whether carbon pricing could function across international borders. A landmark meeting on curbing climate change didn't do much to address the role that tax measures might play, but financial-climate consultants and academics still think they can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The COP26 conference agreed on long-awaited rules for global emissions trading markets, one key form of carbon pricing meant to help provide financial incentives for reducing emissions. But carbon taxes—direct levies that increase the price of carbon fuels or the emissions that result from them—weren't dealt with in that agreement. And with the U.S. Congress also not taking action on carbon taxes, some advocates are concerned an opportunity to slow climate change with aggressive policies are falling out of reach. There are still ways taxes could make a difference in the climate arena, however. On this week's episode of Talking Tax, Frank Eich, an economist with U.K. consultancy CRU, spoke to Bloomberg Tax's Michael Rapoport about the COP26 developments and the future of carbon taxes. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mike Younger left home at the age of 17 and cut his teeth as a fledgling street performer in Toronto and Vancouver. At the age of 20, he headed to New York City to seek out the 60's folk renaissance remnants. It was while performing live on WWOZ in New Orleans, that this renegade troubadour and poet of roots music caught his first break when a music publisher heard him on the broadcast. Soon after, Mike traveled to Nashville to record demos, and his recordings reached the ear of Rodney Crowell. When Mike signed his first record deal, Crowell stepped in as producer, and together they turned out Somethin' In The Air in 1999. In 2001, Jim Dickinson started producing Mike's second album, which never saw the light of day. The Senate-passed infrastructure bill aims to revive nineties-era taxes on chemical companies and importers to pay for cleaning up some of the nation's most contaminated sites. While the bill still needs to clear the House, the chemicals industry claims the Superfund tax provisions are unfair because they impact a small subset of the industrial sectors that contributed to pollution. But advocates say the return of the “polluters pay” doctrine is a step in the right direction to clean up toxic sites. On this week's episode of Parts Per Billion, corporate tax reporter David Hood talks to Steve Jawetz, a principal at the environmental law firm Beveridge and Diamond PC, who argues the tax is unfairly targeted. David also talks to Danielle Melgar, an advocate with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group's “Zero Out Toxics” program, about how this tax is a victory for environmental groups. Investors interested in how companies meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards are also becoming increasingly interested in where—and whether—a company is paying tax. Witold Henisz, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and founder of the ESG Analytics Lab, argues that tax payments are a critical indicator of a company's broader social impact, and should be factored in to ESG conversations. On this week's episode of our podcast, Talking Tax, Henisz talks to reporter David Hood about how investors are turning to local disclosures to assemble "bespoke data" showing a company's tax burden and payments and why companies will likely face mounting pressure to disclose that type of information. When David Hood was younger, he stumbled across the 1931 version of “Frankenstein” on television, which led to a lifelong interest in horror films. In 2013, he started Hooptober, a horror movie viewing project that asks participants to watch 31 films in 31 days. The project is named for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper, because as Hood likes to joke, “You can't spell October without t-o-b-e.” While they change each year, this year's rules include watching “three disease-based films, a film with a movie theater in it, and two films with a Black director or a predominantly Black cast or lead,” Hooptober is about seeing the genre as something that is beyond just blood and gore. The project is meant to incite conversation and recommendations between participants and to use the guidelines as an opportunity to view some films you might not have otherwise heard of or seen. Hood believes that by expanding the idea of what is considered “horror,” that there really is a horror film for everyone. “You're not going to like every style of beer; you're not going to like every type of film. But just because you don't like a stout doesn't mean that there's not a stout out there that you would like, and just because you think you don't like horror films doesn't mean that there's not something out there that would speak to you.” The Hooptober online community continues to grow, with almost 1,000 participants from 19 different countries this year. Hood gives some movie recommendations for #spookyszn and highlights some of Pittsburgh's notable horror film history -- from George A. Romero and Tom Savini to the lesser-known “Blood Sucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh” (shot in Lawrenceville in the ‘80s). Links in this episode:    Hooptober 2020 on Letterboxd   The George A. Certain things trigger our memories. Even the title of this message has most likely triggered us to remember ANZAC Day. This sermon is not about that, but about remembering what God has told us. David Hood takes us on a journey showing things Christ said to his disciples which they forgot, but strangely the Pharisees remembered but did not believe. After all of this we are asked to consider, what has Christ said to us, that we have forgotten and not put into practice?

The present age that Demas loved is different to the present age that we are living in, and what tempted Demas away from God's will may not be the same thing that tempts people today. The question is then, what is the thing that tempts you away from the love of God? That thing is the the "world" to you. In this message David Hood continues delving into what it means to not love this world, by showing that the world may not be the same for each person, and encourages you to consider what is the world to you and surrender that love to God.
